Are these QuakeLive changes real? (29 comments)

I'm not even going to put a rant here, they're just a giant crap on the legacy of what is Quake. It's like the sort of joke gameplay change list people used to do to troll.

Best gaming mouse (41 comments)
Posted by ix @ 19:48 CDT, 1 June 2013 - iMsg
So my last mouse (MX500) is on the verge of dying, adding to the absurd pile of dead cable mice (MX518, G500, Ikari Optical and a Death Adder) and I want to get a new one.

What do people think are the best gaming mice at the moment? My fall back option is the Ikari Optical as I've had one and loved it but I'm considering the Steelseries Sensei Raw or looking at the new Death Adder. Any got these mice? For the Sensei Raw can you make it freak out with fast movements? This was one of my main reasons for loving the Ikari Optical as it could deal with fast movements.

Update: Ordered the Zowie Evo 2 in black. Thanks for suggesting them, oreozz.

CPMA 1.49 Bugs and CPM Dev (693 comments)
Posted by ix @ 20:37 CDT, 27 September 2011 - iMsg
In something of a Blues Brothers moment the band is back together. There will be at least one more CPMA release with further bug releases likely. Please post any CPMA bugs here and we will look in to it. Major features are unlikely to be added so no feature requests unless it's small.

The CPM gameplay is mature but can be tweaked if the community wants it to be. Let me stress the community wanting it part, nothing is going to be pushed on you and a large majority of the community would need to want something to change for it to change. If the community wants something tested we can add a CPM dev gameplay to 1.49 which will let you test any changes. It will still contain the current CPM gameplay as well. If you'd like us to look at or discuss any gameplay issues please post here.

I'm not sure what's going on with promode.org, I have no idea who owns it so we'll use this thread for the moment. A forum may be sorted at some point.

My favourite genre is horror so finding a new gem is special, especially when mainstream horror is so weak. This film is ultra low budget but impressively disturbing and ranks along side Martyrs and A Serbian Film.

Any one else tried this?

Good non-TN LCDs? (13 comments)

It's finally time to upgrade from my trusty Sony CRT. Do any of you use non-TN LCDs such as PVA or IPS that give full 8 bit colour and use them for gaming? What do you have and is it good? TN screens are obviously cheaper and have much better GtG times ~2ms for what I was looking at vs 6ms for the PVA LCD, would 6ms cripple gaming?

Skyline: Invasion of the Flying Vaginas (23 comments)
Posted by ix @ 22:00 CST, 29 November 2010 - iMsg
This movie is a steaming pile. Writing some kind of pseudo review is a part of the healing process from accidentally having watched it. Earth is invaded by a bunch of Unreal Engine design portfolio aliens, some of which eat people with their giant vaginas, probably some kind of messed up longing in the minds of the writers from the enormous quantities of cock they must have had to suck to get this garbage film made. I'm talking orgies. The characters suck, Turk from Scrubs and the Hispanic guy from Dexter are rubbish but at least die. I think everyone dies unless the remaining vapid pretty chick can survive on a cannibalistic meal ticket of hoovered up people. There's a weird Christian rapture angle but I don't really care enough about Christians or the film to figure it out and I doubt it goes anywhere. The one question this film leaves in my mind is: is this some kind of Scientologist plot?

I need to invent some kind of rating system to rate this, it's marginally worse than Battlefield Earth.

I nearly forgot: "It's not dead, it's just really pissed off!" Fuck.

Sport after gaming (101 comments)
Posted by ix @ 17:17 CDT, 9 September 2010 - iMsg
Almost a year ago I started fencing again, a sport I'd done for a few years as a kid before getting burned out on too much competition. The transition from gaming back to sport has been interesting and quite surprising, with the skills gaming gives you being surprisingly applicable now that I've seen fencing before I was a gamer and after.

The first surprise going from gaming to fencing was understanding of the rules. In gaming the rules are enforced automatically by the nature of the virtual universe you play the game in. If something is against the rules (in a mature competitive game) then it's simply impossible to do that thing, you cannot make armour spawn faster or run out of bounds by any normal in game action. In a real sport the rules are an artificial set of ideas imposed on reality, which doesn't really give a fuck about your sport so the sport takes place in the mind. What is surprising, given these differences is that in retrospect I find gamers to have far greater awareness of the rules of their game and opinion about those rules than I have found in fencing. In gaming if any little thing is non-standard then people will be pissed, even at a relatively casual skill level- people want things to be standard and they know what the standards are. In fencing the understanding and awareness of rules I've encountered has been really poor, with each person, including coaches and referees, having their own idea of how it's supposed to work that's sometimes entirely different from the written rules. So much so that I've had to print out the international rules and force a coach to read part of them.

The use of demos as a way of improving is very normal in gaming, most players watch demos and replays for entertainment and quite a lot of players to see tricks, tips and strategies. In sport this is a really useful skill but seems to be something only done at the higher levels. So gamers are better at teaching themselves the game, in part maybe because very few gamers get any kind of coaching so start off in the habit of teaching themselves.

Mental focus: most of us have spent entire days playing Quake games or Starcraft or whatever other fairly intense game that requires complete focus. The ability to concentrate that this builds, and the mental control to throw out nervousness or thoughts about unrelated things to sport is extremely useful. It's quite noticeable that non-gamers' attention, especially in a sport that's quite a lot like gaming like fencing, wavers much more easily.

This also extends into tactical and strategic thinking. Most people fancy themselves as some kind of Napoleon re-incarnate, then if you game for a while you discover not only that you suck but that you have a whole set of fake rules built up in your mind about what's allowed (Sirlin's Scrub), what's lame and so on. A bit of online gaming rips this naiveté away if you want to win at all and replaces it with knowing how to do every lame move and learning how to reach the conventional game by applying the answers to the cheap stuff. Transferring that skill to sport you come prepared at a much higher level than would be associated with your overall skill-level (because of course these skills exist in all sports) to abuse and open up even the smallest mistakes your opponent makes. You're also far more ready to change what you're doing and strategize on the fly if something isn't working, non-gamers are surprisingly terrible at this, with very little concept of a metagame and how to use it.

Of course there are things I'm really enjoying in sport that gaming lacks- practice in sport feels like it pays off more, perhaps because practice time is more limited than in gaming where many people put many hours per day in every day. Gym time is almost like buying a good gaming mouse each time you do it (I know that's a lame analogy, still it's the same feeling of being that bit better), giving you that bit more speed and power to use next time you play the sport and changing the sport slightly as a result. In gaming this effect is far more limited as you're heavily bound by the predetermined resource and power levels of the elements that make up the game.

Anyone else found gaming applies surprisingly to real sports?

The hype has to be some kind of insider joke, this is one of the most boring, least scary films I've ever seen. Spoilers probably, not that there's much to spoil. The film can easily be recreated, get two friends to sit on/lie in a bed, then, outside the room stomp up and down the stairs, film it and you've probably exceeded the production quality of this film. Bonus points for using a piece of string to pull a door open and closed.

Tonight I will sleep the unquiet sleep of one disturbed that such utter dross exists and is apparently liked and found scary. The BBC program Ghostwatch from the early 90s did it so much better.

If Yuka wants a reasonably clear name and the community actually has any interest in resolving whether he cheats or not a challenge wouldn't be that difficult to organize. This isn't a court of law so it's not really a case of innocent until proven guilty, if nothing further happens he'd always be muttered about much as walter has been. Yuka supposedly took a large step up in ability, which if he were cheating should make it easier to spot than it might be for some others so I propose that at an arranged time, in something like 2 sessions he play a series of games against players like spartie. He may perform a little worse than normal due to pressure, that would be understandable, but it would, if he were legit fairly easily demonstrate that he can play at that level.

Starcraft 2: a gameplay carcrash? (162 comments)
Posted by ix @ 12:10 CDT, 16 June 2009 - iMsg
This is the second or third version of this post, it's been sitting on my harddrive as I pondered posting it or not. It's a good chance to be utterly, completely and totally wrong as well as deeply unpopular with the hordes of Gillz who will treat Starcraft 2 as the second coming of Jesus; any criticism will be because you're a noob, you just don't understand or you're a fanboy of something else. This way I can get my licks in before the orthodoxy is unassailable.

Starcraft 2 will be huge, there's no doubt about that and will probably be the second best RTS game ever created. I write this because it wont be the best RTS game, we're getting Starcraft Lite rather than Starcraft 2 and the signs are there to read as to why. The obvious retort to this claim is the usual 'omg DUDE, it's a BETA, it'll get like WAY better' (many people who disagree with me come from California). Remind me- what was the last game that really changed through beta as opposed to getting a little more polished? There are stronger arguments against this, the issues with Starcraft 2 are systemic, they're not little things that fiddling a couple of numbers can change. The pieces of a game all interconnect in ways that mean you have to set certain ideas early in the design process and cannot shift the whole far from that afterwards.

The macro issue has been discussed to death on Starcraft forums but not everyone here will be familiar with it. In Starcraft 2 there are a couple of interface changes that will destroy the game's skill curve and many players, even very experienced StarCraft players have their heads in the sand over this because they've never been through the sequel process. They have confidence that depth will appear mysteriously in other places to compensate. This doesn't happen, depth is not magic, you should be able to explain its source and the reason for the way the interactions create depth.

The important changes are auto-mining and multi-building select. Automine means that if you rally (where the unit goes after it's been built) a worker production building to minerals the worker will automatically start mining after being produced. Sounds fine doesn't it? I mean telling every worker to mine is just so tiresome after all. This utterly destroys depth by removing the link between multi-tasking skill and macro. 100% macro is basically unattainable in SC and the slow improvement in macro has helped keep the game fresh, if after 1 year people can produce a little more at a given time in the game it can introduce cascades of changes as to which strategies are viable. It also changes the timing of many existing plays in the game, see? Explicable depth.

In Starcraft 2 top players will reach 100% macro very quickly, if they're investing in economy it will happen perfectly, even during fights and harassment, which is where perfect macro was hard before as you have to shift your view point to tell the workers to work in Starcraft. If you have four bases in SC2 that you want to produce workers you press your bases bind (all bound to one key) and hit the worker shortcut 4 times. That's it. Even low-level players will macro perfectly. Compare to SC's 4 separate binds, 4 worker shortcut uses then 5 view shifts (1 to each worker and back to where you were looking) with 4 orders to mine. The arguments for SC2's interface have been extremely facile- 'it's progress', 'it's needed for newbies' (because not being dumbed down has hurt StarCraft SO much so far) or the worst, because it dresses itself in the clothes of game design- that it's just unnecessary clicks, why don't we make it take 20 clicks for each worker? Is that depth, huh? It's a question of degree, we could make it take arbitrarily many or few clicks, up to completely automated after 1 click so there is no reason why the SC2 interface is the default choice that's sensible, they are arbitrary levels of difficulty set against how highly you value the ease of use. Any level of difficulty of macro must be justified on its own merits. SC's current system creates depth by doing the most important thing in game depth- it creates a trade off of a vital resource, and in this case it's one of the deepest trade offs in gaming because the resource is YOU, not an arbitrary sum the game hands out, it's your ability to multitask, your hand speed and your choice- do you focus on the fight, your harassment, your scouting or your economy? By killing this trade-off depth disappears down the plug hole with alarming speed and nothing to take its place.

The next counter-argument, which leads on to my following point against SC2, is that the depth will be recovered by having deeper combat, possibly in more locations at once so the game wil be more exciting. From what I have understood of SC2 this will not happen. Macro is being re-focussed back toward one base with a later expansion than in SC so there will be fewer fronts to fight on, on average. This is a subtle interaction though and I may be wrong, it macro may be as or even more rewarded, I suspect not though for the next reason. The powerful attacks that helped define SC- sieged tanks, psi-storms, reavers and EMP (the examples demonstrate the global design choice) are all being nerfed or removed. Powerful attacks are weaker. There are pseudo-justifications for some of this but the overall effect wil be awful, 'smart'-caster being the one justifying the reduction of psi-storm power (basically it's being made much easier to use en masse so they have to nerf it). What does this mean for the game? Giant clumps will be less vulnerable as there are no swingy attacks that punish it. Map layout will reward you less for good positioning (as in a small number of units will no longer be able to hold against a large mass, or at least to a much lesser extent). Games will be more boring as fewer expansions can be held (well positioned units will get steamrolled by the giant ball army so only 2 bases will be held at a time), the intention of greater interaction will, counter-intuitively based on the aim of changes Blizzard are making not happen. There will be far fewer comebacks as small positional errors will not be punished enough to change the game much, it will be more like Warcraft 3 where you build up and protect small advantages through micro and any real lead will be nearly insurmountable, grinding out a boring and predictable win with your giant ball army. Interaction will be reduced and we'll see far more Warcraft 3-like games of one expansion each, fight to exhaustion then get another expansion.

There are other things that flash giant warning signs about SC2's depth but I am in danger of Jamerioing. The one of Superunit Protoss Mothership is an absurd gimmick piece of game design that practically screams DANGER WILL ROBINSON about the designer's thought process (CORRECTION: said designers have now clued up and fixed this nonsense so I'll add a new one). The Terran Thor is another warning-'hey guys, it's a cool giant robot. We're not quite sure what role we're going to give it but it's cool so by gosh we're going to shoe-horn it in regardless'. Another change that hints at bad choices is the Terran ability to recycle bunkers and turrets for their minerals after using them. The main point of SC's depth is resource investment choice. If you can make your opponent build a bunker or too many turrets you get ahead. This significantly reduces the pressure on players to perfect placement and will give a very hard to balance late game boost to Terran (along with reusable expansions) where they turn everything they can back into money.

Starcraft 2 will be massive, no doubt, everyone will jump on it as the next serious Progame. It will be played out in two years but the incredible execution skill will distract many people from the fact that the game is no longer developing, it's the same fights, timings and strategies every time. If ever a game needed a promode from day 1 it's SC2. It wont get one, or it wont be accepted sufficiently in time, it'd require the Koreans to use it for it to catch on and we will miss out on the potentially greatest game ever made because of it. It's really sad to see one of the greatest game franchises ever made getting hit so hard with the newbie stick.

Edit: the most recent versions of the gameplay seem to indicate that Blizzard are aware of and correctly addressing a lot of these issues. I'm still concerned about the loss of power from siege tanks (which are reportedly still pretty useless) and Psi-storms as well as the mobility of jump units but we shall see. SC2 might even be better than SC if unit command lag is addressed along with a return of destructive unit power. And the title is just sensationalism. So there.

Designing a new Quake 3 (460 comments)
Posted by ix @ 14:17 CDT, 15 April 2009 - iMsg
CQ3 seems to be somewhat losing its way and QuakeLive only has limited room to change due to asset limitations so I thought it'd be an interesting discussion. What might a new VQ3 gameplay look like?

A flamewar is almost inevitable but to make some attempt to head it off- I mean a strafe jumping gameplay with no QW/CPM style air control and am not that interested in discussing crouch sliding as I think its limitations and issues have been covered before. I'll expand on this when talking about movement. Netcode-wise I think it'd also be good to step back a little from the excesses of xerp and too much backwards reconciliation. I'm sure many would say 125 FPS physics and then argue endlessly about that. In a new game maintaining a bug would be unacceptable, what you want is similar gravity/jump height/accel rather than the bug.

So the changes I'd consider for a VQ3ish gameplay and why:

The most important change is to replace MG with a QW-style Shotgun. This should have a similar damage per second as the TDM MG, spawners should not be defenceless, but they should not have the long ranged ability that the MG gives. This is a big part of the mindless aspect of cess that's done huge damage to CTF and TDM.

Movement physics- something approximating the 125 FPS physics seems to be most popular, some fine tinkering with ground acceleration, ground friction and ground deceleration could really improve base Quake 3 gameplay for these reasons:

The most exciting aspect of Quake 3 movement IMO is to watch a player like Impulse's feel for the ground friction and the way he uses circle jumps with normal movement to take lots of speed around corners. A new movement could open up this aspect by slightly reducing friction to allow more from circle jump cornering. This is a more interesting mechanism than crouch sliding and extremely closely relates speed to player skill.

A slight increase in ground acceleration supports this form of movement and gives close combat a little more pace, linked with the most important change- if only ground deceleration is significantly boosted you can greatly improve player agility (importantly the ability to break LG locks) without really changing player speed around the map. The other obvious change to movement is the significant reduction or removal of the cripple effect where your movement is reduced while you're under the effect of knockback.

Personally I'd like to see ramp and double jumps, these add options for mappers and gameplay without significantly changing the VQ3 concept, it worked very well in Quake 2 and resistance to the idea seems mainly to be because people are used to what Q3 has and little more.

The resource levels in VQ3 gameplay are about right for duel, for CTF and TDM it would be worth considering a higher tier armour object that gives 150 armour so that pickups give 100 or 150, the lack of armour in team modes helps to create their cessy nature by making control less relevant. 50/100 works well for the kind of item cycling duel of VQ3. The main resource change I'd make would be to limit maximum ammo levels to around 15 or 20 rockets or equivalent. The limits in VQ3 are ridiculously high.

What sorts of concepts or changes might be interesting for a new gameplay based on the no air control style?

PMX is the next iteration of Promode gameplay development combined with a standalone asset-base and a new setting, we're aiming to create FPS gameplay that pushes new ideas successfully while still being suitable for highly competitive games. The industry appears to have forgotten how to do this. We're also developing it to be an easily modifiable base of assets and code design that's suitable for mods, new modes and fun ideas.

Fun facts about Sweden (58 comments)

Sweden, land of attractive blondes, Ikea and a model society. Sweden's currently got a population of around 9 million according to the nice men from the CIA; during the 1930s up to the 1970s they had a mass sterilisation program of undesirables: the insane, those with congenital illnesses and presumably the unattractive women and bad Quake players. This ran to a charming half-a-million sterilisations, which given the population of the nation is an amazing figure. An unexpectedly dark heart for a nation. Wiki is full of so much knowledge. Another little gem was the Japanese's:

"Under the colonial Korean Leprosy prevention ordinance, Korean patients were also subjected to hard labor."

Hard labour for lepers seems at once cruel and unusual, while simultaneously hilarious.

In a time of otherwise garbage film releases this is a watchable film. It has some interesting messages although I can't talk much about it without spoiling. It's about an FBI agent trying to uncover a crime lord by going deep undercover so Donnie Brasco with some zeitgeist commentary thrown in.

It's important that people support this speech for two reasons: the creeping loss of liberty and to show that the negative Murdoch-controlled coverage is not balanced media.

CPMA 1.46 and CNQ3 1.42 released (196 comments)
Posted by ix @ 17:13 CDT, 27 April 2008 - iMsg

MOD:

Challenge Promode Arena v1.46

IMPROVED QUAKE3.EXE:

Challenge Quake 3 Windows executable v1.42

Challenge Quake 3 Linux executable v1.42

Challenge Quake 3 Linux server executable v1.42

OTHER:

CPMA maps (no changes, only download if you do not have them, required to run any kind of server)

Challenge Quake 3 executable v1.42 SOURCE CODE

The latest update of the Promode mod and Challenge executable are now ready for download. All players should upgrade to 1.46 and the executable is highly recommended but not required. Server admins should also consider upgrading to the Challenge executable, it offers fixed event handling that ensures MVDs are correctly recorded.

This is mainly a maintainance release with the noticable changes for players being the return of the old lightning gun styles for CPMA, sound improvements and a memory leak fix for Challenge Quake 3.

IMPORTANT: the partial fix to the sound memory leak means that sound megs are now taken from the com_hunkmegs allocation. You do not need to set com_soundmegs to more than 8 and with a com_hunkmeg value of 64 or more you should be fine, if you have an unnecessarily high sound megs value like 64 and only 128 or less megs in the hunk then the game will crash. Fix it by setting sensible values.

Full changelogs on the Promode website.

cg_xerpclients 1 in VQ3 CPMA gameplay (673 comments)
Posted by ix @ 15:39 CST, 7 March 2008 - iMsg
What is the general opinion or opinions of VQ3 players about the xerp clients command in VQ3 gameplay? Is the effect on shaft accuracy too negative for the overall gameplay?

A little info on xerp although I do not pretend to understand the details: the effect is to push what you see into a fully extrapolated state, that is projected positions based on current, known information. It is not quite the same as timenudge which could be used to move a player's image significantly ahead of where they were but the feel is similar as it moves the image to where it 'is' before lag and so on is taken into account (super rough and probably somewhat inaccurate explanation) in receiving enemy position updates.

Warcraft 3... (18 comments)

I have no idea why I play this piece of shit game, waiting for SC2 now. No other game offers quite such a shitty experience of ImbaElf/Tower rushed/Towerrushed/ImbaElf/Maphacker and repeat. Can't wait for the patch where the change log will read something like:

Blademaster nerfed, Hex nerfed, Raiders nerfed, Spiritwalkers most useless buff ever, NE +one million to everything (there will be some kind of minor nerf to distract you from the series of buffs NE get as usual). -_- It's going to be so awesome.

If you liked the film Dog Soldiers then check out the British film Outpost, made in 2007 about a bunch of mercenaries being hired to check out a bunker, it's pretty awesome for a low budget movie.

Relative truth (103 comments)
Posted by ix @ 13:06 CST, 9 February 2008 - iMsg
Heavy title I know. The heady zeitgeist of religion and eye-candy gamers made me notice the number of people who seem to believe truth is relative, to quote the Dude 'well that's just, like, your opinion, man'. The truth really is out there, people aren't all equally right about everything and it seems to go from everything from the serious to the petty.

Education telling everyone they're a winner and that their view point is interesting must have something to do with this, or the ridiculous post-modern inability to say what you mean, as if expressing a real and unreserved opinion is naive because you might be wrong. Stupid and plain wrong ideas do not deserve respect nor discussion, it's the kind of feeble thinking that leads to creationism even getting a shot at being taught in schools, because it's an alternate view (of course). That it takes the ridiculous counterpoint of pastafarianism to shoot it down is a strong indication on how weak people's grip on fact is becoming.

Colbert's factinista joke is painfully accurate, like facts are just one version of reality with no more value than any other and a slightly tiresome and wayward one. It doesn't matter that a lie is old and well-worn like sky daddies, it's still a huge falsehood that deserves not an ounce of respect. Some kinda ramble.

Privacy (26 comments)
Posted by ix @ 20:45 CDT, 27 October 2007 - iMsg
The loss of privacy is one of those issues you generally sort of complain about but don't really care but recently I had an experience that really pissed me off about the loss of privacy. You'd think that after medical records banking should be something that's private, between you and your bank. I can understand why your credit rating is public so a company can sell items and services to you safely but beyond that why would any information about you need to be public?

I opened a new account with my bank, I can spread my banking details on the internets because apparently the whole damn world already knows, a few days later I get a cold call from a financial services company totally unrelated to my bank which opens with 'Hi, we notice you've been doing blah blah blah, can we interest you in our financial services?' So with some kind of BS hidden small print text my bank has sold my personal details, exact information about banking transactions and my mobile number to another company. Good one... the banks need to be put in order by the regulators, this is not acceptable.

Obituary: Esports Reality (146 comments)

Esports Reality, also known at one time as XSReality, was one of the great coverage sites for the fledgling competitive community. It passed away screaming today, run over by the corporate-whore vehicle known as 'Esports'. Friends will remember it for the robustness of discussion and some of the more memorable trolls as well as the freedom that let you get a real feel for what people thought about competitive gaming issues.

A small service will be held to honour its passing.

Scientology vs the BBC (88 comments)
Posted by ix @ 12:50 CDT, 15 May 2007 - iMsg
As more or less an evangelising atheist (how's that for unbiased journalistic credentials?) I enjoy taking a shot at religions and cults when the chance arises. The recent Panorama program about the cult of Scientology on the BBC was OK as such programs go but what's really interesting is the cult's attempt to respond.

You can watch the program this week on the BBC website at:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/programmes/panorama/default.stm

It's a little biased in its presentation although I don't think I'd have any success at pinning down a sinister bunch of nutters like the Scientologists either, it's not in the league of Jesus Camp as an honest presentation of people with no spin attached, repeatedly asking them if they're a cult smacks of second-rate journalism a little too much.

Where it becomes interesting is the cult's response which has been posted on YouTube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxqR5NPhtLI&am...mp;search=

Now this feeble little hit job is Scientology's attempt to silence criticism but is amusing and informative in its own right. The journalist had been trailed and goaded by carefully planned attacks and when after a week of this he shouts this is presented as if his integrity is negated completely.

People need to be very aware of this kind of attack on someone's character, no one is whiter than white and everyone will snap at some point. This kind of methodology is exactly what's used (along with more blatant physical methods) by regiemes to discredit opposition. The Scientologists are a very dangerous group that people should be as aware of as is possible.

QCon ET (13 comments)
Posted by ix @ 19:04 CDT, 5 August 2006 - iMsg
The QCon ET really impressed me as a spectator experience, tosspot running out of octaves and the sheer intensity of the game. I don't like nor play ET but see its potential as a castable game. It revolves around objectives that people can easily understand and the theme is great, hopefully (although following their recent TeamArena/D3/Q4 track record my hopes are low) ETQW can achieve big things as a pro team game. My only reservation is the theme, I have no idea why ID think Stroggs is a cool theme, I don't give a damn about futuristic aliens and people trying to kill weird giant green machines with stupid names.

The success of ET, BF and CS is not just about well designed teamplay games, people also like 'real' or near real settings, I think Stroggs are a bit far from that, I don't have a corny Strogg accent to crack I need ammo jokes with. =/
