Frag Movie Contest - Need Opinions (25 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 23:11 CST, 12 February 2009 - iMsg
I've been watching frags videos for a while, and I've watched a lot of amazing videos. From UT, to Quake, to CS. Sure, the games can be questionable, but I've seen some amazing videos that I can re-watch over and over again.

I really wanted to give back to the people making the frag videos. Some of these artists are amazing, the way they sync the video with the audio, the way the audio is used, the cinematics, everything. After watching Trixo, I definitely felt that something needed to be done.

I had an idea. I had an idea for a side event at Quakecon. People would submit videos for recommendation, and voting would start. Votes would be tallied online, and the day before Quakecon, be counted. Two categories; defrag and frag. After votes are tallied, and on the 2nd last day of Quakecon (before the finals) all 3 would be shown in the finals room on projectors. Each would be 10 minutes, so about an hour. After, winners would be announced, and there would be cash prizes.

Both casuals and competitive could watch, and enjoy the top frag and defrag movies.

I presented the idea to someone at ID, which he took and presented to people higher up.

No go.

So, I'm here to ask some suggestions. I still want to give back to the movie makers, so it looks like I'll need to do it on my own.

I have some questions. Since this is community driven, it needs to satisfy the communities. I come here with a set of questions that I hope you guys can answer honestly.

- Should we allow previously released frag videos, or require the movie makers to make new videos for this contest?

- If they're new ones, do we do a time limit?

- Do you want the categories split? Defrag and Frag? Or just have one or the other?

- How much would be appropriate for cash prizes? $1000/1st, $500/2nd, $250/3rd? Is that an acceptable prize purse? Hardware?

- What about voting? Is online voting good enough? Better method to prevent cheating?

- What about the voting process? (eg: Videos are recommended, then top get put into a voting pool)

- Do we do an online premiere? Maybe something on uStream to announce the winners?

Any extra idea or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I hope to run it this summer, maybe into the fall.

Thanks! =D

Suffer with QL, Or Prolong Q3? (216 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 14:04 CST, 9 December 2008 - iMsg
I was pretty excited when QL was released and I got an account. It was fun to pla something new and fresh, and play with lots of people. I was excited that it was going to get massive and have tons of tournaments for it.

But then I realized slowly, that it's nothing new. If anything, at it's current state, it's worse than what we had.

Here's the main problem I see with this. We can all agree that in terms of balance, movement, etc, that Quake 3 is the best out of all the Quakes. MOST people will agree on this, I know some of the QW and CPM'ers won't.

We know QL needs more time. It's not that it's bad, it's just at its current state, it's difficult to play competitively. Eventually we will probably get these features, but we need to focus on 2009 right now.

Regardless, we know that Quake 3 is the best we can get right now. The main reason people DON'T want to go back to Quake 3 is because it's the same game and maps we've been playing since it's release 8 years ago. Of course we want to do something new and fresh. But, the only thing we have that qualifies for that right now is Quake Live...

Quake Live maps are the same as Quake 3 ones, plus some new ones developed by ID. Of course I'm not saying Quake Live is terrible because it doesn't have some maps like Hub and ZTN, but that is one of the problem. Community made maps are accepted by the community, and in some cases, used a lot. The reason ID can't use these maps are obviously copyright reasons, and I'm not holding it against them.

My main issue is this. We have two options right now. Either we keep playing the same maps we've been playing in Quake Live, and wait for more needed features to be released, or we continue to play Quake 3, BUT, we play different maps.

We're all tired of DM6, DM9, Hub, and so on.

I've found a few duel maps that I thought were pretty good. Maybe a NEW game isn't what we need to have fun again. Maybe it's just a few new maps in the game we already love. Below are a few I found that I liked.

http://lvlworld.com/#c=m8&i=1964&d=28...p;p=review

http://lvlworld.com/#c=m4&i=2009&d=28...p;p=review

http://lvlworld.com/#c=m7&i=2009&d=20...p;p=review

ESWC will be making its decision somewhat soon about what game we use, and the maps.

Do we make a push for new maps, and make it fresh? Do we keep playing the same maps since 2000? Do we move to Quake Live and support that? Or wait until it's 100% ready?

Personally, I rather see some new maps in the mix, make it feel new, and learn new strategies and watch what could be amazing games.

Moving To Europe? (174 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 01:07 CST, 18 November 2008 - iMsg
Thinking about some stuff on the bus ride home from work tonight...I thought that maybe I don't belong in the country where I currently live, Canada.

I was just thinking about my general interests, and overall, there isn't a lot of places in Canada to the things I want to do. Sure, southern Ontario has places like Toronto and the GTA, but, it's still Canada.

The area just frustrates me. Takes 7 hours to get to anywhere decent, and it's HORRIBLE for public transportation (Greyhound is expensive, we barely have trains, and they don't go far).

I'm a huge avid listener/supporter of Electronica, and Canada pretty much only has 'concerts' (Aka, lets bring shitty top 40 bands and let them play). I have a few friends in Europe that are always telling me about insane shit they go to pretty much every months (Saw some HTID events, holy fucking shit awesome).

I'd kill to see Sharkey and Hixxy live. Honestly, murder.

Gaming is better there too. Lower pings, smaller country in terms of area squared, but, same amount of people (roughly). USA is filled with stupid WoW players, and quite frankly, seeing a league like MLG get huge attention is utterly pathetic. Both piss me off. I'm somewhat competitive in Quake, but I'd think I'd play more if I lived in a place like that.

So yeah, I'm considering this Europe thing. I don't know exactly where to go, but I'm looking for advice. I spent a week or so in a small town outside of Oxfordshire, wasn't really 'fun'. I'm thinking I'd like to live in a bigger city, but not absolutely massive with shit tons of people (Rather live in a city with less multiculturalism).

I wouldn't move now, not until I get my diploma. Once I get that, I think I wouldn't have a problem moving. I don't have much here really. Canada is nice if you're...not me.

E-Sports Winnings - Downhill? (141 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 18:53 CDT, 9 October 2008 - iMsg
Back in 2001, when Quake 3 was extremely popular, there were numerous tournaments for it, but more importantly, there was a lot of prize money to be given away.

I look at what's given away now, and I couldn't help but think that it's somehow gone downhill. I decided to look up some stats, and see for myself how good, or how bad, it's progressed.

It seems that Quake is becoming more and more of a pipedream (Thank you Fooki!) and to even consider quitting school, not going to school, or not working, just to compete in Quake, is extremely naive, and idiotic (From a logical business and life sense).

So, here is just a general summary of what I found. I'm not hiding anything really. I'm simply posting the big tournaments results, as well as prize money. No bullshit here.

I've included an image for those people who prefer graphs.

2 - $1500 - Magnus "LLL.Fox" Olsson
3 - $1000 - Maciej "srs.av3k" Krzykowski

Can anyone really say that E-sports has progressed over the years? Sure, more companies are interested in advertising, and teams can obtain company sponsors more easily, but what's the point if we're competing for barely anything?

Cypher won around $20,000 - $30,000. Sure, that's great, but that's nothing compared to 2000, or 2001. He could of won that in ONE tournament. A player could of went to 3 or 4 tournaments, and placed 3rd, and would of won the same amount of money as him, if not more. Someone like Rapha who has been doing very well lately, hasn't been receiving that much money in terms of winnings. Him placing 3rd in three tournaments in 2000 or 2001 would make his winnings more than Cypher this year.

I'm not trying to put any form of negativity on the leagues or tournaments. They do what they can to stay alive and functioning.

My main problem is that at this rate, and looking at the financial aspect of it, E-Sports isn't going anywhere but downhill. Sure, the leagues and tournaments have become extremely impressive in terms of presentation, and ceremonies, etc, but if everything is all show, and the players get nothing, that isn't balanced. The only viable league we have at this moment that promises any form of realistic winnings (That means something you could live off of) is the CGS. $25,000 a year for a player, plus winnings. Trust me, I don't really like the CGS (Mostly the games it chooses) but right now, it's the only realistic method of competing in games, and keeping it as a 'job'.

I can't see leagues like WCG and ESWC obtaining more money as the years go along. Look at the statistics. Everything is going downhill from here. Back in 2001, it would have made realistic sense to drop out of school to compete in Quake (assuming you were actually good). You could place third in a tournament and receive $7,000 or even $10,000. Now? Maybe $3000, maybe $1000.

Even Dreamhack this year doesn't offer that much prize money (I'll give them the benefit of the doubt because they have it split between 3 tournaments).

So where do we go from here? Do we keep running tournaments with mediocre amounts of winnings that look fantastic, or try harder to get more money towards the players?

I’m not trying to offend anyone running leagues and tournaments. I know they try as hard as they can to produce the best tournament possible (The people running ESWC, WCG, etc) but I’m just disappointed that in terms of ‘pro-gaming’, and making a living of games, we’ve gone nowhere but downhill.

Sorry folks, after seeing that, I can't say it's going to be ANYTHING good.

Can anyone else say that? Can anyone else seriously say that it still has potential to be a good movie?

When I mean 'good', I mean, sticking to a story, and not whoring it with stupid Hollywood cliche scenes and love bullshit.

Quake 5 - There Will Be No Mods (108 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 12:17 CDT, 19 September 2008 - iMsg
Or, that's what it seems.

The id Tech 5 engine uses 'MegaTextures' - huge texture maps (up to 128000x128000 pixels) that require huge amounts of preprocessing to create.

id - and John Carmack in particular - are still very much pro-modding and have confirmed their plans to eventually open-source id Tech 5, but are unsure if there is a way around this technical limitation. Simply put, it is unlikely that any modder would have the computing resources that are required.

So the Tech5 engine is going to be some massive graphically amazing engine, that we can't mod. And Quake 5 is going to be on this thing (Assuming we get a Quake 5).

That means there can't be any mods, so Quake 5 multiplayer has to be 90% perfect out of the box for it to be played seriously.

Why do I see this as a repeat story of Quake 4?

Maybe they'll shock us all and make it amazing. But, things like this don't make it seem probable.

Oh well, we have Quake Live.

Yesterday we informed our readers that upcoming game “severity” was cancelled, today we were contacted by a developer of the game who confirmed the opposite was true!

Hey all,

Saw this post by César Salinas.

Severity cancelled? Funny, that’s the first I’ve heard of it.

Severity development is in stealth mode, we’ll talk about it when it’s ready to show. :D

How are these tournaments still going, who sponsors these idiots?

Seems like the 'urban' crowd found their game.

Only they would turn a game into quick matches with money on the line. Plus typical "East Coast vs West Coast" shit.

Thank GOD the SF community isn't like this.

Advice For Quake on LCD (39 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 18:13 CDT, 27 July 2008 - iMsg
Alright, so for ESWC Canada coming up I have to use a shitty LCD..

Anyway, I can get 75hz on 1280x1024.

But, is it better to go with a lower resolution? Or, so I just use 1280x1024?

Also, maxfps will NOT change for me. I read that com_maxfps 74 was best for a 75hz LCD. Any idea on how to change it?

And what about mouse sensitivity? I remember people telling me that you have to change your mouse sens as you increase/decrease resolution. I normally use 800x600, but when I went to 1280x1024, the sensitivity felt fine, felt the same as before.

Any other advice or help for playing on an LCD would be appreciated =D

I only have to use it for next week, then I'll be back on my CRT.

Also, should I just go and buy a 20" widescreen 2ms LCD for the tournament then return it?

I have a 8ms 19" 4:3, and the 8ms is absolutely brutal. I remember looking at a 2ms before, in a different game, and it didn't look better. What should I do?

Thanks =D

Tier Ranks For Quake Players (Concept) (55 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 15:45 CDT, 24 July 2008 - iMsg
Tier Ranking For Quake Players

I made this list to see if this number would be well suited for a tier list. Quake Live is coming out, and I thought maybe I'd write this up as a possible idea or solution to the matchmaking issue.

I think it's pretty simple, but if you dis-agree, or have alternative tier list ideas, please post some CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.

1. Beginner - "What's a Quake?"

This player is the absolute newest person you can put on this list. This person has NEVER touched Quake before, let alone any other DM FPS. This player knows the bare minimum of the game, just enough to go into a FFA server and be satisfied. Don't expect this player to know anything previous about any Quake games, and don't expect this person to be using some fancy mouse. Don't even expect them to change the mouse sensitivity in the options. Common alias - "Unnamed Player"

Some common traits to this person would be using auto-graphics (Not adjusting graphics at all), all the weapons to the scroll wheel, NO idea of the concept of advanced movement, joining servers regardless of ping, and no map knowledge.

2. Meathead - "FUCKING CHEATERS!"

This player knows the basics of the game, the maps, weapons, etc. While this player still plays on some FFA servers, he might venture into an occasional CTF or TDM game. He might even try to do a Duel, but without surprise, will quit the duel two minutes in. Expect this player to change some options, such as sensitivity, and name. This player will typically have enough courage to talk to friends about how much he 'pwned n00bs' in a server while waiting in line to purchase his new $110 mouse (He thinks it will make him play better). Common alias - "ugotpwn3d"

3. Intermediate - "Wait, what's VQ3?"

This player is in the middle of everything. He knows more then the basics, isn't afraid to go into console, and has changed binds for each weapon. He's the player that accepts a loss, and moves on (usually). This player will usually understand the concept of CPMA, but will still need help. You'll see these players in IRC asking for help with certain situations, asking what certain cvars do, etc. This player understands that the competitive nature of this game exists, and is just beginning to explore it. He's ready to learn more, and people shouldn't be hesitant to help this person. He/She understands the concept of advanced movement, and is decent at it. This player also might even have their own custom config, which they will maintain a couple times in a month.

4. Advanced - "Wasn't Mega spawn at 21?"

This is the struggling point of a lot of players, and usually the highest tier most players will reach. This player knows and fully understands the concepts of competitive gaming, knows and installs any form of Pro-Mods, has his own custom config, knows a lot of cvars, and also watches demos (depends on person). This player knows the timing for all weapons, armours, items, and so on. In terms of game knowledge, this person is usually the same as Tier 5 player. The only thing separating these two tiers is pure skill, experience, and talent. A player here will lose to a Tier 5 because of experience. There's nothing wrong at this point with a Tier 4 player, the only thing left to do is for this player to keep playing more and more to get more experience. This player needs to do his best as positioning, item control, knowing your opponent, "Mind fucking", and overall, being a good duelist. Expect this player to not jump into gimmicky gaming products, and to occasionally alias while playing online.

5. Expert - "When is CPL sending my check?"

Top of the game, top of the world. Fox, Cooller, CZM (In his prime) and so on, are all considered in this tier. These players have an extremely large amount of experience, and are competing in a professional level. There isn't a lot to say about this tier, since most players will know exactly who can be considered in this.

ESL North America - VQ3 Quake 3 (6 comments)

Well, it seems that some of the NA ESL people might be interested in an online Quake tournament/competition.

It's unknown exactly what would happen, and when, but the main point is, we might be able to get Quake 3 into ESL, assuming there are enough numbers.

So, this is for QUAKE 3 VQ3 or possible QUAKE LIVE.

I know Quake Live isn't exactly ready for competition, but after Quakecon, maybe we might get a big update.

Regardless, sign this if you want Quake 3 VQ3 in ESL!

Quake Live At Quakecon - Good/Bad? (42 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 02:50 CDT, 12 July 2008 - iMsg
I was really hoping for Quake 3 at Quakecon this year. I really was.

It's a shame it's not there, but I don't think it's any better that Quake Live is there.

From a business and marketing perspective, yes, ID needs to advertise and push the game as much as possible. I grant them that. It's the ONLY decision they could do. Quake 4 has low amount of people playing, hard to find in stores, Quake 3 has a bit more, but impossible to find the game, and well, that's it. Sure, Steam exists, but a lot of users can't purchase online.

So I covered the business perspective. ID pretty much HAD to do it. Unfortunately, from a players perspective, we're just a tad worried right now.

Okay, I lied about being a tad worried, a lot of us are just extremely frustrated with this decision. It's nothing against Quakecon or the Quakecon staff, this decision was 100% out of their hands.

Quake Live duel and CTF. So, shall I list the problems? And see if you agree with me? Other suggestions would be great =)

Both modes are suffering a lot in terms of competitive play right now.

For CTF, it's lacking a lot of good maps. There really isn't a lot there. Also, weapons. I see things like Chainguns and proximity mines. Mines alone change the game a LOT, and what's probably going to happen is have those disabled in servers. Plus, powerups too (Excluding quad + HASTE).

Duel suffers the same problem with maps. We have T4, DM6, DM9, and the new map (Furious Heights?) Tested it out a bit, seems okay).

I think we either need new OLD maps, as in, updated ones with proper item locations, or just completely new maps. I saw someone made Monsoon for Q3. It's a little buggy with VQ3 movement, but I think that's the step we need to keep a game like this fresh.

Anyway, yes, maps are a big issue right now for both modes.

For the game it's self, I actually have a lot of problems with it in terms of competitive play. I'll just list them with a brief description.

No Dedicated Servers: So all players who want to practice on LAN, can't. So, players practicing in the Hlton can't run and setup their own servers to practice on.

Proximity Mine + other new weapons: Hopefully can be disabled at Quakecon. Honestly, I can't imagine Q3 CTF with those ridiculous weapons on.

Lack of console commands/cvars: There is a LOT missing. Some of the biggest problems I have is being unable to remove the LG-hit animation (The giant ball of LG that appears when you hit a player), picmip not affecting item shots (I use a picmip 5 textures, with picmip 5 LG, giant big thing), crosshair color, removing crosshair pulse, unable to call timeout, many more. Some of these might have been added in new release, but you get the point.

Bugs: It's getting better, a lot of users have frame rate issues. I have it myself, but I can change video card drivers, browser, etc. I'm sure they'll be running 125fps on the PC's there anyways. But for home use and practicing, it's hard to play when you can only get 50fps, and the menu cursor won't move (Two problems I'm having at the moment).

Private Game: Don't have an invite? Might be screwed. The system might have changed a bit, but it took 30+ days for my invite to go through. If that's still the case, you'll get your invite sent to you on your flight to Dallas.

It's a BETA: Could it be finalized before Qcon? Who knows, but as it stands now, it's still a beta. It kind of explains its self.

It's nothing against Quake Live really. I think the idea is great, and the game is decent. The only problem I have right now (And a lot of people agree with me) is that the game isn't ready for full-blown competition yet. There's still a lot of worked to be done with it. I think if they waited until next year, it would have been a lot better. I know Quake Live will be very good in the future, I don't doubt that, but at its state right now, it's just not ready for competition use.

Split The Qcon BYOC and Tournament Event (21 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 16:31 CDT, 7 July 2008 - iMsg
Just an idea.

First off, Quakecon is a massive BYOC and tournament, and most of the staff is working on the BYOC. Now, most tournament players don't care about the BYOC. Most of us need to practice and play for the tournament, etc.

Basically, split the two. It's obvious Qcon staff and Qcon attendees have NO positive thought process about the Tournament. If Qcon staff truly cared, we'd have the tournament games announced a LONG time ago.

When I say 'split' them, I mean have them at different times in the year. As an example. one in the summer, one in the winter.

Three weeks left, and no announcements. Sure, all the BYOC'ers don't understand the problem, that's because they're BYOC'ers. We need to purchase flights, we need to get money from our sponsors, book of time for work, and so on. For example, this year Quake 3 is being used in most tournaments, so if Q3 is used, most of us wouldn't go to the event, because we haven't practiced it at all. Sort of like playing Football all year, then expected to play in a Soccer tournament. Yes, Quake 3 and 4 are VERY different.

Your BYOC'ers don't care about the tournament and players either. I've asked many people on Quakecon IRC about the tournament, and NONE of them want anything to do with it. Not only that, they completely unnecessarily make fun of us, insult us, harass us, etc. If a BYOC'er knows a person is going to Qcon for the tournament, they tell them usually to just fuck off.

Listen, all these BYOC'ers need to get a grip. Most of them live near the event, and drive 10 minutes to get there. Once they get there, they go to the BYOC, stay up all night, and play CS.

And those players have the BALLS to tell us tournament players the 'meaning' of Quakecon. Sorry, but I'm playing Quake (And playing it competitively) spending hundreds of dollars to FLY to the event, and compete in it.

The hostility of your BYOC'ers on the forums and in IRC are typical of an average douchebag/asshole.

Just split the two events. Have one in the summer, the other in the winter.

That way, specific staff can focus 100% on the tournament, and the other can deal with the BYOC.

I have NOTHING against the BYOC'ers, but when they tell me to fuck off because I compete seriously in a Quake game, things need to be said.

The Office US - Jim + Ryan + Website? (No comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 16:40 CDT, 3 July 2008 - iMsg
*Office fans only read, the rest can go back to bugging Walter!*

Also, this is US version.

Okay, so in the 4th season, later in the season, Ryan calls Jim into the conference room, Toby is already in there, and tells Jim he's getting a verbal warning for lack of sales numbers, etc. Toby did this because he's jealous of the relationship he has with Pam, but RYAN is doing this for a different reason.

When Jim asks "Is this about what I said to Wallace about the website?" Ryan denies it, says he enjoys constructive critisism.

But, in another episode, that situation arises again, and Jim mentions the situation with "Wallace at the Christmas Party" and Ryan still denies it.

So, Jim talked to Wallace about Ryans website at a Christmas party (I assume he said bad things about the website).

The only problem is, that situation never happened in the 4th season.

It had to of happened after S4 Episode 2, that's when the website launched.

As you remember, in the middle of the reason, we were WONDERFULLY greeted with the writers strike.

I went through all of the S4 episodes, and STILL can't find where Jim talks to Wallace about the website (Letalone a Christmas party altogether in the 4th Season)

So, did we lose an episode?

Because, I think we did. I can't find that event anywhere. I'm thinking a few episodes got cut from the season completely.

Am I crazy? Or, did I miss something.

Quakecons Pathetic 2008 Start: UPDATE (23 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 05:56 CDT, 30 June 2008 - iMsg
I actually had plans to go to Quakecon this year. I've never been, but I've always wanted to go to a big event like this.

The rumor going around, is that Quakecon is using Quake 3 1v1 and Quake 4 CTF. Now, it's just a rumor, complete speculation. If they were to actually use Quake 3 1v1, I'd definitely go, but, there's a problem.

Today is June 30th, which means in one month, Quakecon starts.

One month away, and in terms of competition and games, nothing has been announced. Nothing. The public has no idea about the games being used. No idea.

I told myself, that if Quakecon doesn't announce anything by July 1st, I'm not going.

I'm sorry, but a tournament as large is this, can't announce games with ONE month left before the event. This is absolutely insane. I'm supposed to spend hundreds of dollars more on plane tickets, just because they want to dick us around? How hard is it to choose games, and announce it a few months in advance?

I talked to someone who works at the Quakecon events, and he explained to me that it's out of the Quakecon Staffs hands. I don't remember exactly, but he said that at this point, it was either the sponsors decisions, or ID Softwares decision. He said that they write proposal letters to ID for games to be used, and they decide.

So technically, it's nothing against Quakecon, more or less about ID or it's sponsors.

Regardless, this is just bullshit, and insane.

They really need to help out EVERYONE and just announce games earlier, I'd be happy with two months in advance.

Buying plane tickets last minute is NOT fun, usually everything is sold out, and super expensive. My flight is about $150-$300 more compared to two months ago.

I'm not asking for a Boycott or anything, but, this is just bullshit. Someone needs to get their act together. This is a massive gaming tournament, with people flying in all around the world, and you announce the games with less then a month away from your tournament?

Lame.

*UPDATE*

So, I calmed down a bit. Heh.

I talked to some people in IRC, and they fully explained the system and how it works, but it wasn't anything I didn't know already.

What seems to be the main problem, is that the proposal letters sent from Qcon Tournament staff need to be sent our sooner. The ones for this event were sent out roughly 2 or 3 weeks ago. The thing about this, is that they can be sent anytime during the year.

So, if they were to send these letters in February, we would know what games would be used in tournaments at around March or so.

Hopefully we can see a change next year, send those letters sooner!

Quake 3 on Laptop: FIXED (6 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 17:34 CDT, 28 June 2008 - iMsg
I bought a Vista laptop about a year ago, and I want to start using it for Quake.

It's a Dual core, gig of ram, and has a Geforce Go 6150 in it. I THINK it's onboard, and NOT a dedicated card.

Before I reformatted my machine, I remember running quake 3 at 125fps in Vista, with the graphic drivers off the HP website (The laptop is a DV2310CA).

I reformatted, put on a Vista and XP partition.

On the Vista partition, I had Quake 3 at 125fps with the drivers off the website. Everything was fine, so the next day, I booted it up, and now Quake won't run at all. (Quake 3 has encountered an error and must close).

Now, on the XP parition, I've been using different drivers, since they don't have XP drivers on the HP website.

I tried these - http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=12366

And I tried the 97.02 drivers (The same as my desktop)

But, no matter what, I don't get 125 constant, I get 40-80, give or take. Sometime I hit 100.

I tried setting the affinity, didn't work.

It is an AMD dual core, so maybe I need to try the dual core patch/fix?

Any ideas on either getting it to work on XP or Vista?

IE 3.0 Scroll Problem (15 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 18:06 CDT, 24 June 2008 - iMsg
I recently purchased a IE 3.0, and I really like it.

But, I noticed a small problem with it. I have Plasma as scroll up, and GL as scroll down.

My sensitivity is relatively low, so I move the mouse and lift it a lot.

The main problem I have with it, is that sometimes I'll have a RL, and it will switch to a Plasma or GL on it's own.

I know it has something to do with the mouse wheel, but I don't know how to fix it.

Last resort would be putting binds on keyboard, but, anyone know of a solution to this problem?

Thanks!

America Support from ESL and CB? (13 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 15:55 CDT, 18 June 2008 - iMsg
The two biggest online leagues in Europe are ESL and CB.

In North America, we have CAL and CEVO. Now, CEVO is doing great, CAL, not so much. CEVO is doing well with CS and COD4. TF2 is growing, AA is dying (I think?)

The main point I want to make, is the biggest online leagues right now are ESL and Clanbase. Clanbase has UT and Quake, which a lot of us like.

It feels like North America is seriously lacking from ANY support for Quake and UT. FGL just opened up recently, but I haven't heard any big updates on it recently.

I live in Canada, close enough to ping 30 to Chicago. I tried looking for online leagues for North America, and there is nothing. Absolutely nothing. It's no wondering our community is dying, there's no competition. There's barely any LAN events, and zero online.

I just want to know peoples opinions on this matter. If a lot of people agree, I would try to pursue these leagues to support North America. I would try Clanbase first, because they do Quake and UT.

Maybe start a completely new leagues? Deathmatch isn't going to be dead anytime soon. We have ESWC this year, and AGP tour next year, covering Quake 3, Quake 4, Warsow, and UT3.

It would be amazing if an online league were to support these games for North America, so we could get weekly practice, have some fun tournaments, etc. Even monthly matches would be fine, at least we would have something.

Thank you.

QuakeLive: Give It A Break? (38 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 09:44 CDT, 14 June 2008 - iMsg
I mean, really, it's not THAT bad.

For competition, yes, it's no where near Quake 3 CPMA, in a lot of things. If anything, the only advantage to QL is the fact that it's free. But, I want to say two things.

One, it's early, and beta. Lots of bugs, lots of features not included. It might take a while, but, we should have a lot better game in a couple months, let alone a full year.

The second thing is that people have told me, and also I remember reading in an interview somewhere, that QuakeLive will allow for mods to be made and used with QuakeLive. So, I really don't see how a ProMode for QuakLive WON'T be made.

Lets think about tournaments with Quake 3. This year, we were VERY lucky to have ESWC use Quake 3, and next year, we might not be that lucky.

Lets say QuakeLive didn't exist. A lot of tournaments next year wouldn't use Quake 3, and after that, we'd be waiting for Quake 5. Not only would that take two years, but then we have to wait a year for the game to be playable, assuming the situation is like Quake 4, which is probably won't. Maybe half a year to get a promode for it.

By the time all that happens, I can't see tournaments going BACK to 1v1 after a long wait of nothing.

But, we have QuakeLive. Next year, we might see a final release to a game. A game that's close to Quake 3 (Not close to a competitive version) and a game that's completely free, which will bring in more players.

My point is, QuakeLive at this state, is decent. It's not amazing, but that will take time. QuakeLive is almost keeping Quake 3 going.

At this point, QuakeLive would be terrible for competitively play. But, give it some time, I'm sure it will get a lot better, and before you know it, we'll have a decent ProMode for it, and it might be ready for competitive play in 2009.

Worst case scenario for AGP tour, is going back to Quake 3.

GameRiot Ditches E-Sports (No comments)

That's right.

Fuck you Gameriot.

If you go to the Gameriot website now, it shows you two options, WoW, or SC.

http://www.gameriot.com

Are you serious? Before, the site was decent, a lot of user content, it was nice. Sure, there was a lot of WoW shit, but you can overlook that. There was some good Quake articles on there, even Smash Bros Brawl writers contributed, UT'ers, and other gamers.

But now? They ditch e-sports, and focus only on the two games.

Fuck GameRiot.

Another site goes the way of big corporate idiots.

Maybe I'm being too harsh, but I mean, why?

Sound Issues with X-FI Gamer Card (17 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 01:55 CDT, 6 June 2008 - iMsg
Alright, so I'm having some sound problems with quake 3.

Sometimes during games (mostly 1v1) I hear crackling with LG or RG. If I pull out an LG, and my opponent is near, or I'm going up stairs, it makes this crackling sound, or something similar. Same situation with the RG.

I have an Asus motherboard, X-FI Extreme Gamer Card, and the drivers are 5.12.6.1186.

I try other drivers, but they either give me a BSOD, don't allow me to boot, or, just suck overall.

Now, on top of that, it seems that I think that sounds aren't happening at ALL. In certain cases, it feels that I should of heard my opponent hit a jump pad, but I didn't. I don't know if it's because it's VQ3, or some other game setting.

I'm using the original Quake 3.exe, and CPMA 1.46.

Anyone else have a similar problem?

Solutions?

Thanks =D

Tournament Problem With Mouse (11 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 13:06 CDT, 4 June 2008 - iMsg
Alright, I've been through quite a few mice, but, I'm trying to 'settle down' with one. (Scroll down for problem relating to tournaments)

For the past year, I've used the Logitech G3 with Steelseries qck+. It's been great, but, over the course of the year, I've held the mouse differently. Before, I use to hold it with my fingertrips, like a claw, but now I like the back of the mouse to be hitting my palm. I aim only with wrists/arm now.

My sensitivity is relatively slow. I use 450hz, about 1.9 sens in game. I'd say roughly 20-25cm / 180 turn.

So, I thought I'd get a new mouse to fit the way I hold it. I've tried the G5, Microsoft Laser 6000, mx518, and some other one, and I didn't like those.

My two recent 'tests' have been the Microsoft IE 3.0, and the Deathadder. The Microsoft IE 3.0 is okay. The software is nothing great, the feet on it are kind of crap too, but the shape and optical laser are nice.

I just got the Deathadder yesterday, and it's nice. The software is absolutely perfect, the shape is nice, the feet are TOO SMOOTH (I know, sounds weird, hopefully I get used to it) but the grip is my only issue. I find myself constantly re-gripping it during a game. The sides of it are slippery, and the top doesn't really hit my palm.

So, I'd LIKE to maybe consider the 3.0 again, but there's a problem.

The IE 3.0 out of the box had negative mouse acceleration. Now, the fix for this was to overclock the polling rate of the USB ports to 500hz, and it did work, the mouse is fine now.

My only issue with that is tournaments. I know tournaments won't allow you to adjust it, EXCEPT if it's in the mouse software.

So, right now (I plan on going to Qcon and ESWC Canada) the IE 3.0 is useless to me. I don't want to bring a mouse that might risk me playing.

The Deathadder on the otherhand, you can adjust polling rate in the software, so for tournaments, I'll have ZERO problems with it.

Just wondering what you guys thought of what I should do. Just stick with the deathadder? Maybe go back to the G3, or risk it with the IE 3.0.

Thanks!

Update: Quake History Timeline! (20 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 17:14 CDT, 29 May 2008 - iMsg
ITS BACK

http://quaketimeline.gillz.ca

(Scroll down to comments for any updates from me, they will be posted as comments)

First off, for people wondering, the original creator of this can no longer update the site, as seen here.

So, i took it into my hands to re-create it, and update it. I got a nice layout for the site, put in all the information on the previous site, and made it look a bit better.

I hope you enjoy this! Please email/comment for suggestions on the site, therealgillz AT gmail.com

Now, there's a few technical problems I ran into.

First off, I created all the links on the site as 'pages'. Now, the downside to that, is I cannot add tags to 'pages', wordpress decided so, it's out of my control. My original method, was to have each tournament as an individual post, and have tags to it. For example, lets say WSVG 06 finals. I would have the tags as WSVG, 2006, and all the players names, as well as the games name (Quake 4). This way, someone can do a search for a tag, lets say, 'fojji', and see all the tournaments he has placed in, or '2006', and see all the tournaments that happened in 2006. I'm in the process of figuring out how I'm going to implement it, I'm not sure right now.

Secondly, more information. I'm having a hard time finding it, any help would be awesome. The MAIN one I want to focus on is WSVG 07 circuit. Also, I need more players, new ones, such as Gellehsak, Rapha, etc.

Now, there is some formatting errors on the site, but I'm working on that as I type this.

If you have any ideas/suggestions, please tell me them.

Thanks!

Know Issues: Bullet formatting for Year for Q1 and Q2 pages are screwed up, trying to fix it at the moment.

DON'T INSTALL SP3 FOR WINDOWS XP!!!!! (25 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 18:07 CDT, 21 May 2008 - iMsg
Don't! (This is for AMD users running XP)

Okay, so my system is an AMD dual core system, and I guess I had automatic updates turned on, so during the night, SP3 downloaded and installed its self. In the morning, it was running a bit slow, so I restarted it.

WINDOWS CANNOT LOCATE
<system root>/windows/system32/hal.dll

Now, hal.dll is a dll file which has a record of all your hardware, so it's not a file you can copy and paste back into the folder in DOS.

So, I figure I can boot into the recovery console, and go from there. I put in the XP CD, go into the recovery console, and none of the commands are working. It tells me it can't find the windows directory, can't log in, nothing.

I boot up the XP CD again, and go to the screen where you install windows. It tells me

C: - UNPARTITIONED - 131934MB

Two problems. One, where the fuck did my C partition go, and two, why does it say 131GB. My hard drive is a 250gig.

I booted one of my CD's from work, which has a ton of partitioning tools, recovery programs, all based in dos.

With those programs, they could see the C drive, and all the contents. So my files were fine, but none of the partition programs could really do anything about it.

I brought the HDD over to my friends house. Windows saw it fine, and I copied over all my stuff.

Brought it home, tried to fix it a bit more, then just repartitioned it, formatted it, and installed XP back on.

Now, you might say that maybe I installed something wrong, but that's not the case. Three of my teachers had the exact same problem, and 10 of my friends got fucked over the same way.

So, if you're thinking about installing SP3, either don't do it (Assuming you're under an AMD processor) or wait a bit for a fix to come out.

Ads On Website With Sound (12 comments)

The ads before never ever bothered me, until now.

I find it EXTREMELY annoying when I mouse over to click a link, when I hear "SAY SOMETHING....WHAAT? SAY SOMETHING...WHAAAT?"

Flashing ads that cause epilepsy is fine by me, but ANY ads with sound in them, are completely annoying and unnecessary.

I really hope you change it, or tell your advertising website to change the flash files for that ad, please, anything!

Thank you for taking my request =D

So I went to a HALO lan... (101 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 01:26 CDT, 19 May 2008 - iMsg
It was an accident, I swear.

I was at my girlfriends house, and I was about to leave, when her brother and his friend, who is also my friend, said they were going to his house to chill for a bit and play games, so I tagged along (Yes, my girlfriend is my best friends sister, I heard enough about it from everyone else)

So in the car, they tell me 5 more people are coming over, and everyone is playing Halo. Since I'm a very nice person, I said okay, instead of listening to my head saying "GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE CAR"

So the 'halo' players show up, a few of them I know, a few of them I don't. They had two 360's, that they were going to link together and do a LAN on two TV's.

PROBLEM #1: ITS HALO

I honestly think this game was designed for 'younger' people. Sure, you need to get used to the controls, but, come on. The game mechanics are absolutely childish. No advanced movement, gravity is almost 0, ASSIST AIM WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SHIT, low fov, no binds for weapons, etc, etc. When you compare it to something like Quake, it's obvious you raise kids on Halo, then when they hit the teen ages, you throw them on a PC.

PROBLEM #2: HALO PLAYERS BEING HALO PLAYERS

Kind of like when black people dress like idiots and rob other people...

A couple of the halo players there were just complete assholes, thinking they were the greatest player in the world, taunting, insulting, etc. "HEY YOU LIKE THAT ROCKET? YEAH I BET YOU DO".

I was explaning to one of my friends about how I bought a new CRT, because LCD's for competitive Quake just don't cut it, and two of them had the nerve to call me an idiot for getting a CRT. I told them "Most LCD's on average have 20-50ms of input lag".

One of them responded "No, you're an idiot, I have an LCD monitor that's 2ms". I just stopped talking (Not because he was right, but because I didn't feel like explaining for 10 minutes how a CRT works, how an LCD works, and explaining advertising technique from businesses, and so on)

PROBLEM #3: ....ITS FUCKING HALO!!!

I just can't play it...I feel so bored mentally. Halo is really no different then Counter Strike, except CS takes more skill then Halo in my honest opinion (If you're talking about playing on consoles)

So anyway, I'm never doing that again. Please, I'll roadtrip for 10 hours to go LAN with PC's then play that shit again.

Why Xerp Now? (100 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 13:21 CDT, 16 May 2008 - iMsg
I casually browsed ESR for a while now, reading journals and forums, and comments for front page news stuff.

But, it's only been the past two months or so I've seen a everyone make a big deal about Xerp.

I'm not going to go on about why I think it should/shouldn't be allowed, but why now?

I read the changelog for 1.45 and 1.46, and I think for 1.44, and I didn't see anything about xerp.

So, has xerp been in CPMA this whole time, but we've never payed attention to it?

Or was it quietly added into CPMA in a recent release?

And if it was here the entire time, why did it take this long to find out about it?

A new channel (#Q3TDM) has been created on Quakenet, and over the course of a few days, it has hit 60+ people. It now has a running echbot, where you can add to play pugs for 2v2 and 4v4. This is mainly a North American channel, made due to the lack of team play channels for VQ3 Quake 3.

If you would like to watch, or better yet, join in on this event please join #q3tdm on Quakenet by clicking here.

So please help a growing community by joining in and playing!

Also, this weekend we will see the first small tournament run by #q3tdm, a 2v2 tournament. The map list will be pro-q3dm6, q3dm7, ztn3dm. This is a tournament without any prizes, just for fun, and to see how well it will run.

Quakeworld Movement in TF2? (3 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 09:02 CDT, 4 May 2008 - iMsg
So I got into Quakeworld the past month or so, and I enjoy it a lot, it's fun and fast, I really like it. It took me a day to figure out the movement, but I really like the movement too. The air control should be in every game like Quake. (I think).

Anyway, I was playing TF2, and I was playing on some big huge custom map, so I could run around for a bit. Because I had just played Quakeworld, that movement was stuck in my head, so I tried it out.

It works.

Now, first off, I was a scout. Secondly, it was difficult to do, because if you jump too early, you do a double jump, and it cancels the velocity. But, if you move just like you would in Quakeworld, it actually works.

Now, I don't think it's really an advantage or anything. I'm sure just running without jumping will get you there faster, but I thought it was kind of cool that you could use the movement in TF2.

Firstly, I'm not saying I agree with anything that is said here.

Now, I think what this guy is doing takes a large amount of courage, and so far, he's proven himself to be an intelligent person, with clear facts, good arguments, and so on.

It's hilarious, that through all the voice mails that he has received, not one woman has argued properly. They always call him a fag, or a douche, or an idiot.

Once again, his views do not exactly reflect mine, but, I thought you might enjoy this, since it IS humorous, and entertaining.

Quake 4 Movie Help! Please! (6 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 03:23 CDT, 14 April 2008 - iMsg
Hopefully someone can help!

So, with some free time on my hands, I want to do a short quake 4 movie, but that's as much as I'm saying right now.

Anyway, I see a number of programs that people use, and someone told me that most people don't use Fraps to record Quake 4.

I was informed that there was a 'config' that just records tons of screenshots, then you compile them in a video program.

Is this true?

I just need some guidance on this. What programs to record, compression, etc. I know which ones to use (I think), but I want to make sure it still compresses properly, and looks great, etc etc.

Any help would be awesome =D

I Got My CRT!!! (31 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 00:32 CDT, 12 April 2008 - iMsg
Finally!

I got an awesome deal on eBay. I paid 2$ for the monitor, but unfortunately, I paid $90+ for shipping.

Samsung Syncmaster 997DF

It got here, and I was happy it was working at all! 2$ Monitors sound...iffy.

Anyway, I ran Quake 3, and was so happy. No more blur, no more delay, nothing!

And that's when I was running it at 85 hz. I changed the refresh rate of Quake 3 to 120HZ, on 800x600, and, oh my god.

It has to be the smoothest thing I've EVER experienced on a computer, ever. It's so smooth, no tearing, nothing. It's such a joy to play a game, so incredibly smooth.

Anyway, here's a picture of my setup now.

Long Live CRT's!!!

I Have A Stalker, The CRT Story. (15 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 16:57 CDT, 31 March 2008 - iMsg
So I didn't get my CRT, but now I have a stalker!

He had given us one address, we got lost trying to find it, and when we found it, it was an apartment. He didn't give us a phone number or apartment number. We waited there for an hour, then left.

If you didn't read my other journal, I had found a used 17" Samsung CRT, so I was going to purchase it.

6:15 PM jm: dude
6:16 PM me: Hey
Sorry about what happened
We got lost when we got there
and we arrived at around 5PM
6:17 PM jm: uhh pay phone?
6:20 PM me: We looked around, but we couldn't find anything, we got there late, so we thought you left or something, so, we waited for about a half an hour downstairs, then left. You didn't give us a phone number either.
6:22 PM jm: did u come by car?
me: no we took the bus
and walked
6:23 PM jm: i think i saw u
was ur friend wearing a hat?
me: yes
jm: so hows centennial

(NOTE: it took me two minutes to reply, as me and my friend discussed how fucking creepy that last comment was)

6:25 PM me: how do you know that?
jm: i'm a genius
6:26 PM i heard u have a business that specializes on computer repair
6:28 PM me: Where did you obtain that information?
6:29 PM jm: dont worry dude
i'm not a hacker
me: Well then where did you get that information from.
6:30 PM jm: anyways do u still have cathode ray tubes inside ur pc
6:35 PM me: I never had any cathodes inside my PC.
jm: cool
6:36 PM i'm playing
me: ?
But where did you find this information?
6:38 PM jm: dont worry man
continue with ur life
6:39 PM forget about the monitor dude
just get a LCD
CRTs are heavy and gay
6:40 PM me: So do you even have the monitor?
Or did one of your friends at York University get it?
6:41 PM jm: lol
6:42 PM good facebooking
me: Well, two people can play that game.
jm: nope
i only saw ur facebook pics
in ur albums
but yeah
i have the monitor

At that point, I blocked him.

What a fucking creepy mother fucker.

ZOMG IM GETTING A CRT <3 (45 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 14:43 CDT, 26 March 2008 - iMsg
Finally!

After using this LG LCD (8ms) I'm completely fed up with LCD's. The input lag is so bad, the more I used the LCD, the more I found it out. It's extremely noticable in Quake, because of all the bring colours.

So, I decided to do the right thing. I went to some local classified sites, and found a nice Samsung CRT (753?). It's used, but I don't care. LCD's have so much lag input, I'm tired of it.

Even though it's 8ms, that's not the average response time for my LCD. The average, if you research it, is around 20-30. The reason they say 8ms, is because when they do benchmarks on it, if it ever drops to 8ms, they will rate it as that. Oh, and fuck 60hz. And blur. Lots of blur. Yuck.

So yes, I'm getting a nice Samsung CRT. The best part? $20!

=D
