Today I ordered Painkiller. Sorry guys I sold out.

So do major tournaments sell copies of games? I wouldn't count my own experience as typical, I'm buying the game because there's going to be a million dollars of prize money and I want to try the game so that I understand what's going on when I'm watching the CPL demos. How many people are really going to do that, and will it repay whatever investment DC made to the CPL to take on their game (assuming that there was some investment made).

I know that the creators of Dawn of War paid a hefty sum to WCG so that their game would be included in the list, but was that really worth it. Will it drive game sales?

Is Starcraft so big in Korea because of the tournaments, or are the tournaments just there because Starcraft is so big?

The sceptics will say it's not going to make any difference. I'm slightly optimistic on this front though, I want to see tournaments like CPL, WCG and ESWC get more mainstream airtime. MTV covering CPL may drive a lot of gamers out to buy Painkiller, in the hope of becoming a pro gamer one day and taking a share of the incredible prize pot.

I guess I'm also thinking, in the back of my mind, that if I play a little I might like the game. Whilst I did enjoy Quake 3 (no really), I loved playing QuakeWorld. I never played for money or recognition in the beginning, I just played because it was what I wanted to do. Will Painkiller be the next game that I feel this way about? Heck I'm also wondering if I might get good at this game, and maybe score some prizes at a CPL event again. You see! The CPL motto is calling out to me - play hard, go pro. Run while you still can!

I hate partitions (50 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 19:20 CST, 11 March 2003 - iMsg
I did mean to write regular journals, that was my general thought when I was adding them. I guess I just got lazy. I'm sure I can spare a few minutes each day to put my thoughts in order.

So what's the beef with partitions? Here's my problem. I was trying to fix one of our servers a couple of months ago, it seemed to have some major hard drive issues. Turned out that it was the motherboard rather than the drive, but I only figured that out after mangling most of the HDDs around my house. One of the HDDs I mangled was an important one and I'd gone and deleted the partition with fdisk before I realised that another drive wasn't going to help the situation. I've been trying to figure out how to fix it ever since. If anyone knows for sure if it's possible to recover the data when a partition is deleted then please let me know. I've been playing around with PartitionMagic all today with no success. I'm tempted to just trash and reformat so that I stop stressing about getting my data back. I usually get over these things.

Have been playing UT2K3 recently, for want of a better game. Apart from the crappy framerate (which may be my PC setup) I'm actually starting to like it. I'm sticking to FFA mainly since that's what I first loved about FPS gaming, and I can get a little practice in for the PCGamer competition later this year. Since I'm getting the hang of the game I've stopped playing on BY and Jolt servers since most players seem to be pretty new, in the end it was a case of going for flawless victories every game. Now someone suggested KPlay as a better server I've been having some awesome games. I've also been playing some pickup games from IRC, although not many seem to get started.

Something else I've noticed is that *everyone* seems to be in a clan now, as if it was a badge of rank, even people that don't play in clan games. It seems a bit weird to me. I guess it let's me express some individuality by not being in a team.

Jees what a boring journal. You'd think I never left the PC. Hold on, I don't ever leave the PC! Ok, I'm not that bad. I'll cover some more interesting topics next time.

If you're curious the image is my own favourite, Ms Dushku, enjoying a cancer stick. It's my current phone wallpaper, to ease the burden of spending so much time making calls. Don't ask me why I love the pic, I just do.

Korea Baby! (52 comments)

I'm back in Korea. Jeju Island to be exact, between South Korea and Japan. And in the best hotel on the Island, which just happens to be a subsidiary of Samsung (go Samsung \o/). I'm here for the World Cyber Games Spring Conference, and there are apparently 25 other countries represented here at the conference to talk about this year's World Cyber Games tournament.

It's been a long flight from London to Seoul, and then an airport transfer to the next flight for Jeju Island so it feels like I've been travelling for a whole day. Suprising amount of leg space on Asiana airlines though, we're not going on KLM again for the finals, that's for sure.

Not much else to report. Met Choi, Kelly, Lisa and Jennifer here - Kelly was not fired (hmm private joke) and everyone else seems to be fine. I might wander down to the bar to see if any of the other guys are hanging around for a drink. Otherwise it's an early 8am start for the conference tomorrow.

I expect that the Russian representative will be wanting to bring the games list question and the lack of Quake 3 up for discussion. We'll see where that goes. I took down some notes from the threads on this website and the online petition, as well as some of the TsN synched demo commentary to show the level of spectator action Quake 3 generates. I honestly don't know what will happen though.

Did I mention that this hotel is fabulous? I think I did. Anyway here's a pic of me setting up my laptop (how sad am I?) and looking in the mirror.

New Betting Season Open! (30 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 09:04 CDT, 16 May 2002 - iMsg
XSReality betting has been restarted again with everyone on a clean sheet, so this is the time to get betting again. If you think you know Esports, then this is the way to prove it!

So how do you play? It's simple! Once you've registered an account you are automatically awarded some virtual money to start playing. Jump over to the betting page and check out all the open fixtures for bets you want to place. Click the option that you think will win and enter the amount you want to bet. Click "Bet" and you've placed your wager! Remember, that it's not just picking winners that makes a good better. The amount you win depends on how everyone else thinks the game will go. Picking an unlikely winner with long odds will win you far more than just picking favourites. Also note that the odds are always changing depending on how everyone else bets. The trick is to time your bet just right to get the best odds.

All winnings from the previous betting season has been swept into user savings accounts, so those of you that were doing well don't lose out!

As well as being an ESports coverage channel, ESReality.com is also a community of people interested in online and competition gaming. To help build our community we decided that everyone should be able to contribute:
  • your opinions on column updates
  • news from your perspective
  • forum topics you would like discussed
  • articles on topics that you think are important
  • game recordings that you have made or discovered
We recognize that the community is made up of gamers and not 'admins', so we allow everyone to take part. A system like this is open to abuse, so we do have forms of automatic moderation and certain users are given additional privileges to help maintain the site. However on this site, every reader should be equal.

Since this is a fairly different concept to what you might be used to, this article is a guide to help you make the most of ESReality.com.

The Virtual Puppeteer (29 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 07:27 CST, 1 November 2001 - iMsg
I was playing on one of the original Atari console systems yesterday, as part of a retro TV show, and it made me think about how computer games have changed over the years. Until you actually go and try out the video games of ten years ago you don't appreciate how much everything's advanced. Although, it must be said, it hasn't necessarily all changed for the better. There's a distinct lack of originality in the slew of new games, packaged in attractive glossy boxes on the store shelves.

One subject I do want to talk about is how much more interactive recent games have become. Through new hardware and software techniques the number of 'things' you can do is astonishing. This brings up the topic of this column; as game players we are the virtual puppeteers, bringing characters on screen to life with our own actions. Players do tend to be fairly distinctive too, sometimes you can tell who you're playing just by their style and technique. At the same time there's still so much untapped potential here for games. Imagine being able to control everything about your character on screen - hand and finger movements, arm waving, facial expressions, etc. Imagine hand-to-hand combat where you actually control each arm and leg yourself to make your own moves, or a lightsabre battle where you really control all of the swings and parrys.

This concept reminds me of the scenes in Being John Malkovich, where the puppeteer gives life to a marionette through a complex system of controls. These skills take a huge amount of manipulative skill and dexterity to master, but translated to a computer the possibilities are endless. Your online Avatar could have real expression and emotion because you would have the power to give them it. While bandwidth for this would be tricky, we already have the raw processing power to do this kind of complete control over a computer character.

One reason why we only see limited control, is that software houses don't want to make their game too complicated, otherwise they risk scaring away newer players. I remember John Carmack speaking on the subject of more control, and he drew a comparison with flight simulators that need you to read a long manual before even starting the game. He commented that with Quake 3 they wanted to make a game that was easier to jump in and play. I'm sure there's a happy compromise where new players can begin with the simplest controls to play a game, but then learn more advanced techniques as they progress. The learning curve is evident in all games already - would there be any harm in extending the top of that curve by allowing advanced control over your character? One consequence would be that experienced players would be a lot better at the game than newer ones and you'd have to play someone of similar skill for a good contest. But isn't that the goal of any game? To make the player want to improve.

The other big limiting factor is the hardware interface you use to control your character. How do you faithfully represent a complex system of controls? The real puppeteet uses a system of strings to control their marionette, but what do we use to control our computer generated avatars? While the keyboard and mouse approach works well for today's first person shooters, how do we control subtle facial expressions and a hundred other movements?

One line of thought I came up with stemmed from looking at the optical mouse technology that's becoming popular. They use a tiny camera to 'look' at the mousepad thousands of times a second. By comparing the separate pictures, the mouse can tell how far you've moved it between snapshots. It wouldn't take a huge jump in technology to make these sensors work in three dimensions. Instead of just looking at motion on the surface of the mousemat, theoretically you should be able to work out if the mouse is moving up and down too - by comparing how far away the mousemat surface is. This will most-likely need a special marked mouse surface, but there's no reason why it can't be done.

Now here's the good part. Imagine putting a sensor on each fingertip of a glove. All of a sudden you have five individual three dimensional points to control at the end of each finger. The number of control combinations from this kind of set-up is almost unlimited. As part of our lives, we generally have excellent co-ordination in our hands, so it wouldn't take long to get used to The Glove as a new controller. No doubt some big company will read this and steal the idea, but at least I said it here first!

Maybe one day the movie industry will consist of computer generated actors and us virtual puppeteers will be controlling them for the silver screen. I bet you never imagined playing Quake would lead to a Hollywood career. We can but dream.
