Posted by tzz @ 03:38 CST, 8 March 2010 - iMsg
Sooo, WCG just announced the official games for this year:

WCG 2010 Official Game Titles:

PC
· Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne (Blizzard, RTS)
· Counter-Strike (Valve, FPS)
· TrackMania Nations Forever (Ubisoft, Racing)
· Carom 3D (NeoAct, Sports)

Xbox 360
· Guitar Hero 5 (Activision, Music)
· Tekken 6 (Namco Bandai Games, Fighting)
· Forza Motorsport 3 (Microsoft Game Studios, Racing)

WCG 2010 Promotional Game Title:

PC
Lost Saga (IO Entertainment, Action)

They say they'll add more official, mobile and promotional games, but it's kind of ridiculous that there's no SSF4, no StarCraft, no QL (although this is id's fault).........

Torchlight (12 comments)

I was bored waiting for the L4D2 demo so I downloaded the Torchlight one and I have to say its combat is one of the best I've seen in an ARPG. It's simple and arcadey, but somehow extremely satisfying.

Think of a polished Diablo I with the exact same structure and made by some of the designers of Diablo and Diablo II.

It's a shame it has only three classes and no multiplayer at all, but it's still a nice single player game and it even has a netbook mode that lowers the graphics to make it playable on shitty computers.

Apparently there's a F2P MMO coming in about two years, which could be really interesting if they really manage to maintain the same combat.

LoL (37 comments)

Sooo, I've had the beta for quite some time but I never got to try it until yesterday.

Graphics are really cool, despite the low polygon count, and the result is awesome. A friend of mine didn't like the cel shading (or whatever it is) and the more childish graphics when compared to DotA, but I think that sullen ambience suits the game pretty well.

I played with a little girl that looked like she came straight out of American McGee's Alice. She sucked imo, but it was fun, we won and I still got a few kills and assists in a team full of ranged heroes with a guy that managed to get killed 12 times in the early game. Considering the last time I played DotA was about three years ago, I think I did quite well.

As far as I could see, gameplay was exactly like DotA, just with different heroes and a pair of universal skills. It even keeps that last hit stuff when killing creeps that I always thought it was stupid, but w/e. If the early game is boring, maybe they should change the XP progression instead of giving players stupid things to care about (denying is cool though).

I don't understand why would they put universal skills (everyone had a nice heal and a trap) because it homogenizes the characters, but it looks like you'll be able to unlock abilities and runes the more you play and you'll have to choose before the match which ones you'd like to use, so it can be interesting if they manage to balance it well.

Despite being an unlockable hater, I think I can take unlockables in a game like this provided the match making is effective.

I haven't played HoN, but from what I've read the nice feature set is one of its strong points (LoL didn't look any better than DotA in that regard), although I dislike its graphics.

LoL has the advantage of being free though, I think I can convince my friends to play it more easily just because of that.

Has anybody here tried both? Any impressions on which one looks more promising?

Valve: "Fuck you Europe" (23 comments)
Posted by tzz @ 09:23 CST, 18 December 2008 - iMsg
Here comes the 1€=1$ bullshit again, but now it affects all continental Europe, even if your country is not in the Eurozone.

Steam is now more expensive than retail, good job Valve.

RtCW and ET nowadays (16 comments)
Posted by tzz @ 09:47 CST, 17 November 2008 - iMsg
So I didn't need my old IP any more and I could change my ADSL to one with fastpath while I wait for the FTTH to arrive. Since I have almost decent ping again, I thought I'd reinstall RtCW and play a bit.

Much to my surprise, none of the old OSP servers, like the Jolt one, are active nowadays and everybody is playing something called S4nDm0d (yes, with the numbers and capitalisation) on an old RtCW version.

But I really wanted to play, so I joined a few shrub servers just to find that they were either deathmatch ones or they were filled with idiots that didn't know how to play and complained when people tried to play the game and do objectives.

Pretty pissed off, I decided to give ET a try, but things weren't better at all. There's some new mod called No Quarter that adds all sorts of funky things like weapons, more levels, etc. Even worse, medics were limited in the servers I tried and it was impossible to get healed or revived because the ones that got to pick medics went all Rambo.

Anybody knows of any populated server with decent human beings and no weird mods? Preferably Wolf, but I don't mind playing ET.

No Quake in WCG, vote for SF4 (8 comments)
Posted by tzz @ 22:06 CDT, 1 November 2008 - iMsg
Like every year, just a few days before this year's big event the WCG organsation has published the poll where people can voice their opinion on the games that should be elected for next year's tournaments:

http://www.wcg.com/6th/poll/poll_PTT.asp

Among 21 PC FPS, some of them completely unknown, there's no Quake. Still, vote for Street Fighter IV so there are at least a couple decent games next year :)

Not that the results matter a lot, but I can see people voting SC4 en masse.

Carmack says so:

we've incorporated a lot of the small changes that the hardcore pro players like -- minor things like weapon tuning and air control and anti-lag, different things like that --

VX922 died, need suggestions (22 comments)
Posted by tzz @ 14:36 CDT, 30 May 2008 - iMsg
Like many people here, I bought a ViewSonic VX922 to make the transition from CRT to LCD.

It has worked great for more than two years and I love it more than I love my mother for letting me play games in a comfortable LCD, but this week it started doing weird things when changing inputs or resolutions (the screen goes black, light starts flashing and the only way to make it work is to unplug it for a few minutes). Beware VX922 owners, because I've read it's a pretty common problem with these displays and people are having loads of trouble even with the replacements sent by ViewSonic.

Unfortunately my warranty expired two months ago, so I have to look for an alternative. Obviously, I'm not going to buy a ViewSonic ever again, so right now I'm looking at other brands' offerings.

I want a 1920x1200 monitor with, at least, two digital inputs (DVI/HDMI), small input delay and, if possible, component and VGA inputs.

My first choice was the Dell 2408WFP, but it's expensive and it has lots of input delay (around 70 ms). My next option would be the BenQ FP241VW, but it also has about 36 ms of input delay and it's way over what I was expecting to pay.

Then I've looked at the Samsung 2493HM, which is relatively cheap at 400 euros and has really small input delay compared to the higher end models (at the cost of worse colors), but, dunno WTF were they thinking at Samsung, stretches 16:9 resolutions, which means I'd get stretched images from consoles.

So far I've looked a lot of monitors and none of them are satisfying enough, so that's why I'm asking you fellow nitpicking ESR users for advice.

Any suggestions?

Update: they called me today from ViewSonic saying they will replace my monitor. I already bought a BenQ G2400W and they say the don't know when will they have one VX922 in stock, so I think I'll keep the new one :P

phpTourney alternative? (6 comments)
Posted by tzz @ 12:43 CDT, 27 April 2008 - iMsg
What the title says. phpTourney is great, but has too many vulnerabilities (remote XSS among others, it doesn't even check what you input in text fields) and hasn't been updated in two years.

Looking for WCG videos (12 comments)
Posted by tzz @ 12:11 CST, 30 January 2008 - iMsg
Hi:

I'm looking for WCG videos, specially videos that showcase the crowd, the venue, the players or videos that mix some of them with in game action.

I've got the ones on the WCG site covered, but I'm asking because maybe some of you have more from your national qualifiers or know about places to find more.

Thanks in advance.

Note: CPL's, ESWC's and other tournament's videos are completely useless to me.
