Carmac one of the key figures who helped turn gaming into esports. Before the stages and the cameras, he was part of the Unreal Tournament community a place where passion, rivalry, and raw competition shaped the future. His journey from fragging to founding is one of the most authentic stories in esports history.

Imagine this - the ability to play your favourite arena shooter game... IN BROWSER, no download needed!
It's not an invite only closed beta from 2008, but apparently a Docker container.

I put together a prototype for an online multiplayer FPS game which revolves around real world factions and divisions.
Obviously everything would look a lot better with dedicated talent, but the main idea behind it was to have a game where players align to their real world alliances and do battle against their real world enemies.
I don't know if anything will come of it, its just something I wanted to put out there as I worked on it in my spare time.
My main question is, and trolling aside, do you like the idea of playing a game where your team mates are people you are aligned with in the real world on big world issues and your opposition are people who you dislike?
And of course it would have FFA type things too, but it makes more sense as a team game.
It really daunting looking at the visual quality of games like BF6, but its 400 million dollar game with about 6,000 staff.
I'm personally bored of so many games these days, so I wanted to bypass legacy rulesets for how games are made.
Arbitrary teams and factions etc, that don't really mean much, and bring in low level emotions and then build a game around that.
so after slagging off Q3, and not participating in it at all (apart from one or a few tdm games where he was very sub par) he's getting the majority vote?
he's skilled, and will do well no doubt but it's about the best so killmas and question should be up there with toxic trailing third or maybe Vo0 as he's actual active and competing.
there are some weird names here, who would never attend anyway even if they had a spot
so ok, add more then, I want yoda, chuck norris, bruce lee, the Lebowski dude, the Knights Who-Say-Ni, hilary clinton, the actual champion of wow tournaments (the one from guitar hero would do too), a rabbit cyborg, a rock (not The Rock, just a rock ; a wild one though, not an industrial pet-rock), the most powerfull man in carmac's eyes, and this guy there, yeah the one on the left next to the old lady
lol Really nice choices, I'd go for Chuck Norris, because if you don't choose Chuck Norris he'll go after you. Well, seriously, I know some of the names wouldn't show up but 90% of them are ppl who has applied for the slot. Anyway I said power to the people, and I'm gonna keep that. If Toxic is chosen I'll speak to him and invite him to come, if he doesn't wanna come I'm sure Killmas (who applied for the slot and is second in the poll right now) we'll be very pleased to come :)
I added him because someone in the last article proposed him for the slot :) Let me explain, this is how it works: most of the names are players who have already applied for the slot ( if you check the list they're the ones from Quetz to Lost-Cauze) but as I said, I'd also consider adding names to the poll proposed by the users, that's why I added Toxic.
I'm trying to talk to Tox to se if he'd be willing to come in case he got elected. You all may be right and I'm wrong letting people propose players...
I'm trying to do the best tournament I can and I wanted to give you all the chance to contribute, to be involved on it. Because the reason I'm working so hard on this is not to please the professional players, I'm doing it for the Quake comunity, because you deserve it. We deserve it. Do you all understand it now?
actually one slot based on public voting is a great idea, I dunno why some people on esr dont like that since no community has had such power on the game/tournament ever, still they bitch about it, its just typical esr stupidity I guess, anyway you are actually doing an excellent job, a quake 3 tourney in year 2008 with big prize pot and almost all present day stars, run by an admin who actually appreciates the game and the community, I simply cant ask more than that.
I don't think people are criticizing being able to contribute, having a vote is fantastic, but rather about including an 'unserious' player whom we even don't know if he is coming or not when theres people who probably are even better atm and are wanting to go.
That would be wonderful cos I love Lakerman but I've been told he's a professional poker player now so, I don't think he's really into Quake. On the other hand, toxjic told me he'd play Q3 again this week to see how he's doing so I think it's a different situation. Tox hasn't been as unactive as Lakerman. Although I'd really love to see Laker playing at his level in my tournament but , it breaks my heart, it's impossible :)
i didn't realise toxic hadn't even asked for a spot. i already voted for him, but i'd change my vote to question, k1llmas or vo0 .. not sure who's really better though. just going with k1llmas because of the result against killsen. :)
who's the better player between question, k1llmas and vo0? would somebody who knows what theyre talking about care to share their view on this? :P
I knew you would post this demo. Honestly its dm6, the one map toxic can compete against top tier on. Also, fox only practiced q1 and q2 for this tournament, where as toxic focused on q3 and q4.
The man was railing 70+ in OSP and shafting 40+ in OSP. Imagine him in cpma with xerp on. Everyone is getting raped. And i mean he was SPAMMING his shit. Not even making sure to %100 hit shots like stunt/erok do in ctf.
This is the only guy that makes cooller complain about aim. And ITS COOLLER THE MASTER OF BRAIN>AIM.
I was trying to say that his accuracies weren't as high as anonymous claimed, surely he was at the top of aimers but not quite as high as 40lg 70rg. zamuz did several games with 100 rg I've heard, still his average was probably more like 45-60. fazz and zamuz were hitting ~38 and 41 lg in an online t2 match, but still they'd usually hit a little less (more like mid 30ish). peaking once doesnt make that your average aim, and players like czm, fox or zamuz surely showed some great aiming skills as well.
Toxic out aimed fox HEAVILY. CZM got smoked on hub versus toxic in a lan friendly match, he was shaking his head constantly at all the bullshit toxic was hitting on him (i was right behind him watching shaking my own damn head too)
Z4MUZ has great aim and movement. Toxic is Z4MUZ x 1.5 + 5. Or some bullshit equation to make him seem ridiculous. Because he was and IS ridiculous.
I was just mentioning fazz because he was hitting similar percentages in some games, too. Doesn't mean he's the hottest aimer ever, and your stats are simply bullshit.
h4w h4w! uh, I also like this one time heard from this one guy that all stories about czm losing on hub are made up and that you/walter/whoever are mistaken ;)
pretty useless if you can select everyone.
