Just had a first world problem: when you go for an ice cream break, but don't want to any more ice cream after a few spoons because all you wanted was a break.

Alright, thought I'd keep my journal up to date to encourage sharing.

Dear ESR users, please accept our sincere apologies for the sites downtime and loss of data from about ~12 hours ago. We have moved to a new server, but the old server was turned off on us a day earlier than expected. On the up side, new hardware is much faster, and new software is more reliable.

Feel free to report any issues in the comments, on IRC, or issue tracker.

So, I realized I virtually stopped taking pictures, and I thought why, and it's clearly because I'm lazy. So, a few months back I consciously forced myself to start carrying a camera around, and lo and behold, I took a decent pic a day for two weeks straight, and ended up making an Instragram account: https://www.instagram.com/daemiurge/

Let me know if anyone knows cools users to follow. Right now, I'm mostly following guitar pr0n =)

Attached are some recent pics

120hz IPS monitors (21 comments)

It came as somewhat of a pleasant surprise to me, that there are now official 120hz IPS panels out there.

I was about to get Tempest X270OC, but it seems that there are other models out there, and I don't want to get anything outdated.

Has anyone looked into what's best and current, recently?

It's possible you have been missing a lot of major news lately, by concentrating on the serious competitions. Take a break from playing hard and going pro by indulging in instant gamisocializing
There have been various attempts over the years to "improve" the Doom palette. While these attempts had various goals, and succeeded to various degrees, one question remains: did the authors get paid billions of dollars for recoloring pictures? No? Then their attempts were objectively inferior to one group of people who did!

The hope is strong that certain developers leverage visual enhancement technologies discovered by mobile developers, the so called 'filters', as one of the numerous means of rejuvenating modern gamer interests.

Highest resolution 120hz monitor? (16 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 07:55 CST, 23 November 2013 - iMsg
I'm really not up to par on what the latest hardware is. I have Samsung 2233rz since it came out, and I'm ok with it, because I like the 16:10 ratio. I find more horizontal resolution not as useful. However, its controls are broke, and its color accuracy sucks blue balls.

So, I was wondering if there are any 120hz monitors with higher vertical resolution (>1050) and better color accuracy?

Are there new technologies coming that will allow better color and latency within a year, like AMOLED?

DaHang pre-DreamHack 2013 interview (70 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 06:43 CST, 21 November 2013 - iMsg
As part of the pre-coverage to the Winter DreamHack 2013 Winter event, we are introducing an interview with one of the top contenders, United States of America Tim "DaHanG" Fogarty, conducted by QL dueler, United States of America Nuttybr0. The interview explains his excitement to play at DreamHack and his sponsorship with Point Gaming thanks to United States of America Jochs.
DreamHack Winter is coming up in less than 10 days, how do you feel going in?

DaHanG: I feel very good. I haven't played top tier players except rapha a few times but he's never that impressive until days before the events when it's crunch time and he gets back in shape. So it is hard to tell exactly where I'm at but I feel like I am in better shape than I was at QuakeCon earlier this year.

Synapse 2.0 fucking sucks ebola pus (No comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 12:23 CDT, 28 August 2013 - iMsg
I got a DeathAdder 2013 for my work and tried to install the driver to configure DPI. It did not work and go into an infinite crash/report loop until I logout.

Here is my exchange with Razer about their awesome drivers. I started it by going to the website, registering and submitting support ticket:

------ Details of Your Request ------
After installing latest version of the driver (1.14), restarting, the "driver" icon loads. After logging in successfully, main window open up. Then it says "Downloading" 0% to 100%. Then I get an OSX error box: "installer quit unexpectedly."
Here is the crash dump: http://pastie.org/8244305
Here is the exception:
*** uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '-[IFNetworkDiskObject fileSystemType]: unrecognized selector sent...

This not as advertised. Please fix the issue.

So, everything seemed to be going fine as they seem to go from dumb copy/pastes to actually thinking about it, but the last reply from the is pretty amazing:

Hey Pavel,
Alright, I reviewed the logs, and it appears that the connection to the update servers drops while Synapse is trying to update. I don't know if you have any security protocols or anything, or maybe it could have something to do with the OpenLDAP you have running. Basically, its trying to download and maybe gets a bit of it, then the connection drops and it has to purge and start over. Is this computer a laptop by chance? The easiest one to eliminate as a cause of the problem is the internet connection, just take it somewhere else and see if the same issue happens. If it doesn't, then you would need to contact your ISP to have your connection looked at. If it does still happen, then I would recommend taking your computer to an apple store or somewhere that works on apples and have them look at it, or possibly reload the operating system to eliminate software issues if you have nothing on the computer of importance.

Best Regards,
Razer Support Tier II

- So apparently, I need to get support for my computer because their driver is crashing. Amazing. A mouse driver that crashes because of unstable connection, and it's not their fault.

Still trying to contain myself, since its probably more productive:

Hi,

I am on a Comcast Business (more stable than home) internet connection and typically don't have any issues. This is my workstation. It is behind a NAT, however not behind any fancy firewalls that would cut off an established TCP/IP connection. I don't have absolutely any other connectivity issues. OpenLDAP handles permissions, so if those are good, it should not bearing lower level network.

Assuming there is indeed a connectivity issue, if the connection drops, why does the download "meter" reach 100% and the installer crash with an exception? Either a corrupt or interrupted download should be re-tried. If the data is assumed to have downloaded, it should be checked for integrity afterwards. If it gets the data and it is not corrupted, the installer should not crash. Either way, a bad connection is not a justifiable reason for the installer to crash and not work here.

Is there anything you can do short term, such as provide a non connection dependent driver? Maybe the 'RzDataStore' file for DeathAdder 2013 that I can place in the right directory?

Long term, there is obviously a bug and this needs to be better handled in the next version of the driver.

To summarize, the driver crashes and burns with an uncaught exception. This is not an ISP or AppleCare issue, so I'm afraid contacting them will prove futile in my quest to get this great mouse working, so I sincerely hope for further assistance in getting this mouse to work :)

Thank you!

John Carmack Joins Oculus as CTO (145 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 10:57 CDT, 7 August 2013 - iMsg
John Carmack, chief architect of all id Software game engines up to now, has joined a pioneering virtual reality headset developer Oculus VR as its Chief Technical Officer. Here is what John himself says about this:
I have fond memories of the development work that led to a lot of great things in modern gaming – the intensity of the first person experience, LAN and internet play, game mods, and so on. Duct taping a strap and hot gluing sensors onto Palmer’s early prototype Rift and writing the code to drive it ranks right up there. Now is a special time. I believe that VR will have a huge impact in the coming years, but everyone working today is a pioneer. The paradigms that everyone will take for granted in the future are being figured out today; probably by people reading this message. It’s certainly not there yet. There is a lot more work to do, and there are problems we don’t even know about that will need to be solved, but I am eager to work on them. It’s going to be awesome!
--
My time division is now Oculus over Id over Armadillo. Busy busy busy!
-Twitter

According to id Software, however, he "is not leaving id & will continue to provide leadership for their games in development".

So the site was super slow and unresponsive, and I discovered we had 180+ connections just from one IP, and so I blocked that IP.

Then I checked the users by ip and it turnes out it was the last ip Jamerio user had logged.

So now I'm not sure if it was a normal usage pattern and we need to tune things to accomodate him, or what.

Doom 4 sucks already? (40 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 14:37 CDT, 6 April 2013 - iMsg
http://kotaku.com/five-years-and-nothing-to-s...-468097062

Rumors of Doom 4’s troubled development have been floating around for quite some time now, but over the past few months, we’ve learned a great deal more than what has circulated so far. I’ve talked to four people with connections to the Id Software-developed game, and they’ve described a studio plagued by mismanagement and lack of communication that has frustrated staff both at Id and Id’s parent company, ZeniMax (whose main branch Bethesda is the publisher of Doom 4 and a number of other games, including The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim).

We’ve also learned that in late 2011, after working on Doom 4 for three years, the studio behind the legendary series decided to reboot their newest game completely. Bethesda confirmed this to Kotaku yesterday.

“An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that Id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect,” Bethesda's vice president of marketing and public relations Pete Hines said in a statement to Kotaku. “As a result, Id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 Id is making, we will let folks know.”

We’ve heard a great deal more about what’s happened at Id over the past few years, and bits and pieces about what’s happening now. Today we can share it all.
....

Doesn't look good.

Shootmania Storm Beta applications open (236 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 00:22 CDT, 29 May 2012 - iMsg
In somewhat delayed news, a new semi-competative first person shooter Shootmania Storm is now available to selected beta testers. Undeterred by a lack of public consensus on the unreleased game, some players have already chosen to invest their time in it.

Based on previous community reports it is a slower than Quake, open terrain, kind of a game. On the other hand, popular gaming media reports the developer intends it be a "pure" FPS.
A whole experience system could have been implemented into Trackmania, but a game based on skill is more interesting for the people we like to play with. With Shootmania, it’s the same thing. It’s based on skill. There are no RPG mechanics. We want to make it as pure as possible.

Sign up for beta, and if you get to test the game, you can contribute you first-hand impressions in the comments.

Switzerland Memento Mori and Germany Twister are proud to present a new Quake Live tournament. Instead of the usual suspects this tournament will aim to showcase some of the lesser known players who play actively and try to improve their game. Ideally we would like to make it a series of tournaments to create lasting interest and motivation for new players to practise and eventually get invited to one of these events. The prizes are financed from donations to Memento Mori. All games will be covered by levelup's United Kingdom Zoot.

Postdesk Interviews Sujoy Roy (23 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 10:40 CDT, 13 May 2012 - iMsg
Our founding father, Director of ESReality, the first UK pro gamer, and eSports entrepreneur of all kinds has done an interview with Postdesk.com. Sujoy talks about his eSports career, business adventures, what he's playing with now, and the future.
How successful were you in professional gaming?

I came 3rd at that New York CPL tournament in the end, and I had a mixture of top 10 places after that in various competitions. If I’m honest I never really did very well at Quake 3. I think I hit my peak in Quake 1 when I was totally devoted to the game. I played a bit of Quake 4 when it came out too, but I don’t think I could have competed with the top guys like Toxic and Cooller who were hitting their stride.

A little change to make URLs more readable and compatible with future versions of the site. Again, any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

update:
Also added a hackish kind of caching, let me know if anything seems wonky.

Sorry about the downtime and any lost posts in the last few hours, had to expand the virtual disk and there were some problems with doing it live, so had to shut down.

Also, switched from apache to nginx, let me know if its faster now. Memory usage is at least half as much.

Online Cheating is Infectious (153 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 15:57 CST, 24 December 2011 - iMsg
According to a new paper discussed at technologyreview.com, cheating spreads by social interaction. Despite the seemingly obvious nature of the assertion, the details of the data and mechanics used to support the claim provide insight and help move beyond argument and mere assertions.
If you have friends who cheat, you are more likely to become a cheater, according to computer scientists who say this can be used to label you as a potential cheater.
...
Cheating also appears to be infectious. The likelihood of a fair player becoming labelled as a cheater in future is directly correlated with this person's number of friends who are cheaters. So if you know cheaters you are more likely to become one yourself. Cheating spreads like flu through this community.

If the dynamic of cheating mimics a disease that spreads at an exponential rate, it would underscore the importance of early response and strictness. It is also possible that 'Steam Community' is already per-labeling potential cheaters simply based on social data.

ESR parts with Hexus (170 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 13:23 CST, 8 December 2011 - iMsg
It's time to say good bye to Hexus, a very reliable and stable host with extreme uptime of 99.99% (except for when the disks crashed) for many years, and say hello to Maverick and his Maverick Servers and Gaming. The new server is about 1000 times faster (than a p3), however, nothing has been optimized. Please report any problems here!

PS.
I want to thank Sujoy and Maverick! There are many more good things to come now, which are only possible because of the move.

Doom 3 Source Code Released (71 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 17:52 CST, 22 November 2011 - iMsg
The source code for Doom 3 (id Tech 4) has been released today. John Carmack has talked about releasing it at this years QuakeCon, honoring the long time id Sofware tradition of open-sourcing their games, dating back to Quake 1. There was some delay in the release, due to id Software not being able to include a patented algorithm known as Carmack's Reverse.
This release has many positive implications for the modding communities based around id Tech 4 games, including that of Quake 4, and for those who simply want to satisfy their own curiosity.

You have to take the rough with the smoo (18 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 09:28 CST, 2 December 2010 - iMsg
http://cablegate.wikileaks.org/cable/2008/10/08BISHKEK1095.html

This shit is funny:
4. (C) The Prince reacted with unmitigated patriotic fervor. To his credit, he diligently tried to understand the Kyrgyz point view. However, when participants explained that some Kyrgyz feel that they were “unfairly†led in the 1990s to sign unfavorable contracts with Westerners, he evinced no sympathy. “A contract is a contract,†he insisted. “You have to take the rough with the smooth.â€

Prince Andrew took up the topic with gusto, saying that he keeps hearing Maxim’s name “over and over again†whenever he discusses doing business in this country. Emboldened, one businessman said that doing business here is “like doing business in the Yukon†in the nineteenth century, i.e. only those willing to participate in local corrupt practices are able to make any money. His colleagues all heartily agreed, with one pointing out that “nothing ever changes here. Before all you heard was Akayev’s son’s name. Now it’s Bakiyev’s son’s name.†At this point the Duke of York laughed uproariously, saying that: “All of this sounds exactly like France.â€

and on, and on...

and best part, in full:
¶13. (C) The brunch had already lasted almost twice its allotted time, but the Prince looked like he was just getting started. Having exhausted the topic of Kyrgyzstan, he turned to the general issue of promoting British economic interests abroad. He railed at British anti-corruption investigators, who had had the “idiocy†of almost scuttling the Al-Yamama deal with Saudi Arabia. (NOTE: The Duke was referencing an investigation, subsequently closed, into alleged kickbacks a senior Saudi royal had received in exchange for the multi-year, lucrative BAE Systems contract to provide equipment and training to Saudi security forces. END NOTE.) His mother’s subjects seated around the table roared their approval. He then went on to “these (expletive) journalists, especially from the National Guardian, who poke their noses everywhere†and (presumably) make it harder for British businessmen to do business. The crowd practically clapped. He then capped this off with a zinger: castigating “our stupid (sic) British and American governments which plan at best for ten years whereas people in this part of the world plan for centuries.†There were calls of “hear, hear†in the private brunch hall. Unfortunately for the assembled British subjects, their cherished Prince was now late to the Prime Minister’s. He regretfully tore himself away from them and they from him. On the way out, one of them confided to the Ambassador: “What a wonderful representative for the British people! We could not be prouder of our royal family!

Let me be the first to apologize for the plane built by communists, which crashed just a few hours ago while attempting to land in thick fog, and on to which the Polish president unwittingly decided to get on, despite being such a fierce contemporary anti-communist. This is no doubt, the hand of totalitarian past, reaching into the present day and preventing the Polish president from traveling on a Polish plane.

For kdawgs pleasure

8====D~~

I was still in High School, I had a big cock and was horny all the time, jerked off at least 3 times a day. My body is small and slim with very little hair, 5"4",125lbs. My fat cut 7" cock looked huge on me. I had been jerking off thinking about gay sex lately, I was very turned on by the fantasy of having sex with an older man, and having a cock in my ass.

I got a job working after school and weekends at a antique shop, it was ran by 2 older gay gentleman, very nice gentleman who were always flirting and teasing me. An older very distinguished looking handsome customer came in the store, he was a silver haired fox who looked like he had money.

The owners knew him well, he bought a small end table and asked the owners if I could help him unload it at his house, I thought this was kind of suspicous since it didn't weigh much but my horniness and curiousity made me jump at the chance. We rode in his SUV to a big house in a ritzy neighborhood and I carried the end table into his house. He gave me a tour, it was huge and very nice, there was an indoor hot tub and he asked me if I wanted to soak for a while, I told him I didn't have a swim suit and he laughed and told me I could go without, he always did.

I was getting turned on so I started to undress, my tank top came off first and my back was turned to him and I pulled down my cutoffs, no underwear and bent over to finish removing my cutoffs,
it was a turn on to expose my ass to him, he watched me climb into the hot tub, my cock was rock hard. I watched him take off his shirt, he had a sexy chest covered with silver hair, he pulled down his pants and underwear in one motion exposing a beautiful 8" cut cock, very fat. We sat in the tub for five minutes talking, he asked me if I wanted a massage, I moved over close to him with my back to him and sort of sat on his lap, I could feel that big cock, I started moving my ass around until it was between my cheeks, I moved up and down, it felt so hot, made my asshole spasm. He was rubbing my shoulders and back, he reached around and started massaging my inner thighs making my cock twitch, finally he started stroking my cock, I was so turned on it was all I could do not to cum. He had me stand up and started tonguing my ass while stroking my cock, I was in pleasure overload and exploded cum after about two minutes of this.

We went into his bedroom, still naked and dried off, he put his hands on my shoulders and gently pushed me to my knees, grabbed the back of my head and guided me to his cock. I sucked on it hungrily feeling it get harder in my mouth, when he was rock hard he guided me to the bed and had me lay on my stomach. He ate my ass again this time harder, getting his tongue up inside me, this made my cock hard again, I relaxed and felt my boypussie open up. Next he slowly inserted one of his fingers , it kind of hurt at first but then I started to love the feeling. Two fingers was next with some lube, he two finger fucked me for along time, I loved how it felt, like I was getting stretched. I was moaning and moving my ass up and down.

He stopped and put his big cock back in my mouth, I sucked him for maybe a minute and he pulled out and rolled on a condom, had me get down doggie style got behind me and pushed that big cock head against my tight hole. He slowly pushed, I thought it was to big and would never fit, all of a sudden it popped in, the sensation took my breath away, it felt so huge and it hurt a little, but I was starting to relax and it was feeling better by the second.

He slowly pushed in until he was deep inside me and moved in and out very slowly to start with, it still burned but the thought of getting fucked, having a big cock inside me was such a turn on.

He fucked me for a long time, after I got used to it and fully relaxed the feeling was pure pleasure. My cock was rock hard.

The pace got faster and harder, finally I came again, without even touching my cock, such intense pleasure. He came and stayed inside me, I layed flat on my stomch with him still inside me, he slowly went limp, slipped out of me and rolled off me.

Kdawg, i hope you came hard to this. cum back for more.

When you eliminate all other possibilities, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be true.

How did the stock market fall down, if not from a controlled devaluation? Why was Marill Lynch wired for a controlled devaluation at that exact point in time? Can an economical structure of that size and complexity be wired for a controlled collapse in the amount of time between the first subprime mortgage downturn impact and the time of the collapse? If so, why do such a thing?

Now, I don't really play many games, but I'd like to have a computer that can handle more than Quake 3. Can anyone recommend a suitable card that's not going to be a bottle neck with a 2.8 Core 2 Duo and that's a great value for the money?

3D Realms Shut Down (44 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 09:43 CDT, 7 May 2009 - iMsg
According to the article from Shacknews and numerous collaborating sources they cite the Duke Nukem Forever developer has closed its doors.
The closure came about as a result of funding issues, our source explained, with the shut down said to affect both 3D Realms and the recently resurrected Apogee. Employees of both entities have already been let go.
However, later on, they have received a contradicting update in regards to the fate of Apogee.
Deep Silver and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms," a representative for the companies told us. "Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned."
This does imply that there is a situation at 3D Realms. This sad turn of events comes after 3D Realms renewed the hopes of fans by having a journalist sit down and review their work as well a releasing a teaser.

New study: FPS games improve Eyesight (73 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 18:14 CDT, 3 April 2009 - iMsg
A new study from the Center for Visual Studies at the University of Rochester in New York, indicates that playing action first person shooters like Unreal Tournament and even Call of Duty 2 improves visual perception. Non-fps games however yielded little effect in the experiment.
In 2002, Daphne Bavelier, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Rochester in New York state, found that playing action video games improved visual attention skills (ScienceNOW, 18 April 2002). This time she compared avid gamers with nongamers on a type of visual perception called contrast sensitivity. It allows people to make out objects in dim lighting and to distinguish objects from a busy background.
The article also implies that the research will continue further on the specifics and differences of the effects of playing various types of first person shooters.

I am getting that laptop next week, unless someone can recommend a better alternative. Mostly I need a
1. portable (light, thin, well built) computer which is still
2. usable to me : at least one step up from 1280x800, I am going for 1600x100 for the M1530), not fugly (thinkpad)

Some of my questions, if anyone has one, does it seem as thin as 1330 and is there anything as good for $1000? As a side note I'm getting an academic deal, so I have been able to upgrade from standard configuration to 1600x1000 in resolution, and 2GHz in speed, everything else is the same, for $1045 in total.

Surprising article on NATO (171 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 18:02 CDT, 12 April 2008 - iMsg
Haha, looks like British propaganda machine sometimes fails and prints out rather surprisingly "undemocratic" pieces!
EU-Nato, under the Bush doctrine of continuous eastward expansion, becomes an unstoppable politico-military juggernaut, advancing relentlessly towards Russia's borders and swallowing up all intervening countries, first into the EU's economic and political arrangements and then into the Nato military structure. Considered from the Russian standpoint, Nato's explicit new vocation to keep expanding until it embraces every “democratic” country in Europe and central Asia, with the unique and critical exception of Russia itself, becomes hard to distinguish from previous expansions into eastern territory by French and German heads of state whose intentions were less benign than those of the present Western leaders.

Western politicians may ridicule such fantasies as Russian nationalist paranoia. But why shouldn't the Russians worry about Western armies and missiles moving ever closer to their borders? This contributes to a territorial encirclement very similar to what Napoleon and Hitler failed to achieve by cruder means. The official Western answer is that Nato's expansion is purely defensive, that no Nato country would dream of claiming even an inch of Russian soil. But the feigned innocence of the West's baffled answer to the encirclement protests only intensifies Russia's sense of fear and provocation - and there are at least three reasons why the Russians are right to feel aggrieved.

Russia's first reason for justified resentment relates to the purely “defensive” nature of Nato's expansion. As President Putin put it in his notorious (to Westerners) or celebrated (to Russians) Munich speech last year: “Nato expansion does not have any relation with ensuring security in Europe. On the contrary, it represents a serious provocation that reduces the level of mutual trust. And we have the right to ask: against whom is this expansion intended?”

Given that Russia is the only country in Europe (or in central Asia) that has been explicitly barred from Nato - and that will remain barred as long as Poland and the Baltic states are members - the only possible enemy implied by the alliance's “defensive” posture must be Russia itself. Every defence policy statement from Central Europe makes perfectly clear that defence against Russia is the main raison d'être of Nato. And given the Polish and Baltic experience of Russian occupation and oppression, it is hardly surprising that they see Nato's mission in a different light from President Bush or Gordon Brown.

300, xerp, and steroids (41 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 08:59 CDT, 6 April 2008 - iMsg
I found very interesting parallels between discussing self-achievement in the article that talks about how the '300' got their bodies causing some strange reactions and many peoples attitudes on servers and in the whole idiotic xerp flamewar.
The guy who earns my scorn is the ass who tries to disguise his drooping belly with a baggy t-shirt and pushes his chest out whenever a girl walks by because he has convinced himself he's “not like the rest.” He's the guy who offers free advice about training just because he's one step ahead of the poor guy who has to listen. And the most annoying pricks are the ones who say, “I've tried to get that ripped (muscular, lean, fit, fast, whatever) and I can't do it so it's impossible that anyone else can do it without chemicals.” Those who aren't the real thing always find an excuse for their failings when confronted by the real thing. Or they cast the accomplishments of anyone further up the food chain as having been achieved by cheating.

Even in the small world of mountain climbing a few guys were convinced that their betters were using EPO, “because there's no way they could be that much faster than me.” Ski mountaineering racing is the same. Cycling is the same; the best guy in the country goes to an international level race, finishes below the 50th percentile and before checking into his own training/diet/recovery/stress-management/genetics/etc the ego goes into self-preservation overdrive and imagines all sorts of doping practices to be responsible. This is a natural consequence of having been told from childhood, “you are a unique snowflake.”

And I found this pretty insightful and eloquently put because it applies to pretty much everything:
If however, you think you've done enough or you decide you have “arrived” then you'll stay in the small pond and stagnate. And when the rot is complete you'll be just a little bit better than those around you – your initial example will have driven them to reach higher levels of performance – and there you'll sit, an intellectually bloated, pontificating fuck who once had the juice to work hard but having done so feels entitled to coast on past success all the way to the grave. That's when you'll start offering opinions based on the certainty of your own short-lived, amateur experience.

Poles > Chavs (116 comments)

I know there has been a lot of talk lately about how Poles are everywhere, and they cheat, and this and that. Now, I have to say that Poles are much more useful than brits. Look around you, there are bound to be some poles propping the roof above you, or something. And who do you go see when your toilet is broken!?
Here is an article on how the British are drunken Oafs!

Super Mario meets Doom (6 comments)

In this clip, you'll see "a classic Super Mario Bros. level recreated in 3D, using the Doom engine." Though the skin may not be perfect, it's definitely a conversation piece to say the least.

Preferred Quake3 Movement (109 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 16:56 CST, 3 January 2008 - iMsg
CPMA, Movement at 125 FPS in OSP: 65% (147)

CPMA, Movement at 85 FPS in OSP: 20% (44)

OSP, Physics constants vary with FPS: 15% (34)

Due to reoccurrence of a year old debate on which movement behaviour is 'best' this poll intends to find the most popular opinion.
There are three choices, all of which have been described in the following thread and subsequent discussion:
* Bugged movement: variable jump height depending on FPS.
* Debugged movement: Consistent jump height set at what you get with 85FPS in BASEQ3 (56units).
* Debugged movement w/ increased jump height: Consistent jump height set at what you get with 125FPS in BASEQ3 (64 units).
