Betting Reset (87 comments)
Posted by becks @ 07:23 CST, 14 January 2010 - iMsg
Good day, Everyone. Good morning, dear students.

As the current betting season has been going on for very long now, we have decided it is time to reset it in the near future. After all, cYmoZz, as the current leader ,has more than 600 times the amount of money than anyone who starts fresh and also would need more than 60 simultaneous fixtures to bet it all.

Resetting means: The money people have accumulated will be moved to savings and everybody starts with 500 ESR$. Most likely, we will also have a nifty news post, praising the winners for their enournous nerdiness.

P.S.: If anyone wants to donate a prize for the betting competiton, or find a sponsor for a prize, we would humbly accept it :)

Tomorrow I'll fly to Tallinn to visit two friends who are studying there over the weekend.

So, if any of the Estonians around (well, not that FRRAGGERR guy, obviously) here have some insider tips on what to do I'd appreciate it. Though I think my friends know a few clubs by now.

Dunno if I'll be able to check ESR when I'm there, though. :)

P.S: Micke, you have your puppet so I'm sure you will survive ;)

I watched "Whatever works" yesterday and I must say Boris Yellnikoff truly captivates the spirit of the Quake community and ESR.
Therefore, I am convinced Woody Allen frequents this site.

I think he is Jonesy Inc.

Anyway, do watch it, all the whining and trolling in it is worth a laugh :)

New Rig - Silent (70 comments)
Posted by becks @ 06:51 CDT, 31 August 2009 - iMsg
Moin everybody

I've decided it's about time to buy a new rig, which is obviously easy enough to do.
Except this time I want one that doesn't sound like a turbocharger blender. But for transport reasons I'm kinda against water cooling, too.
So, if anyone has some knowledge considering passive or almost soundless cooling or can persuade me to actually go for water cooling and input would be appreciated. Even a good website with reviews on the matter would help.

Even more appreciated would be someone with a little extra time, who likes to play the "Build a rig" game.

For that here is pretty much what I am aiming at:

- Complete Desktop including case, psu, etc. Excluding only the monitor and soundcard.
- I don't have a preference in the ATI vs. Nvidia or Intel vs. AMD realms.
- However, I do prefer quality brands, so no Asrock mainboards etc.
- Aim of the thing is obviously to play games, but also to run photoshop, premiere pro, etc well enough.
- As said rig should be very silent so if I get 20 frames less and pay 100€ more, so be it.
- Price range is about 500 - 600€.
- being able to upgrade the thing and/or overclock it later on would be nice but definately not a must.

So, I hope the experts find this thread :)

Conspiracy Theories (79 comments)
Posted by becks @ 09:24 CDT, 22 July 2009 - iMsg
(If your Jonesy indicator just went. That was intentional ;) )

We hear a lot of those going round lately and made me think about them in general.
And I'm starting to think many people believe in these as a replacement for religion.

Think about it:

1.
Arguably most religions started because people saw something which they couldn't explain themselves. Then someone came along and offered an explanation involving higher powers, often involving bad and evil.

Conspiracy theories always have a powerful evil.

2.
Religious people often try to use everything they can find to prove their belief. However, any contrary arguments either ignored completely or waved away with sentences like "God's ways are mysterious".

Conspiracy theorists will not believe any opposing arguments or fact, because they can simply claim the evil power manufactured facts, let evidence dissappear or influenced people.

3.
In normal discussions, every so often you will a person admitting he was wrong and accept the opposing arguments.
I have not seen that happen with either Religion nor a conspiracy theory.
If people stop believing in those they always make that decision on their own.

4.
I think 3. happens because of the following:
If you argue against them religious people will consider you below them as think they have seen the truth, while you haven't. So, they will not consider your arguments to be of equal value.
Likewise conspiracy theorists think they have seen the real truth while you have been fooled by the evil powers. Therefore, your arguments cannot be correct.

5.
The psychological aspect. (Now this is even more opinionated)
Many people want to believe in a higher power because is relieves some of their responsibility for the own life. "God is watching over me", "God send this plague as a sign", Kind of in a "I have faith, I am holier than thou." - way.
Similariy, conspiracy theorists want to believe in an evil power because it makes them feel better. When they question the powers in charge and struggle against evil plots and "stupidity" among the "sheep", they feel as if they are fighting for Good against Evil. Like a wise man, teaching little children. You obviously can't have the self assuring feeling if you agree with the majority.

Ok, now. Am I the only one who thinks like that, or do others agree or have similar thoughts?
Or am I maybe paid by the US government as a sheperd?

Dicsuss, plz.

Shopping in Berlin (85 comments)
Posted by becks @ 10:19 CDT, 8 July 2009 - iMsg
Rahzei asked me via im to write a few thing about locations for shopping in Berlin and I thought I’d do it in a journal so others can use the info as well or contribute.

As I said I don’t live in Berlin myself, at least not for 15 years, so I’m not an expert. But I do
visit my parent sometimes, so I know a little.

I I guess you will find a lot of it in the tourist guides as well, but here goes:

If you have anything further questions feel free to ask. And others feel free to add infos, I'll try to edit them in.

Queue rumor thread (95 comments)
Posted by becks @ 13:57 CST, 25 February 2009 - iMsg
Here we post rumors and assumptions why the queue is so fucking long.

I'll start:

The biggest (I think) German news site has an article on QL on their main page: http://www.spiegel.de/
and suddenly the queue is up to 50.000 thousand. Is my mom trying it now, too?

Do you think that's it or maybe American kiddies getting back from school?

Or is it maybe a marketing gag?

Discuss and troll, please.

what do you think .. is identified with? (183 comments)
Posted by becks @ 05:00 CDT, 13 October 2008 - iMsg
Gonna steal from [mash], who wrote this line:

what do you think the UK is identified with in the world?

I thought it's a good question, actually. And is kinda lost in a thread about bashing a soon-to-be 3rd world country.
So here are my thoughts:

I kinda have a split view of the English or rather I pictures two groups of English people, All opinions are very subjective and biased, as the question demands.

On the one hand: respectable, educated, open to that world, yet conservative and somewhat boring statesmen types with a distinct sense of humour.

On the other hand: many herds of sheep, unable and unwilling to look beyond their own nose and to experience anything new.

Also: bad teeth for both groups (just an image in my head, sue me)

Anyone mind to share the views of the English, have a go at the Germans or any other country for that matter? I really am curious.

Remember, this is not where you show how open - minded and forgiving you are, but to describe the picture(s) that first comes to mind when you think of the "... people", Have fun.

/edit:
Deleted 2nd picture again, cause it might influence people's replies.

Since replying to that post doesn't work (what a coincidence :/) I'll do it here.

You'll never find your posts looking on the spamfest that is 4chan.

Also:

When esr fucks up my posts, they just don't get posted anywhere 95% of the time and only very rarely end up somewhere else.

It that the same for everyone or just some?

Also some bored mathematician please figure out the bug is somehow related to the post number, k thx :)

I made this movie about a year ago, with material I had saved on my drive for two more years. Was mainly meant for my teammates so I never got around to actually uploading it somewhere.

Just watched it again a few days ago and figured I might as well release it to the public, cause who knows maybe some people will enjoy it :)

Anyway, if you have a little bandwidth left grab a beer and have a look. I think at least the blooper part in the end is worth it.

The original version is about 26 minutes. If anyone actually wants to see the "wgc.beersports (Are you bored yet)" version just write me and I'll upload it somewhere.
