Need advice on routine based play (22 comments)
Posted by sothis @ 09:18 CDT, 13 August 2013 - iMsg
Hi.

I've been dabbling a bit with my playstyle, in terms of watching demos, listening to streams of myself playing, and one thing that I keep getting back to is my predictability when in control.

On many maps, particularly T7 and Toxicity, I apparently have a specific routine when in control. Take T7 for example, imagine the situation:

1: I frag my opponent in MH room lower and t1e up the score to 2-2, say, 8 minutes in - My stack is around 100/50.
2: RA is up in 5, maybe 6 seconds. Mega is up and so I rush through teleport, jump the gap all the way to LG.
3: RA is up in 1, maybe 2 seconds but, without doubting myself a second, I rocket jump off doorway and doublejump and end up in RA room and I get plasma-smashed by the opponent who waited patiently, thinking I wouldn't dare attack if I didn't go to RA after the kill.
4: Score is 2-3 and keeps rising for my opponent as I get frustrated that my brainless rush didn't work, and then proceed to try and repeat it. By the time I get maybe one frag, the timer runs out and I lost the match.

This sort of scenario, and many others alike, happen to me so often I can't even imagine doing it any other way around, provided step 1 preceeds if we're talking T7.
I've tried my hardest to stop myself in doing this in many practice matches, and sure I've succeeded some times, but when it counts (such as when playing in faceit or 125fps) I continue to fail my way to a loss such as that.

Of course many other factors weigh in at many times. Among them are, of course, my opponent generally being better than me aimwise, or perhaps he times to the second - which is something I rarely ever do unless I'm having it way too easy in a match.

One of the main things I've been criticized for(to put it mildly), has been my brainless rushing that gains me the win in many occasions as it isn't predictable for many players, but the above is the lesser known fact for some of these critics.

So basically, aside from the obvious part of practicing over and over, any idea what can aid me in the course of getting rid of routine-based play-style?

Thanks

New sounds for QL? (24 comments)
Posted by sothis @ 09:54 CDT, 23 June 2013 - iMsg
So I was just watching the group match between dem0n and cooller and I started wondering how new or revamped/mixed sounds for QL would change the overall enjoyment of the gameplay.

Even though I have a strong preferance of the oldschool sounds, I can't help but think I'd enjoy quake more with a variety of sound improvements. Footsteps, ambience and item pickups maybe staying the same, but weapons (both the initial firing sound as well as the hits), doors and teleports.

I may just be rambling nonsense here but I could really do with some more bass'y depth in the railgun, less treble in the LG, and perhaps a completely revamped rocket blast.

Now, it might just be my bad headphones that leaves me aching for a thicker sound, although I have a pair of sennheisers in the domicile that give a much better representation of the sounds as they 'should be beard' that I get to borrow every now and then.

Anyone else feel like a little change on the sound department would improve/enhance the game?

I realize the recipe of the game as it is works, and changing would be unnecessary, basically defining the saying 'don't fix it if it isn't broken', and changing an already well known and rather important part of the game would possibly induce panic for the most part, as change generally makes people uneasy, but I'd just like to know if I'm the only one here.

So.. No quake at DH henceforth? (144 comments)
Posted by sothis @ 01:11 CST, 29 November 2012 - iMsg
A bird sang and basically told me this was confirmed by hellspawn. Can I get a double confirmation, because I don't want to check vods out and hear it. It'll crush me :<

What the actual fuck? What am I supposed to aim for now? :( I mean, sure the Face it, zowie and 125fps cups are awesome, but aspiring to something bigger basically sounds futile now. And it's not like it's not been a long time coming. The decline has been steady for some time now, but DH hosting Quake tournaments has been true for over a decade now. So sad to see it go. In fact the sad times for quake are really dawning upon me as of late. ESL, Cooller, av3k, DH.. Man..

Oh well, I guess I better prep for Reborn, even though chances are it won't get the player population needed to even get going anyway, seeing as twitch shooters aren't in style any more.

Sigh.

Bullies of Quake. (76 comments)
Posted by sothis @ 07:30 CDT, 2 May 2012 - iMsg
So we have williebobc, someone many of us know as a fun, respectable HoQ admin. Some of us also know him as a horrible quadrunner, sharply contested by own powerup ordeals, but thats another subject.
I, for one, would hate to see him go. There are many reasons for this. The primary one being that he's a cheerful fellow, but almost as importantly because it is based upon experiences with cheaters.
Most, if not all of us, have experienced cheaters in Quake Live, knowingly or unknowingly.
I say this without a single doubt because I'm quite sure there are more than enough of them out there. They know they can abuse it because of the lack of automated anti-cheating measures, and they know how to conceal it from the unkeen eye.

What I want to express in this column, is the concerns I have about players regrettably saying they are considering quitting the game.

So, quitting the game. You've asked yourself why you should do what they are practically enforcing on you, with their cheating, and yet in the end you come to the conclusion that the game is corrupted enough as it is.
There is no point in continuing to humor the cheaters that, undoubtedly, are a festering abscess on the face of this game.

This is not just any game. It's Quake. A game series that is supposedly dying, due to the lack of a consistent and 'large enough' playerbase.
A game series that is seemingly forlorn by the mainstream masses in favor of 'realistic' shooters, MMO's, and Angry Birds.. And some game involving crafting two stars, I think.

Quitting because of wallhackers and autoshooters and so on is in every way a cowardly move.
don't get me wrong here though, I firmly believe that leaving the trolls be, ignoring them completely is the way to go, but the last, ultimate step, which is that of quitting the game entirely, is a step too far.

I like to think of it this way:
Like back in the schoolyard where the bully(s) and the victim(s) are confronting; leaving the trolls be, ignoring them is good, making them rage more that no one wants to entertain their ego, or play seriously with them at all.
At any rate, this makes them feel even more bored and subsequently they either stop using the hacks entirely, quit the game themselves, or - worst case scenario, but quite possibly also the most common scenario - start using their cheats more obsessively in an effort to make others rage.
The latter makes them prone to being busted, which, in turn, gives us - the honest players - the opportunity to record them, report them, and have them banned. Also known in schoolyard terms as speaking with the adults.

With that said, on the other hand we have the situation where people start leaving the schoolyard(or school, whatever) giving ourselves no pleasure of playing with the other kids when the bully isn't around, because obviously the bully - cheater - is not and most definately can not be in every corner of the playground.
This ultimately gives the bullies the victory, because they successfully trolled everyone out, leaving the playground for themselves, in turn granting them the sense of power.

The saying goes "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely" and such is the case of the bullies/cheaters: When they are done ridding the game of honest players, all thats left is them hacking against each other like mad, and thus they have a place in which they can dwell.
The only positive thing that potentially COULD come out of this, is that these cheaters quit the game themselves entirely, and move on to fucking up the experience for others in some other game and what not.
At this point the honest players can return to play honestly once more. This however is the approach they possibly expect, as most of the cheaters seek their unfair victories excessively, and thus will return to fuck it up in the game again.

The best possible course of action, in my opinion, is to stay with the game, provided of course that you like the game as it is, excluding the occasional experiences with cheaters.

Have you found an obvious cheater while spectating? Aimbotting is the most obvious, but tracking through walls consistently, suggesting wallhacking, is somewhat obvious as well. Record it.
Send the demo to support@quakelive.com and have faith that they will look into it as soon as possible.

Are you playing against someone you deem suspicous but is not immediately obvious?
Don't accuse him. This can turn bad real fast. Instead, record a demo, talk to someone with editing or merely Wolfcam skills. ESR is a good place to start, but IRC on Quakenet (on channel #quakelive) has sufficient Wolfcam users that are willing to help, too.
Ask him to see if he can recognize some suspicious moments in the demo(s). Ask him for timestamped points and take a look at what he 1: re-recorded from your demo, or 2: captured to .avi, which he thought was suspicious himself.
Consider the demo or recording that this person made some more, and make sure you didn't merely act rashly because you got owned in the game.
If you're sure in your case, send the link or attach the demo/recording in an email to the above adress, have faith once again that they will look into it, and move on.
If you post the recording to youtube, it is probably best to not make the link public. Instead make it private, and when a good amount of time has passed (assuming they look at your email and deem it necessary to smash the banhammer) you can make it public.
This is because of the policy id software has on pointing players out in public.

Have you found a very highly suspicious player while spectating him? This could be concealed use of wallhacking, or even autoshooting with rail and so on, which both can be concealed in the hands of an "experienced" cheater.
Once again do not accuse, but rather record the demo, send it to the above email and move on.

To sum up in as few words as possible: Stay in the game for crying out loud. Don't let the cheaters get to you, and certainly do not turn to cheats yourself in an effort to get revenge. And most importantly, don't get paranoid.
It's easy to become paranoid with the amount of blatant cheaters out there, but don't let it get to you. Rather, enjoy the matches and /quit immediately if you are not enjoying your game.

Good day to you all.

I would pay cash.. (20 comments)
Posted by sothis @ 06:08 CDT, 1 May 2012 - iMsg
To have Limbus (TDM) and Sinister (Duel) added to Quake Live.
In fact I'd much rather pay a small sum for those, rather than older classics as they most likely probably hopefully, albeit with slim chance in spite of my otherwise optimistic thinking, will add more of them in time. I mean, Camper Crossings is a classic for cpma regulars, and it was added, so PQL is on the rise. Sort of. They don't have much to work with, but they're coming.

Anyway, who's with me?

SyncError is welcome to post account info so I can pass on the cash immediately.

Regarding cheaters and those who accuse (65 comments)
Posted by sothis @ 02:55 CDT, 18 October 2011 - iMsg
Before you start, I'd like to say, that, yes, I am very sorry for the confusing setup of this whole text. Everything is written in the order it came to me in the thoughtprocess of my answer in the DSM=ZeroQL journal by his fellow cheater Lithxiv.

I'd like to take a moment to mark upon the certain atrocious comments people flaunting against the unwillingly mix-ins of this whole Metsu scandal.

So, OK, as some of us have noticed, the account 'DSM' has gotten the ban, alas we have the cheating nuisance off our hands again. And thank goodness for that, if I may add. Trying to sneak around a ban like that just goes to show what methods some people go through to get back. Whether it's to go back to cheating, or go back with a wish to play legit, I don't know. It's anyone's guess really, but honestly I couldn't give less of a crap.

However it also re-acknowledges the fact that the QL team - more specifically SyncError as I would imagine - keeps an eye on ESR for this.

I can't help but shake my head when people say quake is dying because of the cheaters. It's probably different from each individual, more than certainly. Personally I have not felt any urge to quit Quake at all as I have a strong love for it, despite going from owning to losing depending on what team I am on in these various teamgames, or whether I get luckystreaks in the few duels I do.

BUT... What REALLY fucking GETS me is when people start getting sceptic of the people that are currently 'in metsu', without actually committing to it in any other way. Right now I am referring specifically to Juven1le, whom has proven his worth several times over, yet still getting voraciously, however subtly accused by certain people here.

I can not help but wonder what drives you to do this. I thought we established that proof is needed to make certain-beyond-doubt grounds for accusing people of cheating, much like we've seen with CSI:QL - and I dare you to start discussing them with me on this matter as we've seen 'confessions' coming up after the 'busts', proving exactly what everyone with a functional brain (to paraphrase myself) could see - Yet still people mindlessly accuse people of mingling with cheaters just because they are guilded up with them in a clan.

For goodness sake, strenx, v1um and zcn is in Metsu currently too, so what is up with you? Are you going to do another mindless assault on these legit players that help vivify the quake community in all ways they possibly can without ruining their "offline life" ?

Although I share the same opinion as some of you in regards to the person who invited DSM to Metsu, you can't just wander off into the endless explanations that 'Juven1le is the culprit, as he actively denies any connections to Metsu whatsoever, however that may sound to you disbelievers. I haven't seen a single game wherein Juven1le has played with the user DSM, where on the other hand I have seen fl4sh do so. I've seen gda, silencep, zrenjanindza(snake) play with him too. If anything, blame THEM for knowing and not doing shit about it, but don't blame Juven1le. I'm sick and tired of this shit but I will actively defend both him and everyone else that I'm beyond certain have nothing to do with that guy, and I will keep doing so in order to keep the idiocy coming from your mouths (hands? :P) from perplexing this whole matter and converting into an even bigger mess.

My hope is to spark a bit of dialogue that hopefully has more sense than what has been going on up to this point.

Moreover, if you're looking for a TL;DR edition of this, you won't get any.
