The Quakeworld community has once again been spoiled by the hard working
ezQuake crew who have another
huge changelog for us to drool over. As i wrote in the
beta news two months ago the most significant additions are mouse driven menus, better QTV/ezTV support, HUD editor and that a load of settings that only could be set in the console before have been moved to the options menu. This, and a lot of other stuff should make Quakeworld easier to setup than before. The ezQuake developers sure have been busy as you can read from the snippet below.
It took longer then usual to make ezQuake ready for next stable release, but the time we needed was turned into an appropriate amount of work. We have put lots of efforts into developing, testing, and accepting suggestions. In April we managed to get into 50 most active projects on SourceForge.net, which hosts about 150 000 projects. Lots of people from QuakWorld community helped us with testing and adjusting features we made and we are grateful for this.
This release aims on making QuakeWorld easier to start, configure and play. We have created completely new mouse navigated rich menus which allow you to setup everything you will ever need for comfortable game experience. For every setting there’s a detailed description in the help box on the bottom of the screen. The way how the renderer and other client modules are initialized has been reworked, which allows us to get rid of all command-line options, also you can finally change video settings on-the-fly in OpenGL version.
To get a solid Quakeworld setup you should use this new ezQuake version along with the
fQuake package. Install fQuake, add pak1.pak from your original Quake CD and then install the new ezQuake version on top of everything. If you already got a good Quakeworld install, then just make sure to fetch the new ezQuake version as it will totally rock your socks off.

Ever since the second movie in the Dag & Def Extreme series was released, people have been longing for a third movie on the very same theme. For those of you who aren't familiar with the series i can tell you that it features stunning frags and really awesome tricks made by the dynamic duo
Dag and
Def.
Having been "a work five years in planning", the third part is finally here and it seems like it lives up to the massive hype created in the community. The bits and pieces of this action packed movie have been put together with brilliant editing skills by
Pez and it has already received judgements like "The best QW movie I have ever seen". While remembering the last big QW movie, Kyu One, that says quite a lot.
The length of the movie is approximately 20 minutes and the size of it is fairly heavy. It comes in two flavours, a light weight version on 779Mb and a top notch quality version on 1,5Gb. It is a must download despite the file size though as you really don't want to miss this!
- Movie File (Medium Quality 768*432) 779MB
- Movie File (High Quality 1024*576) 1500MB
- Movie File (Torrent High Quality 1024*576) 1500MB

I was so certain it was going to a fourth map. Why, oh WHY, didn't cMF slowspawn? Someone said it was 11 frags with 40 secs left, but even then DAG had to have like ultimate luck to pull it off! IT SHOULDN'T BE POSSIBLE!
Anyway, it was a very successful event with ~900 specs on streams + Qizmo cams. What i want now is QTV and semi regular shows like this. I believe the streams are a very good way to bring new, fresh souls into the world of Quake.
NQR Final > CPL Italy!?
I certainly think so.
QW is the past and the future. All angels know that.
fQuake is a first step in the right direction,
www.quakeworld.nu/forum is a second and
#qwhelp is a third.

Today a new initiative in the QW scene was taken - to gather all spanish Quakers in a channel called #qw.es on Quakenet IRC. There aren't very many known spanish quakerworld players today and the goal is to get more spanish people to play (or at least try) the game.
Feel free to join the channel and have a chat. :)

The Quakeworld movie director
Nylon has finally released his highly anticipated Quakeworld promotion movie
Kyu One. The community has been longing for this movie as the trailer have looked very promising and from a brief look, the movie seems to live up to the expectations. The content of this piece of QW action is both frags and hot moves made by some of the most well known players today.
An interesting thing with this movie is that it shows off a new tool within QW movie making;
Camquake. This software has been developed by
Jogi to make life easier for movie makers as well as open up for new flashy effects, primarily by setting up routes for the camera to follow in a smooth motion. This is something you will notice throughout the whole movie.
Nylon has also entered the
Creative Movies $2000 Movie Contest with this fresh piece of art. He has reached
the grand final in the competition, in which he is competing against eleven other movies from various games for the prize purse. If you liked this movie, then make sure the author benefits from it by giving the movie an appropriate rating!
The movie weighs in at 159Mb and can be downloaded from the links below.
- Movie File - Download (Kyu One) 159MB
- Movie File - Stream (Kyu One) 159MB

On the swedish site FZ they're celebrating their 10 year anniversary with a bit of a Quakeworld special. Other than having launched a few Quakeworld servers and having something of a Quake week they've interviewed some oldschool players back from the days. The most well known of the interviewees is DOOMer, who still seems to hold QW close to his heart. The interview is (unfortunately) in swedish so all swedes should check it out.

Next big RTS (used in tournaments, played by gazillions) or just a dry overhyped creation? There's an open beta over at fileplanet, all you have to do is sign up (not for a paid subscription, do the free ones!), get a key and try it out. Personally i think/hope it will rock. We'll see in ~february. :)

At last the dates for the fourth season of
European Quake League since the summer break has been set. Other games seems to have a bit of activity during the summer but the Quakeworld scene hits quite a low at that time as most pla
yers wants to take a break and recharge their QW batteries with beer, booze and rock'n'roll for a while. The EQL4 registration starts on the 4th of september and the league actually kicks off on the 18th of september. We will hopefully have quite a few new neat features on the site if they can be finished in time for the 4th season of the league. :)
Will be interesting to see what the QW scene will be like this autumn. Will everyone be back and will the tournaments be as action packed as they were three or four months ago? You always ask yourself that when it comes to Quakeworld but i think that the scene itself grabbed pent quite a while ago. It's invulnerable even if it's not the biggest there is - the core of the scene will always be there.
Make sure you visit the
Quakeworld.nu forum if you want to get into the scene and start gibbing for real.

...is that it has a very dedicated community that strives to improve the game on the tech side of things. The latest example is the
ezQuake radar HUD item which looks very nice. Sure, i've heard that games like CS etc already have these things but anyway, this is just an example. :)

The NQR 4on4 ladder has recently been restarted and will be up during the summer. Gather some friends and experience the cadillac of QW - 4on4!
"There's no way in hell i'm gonna spend my summer on E1M2, DM3 and DM2 only!"
- The ladder includes more maps than the classic big three. Check
rules page for complete list. With
Qw4ever running during the summer more clans will also want to play even more custom maps to get in shape.
"So...now i only have to go out and buy Quake and spend the whole summer with setting things up in QW and i'll probably be ready in time for next summer..."
-
fQuake (note: not eQuake) is all you need. It's based off of the Shareware version but includes a modern client so it's a nice setup anyway. It includes everything you need to play some competitive QW (like brightskins, loc files, team messages, proper config etc).
"Okey, you convinced me, i'm up for it! I don't got any teammates though as they're all busy with <insert game here> :("
- You could try finding a clan in the
Quakeworld.nui transfer forum where you state your experience, nationality etc and you may get a reply by a clan with nice lads in it who are willing to guide a new player.
Go register on the 4on4 ladder and visit us in #Quakeworld on Quakenet if you got any questions or just want to chill with the good guys. :)

Yesterday the clock reached 20.00 CET and it was time for my Duelmania game versus
Toi. Fortunately for me everything went well. It was
a quite comfortable 2-0 win on Aerowalk (28-2) and DM6 (30-7).
Toi had some ping disadvantage though, but proved to be a real nice sportsman. My next opponent in winners bracket is
Y whom i've never heard of before. I got the higher seed but i wouldn't be surprised if the crew has got the wrong idea about me. ;)
Besides Duelmania and 1on1 i also play 4on4 in the clan Veterans that consists of old members from the old clan Hellfire. As we got relegated last season due to some inactivity and disorganization in the league, we now strive to win
division 3 and there has been few problems so far. Yesterday
we played Clan Metally Troopers and even without rising star
Mille we managed to win DM2 at first. That was one really tight map where CMT early took the lead by about 50 frags or so, then i managed to get hold of Quad and the other guys secured tele/water and we were back in the game. Made a real nice quadrun and a sequence at low-rl that i'm very satisfied with. :) E1M2 was our choice of map and even though it was a bit uncertain in the beginning, we locked the map and never looked back when it was roughly 5 minutes left. Map ended with like a 100 frags advantage for us.
On sunday 21.00 CET we are going to face
Brutality which will be a hard nut to crack. Now i'm off to school, don't forget to check out
the new QW forum!

I felt i needed to write something about Duelmania as some kind of follow up on the newspost i made here. If you haven't noticed, the interest in the tournament has been massive and there are a
256 player bracket up at the
official site. As you can see,
yours truly are to challenge some german guy called Toi. I haven't even heard of this player before and it will be interesting to see if it's a totally new player or some german dark horse of QW. :P
Also if you haven't noticed,
European Quake League is coming along just fine and Sassa recently fixed a
new forum to replace the old QW.nu forum that got killed by evil hackers. Anyway, it seems like this will be another good year in the world of Quake and i hope some of you try this old beauty even if you're more into the new games on the market. :)
Cheers.

Some days ago i watched the PK final between Fatality and Voo. While the game was fast paced and one map reminded me a bit about DM6 ("The Dark Zone"), the one with a teleporter in a quite big middle room, it really didn't give the impression of being really skillful. I was surprised about how the players could move very fast in one direction and straight after move just as fast backwards. Sure it's fast, but if it doesn't require any special technique, then it's just annoying.
Yesterday i decided to watch some of the top notch QW players battle it out in a mixed 4on4 against some semi good team. While i sat there watching these players own it up i suddenly realized why i play this game. Compared to the painkiller matches between Voo and Fatality, the QW action was so much more...solid. It really takes some skill to become such a master of this game like those guys are. While they almost always makes the right decisions, they can move around the level in the most spectacular ways, while timing items to perfection and making the most out of every situation.
I can't see why a game like this can't be featured in The CPL. If games like Starcraft and CS can, then why not Quakeworld? This was just some random rant, feel very free to comment though and don't forget that there is a
Quakeworld forum on this site! :)
