The magna science center is set in an old converted steel works just outside sheffield. You can see here, just how much they actually left of the original building.

CPL UK Day 3 (1 comment)
Posted by ReDeYe @ 06:28 CDT, 5 September 2005 - iMsg
Actually I sit here back home and write the journal entry for day 3 of the CPL World Tour stop in Sheffield, England. Why? many reasons, probably safer to say nothing on some of them, but others are explained below. Suffice to say overall, I was pretty dissapointed with the event, although some of the matches were excellent.

Sunday started off like the previous two days, on the floor of a 4kings hotel room. I am obviously getting old, the aches in my back from the floor seem to get worse with every "floor sleeping" event. Shouldnt complain though, it was nice of the guys to help me out and save me a few pounds.

We got to the event at about 10am and Zaccubus left us straight away to warm up for his match with Ztrider which would decide his fate in this stop. When we had got our coffee (to wake up) and a traditional bacon roll, we joined the spectator area behind Zacc and watched him play an excellent game to defeat ztrider. Finally he'd broken the top 8 spot he'd gained in previous events. The night before, both players had been super confident of beating one another, but the UK gods shone down on the home favourite this time.

Once through to unchartered territory, Zacc seemed to thrive on the attention and played even better to beat Booms. His last game of the day came against zyz and it would decide who "won" the losers bracket and therefore a place in the top 3 would be assured. Zacc won the first map reptty comfortably, only to lose by a couple in map 2. Map 3 was mail bighting for the spectators, with every frag cheared and every death met with a groan. 2 minutes remained and Zacc held a slender 8-5 lead in a very low scoring tactical game. zyz pulled off some great shots and spawn kills to grab the lead with a minute remaining at 12-10. Zaccubus went on the hunt, but could not get his prey until 6 seconds remained to make it a 1 frag game. zyz sat out the 5 second spawn in though and spawned away from the only spawn Zacc could spam rockets at.

1 frag left Zaccubus in 4th place and denied him his chance at revenge over fatal1ty. He was understandably pleased at his 4th place finish and the 4kings guys were very happy with him.

The CS tourney came to an end with Team 9 proving far too good for everyone at the event. Catch gamer feeling the full force of the Team 9 steam train with a 15-0 thrashing on de_train as CT's! and that was in the upper bracket final!!

4kings seemed happy enough with 5th place overall and especially happy after their win over old enemy sk.

I had a pretty strange day on the final day of the CPL UK stop with lots of things happening that a day later I cant exactly recall. Sizah from fnatic got into a bit of trouble trying to get to the airport to catch his flight home. Due out of east midlands at 7pm, he was still stranded in Sheffield at 5pm, trying to get a bus or a train to the airport. I drove over to pick him up and take him onto the airport, otherwise he would have missed it totally. The 2 hour round trip did mean however that I missed the game of the weekend between vo0 and fatal1ty.

Coming from the lower bracket, vo0 had to beat fatal1ty twice and therefore win 4 maps to win the CPL UK crown. The fact he did this, speeks volumes about his mental toughness and professional approach to his gaming. It was a truelly remarkable achievement by a player who has little left to prove, in terms of PK.

I arrived back at the event, to see the BYOC being taken down and quickly rescued my laptop and camera, just one of the reasons this very journal was not posted yesterday. Grabbed a quick chat with pbx and lethal about our travel arrangements home and then setup camera for the presentations. (Pics will follow).

Finally, the event played out as it had begun, with frankie goes to hollywood playing and the big bangs from 3 days earleir replayed. We had to head off back to the hotel first to eat before going home and it seemed my ability to count was called into question as SIX of us tried to cram into the car, vo0, zacc, lethal and rogue all squashed into the back and pbx happily grabbing the remaining front seat. I almost forgot, vo0's cheque took up much of the space in the back as well!!

We got our food and said our goodbyes, particularly to Ben from 4k and Tempus from x6 and headed back to Wales. I also had a chance to speak to the guys from TsN and thanked them for a good job, under what was obviously difficult circumstances with the DDOS attack. Even though we are on different casting teams, I truelly appreciate just how much we both are left at the mercy of mindless idiots sometimes.

I didnt actually realise how late it was when we departed and it was nearly 4am before we finally arrived back home after dropping lethal and pbx back first. Is it any wonder I wasn't fit enough to post this before now? :)

My current thoughts on the event, without trying to blame anyone in particular, are not great, but i'd rather reflect on things before making any further remarks about it. It was after all a big job to get this organised and GameFrontier obviously tried as hard as possible to make it a success. The fact that it wasn't though for many people means that perhaps the UK gaming scene needs to take a long hard look at itself before attempting a further world class event. There are many, many things I could say about the event that would be mis-construed as some sort of anti-pl message (I am NOT anti CPL in the slightest) or anti-TsN (I am not ant-any gaming broadcaster) or even anti-gamefrontier. The fact is I went to the event with an open mind, despite some worries over things. Those worries were realised early on and it never got any better through the 3 days. Simple things, such as the way people were able to walk in and out with laptops and never be security checked (not that there was any way of proving or disproving it was yours anyway).

Constructive critisism of the event is a must, especially if the UK is to move forward in gaming. Do we even have a chance of a CPL event next year? On this showing, I doubt it very much.

CPL UK Day 2 (12 comments)

Day 2 CPL UK, Sheffield, England. 22:10

Day 2 saw the PK tourney get into full swing, although not before we all woke up far too late (9.20am and should of been at the event at 9am!). By we, I mean the 4kings guys, who were kind enough to let me room with them for the tournament.

Once at the venue, my main focus today was on the UK players, namely pbx, Garpy and Zaccubus. The two CPL virgins didnt progress any further sadly, but both should be proud of what they achieved here, beating several highly rated and respected players who have a wealth of experience in these events. By pbx's standards he had a poor last game and his nerves seemed to get the better of him sadly. Garpy didnt appear to be as nervous but never the less still went out of the tournament. He has also played well and will surely learn from the experience. As for the last of the trio, Zaccubus has been a bit of a star today. He cruised through a couple of the upper bracket games only to throw away a 5 frag lead against Gelleshak and then lose in 3 maps. Despite this obvious downer, he picked himself back up to win 3 loser bracket games, including defeating Forrest & Booms to make the last 6 for the first time. Of the other games, predictably fatal1ty came through to the winners bracket after beating Ztrider and vo0 (much more on form here) joined his american rival in the upper bracket final. Tomorrow will see Zacc take on ztrider, with a lot of of local support. He really believes he can do it too and make the last 4. Despite the improvement in form from Zacc, its still difficult to see a winner other than fatal1ty or vv0, but that wont stop the patriotic support for Zacc.

I also managed to check out a few of the CS matches with both 4K and SK incredibly dumped into the losers bracket fairly early on. Inevitably they met in the losers bracket quarter final with 4K seemingly going to dominate there Swedish rivals, rushing into a massive 15-3 lead, needing just one round to take the match. It didnt come easy though as the swedes fought back by taking 11 straight rounds, before finally 4K got the breaks they needed to send the swedes home 16-14. I have spent a lot of the day today with Ben and the guys from 4kings and despite the bad press these guys often get, they are much the same as the rest of us. Gamers at heart who love to compete and I have personally got on with them really well. Just goes to show, you should never judge people before you know them and always keep an open mind.

The BF2 tourney also took place today, however it was no more than a damp squib with just 3 clans attending. This was a real shame for both the community and the clans that turned up. Never the less, there was still money and pride at stake and Dignitas, lead by odee took the first place. Really though, this is not a reflection on the community, but more on the way this part of the tournament was announced (just a week before the event). Had it been announced sooner, the guys from Dignitas felt sure that many of the other top euro clans would have come.

Away from the event, I spent a nice lunch with the guys from fnatic at the local super market food halls. It was my turn to drive today, so I took Rogue, Sizah, vo0 and Ztrider. We were "entertained" by a local old guy performing some form of quiz show re-enactment in the eating area (complete with leg juggler...). The guy drove us mad with his poor routine and general "over the head" jokes. Perhaps I was just getting old, but when he asked for children to come up and sit with him, I was certain I wouldnt have sent MY children anywhere near him. Strange, does not even come close to describing this guy and I cant even print what vo0 shouted at him either!

The net has died here many times again today, in fact I havent had any net for around 6 hours as I write this, making uploading any pics or reports, impossible. Even the wireless has died now too. I have no idea whats going on and frankly I am bored of asking when things will be fixed. We still, even after 2 days of the event, havent been shown the "press area". The good thing at least is that the games have run smoothly today and they have come thick and fast too.

Hopefully tomorrow things will at least allow us to file our reports and upload some pictures. I was looking forward to this event a lot, mainly as its pretty much the only thing happening in the UK this year for e-sports on a major scale. Sadly though, it has been a real let down. Perhaps I expected too much after Quakecon and i25, but then thinking about it in the cold light of day, these two events have been running for many many years and they have a lot of experience of event management. I also dont understand the full issues here and therefore its unfair of me to attach blame to any one organisation. Game Frontier seem to have done their best with many of the issues and the actual matches have run fine (being run by CPL staff from what I can see). Likewise TsN have done a great job, despite obviously suffering from net issues too.

All in all though, its not a great advert for professional gaming in the UK, if we as a country cant provide a venue capable of delivering a professional tournament.

EDIT : Posted at last, net seems to be back in time for the Zacc v Ztrider game on TSN :)

CPL UK Day 1 (20 comments)
Posted by ReDeYe @ 17:22 CDT, 2 September 2005 - iMsg
It is not often you will find me reporting back to ESR on matters concerning CPL, but the UK stop is a little different. It's on my doorstep (so to speak) and as I hadnt had a chance to attend one this year, the gap between events for iTG allowed me the time to come and check it out.

A 5am start for myself and TheRogue (who joined me last night in Cardiff) meant we were a little weary when we arrived at Aza's (Aaron) house a few hours later. Never the less, the traffic was pretty calm for the trip we made and after a quick stop at Aza's (waking his dad up in the process, whooops), we proceeded the remaining 40 miles to the event.

A little detour round Sheffield (thanks to the crappy directions from theaa.com) meant we arrived just a little before the doors were due to open at 11am. The science museum is set in a huge old Steelworks factory. The reception area had a few people on duty and one of these decided to question me on entry, enquiring "are you here for the CPL thingy?". "Do we look THAT much like geeks?", I replied. He said actually it was because we were 3 adults without any children, which apparantly is pretty rare at this Science Adventure Museum. I believed him, NOT.

Once into the actual venue, we had to wait a long time to sign in as press (and this after a further 30 minute delay). In fact, the PK players and the CS players also had to wait a fair while before being admitted. I have no idea what the problem was, but the only people who got in were the spectators! Once the issue was solved , we grabbed our passes aqnd then had to wait for the opening ceremony before being taken to the press area. Turns out the Press area is located behind the main stage and the main stage was to be the scene for the opening indoor fireworks display to officially open the tournament. This was due to be about mid-day but with the opening of the event being a little later than planned and then issues with the passes, it got put back a bit further.

I managed to catch up with v00 and Zaccubus before the fireworks started and Zacc then relayed a story about why it was running late, claiming that they had "no pens and had gone to the shop to get some...", he really didnt seem to appreciate just how ridculous this sounded and then later admitted that he'd been duped by a fellow 4K'er telling him total lies!...doh.

I grabbed a 10 minute chat with Alex from TSN (here covering the event of course) and he seems to be a genuinely nice guy and he was certainly happy to be skipping school to be here! Whilst I dont want to get into the history between iTG and TSN (suffice to say its never been great), it was at least nice that the pair of us could have a civil conversation about casting and coverage of events we had both done recently, without the awkwardness of working for two different stations getting in the way. Just two guys who love what they do, chatting about it.

The firework opening display was ok (accompanied by Frankie Goes To Hollywoods, Two Tribes remixed and some Intel lazer lights and sporadic displays of counter strike images), nothing amazing, but one loud bang sent Zacc (standing alongside me) skywards with shock. By now, we had been joined in our little huddle by Dave and Mark (aka 215 and 315 from Levitation), here for the day to observe and make rude remarks about people (:p). With very little going on, Mark offered to drive us into Sheffield to grab some food, which we gratefully and out of boredom accepted.

Refuled and ready to go again, we came back to find the PK had started without us, how dare they! PBX had a straight forward win in his single elim qualifier to reach the PK finals proper, but would face v00 in his first match. Garpy meanwhile, a Zaccubus protege, won his match and also proceeded to the tournament proper.

Once the actual double elim started, PBX gained experience, but little else in a 49-10/35-10 beating from v00. v00 assured me before the game, that he had practiced a lot and had not been playing much WOW any more. It showed too with a comfortable win over PBX (Jordan). To be fair though, Jordan took the defeat well and as I write this is busy warming up for his losers bracket game. Zaccubus came through his upper bracket game pretty easily and now we are starting to think about food.

I then had a bit of a ciggarette break where v00 and I proceeded to discuss recent events, quakecon, dallas CPL, ESWC and finally agreed that Toxic had the sickest aim, either of us had seen in any game. Its incredible how much v00 loves his gaming really, seeming really enthused by other events he himself, had not been able to attend. Taking a real interest to the point he even corrected me on a result at ESWC and I attended the event and he didnt! (he was right too, but he still wont play poker with me :().

I'll break off for now as Im totally unsure of the net situation here, it seems to drop out a lot at the moment. Game frontier told us its something to do with the telewest 36mb line they paid for in advance and they have some engineers working on it. They also assured us that the wireless and lan would be fixed correctly tomorrow for net access and that the press area would also be ready for use. (we still havent been given access to the press area, so perhaps it got blown up in the fireworks display!).

ReD

p.s.Photo Gallery starts tomorrow and I may try to upload the "opening ceremony" If i can squash it down in size a bit.

i25 LAN weekend of fun (37 comments)
Posted by ReDeYe @ 19:53 CDT, 29 August 2005 - iMsg
Indeed, it has been a funny old week. Two weeks on from Dallas and Quakecon, I attend a lan purely for fun and no work involved. Yes, thats right, the evervescent insomnia lan in Newbury, UK. i25 this time round and with it a chance to catch up with some good friends and maybe play a few more games than I would normally get to play at a typical event these days. Not that im complaining, its just nice to go to an event to participate for a change.

i25 had a good feel to it, the bank holiday LAN's always do it seems. Plenty of the usual beer, games, beer, more beer and of course curry. For anyone that has never attended these lans, let me set the scene. 1000-1200 players every event, held in a grandstand of a horse racing track over 3 floors. Plenty of indoor and outdoor sleeping areas (for those brave enough with the tents) and a healthy spattering of showers and wash areas. Add in a few food type kiosks and a few exhibitors (we had the frag dolls attend with ubisoft this time) and the very popular guys from kustompc.com with a shop area and you have a great venue. Furthermore, you get helpful staff, excellent security for your pride and joy and all the finals on three large screens in the bar area on finals day. Oh, did I mention they tend to give away some mega prizes via the raffle as well, £1000 PC's, motherboards, leather jackets, keyboards etc. There is also the domino's pizza ordering service which delivers straight to your desk as well.

So there we are, thats how its setup, but really thats not even half the story of this well run and organised event. The real deal comes with the sections and admins that run the tourneys and generally make sure everyone has something to play nearly all the time. For me, that section was the UT section and has been now for over 2 and a half years of attendance. Heres just a snippet of the kind of games I personally played while at the event this weekend. UT CTF 4way Excessive, UT2004 iCTF 2v2, UT2004 BR, CTF, TDM, TAM, minigun instagib (!!!!!!), Quake3, CS:S, Revolt (car racing), Unwheel and BF2. Just because I was sat in the UT section doesnt mean i cant just jump onto one of the sub 10ms servers setup for CS:S for instance. You can play what you want, when you want, but theres something mighty fun about organised play sessions with 20 other guys from the same section that means you get a hell of a lot of fun.

Don't mistake this LAN as something "un-pro" either, sure it doesnt have a major $100,000 tourney or such like, but that doesnt stop the pro players turning up either. There were many attending this time too, including a few of the PK guys (warming up for CPL this coming weekend), Zaccubus, Stermy, Forrest, pbx, Garpy and AphexTwin to name but a few. The final of the 2v2 iCTF for instance was between myself (partnered by the very excellent Lucifax) against Zacc and Garpy. A fun match on a very silly map (sorry Limited but it is!) in a final of a tournament, won by myself and Lucifax for a little over 100 euros in prize money. Big deal you might think, but it was hottly contested and included a lot of very good players. The point though, is that it was fun above all else.

Several other tourneys were arranged too, one including TAM which culminated in a final between an odd ball of players without a clan (called SMB) and divine clan. SMB coming out the winners, proving that you dont even need to attend as a clan to win these things. We had the three screens up in the bar area and commentry from yours truely, although it was somewhat light hearted and fueled by beer :)

The highlight for me was the UT v CS section match though, where each section would pick 10 players to battle in CS:S and then in UT against the other section. Predictably the UT boys got a whiping in CS:S (although a score of 23-7 wasnt that bad for a bunch of noobs). Likewise the CS guys got royally owned in the UT game. CTF and Citadel proving too much for the CS players, going down 38-0 with Xilly from DOA completing more flag runs than I can remember and a score of well over 400... UT 1 CS 0.

What else made this lan and those before it so great? I cant really place my finger on it entirely, you'll just have to get along to one of them to see for yourself.

Although I would say, a lot of what goes on is to do with the people in the UT section too. I picked up pbx before we left for the lan and he was an "insomnia virgin" who seemed to genuinely enjoy himself (even if he didnt drink nearly enough beer!). Nicky also attended for a day (aka Levi\\240) but sadly only as a spectator. She also had a screaming headache all day long, which didnt aid her enjoyment, but even then she still seemed to enjoy being there. I also picked up Rogue on Saturday who attended in a likewise fashion, spectator mode only for him. Of all the people though, the maddest is Meshed from DOA (aka SHEDBOY, aka maker of the funniest UT movie ever (SUP MOVIE for those who wanna grab it from the web)). He brings a sense of fun to the whole UT area, forver getting up to mischief (i.e. tampering with my PC and making it use all the accesability options like magnifier on boot (GIT!)). Plenty of other high jinks goes on here too, removing Limiteds monitor leads, making silly home movies in the car park, lighting cigarettes with a camping gas stove, playing a "LEEEEEEROY JENKINS" as an alarm on the mobile far too early in the morning, waking everyone up... its all good for a laugh :)

Every one of these lan events has a theme too, i21 was famous for the Astz is a cock movie (he claimed his mouse had been stolen and it was in his bag the whole time...) and i25 was no exception. "doing a leroy" became the theme. Whenever we were camped up in in the cs:s match against the CS players, someone would invariably shout out "ok, lets do this, LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEROY...." etc. and then run in and get owned with the first shot. Well, it made us laugh anyway.

Id like to thank the guys at Multiplay for another great weekend of fun and beer and also to the guys in the UT section for sharing so many laughs and games. It is events like this that truelly remind me why I love gaming.

Final Q4 videos (17 comments)
Posted by ReDeYe @ 08:01 CDT, 18 August 2005 - iMsg
So it has ended and with it, my chance to take any more video of Quake 4 in action. I want to start by saying thanks to the guys here at ESR and all those who mirrored the video all over the net. You know its hit the net hard when Angel Munoz tells you in person that he downloaded your vid!

So here they are, as promised a little jet lagged and a little later than planned, the final Quake 4 videos I had left on my hard drive. Citizen is once again the player in the vids. Two videos, one with cit on his own showing off some leet rocket jumps and the other from some action with other players in. This one shows off some nice rocket kills and some gauntlet bludgeoning!

I will write up my thoughts on the whole event in my next journal, but meanwhile my body is still adapting back to BST (Bullshit stupid time aka UK time).

Lets hope we dotn have to wait too long for the real thing now :) 11th Oct seems a good bet right now.

Just a quick update via the journal, Ive uploaded a further 3 videos from Quakecon.

1 is from the other day showing the weapons firing and some speed runs strafe jumps etc and towards the end, some neat nail gun jumping off walls.

The other two are some late footage I got today of Q4 CTF In action. They arent great quality wise, but at least its something to see.

You can grab the files below. Meanwhile ive also added some pics to the gallery and will finish that off tomorrow if i get a chance before my flight home.

Have fun, red.

No one came close on day one, but there were a few frags recorded against him. Three from a young girl...ok so he let her get them, but i think from memory that was still more than anyone got in the whole week. He's got a head start I guess, but do shootouts really help improve his skill in a game? He seems to think so.

Sunday 14th August 2005

Quakecon is almost over...

Im sitting back in my hotel room writing this journal right now and trying to remember exactly what happened over these past two days of non journal activity (save for more Q4 vids). Its pretty hard as weve done so much today especially. But here goes at my best stab.

Saturday was to be finals day in the nVidia Tournaments and therefore a busy day for the iTG crew. We also had a few other things to deal with too, but luckily and thanks to Intel our connection problems were not an issue. Its worth thanking the guys from Intel here, as they gave us their bandwidth as soon as they heard about the connection issues. It turned out to be a rogue router at the event, which blighted not only us but a few other areas as well. You just cant plan for those kind of things and I dont really blame the organisers as they did everything they could possibly do. Intel though, were awesome and we really enjoyed working with them, even meeting up in the hotel room for a drink after we closed up. (more about that later).

In the tournaments there were few surprises with missy taking Q3 from ms.X, Check6 winning a lengthy ET final, Purri doiminating the Q2 and the appearance of rocketboy in the final of the Doom3 competition. It was only really in this last game that we got a surprise with the winners bracket Rocketboy facing a losers bracket fnatic\gopher. Gopher had to win two maps in a row, rocketboy just once. As it turned out though, Gopher was brilliant on map 1 and then with a narrow lead played brilliantly and clever in map 2 to take it.

Of the casts, I managed a few which was great. Covering some quake 3 and doom 3 with Lun was awesome, the guy simply rocks. The fact we share a passion for fast bikes also helps I guess but hes great behind the mic too. I also got to cover the D3 final with Wheat and as ever he was on fire, its sometimes hard to stop him when hes in such fine form. TosspoT was literally worshipped by the throng of ET players here and im sure he enjoyed what for him is the pinacle event on the calendar for ET. All in all then it was a great day for casting and the matches were always entertaining, at least from our point of view.

We did manage to get fatal1ty to come over and do an interview, which I'd arranged with him and his advisor the day before. I was due to interview him and had a host of questions from you guys on IRC, but sadly for me, Wheat jumped in and did it. It was no problem obviously, iTG got the scoop and the low down on Q4 from Jon anyway and thats what mattered to me. The interview was interesting in a few ways and it was obvious that Jon has really enjoyed playing it this week in the shootouts, which by the way, Lun, Trillian and wheat have all casted live in the Creative area for him.

Talking of creative and without wanting this to be a "we love u sponsors" kinda journal post, its important i say a few thanks and one of those is to Creative who supplied us free of charge with an awesome speaker set for our place in the Intel Lounge. It certainly went a long way to helping the local spectators enjoy our casts. What did make me smile was that occasionaly the guys from Creative had to come over and turn it down a bit! perhaps they regretted giving us such great speakers lol. We also got to keep these speakers, so thanks Creative.

Of the rest of the day, we spent answering a huge number of people on IRC and hopefully we helped a lot of you, its not possible to please all the people all of the time, but I hope we helped overall and provided the kind of commentry that the games rightly needed.

I also had a chance to speak with Angel Munoz and Id like to say thanks to him for a couple of things. Firstly he told me he had seen the videos I posted on Q4 and because of these he came to the event to see it himself as he was impressed by it. I asked him a very direct question too which was "So, do you want Q4 for CPL?". His reply was pretty much "Its a done deal for me, I really want it, its just whether we can do something with iD". I understand that Intel may be involved in trying to broker a deal, but id guess its early days just now. Lets hope for the sake of dualing in FPS that Q4 unites some of the finest players in various games right now. Its awesome for me to think about getting the chance to cast games like Fatal1ty v Cooller or Lauke v czm or Rocketboy v v00 and many other combos of course. Its all possible right now, who knows who will like Q4 though, time will tell. For me and many others at Quakecon that played it, it was awesome. And I dont mean that in an excited "omg I got to play it first" kinda way. After several days of watching and playing, I really do believe it has the ability to unite players of different games and be popular at many different levels. Heres hoping the corporate situations can be sorted in order not to harm those chances it has.

When we finished the doom3 final, quakecon's tournaments ended and with it our casting for the week. We messed around after for a while and recorded some fun stuff and then packed up our gear and got back to the hotel. We then set off for a mass invasion of a local diner at about 10.30pm. I went with Lun, as he had kindly gotten me a helmet and jacket to use on the back of his GSX750R. It was an awesome ride and I wont even share with you what kind of speeds we did getting to our diner, but suffice to say it was ace fun for me. We ate, chewed the fat a little and then headed back to the hotel, once again on the back of Lun's bike and another awesome ride.

We were then joined by the guys from Intel, which was great fun and then they invited us all down to the lounge area to play some Q4 ctf and have some fun. CTF was everything I had hoped for and once again I can see it being hugely popular, not just to quake players but to other ctf game players too. Its simple, its fast and its fun, perfect ingrediants for a CTF game. We had loads of fun with it and I really cant wait for it to be released.

Finally then, Im back in my room and its 4.20am and im still buzzing from the day. I will post this now and leave some more Q4 videos uploading overnight (Dallas time) and then post to ESR again tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone who has listened, watched and read the content iTG has provided over the last 5 days or so, I really hope you guys have been given plenty to talk about and discuss, it sure seems like ESR has not been this busy for a while now.

gg, red out.

QuakeCon Day 1 is over (13 comments)
Posted by ReDeYe @ 00:14 CDT, 12 August 2005 - iMsg
Phew what a day.

It all started with a phone call about us releasing the Q4 video we shot yesterday, too early. I was sure we hadnt, but somehow it leeked from our uploaded area or became public, im still not 100% sure how, but it was ok in the end with the people that mattered. I don't blame anyone specifically, I know loads really wanted to see Q4 in action or in fact, just anything Q4 related at all, so it was bound to happen and I should have made better precautions. Luckily its fine now.

As for the day, we have had lots of challenges as ever on the first day of a mahor event it can never be 100% with so many things to ensure are right. Never the less, we casted the first game of the day on time with video, so objective one was achieved, mainly due to the incredible work of a group of guys who worked to get it all done, Trav, Blankz, sigma and wheat in particular. As ever though, everyone seemed to make a valuable contribution in one way or another.

We also covered some of the free for alls, mainly letting it go out un-casted, so people could at least watch the games.

We have some new tricks on the video stream now, which should be obvious to anyone viewing that viewed in Paris for the ESWC, it just looks so much better, but a word of warning, you need to be downloading at 70k to get a crisp clear picture. And dont forget the green pixelated stuff is normal and you should leave it 60 seconds at the start to get going.

In the Q2, we saw Purri for the first time and the guy seems like he is on fire with that rail. Well over 80 kills in his free for all game in 15 minutes... awesome.

I helped out on the cast for ET with Toss, but Id be hopeless at casting it, so I simply played the role of camera man, for our local crowd in the Intel Lounge. Seemed like a good game.

As for the Quake 4 video, it seems to have impressed most who have seen it, but of course there is more to see and I will be working with the guys from Gamecloud to bring you a further, much larger video of someone playing the game that knows how to play Q3 and this will hopefully show you guys just how much like Q3 the new game is, both in terms of speed and air control etc. We didnt get a chance to record this fully today, so we are going to shoot it again in the morning, first thing and get it upped asap. For you guys in Europe that would be about 4-5pm CET Friday.

Right now, im back in my room, its late (11pm) and we havent eaten, so will call out for a pizza and grab a beer. We should be on air from 9am Dallas local time tomorrow. Plenty of pics taken, but i still cant get galleries here working, so maybe Sujoy will be able to fix soon, If not I will try and upload somewhere on Saturday and link to them here.

nn :)

More Quake 4 goodness (48 comments)
Posted by ReDeYe @ 00:36 CDT, 11 August 2005 - iMsg
Just a small update. Its currently 23:30 here in Dallas/Grapevine and I have just returned to my room for a breather. We have worked as a team really hard through a lot of setup issues. Nothing major, just stuff that absolutely HAD to be done tonite.

In fact, the whole crew has been awesome. Trillian and her husband went and got food for all of us, wheat and I worked on getting the production images to the plasma screens in the Intel booth, Sigma managed to sort out not only our lan connections, but also the irritating signal display on one of our static cameras. Blankz continued to work on the production setup, kicking a few butts to get the lan sorted too and the rest of the guys Tosspot, Trav and Ed have all been busy doing stuff for everyone as well. Its been amazing to see the teamwork going into this thing.

As for tomorrow, we will be focused on ET mainly, which means Trillian and Toss casting via video most of the day. Though Trillian has agreed to cast in the Creative booth for fatal1ty during the week to. Too bad she only gets paid in creative hardware, how is she going to split an mp3 player with the rest of us? (only joking Trill :p)

Me? I am going to be casting some Q3 with wheat and probably some Doom3 too. Ed and Lun (not arrived yet) should be doing Q2. In a bit of inside news for those of you reading on ESR, we are trying to sort out a deal with the great guys from Activision whilst here, to broadcast some Quake 4 stuff out to you via video. So in essence you get to see live what its like. Still early days on this one, so its not 100% we will do it just yet, but we are going to try and get this for you.

On the subject of Quake 4 I have now had a chance to play it, all be it on a laptop with a highly sensitive mouse (we couldnt seem to get the mouse sens to alter). Early opinions are hard, but the graphics are great (as we expected), not too grey (ala D3) and all the weapons feel like Q3. The Q3 sounds were still being used (no bad thing), but the most noticable difference was that it feels slower in terms of movement. Not dramatically, but noticable. Its something new to get used to, but it does feel a little slower in the general movement. Strafing, jumping etc was all pretty normal as were the rocket jumps and boosts off other parts of the map.

The map we played (the only one in this version I think) was pretty good and nicely, wasnt that far removed from Q3. I am busy uploading the video as I type this, so won't be long now and you guys will be able to see some of this for yourself. I will be doing further movies as the week goes on, and as already revealed we are working on bringing you something special via our casts this week.

Off to see if we have anything else to finish off now, before I hit the pillows and crash. 'til tomorrow.

P.S. I uploaded the missing picture from the earlier journal entry for you. It shows the new Q4 logo with those small little bumps on the underside of the Q. Four of them ;)

P.P.S. Forgot to say. Fatal1ty came over to say hi to us when he arrived and invited us to his room. He explained that he has a huge suite and a big table, so if we wanted to come down and play some poker with him "thatd be great". He gave us his room number, which was pretty brave of him considering there are about 7,000 gamers staying here right now and I wonder how many would venture up to his room should they find out his room number was 6315...oops.

Note : That is not fats real room number of course ;)

Quake 4 is sighted (19 comments)
Posted by ReDeYe @ 18:47 CDT, 10 August 2005 - iMsg
9:16am Dallas Time 10/08/2005. (15:16 UK time)

Without Wheat and Blankz (they are still showering, probably together lathering up!) we have made our way to the event and arrive with no Intel booth built yet, but I have my first glimpse of the highly anticipated Q4. Or rather a glimpse of the Q4 hosted area and the logos around it. Uploaded below, as I felt I owed you guys at least one pic ;)

17:30 Dallas Time 10/08/2005.

Quake 4 looks incredible. There, you have it first hand and in the morning (Dallas time) you will be able to see it for yourself in action. The first video is shot, I just can't upload it yet for you guys because of agreements in place here. First thing in the morning though, it will already have been uploaded and I will post the link to it here. It looks great, but I cant really tell you how it feels just yet as we were kept at arms length whilst some guy played it (he had no idea how to strafe or jump though) so its hard to tell how fast it is at the moment. Tomorrow we may be able to bring you a few more bits on the game.

I'm back in my room here at the Gaylord and despite being moved twice before, we now have an ajourning room to the other iTG guys. I am sure wild parties will commence when wheat arrives back!.

I spent an hour or so in the sports bar this afternoon with niceguyED which was really relaxing and then we went to Steak and Shake and had a double steak burger and the greatest milk shake ive ever had in my life (strawberry cheescake with ice cream, flavour).

Why havent we done any work yet? simple, we have no connection as of yet with a few issues to work out on the logistics. I have popped back to update my journal, upload it and try and get the Qcon gallery up before I head back down to help setup our area within the Intel area.

A second day is almost over but tomorrow the real fun starts with our first video and audio casts. We will, as I understand it, be concentrating on ET tomorrow as the other games sort them selves out with a bunch of free-for-alls. So until tomorrow.

London to Dallas... (5 comments)

Day one - Flight time

11:21am Local Time 09/08/2005. (5:21am Dallas Time)

Currently I am headed for Dallas, or more precisely Grapevine, Texas for a once a year extravaganza of iD software orientated goodness. The flight map in the headrest in front of me reliably informs me that we are just flying over the southern tip of Ireland and that our current altitude is 40,000ft with 4508 miles of the journey remaining. Can you tell im bored already on this long flight? its -54 degrees centigrade outside right now and thats perhaps because this 777 is travelling at nearly 600mph. All pretty impressive stuff of course, but it still means I have over 8 hours left of my journey. Im about to install Q2 on this laptop to while away a few hours... In the time it took me to type that we've actually covered a further 50 miles, either im a god damned slow typer, or this thing moves fast.

18:38 Local Dallas Time 09/08/2005. (00.38 UK time)

Finally arrived at the Gaylord hotel and resort and I am now settled nicely into a very comfortable room. The flight was just fine, despite being over 10 hours, but the customs area was a nightmare. First of all it took an age to get off the plane and get to immigration. Once there, it was a further lengthy cue, before being hustled off by Immigration agents into a small side room to be interviewed. The reason? They felt I should have had a different type of visa, but after a further 20 minutes of arguments (between themselves) I Was finnaly given my green card and my passort returned.

The luggage was late coming off the plane as well, so in all I was nearly 2 hours later than planned arriving at my exit gate. Luckily, I didnt have to wait long for Blankz from iTG to show up looking for me. A short ride with him and Toss to the hotel (despite blankz having a sense of direction akin to my wife, i.e. terrible), we are finally in here. Ive phoned home (much to my wife's annoyance as its like after midnight there) and sampled the Texan beer and seen a little of the immensly impressive Gaylord Resort (ive sampled about 2%).

I was supposed to meet up with blankz and have some food, but we have lost each other in the resort, so time for me to just chill and update thise journal and grab some Simpsons on WB channel. Its about 90 degrees here right now and there are some rather nasty thunderstorms due tonite, but apart from that and the stressful airport stuff, its actually great to be here, if just a little surreal right now.

I've spotted a few "quakeconners" but no one of any real note, but the resort is starting to fill with people attending this years Quakecon. Somewhere in this huge structure is a person with a disk labelled "Q4 MP demo" I just havent found him in the 10,000 rooms yet... Only two more days to wait anyway. I am going to chill for a bit then head off for some food and finally try to find some net access and upload some early pictures.

23:00 Dallas Time (london 4:50am)

Phew, a hectic couple of hours, with food and coffee and a visit to the halls where quakecon is starting to take shape already. An incredible scale already, this promises to be huge. I managed to meet up with a few more guys and we are currently sitting in a hotel room eating pizaa with myself, Trillian, miles, blankz, niceguyed and tosspot. We are also joined by one of Wheat's old mates from 5-19.

Much merriment to be had, so for now, its sign off time from day one of the quakecon trip, ETA : -1 day.

Finally after a week of hassle and stress over my plane tickets for Dallas, everything is now confirmed. In fact, all the problems actually worked out in my favour in the end, as I've been given a direct flight now, rather than a 3 hour mid stop in Toronto (they need to extend their runways anyway).

I've never had many issues with buying things online, in fact im probably one of the only people in my family that regularly relies on ordering via the net. So for a plane ticket, it made even more sense to find the right flights and prices, or so I thought. I wont mention the stupid people I dealt with first time, but suffice to say, not telling your customer that their card is not accepted, AFTER they take the number on the website, is not the done thing! 7 days later, I call to say ive had nothing from them only to be told, the tickets are sold to someone else as my card is not accepted by the travel company, GAH!

Oh well, all ends rosey anyway, the new flight is direct and cheaper (O.o).

So now to concentrate on finishing off the prep for Quakecon instead of worrying about transport. I've not been to Dallas, but I understand from the maps the Gaylord isnt far from the Airport. Though, I was also told its not "walking distance" in a Texas summer. Hmmmm, better pack some light clothes I guess.

As for the event, there are 8 iTG personel attending, which is truelly awesome, though we are missing a couple of people I really wanted to meet up with, which is shame. Coverage of the games themselves should be awesome with this much talent to use and im hoping I can get in on the action with the Q3 ladies. (oo-err!).

Doom3 promises to be a little more of a challenge in terms of commentry as it doesnt seem to suit my fast paced trousers on fire kinda style. But I'll reserve judgement until ive casted in Dallas. (I am my most bitter critique when it comes to how I cast btw).

The camera is packed already, complete with supply of 1gig mem cards and recharged batteries. Ready for plenty of pics to appear on ESR as well as the daily journal entries I promised. I also have the ability to take 640x480 quiktime on the camera, so lets hope they dont realise this until ive recorded a few minutes of Q4 action!!

Flight is booked for next Tuesday afternoon (arriving mid afternoon in Dallas) so first reports from Dallas (net connection allowing) should be on ESR from Wednesday along with the first pics.

Lets hope its a good one, im sure there will be plenty of stuff to send back to ESR, so stay tuned, or as kdawg would say "pencil spits commanding the platoon with morba thinking about vector to punching a donkey and daishi don't let me towel compounds so eloquently?".

A busy month ahead and PC upgrades??!?! (15 comments)
Posted by ReDeYe @ 17:26 CDT, 22 July 2005 - iMsg
After the slight comedown to normality (from the ESWC in Paris) almost 2 weeks ago now, things look to get a bit more exciting in the coming month.

Shoutcast wise, its a very busy month, with Quakecon in Dallas first up (flying out on the 9th), possibly a eurocup lan in holland and of course my favourite relaxing weekend of the year, chilling with mates at the Newbury i-series lan over the bank holiday weekend at the end of the month. Three big lans in one month cant get much busier than that!

Firstly to Quakecon though and my thoughts are firmly on doing a good job with the guys from iTG covering the nVidia competition. This includes some games that I wouldnt usually cast for, so I have had to spend the last couple of weeks learning, playing and reading up about them. Namely, Doom3 and to a lesser degree Quake 3. What it has shown me is that I missed out on many years of Quake 3 action, simply because of my prejudice in the past towards iD games (Loved Quake 1, hated Quake2). With that now firmly put to bed, Im really enjoying playing Q3. Doom3 however is a different matter. Graphically its a bit of a stonker obviously, but the gameplay seems, hmm how to put it, flawed in some indiscribable way. I cant really put my finger on it, but 12 hours of multiplayer has given me ample time to learn the weapons and most of the maps in any case, so hopefully job nearly done.

Obviously I am also looking forward to seeing Quake4 in action and perhaps even getting to play it a little. For sure, other than the competition, this should be the highlight of the week in the USA.

My other thoughts for August turn to my home life and having left a recent long term finance job, I am now contemplating a new business venture with the payoff I received. Business plans, logos, website, telephone lines... it all seems like a plethora of subjects I haven't really given any thought to for over 8 years and although the thought of working for myself again really appeals to me, there is no denying its a tough world out there nowadays.

As if that wasnt enough to be getting on with, I also intend to complete my once-yearly-pc-upgrade (that is now 2 years over due!). Currently im playing with a reasonable setup, P4 3.0, 1 gig ram and radeon 9800pro. Not too shabby I guess, but its now 2 years old and times have moved on. Its starting to show its age in some of the new games, certainly in the ones that I want to look pretty anyway.

With the payoff from my old job, it also means I can go all out and order the parts to build a mega machine that may well last me a few years (although im sure I say this every time I upgrade and still end up upgrading 12 months later...). Ive ordered an Asus An8sli board together with the latest AMD FX57 and two Geforce 7800gtx cards to run in SLi mode. Couple these items with a matched pair of 1gig sticks from corsair (2gb ram) and add in a new aluminium case from coolermaster and hey presto I should be playing doom3 in 1600x1200 with all the bells and whistles turned on high. Thats if I get time to actually build the bloody thing this month!

Im grateful really though, that not only do people enjoy my casts, but I love doing them and then add in the ability to attend ESWC, Quakecon, Eurocup, WCG etc, its just incredible. Its not really a full time job in the real sense and although everyone at iTG cast's proffesionally at all times, we are not paid proffesionals just yet (save one I guess ;)). Those days surely are not far away though, because as the e-sports world grows and gets bigger and has more proffesionally paid players and clans, it also needs the coverage to be proffesional too. Ergo - it must need proffesional broadcasters.

I look forward to the day that the e-sports world grows into the monster size it has the potential to and to that end, becomming a full time broadcaster all year round, instead of having to take out huge amounts of time from a job I have to do to earn money. For now though, Im happy just to be able to bring some of the atmosphere and excitement that only these kind of tournaments can bring. Roll on Dallas, here I come.

Lets see what iD's security is like when I film Q4 on my camera muhahaaha, I can run pretty quick, but I dont know if that would get me far in America. Heres hoping anyway, so stay tuned to ESR for the first Q4 video or read ESR for a report on how a maniacal englishman tried to steal a Q4 demo CD in Dallas! either way you win ;)

So here it is, as promised :)
