I personally thought silencep was exceptional in every game and mikes is still awesome!

I've tried it when things are definately being broadcast and not, using the search bit for various tags such as leveluptv lvluptv etc and can't seem to even find the channel.

Just wanted to draw everyone's attention to this excellent site, most people probably already know about it but I only just stumbled across it so figured some might not and it's such a good site it's worth mentioning anyway.

Lists of QL matches with a lot of info for each, but the main draw for me is the youtubed videos for every game listed. I prefer to watch the matches this way now and it also allows me to watch on all of the different devices I have.

iPad 2 (13 comments)

So I went against pretty much everyones advice and purchased an iPad 2. And I love it, the main gripe I had with them was the missing flash but this hasnt seemed to be a problem at all. I did look at other tablets in the shop, the main one being the asus transformer but none could match the build quality or speed of the iPad.
Mainly using it for browsing but there's some excellent games on the app store.

I always hated apple products due to being stuck in iTunes but maybe this is me becoming more casual in my computing like my gaming has (sold pc, just rent console games now). I've even stopped my usenet account now and use the money to pay for lovefilm to rent blu-ray and console games! Although I may jailbreak it.

Anyway... Quality piece of kit which isn't any more expensive than the android tablets. £399 for 16gb wifi as apposed to £380 for the transformer and £450 for the xoom.

Just need lvlup to work please :)

Mac OS on laptop? (1 comment)
Posted by skint @ 12:45 CDT, 26 May 2011 - iMsg
My housemate has just picked up a HP DV7-4020sa laptop in a PCworld auction for a bargain price. He is a MAC user though, how easy is it to install snowleopard onto it? its an AMD cpu which briefly skimming seems a bit harder to install on than intel?

if someone could give me some pointers would be much appreciated. He`s going to sell it if we cant make it a full mac os.

thinking about swapping my laptop for an ipad 2, i only use my laptop for the internet and sometimes watching movies. the main thing that bothers me is the lack of flash and i do tend to download movies, although i get very few nowadays so renting/streaming wouldnt be that bad.

pros and cons please!?

Streaming Video PC to PC (3 comments)
Posted by skint @ 13:52 CDT, 25 April 2011 - iMsg
So in my house between me and house mate we have a couple of media servers running which is fine to stream stuff to any number of our devices such as mobile phones, psp, ps3, abox360, appleTV and DLNA TV. But what i want to do is be able to watch the videos from his Vuze on my laptop, Vuze shows up on all the devices listed but i cant find a program to just run and list the servers we have.
thought there would be an easy way like there is on everything else in the house but it seems not.

So does anyone know any programs or methods for this to work?

watching all these tournaments recently has really made me want to start playing again but my netbook although it will run QL isnt really adequate so ive been looking through ebay at bits to build a cheap and small (limited room) pc and im just wondering what kind of requirements does it need for solid 125fps? yes ive been playing quake for years and years but QL seems to have slightly different requirements.

at the mo im looking at building a system using a micro atx mobo, pentium 4 cpu 3ghz ish, 2gb ram and something like a 8600gt gfx card. would this be enough or would i need to go for c2d cpu?
also looking at buying a 2nd hand viewsonic vx922.

thoughts please!

edit:

So i have started buying some bits:

Collecting DOOM & Quake stuff (7 comments)
Posted by skint @ 08:32 CST, 13 February 2011 - iMsg
Ive been wanting to start a collection of 'something' for a while, i was thinking about various consoles to collect for such as PC-Engine or 3DO etc but then i thought well my favourite games of all time are the DOOM and Quake games so ive decided to start collecting as much as i can (and can afford)

already gone a bit mad on ebay and bought DOOM for the 32X (jap and usa versions) also for the PSX (pal and jap) saturn (pal) N64 (usa and pal) 3DO (pal) and then Quake on Dreamcast, Saturn, Xbox and Xbox360. Picked up UMD and DVD of Doom the movie (not seen it, presume its shit)

Will keep checking ebay for all the usual items that are cheap and then start getting the more expensive stuff such as big box versions of DOOM on various platforms and find a copy of Quake 3 on linux which came in a metal case.

Anyone know if there was audio cds of the doom and quake soundtracks? seen a quake one but no doom ones.

Oh and the Reaper miniatures but they are really rare and cost a fortune... theres a couple on ebay at the mo with boxed ones going for £80 =(

anyone got any decent doom or quake merchandise they want to sell???

QTV (gtv) (50 comments)
Posted by skint @ 15:29 CST, 10 February 2011 - iMsg
Do we even need it anymore?

I dont think we do anymore, streaming has come a long way in the past couple of years and now with streams such as own3d.tv there is just no need for a GTV. High quality streams that work pretty much flawlessly and you dont even need the game. Plus theres the added bonus of commentators and the ability for ads to bring in revenue for the broadcasting teams, granted the commentators can be a bit hit and miss depending on which styles you like but it adds to the whole experience. Also being able to have the good old GTV chat on streams such as TheBeard.

At the start of QL i hated the idea of no GTV which was mainly due to the poor streams that were coming out, but now i enjoy the many streams that are available and also a healthy archive of VODs over the various sites. Its been many many months since downloading and watching a demo.

dunno why i posted this but its out of my system now.

Console FPS (10 comments)
Posted by skint @ 07:48 CST, 6 February 2011 - iMsg
Finally a control method that works well!

Last night i downloaded a multiplayer demo of Killzone 3 which supports the Playstation Move controller. You hold a normal Playstation 3 controller in one hand using the left analog stick to move forwards and strafe, with L2 being the scope view, L1 for grenades and the D-pad for changing weapons. Then the move controller in the other hand with X as reload, T for fire and i cant remember what the others do. You can also use the Navigation controller accessory instead of the ps3 pad and its something I will buy.

I'm still getting used to it but so far find it a very nice alternative to mouse+keyboard combo and obviously far more accurate than just using a controller. As you move the gun to the edge of the screen you start to rotate, it kind of moves like how Goldeneye worked on the n64 with the gun moving freely on your screen.

Theres a big article about it with 5 videos up on Kotaku.com to give you an idea of how it works here.

Its still not as good as mouse and keyboard but far better than just using a controller. Hopefully alot more FPS games on the ps3 will have this option. Anyone else tried it?

Playstation 3 hacked (4 comments)
Posted by skint @ 11:16 CST, 23 January 2011 - iMsg
So whilst bored this weekend i went ahead and put some custom firmware on my PS3, using 'Kweam CFW 3.55' it took all of 5 minutes. installed SNES, Mega Drive and Final Burn Next emulators which all work perfectly and setup an FTP server on the PS3 so its easier to transfer stuff to the consoles HDD.
Also put MultiMan on which basically plays 'backups' and played a copy of the NBA Jam straight from a usb flash drive, then also copied it to the HDD after.
There also a util called 'Wipe History' which wipes everything that they reckon sony will be looking for, but who knows if this will work. Im not too bothered as custom firmware will open up the PS3 to alot more usefull stuff than i get from PSN.

Brief History of Video Games (1 comment)

As he travels around the world talking to some real legends such as nolan bushnell and shigeru miyamoto and playing them at the games that they were famous for and shaped video gaming.

Its in 6 parts, ill embed the first:

My favourite part is when he interviews the guy who made 'Manic Miner' - Matthew Smith.

Older game ports for new systems (16 comments)
Posted by skint @ 13:55 CST, 1 January 2011 - iMsg
im looking for ports for old games to run on windows 7 etc. dosbox is ok but can be a pain to set up sometimes and run right so i want to get a list of ports for any game at all. could either be a fan made project with new assets or a port that uses the original game data.

ill get the ball rolling:

http://swars.vexillium.org/ - Syndicate Wars port that works flawlessly, need the original files.

http://blog.1amstudios.com/ - Carmageddon port or atleast it was until the guy got a cease and desist order. so now its called OpenC1 which has legal assets created by the community, still in early stages. it will run the carmageddon demo if youuse that data folder, ive also tried it with the carmageddon retail but it crashed.

Which OS? (20 comments)
Posted by skint @ 05:31 CST, 21 November 2010 - iMsg
sorry for boring you all with these posts.

So my OCZ Vertex 2 60gb arrives tomorrow and im not sure which OS to install and use. I do love Ubuntu since switching to it, its fast and easy to use and has a nice software centre, but the fact it struggles with high quality video is a bit disappointing as nowadays I only really use my computer for internet and watching video. So I could use Ubuntu again and just try harder to find a solution if there even is one or maybe try a different distro of linux? What are peoples experiences with other OS's? Also other distros of linux?

Ubuntu video problem (24 comments)
Posted by skint @ 12:27 CST, 19 November 2010 - iMsg
i know theres probably better forums to find this out and i have looked around google but lots of people asking with no answers. never know someone might know this problem here.

So i removed windows completely and installed 'Ubuntu 10.04' now everything works fine apart from high quality video. for instance 720p/1080p mkv's and hd video on youtube are all jerky and getting artefacts on the hd rips ive downloaded. also streams such as lvlup are jerky.
this is on my netbook with the specs being Atom 270/3gb ddr3 ram/ION GPU. 1080p, streams and other high quality video all worked fine in windows xp and windows 7, just having problems since switching to Ubuntu.
i did read in one place that the video decoder with ubuntu is quite slow so this could be a reason, they gave CoreAVC as a solution but wouldnt this only work for my downloaded videos i play in a player and not solve youtube and lvlup etc?

Origin of Russian style. (12 comments)
Posted by skint @ 13:50 CDT, 9 August 2010 - iMsg
reading through some old Russian quake 3 player stuff and found this which explains the origins of the russian style (keyboard on lap) The interview is with Polosatiy.

The Russian team attracted quite some attention by the way they play: Mitsumi mice, keyboards on your legs and screen size reduced to 14" - quite a special sight! What's the story behind this setup?

Hehe. It's pretty funny. The keyboard - in my childhood, I've damaged ligaments on my hand, and that stopped me from playing football (semi-professionally) and tennis. Later, when I started to play computer games, I simply couldn't keep my hands in a normal position for a long time. So I was the first player who played in a such way. So everybody thought that this is what makes me good, and did the same :). The mouse - my first club, where I began to play, was pretty poor and had only Mitsumi mouses installed. So i just got used and played with it. Again, everyone thought that this was my secret to success :). About the screen size - I'll tell you, that Pow3r was playing Q2 with viewsize 60 :), and he did pretty well... So, basically, everyone just got used to smaller monitors.

POLOS IS RULEZ!!1

Retro Consoles (52 comments)
Posted by skint @ 12:39 CST, 20 December 2009 - iMsg
Just wondering if anyone on ESR is interested in retro consoles? either playing the games via the hardware or emulators or maybe collecting the various consoles?
i guess retro consoles would be anything up until the ps2, so would include things like the dreamcast and n64 still.

im looking to buy a new retro console to collect for but not sure which one to go for out of the pc-engine, amiga cd32 and atari jaguar. looking more towards the pc-engine i think.
would go for a neo-geo but the prices are always very high.

yeah so i think im finally there!

lately i seem to only be able to watch romantic comedies and high school comedies, they constitue about 98% of my movie viewing.
i just cant get enough of them, with the latest one being 'I Love You, Beth Cooper' which is a mix of both genres i guess. It also had pretty crappy reviews and apparently not funny. I completly disagree though and found it quite hilarious and cute.

love you xoxoxo

iPhone or HTC Hero or Palm Pre (120 comments)
Posted by skint @ 13:34 CDT, 20 September 2009 - iMsg
my contract is about to end so im looking at getting either a HTC Hero (t-mobile G2 from t-mobile) or an iPhone 3G (not 3Gs).
after reading about them both out of the two i would probably prefer the HTC Hero. the problem is im on o2 at the moment and they dont do the phone so i would have to change to t-mobile. id prefer to stay on o2 =)
im also wanting the phone for free on contract, and definatly not willing to buy either sim free.

is there all that much different between the two in terms of features, they both seem to do sort of the same things?
what are peoples experiences with either phone?

Reminisce (2 comments)
Posted by skint @ 19:37 CDT, 28 August 2009 - iMsg
I am self proclaimed nerd, i love video games, i love movies, i love cars, i love high tech cultures such as japan. i look back to past events past times and think i wish as was there then! watching documentaries about old video games such as 'king of kong' and 'chasing ghosts' and wish i had been about at the start of it all.
i wouldnt have been at the top like the people depitced in the videos but i would have been involved with it all, been a part of it.
and then i look to the future.
As i said i am never going to be at the top in any of these games past or present but then im glad to have been a part of it since. It's all about the fun of the games.
I started playing games in roughly 1987 or so when i think we got the amiga and from then on I've loved every minute of it from the greats on the amiga such as more or less any sensible software game through to syndicate and frontire and then finding consoles such as nes, psx, dreamcast to name but a few. nowadays i still play games from all genres and times dating right back to the original game 'spacewar' right up till various ps3 and xbox 360 games and pc games such as quakelive, gta4 and eventually starcraft 2.
i dont think ill ever stop playing video games and to be honest i hope i never do.
im glad of the time ive spent playing them from the aformentioned amiga and pretty much any game in between then and now.
hopefully in say 10 years time ill be able to look back and say to my kids 'i was there' in terms of the multiplayer boom, however nerdy that makes me. the past 12 years have been the greatest of my video gaming 'career' being a part of the online multiplayer contingent. playing all the games at the start of the great deathmatch scene and looking back with fond memories of the games and people ive played with. starting with quake 1, jumping on a server with guys from school, changing colors so we are the same and adding some small clan tag and then moving onto real clans for tdm, ra3 and cctf. playing online with my clans mainly *TeamFear*, 2DIE4 and CGA and meeting alot of great guys along the way from the few clans ive been in as well as communities.
as i stated earlier ive always been a HUGE fan of video games and whilst ive never been at the top ive always been there and been a part of what i could. Hopefully ill be able to pass this knowledge on and pass on all the great tournaments, games and insight, basically just a part of this amazing culture that ive been able to be a part of!

ill admit im a bit drunk writing this so its not very well written but to be honest it would have been worse if i was sober. when i thought about writing this it made alot more sense and meant alot more but im shit at describing what i meen/feel =)
long live video games and long live nerds!

i suck at them all but still have some fun. dodonpachi, ikaruga and the strikers series are the ones i probably try the most.

my main problem atm is dodging the bullets but i guess once u learn this then should be able to get better at all of them =) dimahoo isnt even that much bullet hell.

UK ISP's (17 comments)
Posted by skint @ 11:39 CDT, 23 July 2009 - iMsg
Which ISP's are people from the UK using atm? id just like to know which ones and how good they are, but only ADSL 'upto 8mb' services as i cant get the faster ADSL or cable here.

looking for a new isp, after moving i left aquiss internet and switched to o2 as they were cheap and i thought it would be fine. after 3 weeks now ive requested my MAC code to transfer to another provider. o2 wasnt too bad for downloading, although dl speeds seemed to be all over the place and evenings and wekeends are a bit hit and miss, whilst latency for playing games was pretty much terrible all the time, and unplayable every evening and weekend.

at the moment im thinking of going back to aquiss, was reasonably priced (providing i do most of my dl through the night) and never had any problems with gaming.

anyone else been watching or following the coverage on various sites?

just been watching the microsoft press conference and theyve been showing off some nice stuff.
the announcement of 'metal gear solid: rising' they also had some new hardware called 'project Natal' which looked quite interesting, it was a body motion controller and they had demos with people painting, boxing etc, kind of like the wii but alot more advanced. it also had a weird demo where u could talk and interact with a character on screen and he would react depending on your tone of voice and facial expressions etc.
they also showed some gameplay for 'halo 3: ODST' which im quite looking forward to playing and annoucing a new halo game called 'halo: reach'

theres also been the anouncement of 'left 4 dead 2' and a special edition monkey island. and sony revealed the 'psp GO' which is looking quite nice, a little bit larger than an iphone and has 16gig storage and will run off digital media only for games movies etc.

the microsoft press conference was pretty good so looking forward to seeing what nintendo and sony show off at theirs in the following days. stuff like 'MAG' 'God of War 3' and 'StarWars: the old republic'
i dont see id software on the exhibitors list unless they will have games on publishers bit (activision?) would like to see some more 'rage'

anyone tried it? ive been playing it a little bit and got to say its pretty cool. playing on the no$gba 2.6 emulator which plays it with a few graphics glitches, if u use this emu u must set 'NDS cartridge backup media' to 'EEPROM 64KBytes' for it to work. going to try it on the ds see if it works with M3 Simply cart.

it takes u back more to the original 2 games with a top down view and retains all the old style gameplay.
well worth getting, personally prefer the top down ones over the 3d sequels

mirrors edge (3 comments)
Posted by skint @ 13:44 CDT, 31 October 2008 - iMsg
the mirrors edge demo is now available on the xbox and ps3.

ive just downloaded it and been playing, i was very skeptical about how the controls would work and the game in general.

it works really well, and u do feel like u have alot of control over your character. the environments are nice and also looks really good. the demo is the same level the original gameplay videos were showing with the addition of a training level at the start.
id like to know how linear the other levels will be though as with this level although there are plenty of obstacles to make different routes on the main path is set out for you.
theres also a race mode which i presume is multiplayer or time trials affair, not able to try it because you need a pre-order code. but these should be good, with people uploading their best times to the leader boards.

think ill probably buy it, just waiting for a few reviews to read first before 100% though.
