Quake 3 Arena Road Tour from 1999 (3 comments)
Posted by Badb0y @ 10:51 CDT, 22 September 2009 - iMsg
Not long ago i wrote an article about the "Quake 3 Arena Road Tour" back in 1999.

It was a promotional tour for the yet not released Quake 3 game. The big black and evil looking bus drove to the south and west in the USA. The bus itself contained 8 lan stations ready to play Q3 in an early version.

My article is in german, sorry its too much work to translate, but you get an idea of the road tour if you read my used main visitor sources of this report.

Jason "loonyboi" Bergman blogged the tour 4 days long for bluenews

Dennis “Thresh” Fong visits the tour

TexorcisT was pissed that the tourstop in Austin University had no promotion t-shirts for him. Ten years after the tour i found out why, according to the bluenews blog one tourstop before a paket with t-shirts was missing or stolen :)

Trillian visited the tourstop in Portland, Oregon and lost against her man with 1 frag in the competition, excuse "i had no sound" :D
It seems sometimes the site is down, then wait a little while.

And we have Russell “RadPipe” Lauzon, he was on the last tourstop in Los Angeles near the Activision Headquarter, on the last final tour party, and he helped to get the equipment out of the bus, buhu :(

Q3Min based on ioQuake3 (7 comments)
Posted by Badb0y @ 12:14 CDT, 31 August 2009 - iMsg
There is another project as a alternative to Openarena, called Q3Min (Minimal) based on the free and advanced ioQuake 3 engine.

The goal is to released all content under GPL, and of course for free, except the maps. Check the Q3Min Hompage and their forum.

"This is a community project managed by dedicated Quake III Arena enthusiasts. Its purpose is to provide a freely distributable minimal version of Q3A that is fully compatible with the original game created by id Software. We wish to make a package that can use different mods as well as custom maps made for the original game Q3A. The package should have a reasonably small size for easy downloading.

We do not intend to stop when the first fully functional package is released. We would like to implement, test and maybe permanently integrate different enhancements suggested by people on Q3A forums. We want to make a game even better than the original!"
Background (dont know if its true)
It seems the background is a conflict with the chief from Openarena, Leilol. A team did 80% of new textures for Openarena but it wasnt Leilol not enough GPL´ed, so this team is now working on their own Quake 3 Version.

You can download the dm-maps seperatly, and rename all the .zip to .pk3 in a directory with the dos command "ren *.zip *.pk3"

Wolfenstein Day One Patch (5 comments)
Posted by Badb0y @ 08:18 CDT, 19 August 2009 - iMsg
Activision released the Wolfenstein 1.1 Patch client/server for PC.
This update adresses some small fixes, including balancing problems and adding the sound menu. There are no performance tweaks yet.

Patch is available via autodownload or manually, client & server.

Some players celebrate the release (celebrate picture), others dont (video).

The retail mp of Wolfenstein was identicall with the leaked beta before the patch.

Hannes, the creator of ETQWpro, started working on competition mod WolfPro (Source).

In the meantime the young Endrant Studios who is responsible on the multiplayer part of Wolfenstein, announces layoffs just on release day of the retail version (Source). To let people go is not uncommon in the gaming industry after a title is done.
Bu the question is, could the studio deliver future updates with less people.

SK-Gaming has interviewed Sander 'Vo0' Kaasjager. vo0 is known from duels with fatal1ty in the Painkiller competitions and for his success in various CPMA cups.

The iview is about his recently victory in Quake 3 CPM tournament this year on the Dreamhack Summer lan, beginner tips for CPMA, why he thinks Quake Live will not succeed, Quakeworld, his clan fnatic and many more.

SK-Gaming: So what do you think the future of Quake Live is? Will it become like Quake 4 or will it survive for ages like Quakeworld is doing right now?

Vo0:
I don't know, I think its, I hope it will, I hope it will be very popular but I think after a while people will just go back to Quake 3. Because Quake 3 is still technically better then Quake Live because it has many more features, Quake 3 CPMA, then Quake Live and people will get bored of Quake Live easily, so I hope you know I really hope that Quake Live will make it but its gonna be a tough challenge.

Sad day for all Unreal Tournament fans out there. Tim Sweeney, Epic Games founder, Technical Director, and CEO says that Epic will not release a full retail version of Unreal Tournament in the next several years.

Tim Sweeney
"Unreal Tournament is certainly a major long-term priority but we're planning not to release a major retail game in the series for several years. So we have that effort somewhat on hold while we work on a few other initiatives."

Sweeney did add that Epic will continue to support Unreal Tournament 3 modding efforts, and is planning to "open up the engine to more people to use freely" sometime in the future. He even jokes that Unreal Tournament IV and V could be primarily made by the Unreal Tournament Community.

Arena Live as a browser game for Linux (100 comments)

Arena Live is now released as a browser game only for Linux OS and Firefox browser.
Arena Live is the free Quake3 Clone Open Arena, based on ioQuake3 engine, an extendend version of the id tech 3, with less bugs and more added features. Open Arena comes with own built content like new textures, models, maps, weapons, and sounds.

In the future Arena Live will support other OS. For playing you need a quick registration on the site. It´s more like a demonstration and experiment i guess, haven´t tested it by myself.

QUAKE Live support will go on (45 comments)
Posted by Badb0y @ 09:42 CDT, 26 June 2009 - iMsg
After the sale of id Software there are more interviews held with id John Carmack.

About QUAKE Live.

How about the focus on some of id's less big budget games? So, thinking specifically about the iPhone stuff that id's been doing, the mobile stuff, and also projects like Quake Live. Is that going to continue to be a focus, not only at id, but at ZeniMax in general?

John Carmack: "It probably stays at about the level that it is right now [...]"
CEO ZeniMax Robert Altman: "[..] and about the other part of your question about Quake Live, it will go on unchanged as it always has. It's something we are supportive of."
~ joystick.com interview

Hollenshead said ZeniMax's acquisition will allow id to grow its internal teams, staffing up the groups working on the next Doom — which will now be a ZeniMax game — and the Quake Live team, for starters.

QUAKE Live adding new TDM Mode (102 comments)
Posted by Badb0y @ 12:36 CDT, 10 June 2009 - iMsg
Marty is posting on the QUAKE Live forums:

Blood Run was built for Duel competition, but we're also enabling it for play in Free for All and Team Deathmatch.

Speaking of TDM, we used the QUAKE Live down-time last night, adding duel map Blood Run, to also make a change to the Team Deathmatch server configurations for higher skilled players.

We've had a number of requests to have weapon respawn times in Team Deathmatch set to 30 seconds. This creates gameplay that is difficult and frustrating for newer or lower skilled players, but we understand the value for players and teams that are higher skilled and particularly understand the nuances of TDM strategy and gameplay.
To accomodate both types of players, we've set our higher skill matches to use the requested 30 second weapon respawn times (these matches will be labeled 'pro TDM'), but left lower skill matches unchanged (these will continue to simply be labeled TDM).

This is good news ESR readers!

Left 4 Dead 24-hour until Saturday (23 comments)
Posted by Badb0y @ 18:10 CDT, 29 April 2009 - iMsg
Valve announced today that it will run a 24-hour free trial for its popular multiplayer shooter Left 4 Dead this Friday.

The trial will begin on Friday at 12:01 AM GMT (7:01 PM EST Thursday), and will include the recent Survival pack content, which introduces a new multiplayer game mode and two additional Versus campaigns.

Those who wish to give L4D and the Survival Pack a try may now pre-load everything needed to play with no obligation to purchase. A free Steam Account is needed.

Personally I hope to see some known ESR faces in L4D to fight against the zombie hordes, join the already existent ESReality Steam Group (41 members!) so we can play together.

UPDATE Valve extended the free friday 24-hour trial of Left 4 Dead (PC) through the night until Saturday at 5 pm GMT!

After the monthly statistics I thought there might be some interest for a yearly overview of the work of our Cheat and Abuse department. I gathered the statistics for cheat cases stored on ClanBase for 2008.

First some totals
In 2008 we suspended 7032 accounts with a total suspension period of around 21000 years, which makes the average suspension 36 months. Not every human is unique, some might return with a new account, some get suspended multiple times. A few people have been suspended 4 times, however most players are suspended only once.

Overall numbers
The number of suspended players per game might not come as a surprise after last months rampage. Call of Duty 2 leads the ranks with 41%! The entire Call of Duty line of games makes up for 55% of the suspended players.

Most people are cheating in a public server!

See more pie cake pictures (cheats per game / type of cheats / cheats per day) and read the conclusion from Obsidian|CB.
If you really want more statistics hopp over to Crossfire Crossfire and read the article from MalteseFalcon.

It was on this day back in 1999 that id Software announced the "gold" status of Quake III Arena, which meant that the game had passed testing and was considered complete and ready for replication and retail distribution. In other words, the game was done and soon to be in our hands! That was nine years ago and this game has refused to lie down for anyone, just like the Quakes before it. Quake III is still being used for competition, it’s still being expanded by the creative community and is still played daily by a whole lot of folks, including yours truly. So on this day I'd like to wish Quake III Arena a very happy birthday indeed!

Daniel "Elchtest" Pohl from Intel who works on a Ray Tracing grafic engine for computergames, is presenting his new homepage about QUAKE Wars Ray Traced.

As a id-Software fan and developer of Quake 3: Ray Traced and Quake 4: Ray Traced it wasn't hard to foresee a QUAKE Wars Ray Traced.

His page includes, beside new screenshots, a video which shows QUAKE Wars with a Ray Traced engine. It´s available in 3 different video resolutions.

The open source project Game Scanner is a lightweight, non-bloated and low-memory footprint software for easy browsing of your favorite or any supported internet game servers without starting the game itself.

If you are searching a thin game browser in the way All Seeing Eye was, check it out. This mostly unknown browser is ready for gamers. I use it some months now and i don´t regret it. Qtracker in comparison has more features & filter functions of course. The choice is yours.

Interview with Prozac (23 comments)
Posted by Badb0y @ 19:56 CDT, 8 September 2008 - iMsg
Germany N0jji posted on readmore.de a little interview with Sweden Cyrus "proZaC" Malakeni.

Nick: proZaC
Name: Cyrus Malakeni
Clan: Team Excello
Ex-Clans: SK, NiP, QPO, p1mp

N0jji: Hi proZaC, can you please tell me who you are, your gaming history, what clan you play and age etc..
proZaC: Yo, my name is Cyrus Malekani I'm 23 years old. I've got an extensive gaming history but lets just say I was big in q3 and right now I'm in team excello.

N0jji: For how long did you play seriously?
proZaC: Seriously huh ... Well I'd say from 99 to 03

N0jji: What do you think about swedish players, what about their aim and configs?
proZaC: Well the swedish players have always had great aim. Top of the line.
But their configs ... that's a weird question I dunno? I guess they're good?
N0jji: =) swedish players must rox because you rox to
proZaC: Haha well sweden has always had plenty of high caliber players to offer the e-sports world.

N0jji: What your parents thinking about your gaming?
proZaC: Well at first my dad was sceptical. _Very_ sceptical. But since he realized he couldn't stop me from playing he kind of eased up on me. But in the end any parent is proud of their offspring as long as they're trying hard to accomplish something.

N0jji: Tell me please your biggest successes.
proZaC: Well LA7 hands down and then EC5 - which earned me the title player of the year of 2002. I'd says that was the peak of my career.

N0jji: What is proZaC's day? Can you describe one of your usuall days?
proZaC: Depends - weekdays is mostly like, get up at 8 get some breakfast, go to work Finish at 18, go and work-out, get home at like 21.
Eat my dinner, watch something and then code til 23-00
and then it's goto #1 it's more exciting than it sounds

N0jji: Why you take nickname "proZaC" ?
proZaC: Well first it started out as a fakenick, back in the quakeworld days. Then the nick kind of stuck to me and I think it describes me as a person

N0jji: What in life do you do besides Quake? What other interests do you have & do u have a girlfriend :]?
proZaC: Can't say I got a girlfriend but some friendly girls.
Well right now I just started karate again after 4 years so I'm pretty fired up about that. Hanging with my boys and just go cray-cray on the weekends I guess.
Playing games is still a passion of mine, but there isn't that much time left for it xept for mariokart with the homies

N0jji: Your favorite map & weapon?
proZaC: Depends, 1v1 or 4v4? or 2v2? =)

N0jji: all =)
proZaC: 1v1 - ztn, I guess
2v2- dm6
4v4 - ospdm5
I like all weapones, it mostly depends on the situations
But sg and lg are favourites
and rg ofc

N0jji: Who are the top 5 Q3 players in your mind? Who is your favorite player and why?
proZaC: Such a tough question =) czm, fox, purri, 2gd, [EYE]RoLLER from back in the days
I'd say [EYE]RoLLER cause he used to buy me booze before I was eligible (sorry if the cops hunt you down because of this bro!)
And he's a helluva a great guy =)

N0jji: What mode do you like most, duel, tdm or cpma ?
proZaC: tdm - hands down.

N0jji: What is your mouse, keyboard, headphones and mousepad? an wich settings you use?
proZaC: settings, whaddya mean? There's tons of em. mouse - Logitech mx510
Keyboard - dunn some random one with good buttons.
Headphones are sennheiser something something.

N0jji: and your pad?
proZaC: A cloth steelpad dunno the name

N0jji: btw i have a Steelpad QcK mini =)
Ok thank for you time & i wish you GL HF in the future of you eSports career =)
btw i hope you play Quakelive cya and ty 4 the interview
proZaC: Np, cheers bro

On the minimizor website is a new mouse tool availible.
for all wicked fetish mouse users. check it out.

DInput is written to change the use of Windows API coordinates
(in games or applications) to Direct Input coordinates.

Direct Input has got the following advantages compared to Windows API coordinates:

Features:
» No pointer ballistics (impossible cause of acceleration)
» It's designed to work on high resolution mice (win coordinates aren't)
» Faster (in theory)
» Different and mostly smoother feeling
» Because of the above reasons it mostly helps against negative acceleration

Study:Hardcore gamers not social outcast (No comments)

A study by an Australian University has revealed that video game addicts don't suffer from social problems, shyness, or self-esteem problems.

According to media outlet News.com.au, Dan Loton from Melbourne-based Victoria University undertook an honours research project to determine if there was a relationship between games, social skills, and self-esteem. Loton found that there was no direct connection between excessive game playing and social skills and self-esteem. According to the study, when it comes to game addicts, only 1 percent suffered from shyness.

However, it wasn't all good news for hardcore gamers.

Deus Ex for free (No comments)

GameTap announces the new free game they are offering as of this week is the Deus Ex: Game of the Year edition, ION Storm's cyberpunk RPG/first-person shooter first released in 2000.

Download

Hint:
Unfortunately, with Gametap you can't play Deus Ex in widescreen, because that requires an INI edit (and the GameTap version doesn't have any INI files). You also can't use any mods.

For someone who wishes to take advantage of those things, $10 for the game on Steam is a good deal. Buying it on Steam or finding a copy on CD would be required to play in widescreen or play with mods.

Bye bye Kwari (61 comments)

According to developmag, Kwari the online game that offering 'cash for kills' has run out of money and gone into receivership.

Kwari, the 'cash for kills' online FPS which offered players the chance to win money by betting on their performance, has closed just a year after it launched.

The company behind game, designed in the UK but managed by Australian web firm Micro Forte, has reportedly gone into receivership. Last year in 2007 they celebrated 22 years of existing. The business had expected to make money by asking players to pay for bullets used during gameplay, but clearly the company ran out of ammo itself.

In February i made a news post called Kwari: $20K Jackpot Won.
The Official website kwari.com has been down for 2 weeks, and the page kwarithegame has very little information to offer.

In anticipation of the release of Postal 3 in October 2008, the multiplayer element of Postal 2 has been made available for free.

Originally released in 2004, the Postal series of games gained notoriety for it's high levels of violence and stereotyping and as far as we know, is still banned in Australia, Brazil and New Zealand.

Valve laughs at "PC gaming is dying" (79 comments)

Drinn posting a news on SK Gaming sk-gaming called Valve laughs at "PC gaming is dying" story.

A hot topic in the gaming community has been the "PC gaming is dying" claim that some of the retailers and game developers like Infinity Ward (CoD4 CoD 4) and Crytek (Crysis Crysis) have been saying for quite some time.

Shacknews interviewed Valve's big boss Doug Lombardi, who said in the very beginning that Valve actually laughs to at that claim:

"I mean, I think, we sort of laugh at it. Because we've been wildly successful--we're very fortunate, you know. Our games have all done really, really well, Steam has taken off and become this whole other business for us, Valve has never been in better shape--and yet everybody is talking about how in the PC world, the sky is falling. And we're like, we've been doing this for 10 years now--actually 12 years since the company started, 10 years since the first game came out--and we've never been in better shape, financially or otherwise. The company is over 160 people now--it was 20 people when we shipped Half-Life. We've got multiple projects going--we were always a one-project-at-a-time group."

GT-R: Quake 4 Mod Could Revive The Game? (60 comments)

Lately, I've been getting back into Quake 4, watching some CTF games and playing relaxed duels with friends, and I've been hearing murmers of a new mod for the game that may give everyone what they've so desperately needed from the game.

Introducing GT-Revolution. From the news on the site, the mod tauts quite an impressive list of changes and advantages it has over the dominant "Q4MAX", such as improved Netcode, a CPM-style of movement, improved brightskins, and much more.

You guys can view a trailer for the newest beta of the mod (to be released later this year) here (http://www.quakeunity.com/file=2563). I'm actually pretty excited about the mod as Quake 4 really was a great game....on LAN. You can visit the mod's page here (http://gtr.quakedev.com).

Infinity Ward shocked about PC Piracy (40 comments)
Posted by Badb0y @ 14:28 CST, 19 January 2008 - iMsg
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PC, PS3, X360) developer Infinity Ward was shocked to discover an unexpectedly high level of piracy in regards to the PC versions.

The developer is quite happy with the recent number of PC owners playing the game online, the studio's community relations manager "fourzerotwo" expressed amazement at how many of those players were running a pirated copy of the game.

Besides the discussion of piracy und pc gaming,
I know there are a few "cracked servers" without cdkey authifications out there, but its new to me that with a fake or generated cdkey it is possible to play on online game servers.
I think Infinity Ward was a little bit sleepy in that matter, cdkey authification through masterserver is just standard nowadays.

What do you think of the pc piracy topic, will piracy attack pc gaming? Will developers only do console games in the future because they fear piracy?

Reviews: Soldier of Fortune: Payback (1 comment)
Posted by Badb0y @ 08:29 CST, 15 January 2008 - iMsg
DuRuS on ClanBase did a review of Soldier of Fortune: PayBack. He looked at the singleplayer and multiplayer and came to the conclusion that this game is really bad.

Also there is a link to a video review to Gametrailers.com. I watched many good and hard critics reviews there.

Conclusion
To conclude I feel this game is simply terrible, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, unless you are one sick minded individual that likes to go around shooting people’s arms and legs off. But if you are like that, then probably you could get more fun out of something like GTA or Manhunt. For those Soldier of Fortune fans out there, I would recommend sticking with SoF:2.

In this clip, you'll see "a classic Super Mario Bros. level recreated in 3D, using the Doom engine." Though the skin may not be perfect, it's definitely a conversation piece to say the least.
