Crystal Castles - III (2012) release (10 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 18:58 CST, 10 November 2012 - iMsg
The first album was a bit more noisy and 8bitish, second one gave me an impression they're trying to be a commercial success. Some tracks from that album are still top-notch though.

Third release entitled simply III has a much more witch-house approach allá Tearist, White Ring and the likes.

Some people labled them witch-house even after their first two releases (not sure why, I don't hear it), this one is a nice blend of electronica, 8bit and lofi witch house.

grab it and buy it if you like it.

Fallout 1&2 is patched up and optimized for Windows 7, works like a charm "out of the box".

If you haven't played them yet, you're missing out.
A lot harder than new fallouts, much better atmosphere

Giants: Citizen Kabuto characterized by dry humor is one of my old favorites, check that baby out. Don't forget about evolva or MDK and messiah, All 3 great games.

New Roccat Hiro 3D Supremacy mousepad (6 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 08:29 CDT, 19 October 2012 - iMsg
Hamburg 18. October 2012 – ROCCAT, the German manufacturer of professional gaming accessories, today launched its new high-performance cloth gaming pad – the ROCCAT™ Hiro – 3D Supremacy Surface Gaming Mousepad – the world’s first mousepad to use an advanced new manufacturing process that creates smooth, rounded edges that won’t ever fray, even after extended use. The patented build process creates an inseparable “power bond” between upper and lower surfaces, creating a mousepad of unrivaled durability.

The Hiro also features an entirely new kind of gaming surface: an exclusive vulcanized silicone playing field, with a complex 3D structure, that delivers significantly increased gliding speed and control on both the x and y axis – offering the ultimate command capability during even the most demanding gaming.

"With the Hiro, we are yet again bringing true innovation to gaming," says ROCCAT Founder and CEO, René Korte. "Frayed edges are a thing of the past with this mousepad. And its groundbreaking, one-of-a-kind surface delivers speed and precision that will thrill even the most demanding gamers. We built the Hiro using only the most advanced materials and construction methods – so gamers can rest assured their pad will provide max battle durability and performance, mission after mission.”

[source]

According to the official website, the MSRP is around ~50€

I'd love to test out this silicone coated pad, different sizes wouldn't hurt either. From what I can tell, they're only releasing one size ("OPTIMAL GAMING SIZE of 350 x 250 x 2.5mm – for ideal ergonomics and performance)

Changing single switch on Das Keyboard (23 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 14:29 CDT, 18 October 2012 - iMsg
With the generous help by the guys at overclock.net, I managed with little to no experience to successfully replace the faulty switch on my Das Keyboard.

Here's the infamous cherry blue and its respective components.

And the tools I used (from left to right)

A Russian(?) soldering flux, a REALLY old 100W soldering gun, some solder and a screwdriver (for opening the keyboard up and removing the melted alloy)

I rarely if ever use the scoll lock key, so I was like fuck it, I'll just swap it with the faulty one, maybe a temporary makeshift fix, I'll see where this takes me.

I used the gun and de-soldered the B and C parts, the encircled A part is what caused me some problems - it's trapezoid shaped and doesn't jump out nicely.

I know, I've burnt it like hell, I'm new to this shut up, I'll get it in time.

I used some solder and popped the scrlk switch onto the faulty S switch. Instead of a drop-like shape, I got a spherical masterpiece which I'm incredibly proud of.

And here it is, fully functional (well, minus the scroll key) in all it's glory. It needs a bit of a cleanup though.

The reason why I "documented" this is because I encourage laymen to give this a shot, even if they're not extremely skilled at soldering.

So you've seen 2 wheel bike w/gyroscope (15 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 09:48 CDT, 22 September 2012 - iMsg
How about one wheel?

Production begins January, 2013
MSRP: 4.500$ / 3464 €
**(for reference, the segway MSRP (smallest) is 5,885$)

Imo it has some flaws:
-the battery must be really weak
-On the spec sheet, there's nothing about lithium-ion battery (which grants a lot more mileage and power output)
-not a scooter

**I only mention segway because judging by its speed and usability, it's a lot more closer to your segway than your electric scooter.
It somehow bothers me that it is advertised as a scooter
like... what is this supposed to mean? Tourer bike gear?

Posted by Teen Queen @ 12:37 CDT, 3 September 2012 - iMsg
It all started when I got kinda bored of my wmo. It's a great mouse, no doubt, but I just wanted something else after years of use.

So here's my quick take on it.
I cannot comment on the build quality yet since I've only had it for a short period now, I am however concerned about the cord. It's very thin and I've read several complaints about it. The upside?
Logitech will gladly replace it. Their customer service is pretty decent.

What I really liked (coming from both mx518, wmo and ie 3.0) is the ease of use and plug&play settings.

Just plugging in this bastard without drivers whatsoever will instantly grant you 1000hz and prediction off*
I know setting 500hz via hidusbf isn't a hard and time consuming task, but knowing that I can plug this baby anywhere without fiddling around with too much settings feels great.

I've tried several mouse grips.**
The Claw grip just looked wank, my ring finger barely fit. I didn't like it that much.
Palm grip felt natural and is what I'm currently using.
Fingertip grip felt awkward but apparently some do use it

Weight seems fine but my wmo felt a bit lighter.
Addendum: No, I will not drill holes in it. Forget it.

Skates are same size as mx518 and they feel ok for now, will update when they wear out.
Scroll wheel works ok, it's not the best but has very distinctive "rotations", far better than anything wmo had.

On-the-fly DPI switch is here with standard 400-800-1800-3000 settings, you can fine tune it with drivers if you want something in between 200 and 3000.

So far I'm very satisfied with the purchase.
It's a bit more expensive than your standard wmo, a bit cheaper than your IE 3.0 and a LOT cheaper than anything from steelseries, zowie and similar brand names.
I wasn't able to find a legitimate MSRP, but my guess is ~33€/35$

All in all I'd say go for it if you're looking for a replacement. Can definitely be called mx518's bigger, smarter and more efficient brother.

Here's a few pics:
Box
side
Size comparision with IE 3.0 (don't have other mice at home atm)
Code

*Older version has prediction enabled, newer version doesn't.

New version indicators:
- LZ higher than 133** (mine)
- If it does not have a PID but has a S/N of ANY number then it has no angle snapping
- New ones have a round logitech sticker on the box

**grips may differ depending on the size of your hand and preference

Lousy reader version:

A great mouse with a flawless sensor, no prediction, decent build quality (except for the cord) which comes at an affordable price.

Even more lousy reader versian:
Lol get dis mouz is rly god I like XD

September 2012 Standard Rotation (13 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 10:40 CDT, 3 September 2012 - iMsg
First month of new map rotation system just passed, some commend it, others aren't too happy about it.
However, it surely shows that the activity has dropped regardless of your opinion about it.

The lack of activity was most prominent on duel servers, where one of the most played maps was removed from public servers and only available to subscribers.
September's rotation again lacks competitive duel maps, which are crucial for the activity of standard servers. Clan Arena players will suffer the most with the removal of Campgrounds. We will be able to see and play some RA3 maps such as Theatre of Pain and Evolution.

21 arenas will be selected and update each first monday in month.
An arena has to be at least 3 months old to be eligible for the standard cycle.

Official news

The standard map pool now includes the following maps:
Arena Gate
Blood Run
Cold War
Courtyard
Demon Keep
Dies Irae
Evolution
Forgotten
Gothic Rage
Grim Dungeons
Hell's Gate Redux
Overlord
Rebound
Siberia
Skyward
Sorrow
Space Camp
Theatre of Pain
Toxicity
Trinity
Vortex Portal

and it's active from September 3 to October 1.

IE 3.0 not compatible with QcK/Taito? (7 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 04:27 CDT, 23 August 2012 - iMsg
I have a few issues with an out-of-the-fucking-box IE 3.0 here goes;

There's no possible way to overclock the damn thing.
I've managed to oc my wmo to 500hz without any problems, even a few 3.0s at someone else house - I'm doing the same method as always to no avail

I could possibly live with 125hz, but horrible jitter/lag is unacceptable, I have a hard time hitting my desktop icons. Not even sure how to explain it - just feels like moving up and down (y-axis) works fine, while x-axis is causing me huge problems.

it almost seems like the mouse "stops" tracking for a split second.

I tried to make a picture in paint which could possibly represent both my emotions towards this pile of crap.

I tried to replicate the pattern in the red rectangle.

As you can see, IT'S FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE.

I tried using another mousepad (Roccat Taito) and got the same shitty results.

At first I thought that either my pad or the sensor lens collected some dust; if I blow the fucker hard enough it works for a few seconds than starts jittering again.

So what gives, anyone has experience with faulty korean ie mice?

QLreddit EU Duel Night (2 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 12:54 CDT, 4 July 2012 - iMsg
Scheduled: 12:00 CDT, 4 July 2024

Duel Nights are friendly community tournaments mainly aimed at new and low level players who want to find others to play with, or people who just want to compete in a casual, friendly setting. It uses a ladder-like system which means everyone gets to play the same amount of games, so even if you don't have a shot at winning you still get to play a fair amount of games against similarly skilled players - maybe you'll find someone to practice with, play teams with or just talk about the game with. There's no prize but fame and glory and a cute gold medal next to your reddit username. The main objective is simply to play and have fun :)

The minimum amount of people required for a tournament is 5 people. Any less than this and the tournament won't happen :(

Anyone who wants are free to join, but all games must be played on an European server. You need a Challonge account to participate.

More info about the duel nights

Make sure you join our IRC channel: #qlreddit @ irc.quakenet.org (webchat) - you need to be present there during the tournament, and we'd love for you to hang out there when there's not a tournament, too :)

This is a reoccurring event that happens every Wednesday for EU players and every Sunday for NA players

duel maps (35 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 18:58 CDT, 12 May 2012 - iMsg
Let's face it, there's a lack of new maps being made for dueling.

Or shall I say, there's a whole lot of maps being made for duel but all of them seem wank and are horribly unplayable (I'm looking at you, recent additions)

It just crossed my mind that the map pool hasn't changed in ages, even if it did, the core maps still stay and the new maps are, well... quickly forgotten. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not pulling an EmeraldTiger in here. I'm totally aware why no one wants to play, let's say sorrow or devilish. I'm fine with it. I'm just wondering, if there are some old maps that were largely played in q3/cpm days, that QL could benefit from.

Only one I can think of is cpm3a, which has only 2 YAs apparently and I'm not sure how well would it play on vq3 physics

So if there was a new duel map what would you want it to be?

Something from yellack, something from old q3/cpm archives, more swelt maps or something completely different?

also, here's a list of duel maps that are not and will never be played for obvious reasons:
concrete palace
devilish
focal point

Bloodrun spawns opinion (92 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 07:47 CDT, 6 May 2012 - iMsg
So there's a bunch of posts scattered around various topics, it gets kinda confusing to "collect" them all in a single thread, so let's do this.

Post your opinion regarding the new spawns if you like them, OR state your reasons why the change should be reverted.

To quote SyncError
"If people don't like it, we'll just revert it quickly. But we need people to dislike it because they don't like the spawns, and not simply dislike it because they no longer can play the map the same way they always have.

Just give feedback, and it'll be an easy fix if we wish to revert. "

"because it sucks" is a not good example of relevant posts.

A poll could come in handy as well.

Here's some visualization provided by no else but Memento_mori

I guess I'll go first.
I rarely if ever play that map, but the first thing that somewhat bothered me is that I was unable to do as much spawn killing as usual. I think controlling the spawns is a part of the game and also the only way to recover from a bad start. The teleport spawn can prove to be a real nuisance - placing a spawn point so close to a teleport exit is a bit risky.

April 30th, update confirmed (102 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 14:16 CDT, 27 April 2012 - iMsg
Get your ass ready, 3 days to go and the long-awaited update is finally here.

Thoughts? apart from the recently leaked change-log, I guess it's good to see that the game is getting developed. Slowly but surely, one of these days we might just get a rich content update and less irrelevant cvars.

QuakeCon 2012 Pre-Registration opened (4 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 18:56 CDT, 24 April 2012 - iMsg
Quote from quakecon.org:
We’re less than four months from QuakeCon, and to get ready, we’re opening pre-registration tomorrow!

While general admission to QuakeCon remains FREE for all attendees, when pre-registration opens we will be offering premium packages. These premium packages are limited and will be available on a first-come first-serve basis.

Apparently, they're selling premium packs that include shirts and posters. Also, QuakeCon 2012 will take place on-site at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, TX. Doors to QuakeCon will open on Thursday, August 2nd at 9:00am Central and will remain open through August 5th.

QuakeCon remains FREE to general admission and BYOC attendees thanks to the support of id and Bethesda Softworks, as well as the QuakeCon volunteer staff and the 2012 event sponsors and exhibitors.

FPS require XP to attract people? (46 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 08:05 CDT, 21 April 2012 - iMsg
Do all modern FPS games require an XP system and unlockables in order to attract and maintain it's audience?

I'm talking mostly for the online part, especially exclusively multiplayer FPS games tend to do that a lot lately. Have FPS games really become slightly less engaging if they don't have constant progress tracking?

In other words, what does the future hold for upcoming FPS games?

We can see QL shifting towards this direction, that obviously means all potentially developed quakes will include this system.

Are such systems necessarily bad (e.g. QL Ranks)?

Maybe there's too many post-apocalyptic themed games out there right now but...

Fucker costs ~200$ on amazon

Newegg deactivated

The microsoft official site says "Currently, we have no online dealers selling the Microsoft® IntelliMouse® Explorer 3.0"

I just checked 4 local stores and all of them deactivated the product. What is going on?
Is e-bay the only place to get one this days?

-FFA- TOURNAMENT (7 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 13:35 CDT, 8 July 2011 - iMsg
Team -FFA- is organizing yet another Free For All tourney, which will be played on Germany Frankfurt server on Sundays and United Kingdom Maidenhead on Thursdays respectively from now on. The tournament is open to everyone, all Quake Live players are kindly invited, regardless of their skill level or experience. No player limit has been set, there are no prizes involved, but you do have a chance to pick the maps for the forthcoming game in case you win. Maps will either be picked by the winners, if they don't do that right after the tournament, the FFA-Clan will pick them instead.

In the previous edition, called Swedish Masters, Belgium dem0n managed to finish on top.

Which programming language to start with (151 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 00:17 CST, 21 February 2011 - iMsg
Greetings,
I'm becoming more and more curious about programming languages, it's just that I need some pointers on what is what, which ones are easy to learn and useless, harder to learn and crucial, which ones are you learning and why.

Also, how are the languages related to job opportunities?
Thanks in advance.

As a side note, I'm not entirely sure where to put this thread. Bare with me.

Kinzu + any sensor frankenmouse (5 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 19:51 CST, 9 February 2011 - iMsg
Greetings, a friend of mine has been desperately trying to change the sensor in his Kinzu mouse.

The problem is as follows, when giving the mouse to a friend, the mouse wheel didn't work and some irrelevant sources even state that changing the sensor is not possible for this mouse model.

My question to all mastermind tinkers, is it possible to change the Kinzu sensor and if so, is there an online guide to do so and would anyone be willing to do it?

Thanks, I'll try to add some images later

Tornado, a potentially good TDM map? (80 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 21:15 CST, 14 December 2010 - iMsg
Been testing it out for a bunch of minutes, it's really Swelt-esque as far as design goes, from my point of view, it has a decent item layout. Quad/RA/YA/LG/BS each have a room that needs to be controlled. Making quad runs or generally cruising around the map seems fairly easy at first glance, everything seems to be nicely connected which adds a fast flow to the game. There are a few hard jumps and plenty easy ones (if you count ramp jumps + air strafe from BS to LG as a jump anyway). However, the weaponry leaves me in doubt if this map, in its current state, can be considered a competitive addition to the TDM map pool.

Let me start with Team Arena weapons, namely the Chaingun.
I don't mind it being used in some random public matches, but it has no place whatsoever in a competitive map. See what they did to Solid? replaced CG with LG. That was a smart move. Now do the same thing for tornado and replace it with RG, which leads to my next point.

I have a really hard time imagining a TDM match without RG. Somehow I believe SG/RG/RL/LG are essential for every TDM map. Chipping off armour, defending an area and being a major pain in the ass with the RG has been a worthy tactic in TDM for more than a decade.

Other than that, I'd love to try it out on some pickups and see how better teams handle it.
