Quakeworld Oneday Tournaments (9 comments)
Posted by !phil @ 11:44 CDT, 2 April 2013 - iMsg
In the North American Quakeworld scene, United States of America/Russia B1aze is organizing one day duel tournaments. They are typically themed around a single map per day, and they happen once or twice or thrice a week.

The latest edition of any given week is accessible on quakephil.com/qwna and everyone from North America is welcome to join. We play on N.A. servers. Sometimes they are seeded, sometimes not so much, sometimes we have double eliminations, sometimes not. But one thing is always guaranteed: telefrags, bores, and good games!

Admins - if possible please make this into a proper poll

See here for the introduction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2GELZtJycc

Vote here (or on youtube by liking the respective comment) who you think will win the first round:

Enforcer vs Knight

It will most likely happen on Wednesday...

Remember: the format is two sets:

1 - Champion vs Champion (one enforcer vs one knight)

2 - Horde Battle (enforcers vs knights, such that sum of enforcer hp = sum of knight hp)

3 - Tie break format, not sure yet... Post ideas below! (Maybe horde battle on nightmare skill?)

Thunderdome is coming to its most pivotal matches! It all started 2 months ago, and has kept on schedule largely due to the tireless effort of head admin Russia VVD.

It has been a great tournament all the way up to div0, and it is really exciting to be able to win your division with this kind of tournament setup. I'm stoked to watch (and maybe broadcast) the grand finals!

Thunderdome round 1 has started! The deadline for all divisions is March 5, 23:59CET. It was hard work to seed everyone into the divisions, but master blaster (also known as Russia VVD) made sure that all the slaves did their jobs.

Spontaneous live streaming will take place around 2400-0400 CET (6pm-10pm est) if any games are happening at that time and I'm not otherwise predisposed. We may get a more official streaming schedule as the semis and finals start getting scheduled, but in the meantime follow my stream to get notified when it goes online.

Brackets:
* Div0 - 19 players
* Pro - 22 players
* Regular - 30 players
* Advanced Rookies - 28 players
* Rookies - 22 players

Thunderdome Starting Soon (17 comments)
Posted by !phil @ 21:23 CST, 25 February 2012 - iMsg
Quakeworld: Thunderdome has seeded the initial divisions and is accepting late sign-ups. Players are encouraged to notify admins of any corrections in case someone has been misplaced in a division. Each division is scheduled to have a double-elimination bracket, which will be drawn up by 27 Feb 23:59CET at which point the games will begin!

Currently we have 97 players from 24 different countries filling out 5 divisions:

* Div0
* Pro
* Regular
* Advanced Rookies
* Rookie

Elite duelers are especially encouraged to register, as currently we are missing some of the heavy hitters such as nitram, mawe, milton, kingpin, locust, lacsap, avenger, lakso, etc., and we need them to make a true "div0" division. Let them know about the tourney and convince them to sign up for thunderdome! There will be a high def stream covering the best matches whenever possible.

Greetings fellow Quakers!

Andréas, also known as "zingao" will be making teasers about a monthly quakeworld tournament project hosted in Europe (but open to all.) There will be cash prizes, although at this point it is not clear how much. Most indicators point to a playhem type of tournament idea, except not daily but monthly or perhaps weekly. A live stream is in the works to cover the project.

Quakeworld: Thunderdome (29 comments)
Posted by !phil @ 10:40 CST, 21 February 2012 - iMsg
Russia VVD has announced Thunderdome, a unique tournament for quakeworld, and I'm helping him host it, along with Sweden Adde, Russia Darkstorm and Ireland pleuraXeraphim!

The main difference from Duelmania, Ownage and Showdown is a multiple division system with double elimination brackets. The intent is to allow all players of all skills to have a chance to win, rather than be brutally stomped on by higher skill players. It also affords the higher skill players a true challenge in every single game, and a real spectacle from the first round to the finals.

There will be divisions ranging from "div 0" to "true rookie" and the final number of divisions will depend on the total signups. Registration is open until February 25th, 23:59 CET. Running around in clan arena is one thing; playing an official duel with your adrenaline blasting is another! Go sign up.

Behind the scenes in 4on4 (36 comments)

It is a really interesting look into how a 4on4 team-in-training operates and plays an entire game start to finish. If you're interested in quakeworld 4on4, check it out.

So you want to be a caster (40 comments)
Posted by !phil @ 09:22 CST, 19 November 2011 - iMsg
Casting is a big part of e-sports. If you do it right, its promoting your love of video games, whatever video game that might be, and introducing more people to something that you personally find highly entertaining. But if you do it wrong, best case scenario you won't have an audience and worst case scenario you'll do a disservice.

In my quest to become a better caster myself, I've identified six key things that I think are very important. They are characteristics that every top level caster has, and that many beginning casters lack - and would hugely benefit from improving them. So I'm going to share them with you.

1. Energy. You have to be able create excitement and genuine interest out of nothing, and to maintain that level for the entire cast. Some people do this naturally, they are the extreme extroverts. The rest of us have to do it consciously, until it becomes second nature. My prime example here is Nick "Tasteless" Plott. He's not constantly shouting: he will go there every now and then, but when he's not, he is honestly interested (even when half his mind is gone from casting for a day straight) in what is going on inside the game and entertains the viewer into watching the game along. He does it so well, you don't notice it - you're just enthralled in his cast. I think this is the biggest return-on-investment characteristic you can personally improve, because energy, when expended properly, can help a lot of the other stuff along. Lack of energy (monotone voice, being bored, etc) can hurt the most.

One up and coming caster who I've noticed has nice natural energy is adebisisc. If you're watching a cast and you think to yourself "I want to watch this guy cast again, I wonder what he will say next!" then that caster has succeded here.

2. Voice flavor. This is not something you can work on, its simply something you have to discover and exploit. My example here will be Marcus "djWheat" Graham. He has what could be considered a classic nasal nerd voice, but in fact it has become the classic djWheat voice - when you hear it you instantly know who is speaking. You might have a deep bassy voice, you might have a high pitched voice, you might have a funny accent, whatever. Whatever it is, understand it, exploit it. It adds flavor, and flavor is tasty. If you have some cool aspect to your voice and you're not using it, you're not getting the most out of yourself as a caster.

3. Diction and word usage. This one should be obvious. Its important to be able to speak fast enough (but not too fast) and to be able to rattle off the right words at the right time, all the right catch phrases. This is mostly a learned skill. Michael Goldberg of UFC fame is a great example here, but if you've seen some of the very first UFCs, you will see how he has evolved in this regard. Love him or hate him, you can't deny that he enunciates words very specifically and deliberately. (And of course, even he has funny gaffes, but because he's so good, the mistakes he makes are excused.) You shoulde note though that he is one short step away from going too far, the way some disk jockeys and weather forecastors do it, by over-exaggerating their enunciation and intonation. Don't do that, it sounds lame and cheesy. But don't mumble or re-use the same words over and over either.

4. Knowledge of the game. This should also be obvious. Play by play gets old and it gets old fast. Start introducing "because" into your play by play. Instead of "he picks up some health boxes and moves to red armor" its much more interesting to hear "he picks up some health boxes because his enemy is controlling the yellow armor and there's so much health here instead".

I believe even the most basic play by play should have bits and pieces of game theory sprinkled in. Casters like Artosis, Painuser, who are high level players are obvious examples, but you don't actually have to be a high level player in order to have a surprisingly deep knowledge of the game. In fact, any student of the game, even if physically unable to execute the theories, is still able to learn those theories and talk about them. And that adds richness (as long as you don't make it too long and boring) and immense depth to casting. And without it, it becomes just a boring train of "oh my god what a play!"

5. Meshing with the co-caster. Eventually you will be casting with someone else. The prime example here is Tastosis, the casting archon :) another is Joe Rogan and the aforementioned Mike Goldberg of UFC, they're really good together. MaximusBlack and NovaWar are another great team. Until you actually cast with someone, you will not know in detail what needs to be done in that unique scenario, but at the very least, you don't want it to be one caster doing his thing, and then waiting until the other caster is doing his thing. Or worse yet, when one caster is doing his solo play by play for a long time and the other caster can't even get a word on. It has to be a mesh. It has to be a conversation between the two, and that takes time getting comfortable with the other person. Call your co-caster by name. Talk to him/her about the game. Discuss what's going on. You can get away with just having a general discussion, but don't get too carried away aside - there's a game to be cast.

6. Technology. You need high quality video and high quality audio. You could have all of the above, but if your video and/or audio are low quality, you will be losing most of your audience. If you're lucky, then you are part of a company doing casting which has already figured this part out, but if you're not, you will have to make the setup yourself. It is becoming more consumer accessible every month (I've written an article on this, look around.) Then there's all kinds of production value stuff to be done, but this is optional, but if pulled off well it can really set apart a show. Having intros, outros, player introduction, map introductions, and other such doodads - produced not too amateurishly, of course - makes a big improvement.

So there you have it. Those are the six key things that, in my humble opinion, will improve any caster. Identify the weakest one and work on that first. If you don't, "you're killing e-sports" :)

P.S. Check out this link. It has a wealth of knowledge on this topic. (And, yes, it has the same title, but I swear I only learned of that blog/book after having written this column last night!)

That was probably the longest break we’ve taken yet. With some of us starting new jobs and starting school again, we’ve been insanely busy lifing lately. BUT WE’RE BACK! Wonko was originally supposed to be here for this one, but sounded the Quake alarm bringing Jehar and Quakephil to the rescue. It was a great show, bringing together many facets of the Quake community and giving a ton of information about whats going on at the moment.

Overall a great podcast, and we’re thinking of making this cast a separate show; a great way of reconvening every now and then to let everyone know what going on with other scenes.

High def first person shooter streaming (72 comments)

Its been a year, and I've edited this article with some updates. Look for "2012 update:" for those.

Here is my experience creating a high-definition live streaming set up for the purpose of streaming FPS games. What started as a brainstorm session has turned into an actual nerd DIY project, and I feel like I've accumulated enough knowledge to share. I've split it up into some sections: Rationale, Video, Streaming, Audio, and Lessons Learned.

I hope this is of use to you. If this article helps at least 1 person on the path of live streaming, then I think it has been a friday well spent writing it. :)

Slipgate Report #8 - Rikoll and nitram (7 comments)

This week (or this month) on Slipgate Report #8 United States of America QuakePhil and Denmark ParadokS welcome guests Sweden nitram and Norway Rikoll to talk about their recent duelmania encounter, their experiences so far and what's to come.

Rikoll is the current heir apparent to the supreme 1on1 crown in the QW scene, after Milton. Nuff said.

Nitram aka Valla aka Ningizzia aka the man of many names, he's one of the oldest breed of oldschool QWers, and has been playing since 1997. He's best known for his 4on4 achievements with many clans, including the elite clan fragomatic which has recently made a comeback. But he's made damage in 1on1 tournaments through-out the years also.

We talk about duelmania mostly, and about the various aspects of duel gameplay. We even mention ignition, a tournament geared towards newer players in quake.

We talk with Russia VVD about playing and coding Quake from a Russian perspective. Some of the show is in Russian, but I translate everything. Also the format is shorter - trying to keep it to 30 mins.

There are some awkward pauses when English becomes too difficult for our guest, but I think it is worth it to get an interesting point of view from one of the older and more experienced Quakers - both in the game and in the code.

VVD is an old school quaker who has contrinbuted to KTX (quakeworld's official tournament mod, akin to OSP for quake3) and EZQuake (quakeworld's official modern client) and even MVDSV (quakeworld's official server software) is an all-around FreeBSD nerd, as well as a top notch player (although he won't admit it)

Follow and cheer VVD on in duelmania! And heed his final words, which I may not have translated 100% - play quake for fun every now and then, don't worry about quitting it!

It matches our new name, too! What a coincidence! (Thanks to Matuka for making the old logo when we had the old name, too!)

Phrenic is into 4on4 (but also a sick dueller) and jj is a representative from clan blt, the clan that has the biggest balls right now, going from div2 to div1! We talk about EQL, the divisions, and eventually I steer the discussion towards duelmania :) Both tournaments are in their beginning stages!

Yeah, we had technical difficulties as usual, but at least I hope the audio didn't get interrupted too much. The video was laggy/choppy in parts, due mostly to my internet not cooperating. Those darn internets. The ending video in particular looked like complete and utter garbage, so go and watch the high-def video here!

Also check out Phrenic's videos (google for them) in particular here's one I like (youtube)

Worlds smallest violin playing for Quake (279 comments)
Posted by !phil @ 11:25 CDT, 31 August 2011 - iMsg
I don't usually write these rants (who the hell am I anyway?) but it has been brewing, and its a slow day, so here we go...

E-sports

E-sports is a fact. In the years past, it has had some excess hype, but at the current time of me writing this, E-sports is here to stay. Starcraft 2 stands out in particular right now, and in this write-up I will be comparing and contrasting Quake (the FPS I've been playing since 1999) and SC2 (the RTS that finally got me to play rts online)

As far as e-sports in general, others have written on the subject far better than I ever could: see Why I love pro gaming at PC gamer and Esports vs Sports at gameradvice for some good articles on the topic.

The take home message is - multiple generations have now grown up playing video games, and video games are a huge form of entertainment; also - humans love to fight. Put two and two together, and no matter how goofy "e-sports" might initially sound, you can't deny that competitive video games (and all the drama that entails) make for some great entertainment.

Starcraft 2

First let me fully mention Starcraft 2 and the real-time strategy genre: it has blown up huge in 2010, 2011, and is the driving force between the most entertaining E-sports broadcasts today. In the past when I had some free time, I would sit down and watch some quake demos (without any commentary of course) from a then-recent duel finals and derive a thrill from that. Now I find myself on friday nights (or monday morning, doesn't matter) switching my projector on and watching GSL code S with Tastosis (Also MLG, NASL, IEM, GSTL...)

We don't have this in Quake, and we never did. And we should. Starcraft 2 is the biggest success story E-sports has seen so far, and the Quake scene can emulate it and succeed as well. After all, Quake is not a direct competitor to SC2 as the genres are entirely different! Creativity is great, but plagiarism is faster :)

Quake

The current dilemma is that Quake FPS has great untapped potential, but at the present time is a bit of an "ugly duckling" of E-sports. (Not literally, all the modern quakes look high def as fuck!) So, I've identified the following two things that have to be emulated after SC2, if we want Quake to further exploit the potential of E-sports:

1) "Find game". The "Esport vs Sports" article linked above makes a compelling argument that, while meatspace sports have more of a non-participating audience, e-sports audience is actually comprised mostly of players. Still not getting it? If you want an audience, you have to have players!

I promised myself that before I published this blabalanche anywhere, I would give QuakeLive another chance (I haven't touched it since having various technical issues with the beta) and so I did. Or at least I tried - I couldn't get it to work. (Chrome not supported, then tried IE and got core extraction failed. GG.) Now, I know people are playing it, so I'm sure I can probably get it to work with some effort... but that's my point: New players shouldn't have to expend any kind of significant effort to start playing and start having fun. It bears repeating that SC2 handles this flawlessly. I've never, ever, had a problem finding a game with SC2 (actually, monobattles is buggy, but that's a custom 3rd party map anyway) Sure you could say that Quake Live is free, and SC2 is $60, and so you get what you pay for, but this is the wrong attitude to take. In reality, there is no reason why quake shouldn't be as easy as SC2, especially as far as the technical questions go. Bluntly put: the code is trivial.

So yeah, in SC2 becoming a player is easy, after a couple placement matches you get put into a league with like skilled players. You press a Single Button(tm) to find a game.

In Quake becoming a player is hard. Unless you have a couple friends you can play with for fun, your other option is to go on public servers, and they are a mess. You can find yourself playing with players light years ahead in every respect of the game. People get curb stomped, and people leave, and SC2 would be the same way if you got matched with guys from code S every time.

The solution is simple - and I'm going to engage in some pseudocode talk right now just to illustrate how simple this is - you maintain an id of everyone who plays (for example a community site like quakeworld.nu already has a database of player logins) and rank them by past performance. You do the ranking by monitoring the games they play. Elo ranking is the easiest to accomplish this, and the QW scene is actually working right now on implementing such a system. This doesn't require special browsers, this doesn't require core extractions (what the fuck?) all this requires is maybe 100 lines of PHP and a couple weeks of testing and development.

(Fun fact: when QW was being developed in the late 90's as a TCP port of Quake1, it actually did have an online "leader-board" (anyone remember MikeJ?) but it was scrapped because it was too visible to players and they became afraid to play someone who was ranked higher. This is solved easily by making the system transparent as SC2 does.)

In fact, SC2 isn't perfect in this regard either, in some ways it is too transparent. For example, I am still flabbergasted that you cannot search for both a 2v2 and a 3v3 simultaneously, so this is something that can be available in a custom search.

TL;DR: Quake need a "find game" button on a website or a game launcher. You click and wait, and it pairs you up with an evenly matched quake player. You have fun. They have fun. :) HOLY SIT YUO GUIZE I AM GENIOUSE. Ok, end pseudocode talk.

2) Personality. The entertainment value of SC2 is delivered by the players, the commentators, and in some degree by the community at large. But the first two are the most visible. The players' bodily presense is important - those of you who watch GSL will know what I mean when you remember the MC "thumbs down" or the finger wag or the various pre-game pump ups he does. Or Huk's trollface victory. Or the Idra interview even. Sure, not every player is a charismatic entertainer, but even the goofy dorks with gosu fingers have a human element to them that is always somehow entertaining (I recently saw this interview of an otherwise regular dude playing SC2, and went from not knowing who player X is to becoming a fan of player X. Go figure) The casters - an entity introduced to me by DjWheat back in the primordial Quake casting days - are also very important. Tastosis are my favorite example, they are masterful at filling idle time with witty banter, and they can make a show out of nothing, and then when the actual e-sports action kicks in, they are able to present and explain and even hype it and that adds greatly to the replay value.

And that's what this is about - putting on a show. We are already doing it in the game, but there are so many other aspects where it can be done! (And, for a change, its hard work...)

So in Quake we need physical presense, if only a little bit. No, I don't mean webcam shots of walter playing (although even that is better than nothing) But we do need to see these aimbots and trickjumper masters as a human being, and we do now, and its a big part of what has kept Quake alive, and we need to keep increasing the production values of this. Your lg is nothink on lan? Indeed. Improve on it: emulate SC2. Maybe you don't have to interview them after every game, but "gameface" shots have great entertaining value, and should be part of any quake production. Casters are actually the key. They are the voices, the embassadors to the masses. Anybody can cast (I've dabbled in it myself) but you also need the ability to make a show out of nothing, when you have dead time or whatever else. Just think a little bit - each of us knows someone who is fun to listen to, someone who can rattle on about anything and/or tell anecdotes masterfully. Give them a headset and teach them Quake :D

And of course player posts, community-created content, this is an important aspect, and something I think Quake has in spades.

TL;DR: Quake need more personality. More prozone players, more prozone casters, more entertainers. Find em, and teach them Quake!

3) There's more. Sponsors. Money prizes. Production studios for events (these can be one-man studios, and VODs are huge here for replay value, again. Being able to watch past events at your leisure is invaluable, right now we often have to choose between multiple live streams and miss half the awesome action. If there is one thing GSL ever got right, it is their VOD database. I never watch live, but the VODs are an inexhaustible supply of on-demand entertainment! Also SC2 has live streaming a-la twitch.tv/<insert your favorite starcraft player here> - FPS is actually a bit more demanding to stream and to have playable FPS at the same time, but the technology will improve and be more affordable. Idra's stream might get 1x,xxx live views, but then the VOD will get 1xx,xxx views!)

But yeah. Let's first work on 1) and 2)

Closing words.

Quake didn't use to be the ugly duckling. FPS wasn't always the bottom of E-sports. Recall some of the current SC2 teams: coL started its life as a counterstrike clan, their great rivalry with Team 3D there. Of course CheckSix, fnatic, SK, 4K, these all have roots in early 2000's FPS too (SK from 1990's Quake 1 with players like Kane, Hakeem, Timber... and 4K were one of the big Quake1 clans in the late 90s) My current favorite is EG, a huge powerhouse right now in the SC2 scene, and it also all started as a Quake one clan. The history is there. The spirits refuse to die. :)

Quake is Dead - EQL, mix strategies, DM (26 comments)
Posted by !phil @ 08:43 CDT, 29 August 2011 - iMsg
Listen in as I talk to Denmark ]SR[ParadokS, Sweden Carapace and Sweden Hooraytio about what's up in the scene. EQL is getting closer and closer, but we also talk about some newbie friendly stuff, like some fun beginner stratregies in mix/public 4on4 games :) (We also talk about DM - duelmania - a little bit, which has been dormant for years, but is now starting up again)

Cara is a really good 4on4 player now. He took a big break from quake and is now back.

Horatio has been around forever, and spends a lot of time helping the scene by running the EQL and trying to make everyone happy, which as we all know is so ez (not) :)

There's also a sweet intro thingy I made. Thanks to DDE ghosts as well as bps and Matuka for letting me use their stuff.

Quake is Dead - Dueling and 4on4 mixes (29 comments)

Listen in as I talk to Denmark ]SR[ParadokS, Norway Rikoll and Denmark EMbAh about quake dueling, 4on4 mixes, and some upcoming tournaments. There's even a comic strip somewhere in there :)

Rikoll is a relative new-comer who has been tearing through the duel tournaments (1st @ QHLan 13, 2nd at QHLan 14, 1st at Showdown 1 and 2!) and is also a fine 4on4 player.

EMbAh has been around a bit longer, and also plays quakelive as well.

Update: I had the wrong link, now fixed! Fast forward to 3:00 when the show really starts.

Quake Live Commentary (68 comments)
Posted by !phil @ 12:07 CDT, 29 June 2011 - iMsg
I wish to advertise my live video commentary page for quakeworld. It is different from most other commentary you may have seen because I am doing the commentary at the same time as I'm playing the game.

The intent is to show newbies (and/or players that are new to FPS) the thought process that goes on while someone is playing the game.

I'm still working on some technical aspects of capturing (using fraps locks me down to 120FPS, but perhaps I can use vdub with some tweaks to get unlocked FPS capturing) but I already have 30+ episodes ready, and I have gotten positive feedback, but I haven't been able to get too many views so I'm hoping to get some word out - so spread the word :) Even quakelive players and other players outside quakeworld have told me they learned something from these videos, so I hope you can too, and improve yourself in FPS :D

(I got this idea from kingscrusher chess live commentary, very entertaining; and then after I started I learned that some people do live commentary in SC2 also - psy, day9 I think, etc)

QHLAN14 in two days (70 comments)
Posted by !phil @ 10:36 CDT, 2 November 2010 - iMsg
QHLan 14 is around the corner, scheduled to kick off in less than 2 days on Nov 4th. QHLan is to QuakeWorld what ESWC is to Quake 3, or Wimbledon to Tennis :) The full player list is available, but I want to bring to your attention some of the biggest names to ever attend this LAN, making it potentially the biggest and baddest LAN tournament in the 14-year history history of QW.

All told there will be 200+ people at this LAN (which, by the way, is conducted in cooperation with the nonprofit hazard and does not have any commercial sponsors) and of those it will be about 100 hardcore quake players, from the super newb (me) to the super pro :) But, seriously, for every player mentioned above, at least 2 more players will be there who have honest chances to beat them.

I will be tweeting the action and any videos/pictures/interviews that I manage to smuggle across the border!

Challenge-TV.com, the age-old demo repository that was started in 2000 by dethkultur, Hoony, DonKing and Agent, has recently undergone a major face lift, update and upgrade. CH-TV is now graciously hosted by endpoint.nu and development is ongoing. Check out the work in progress on challenge-tv.com.

CH-TV caters to demos and replays of all kinds, with an extensive collection from all the Quakes, Enemy Territory, Broodwar and Starcraft, ZDaemon, Warsow, and more. Some of the new additions to the site include a customizable RSS feed and front page game preferences.
