QL Movie Making in 2021 (2 comments)
Posted by aiken @ 08:50 CST, 10 February 2021 - iMsg
So last Quake fragmovie I did in 2009 and it was Quake3 using Q3MME as toolset for rendering. I have a couple of demos saved with time marks of some frags worth sharing or at least for me to make a summary of my Quake Live journey, the movie I'm gonna launch in my old age to remember how was it to be a Quaker.

My question is what are the 2021 tools available to boost up and make most efficient workflow for clip rendering? I'm looking for a tool that let's me navigate on the demo to select beginning and end of video sequence and render it in some nice way. I know there was wolfcamql, is it still the thing to go for?

Btw. the movie I mentioned was T13 Clan Fragmovie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v57GHsuEfM4

Diabotical - esports direction? (11 comments)
Posted by aiken @ 05:26 CST, 3 March 2020 - iMsg
Which game mode is going to be chosen for esports competition? Is it going to be one of team modes or rather duel? Wipeout is much better than Clan Arena from what I watched but I don't think it will have any chance vs any modern team shooters as there's not enough space for tactical play. However for casual play it looks perfect.

I'm wondering how duel will look like and if it's going to be promoted to major focus of the game. It's good that game has team modes as it allows groups of friends to play together which is a must but like I said I don't see it succeeding spectator and it would most likely fail like QC team mode competitive attempts.

What are your thoughts?

Dude I think it is the final time to solve your visa issues. It's just crazy how much opportunities you lost by this. It's time to get polish citizenship. I know a few people from eastern countries who already applied for it and they have gates opened for the rest of the world.

Do it! I'm pretty sure Av3k will help you out with everything. It may take a couple of years at worst but it's better to start the process now.

QC arised after E3 - what now? (141 comments)

It's looking really good. Look at the steam charts:
http://steamcharts.com/app/611500#1m

I have idea that maybe we as experienced players shall stay in-active for some time to give noobs more space to let them play vs other noobs only. You know the past that it always end ups badly when people get rekt.

So if you agree with me try to avoid at least team modes and FFA.

Valve shall launch Team Fortress 3 in response to OW (11 comments)
Posted by aiken @ 11:14 CST, 14 November 2017 - iMsg
... and I bet it will happen in less than 2 years (at least the beta or announcement). I wouldn't be surprised if they are already working on this for quite some time.

It's natural step for Valve to be on the gaming market. There's millions of player base in OW who could be captured to TF3 concept. I guess they can base it on TF2 and probably capture a couple of things introduced by Blizzard.

This could be next big FPS game and it may have much more esportish potential than OW. What do you guys think?

Why there's no community matchmaking app for QL? (20 comments)
Posted by aiken @ 05:38 CDT, 6 September 2017 - iMsg
Did anyone try to implement it and found technical difficulties? Or just nobody cared to spent some time on it?

And as an app I mean something like FaceIT does for most popular games, where they calculate your rank and if you queue up for a duel game you get notification when your opponent is found. You both click Accept button and it launches QL and connects you to the server automatically.

QuakeJS - Quake3 with CPMA mod ported to Javascript (25 comments)
Posted by aiken @ 10:00 CDT, 1 August 2017 - iMsg
No launcher. No web browser plug-in. Working Quake3: CPMA port to web based environment is up and running. Notes from the author:
QuakeJS is a port of ioquake3 to JavaScript with the help of Emscripten.
This project started to demonstrate the feasibility of browser-based gaming, and what better way than with a classic game whose core gameplay revolves around the kind of responsive APIs that are available with HTML5 today.

Sacrafice one hero limit and symetric maps (11 comments)
Posted by aiken @ 06:03 CDT, 19 June 2017 - iMsg
What do you think about making one hero limit for Sacrifice? In my opinion it should help organizing people in public matches. So everyone can fulfill role best fitting character used. Let's say Anarki will most likely be soul carrier, Clutch being defender of totem, etc. You could respawn at any moment with different character if it's time to attack enemy's totem to get the soul.

Also the thing mentioned by 2GD that symmetric maps make much more sense for that game mode. Totem placement is fair for both teams. If they want to keep asymmetric then they should at least assign totems to teams in each round or swap it in following rounds after the first one to solve the issue of odd number of rounds to get a winner.

Woman vs man and ELO distribution in QL (25 comments)
Posted by aiken @ 17:58 CDT, 1 July 2016 - iMsg
I was wondering today how different women are from men in terms of intellectual competition. It's proven fact in stats of most of sport disciplines that physically women have natural disadvantage. Looking at running world records at different distances usually women records are at level of around 10% lower from men results. There might be higher difference in weight lifting though.

This explains why we run separate competition, but what with disciplines like chess, esport or other technical sports where most important factor is technique, accuracy, but not physical strength or endurance (e.g. shooting sports).

I found this interesting article about ELO distribution in man and woman chess players populations:
https://www.chess.com/blog/LionChessLtd/men-v...ays-better (TLDR: see ELO graphs)

I'm too lazy at the moment to read all text too to know of how many of the games were between two different sex. Men seems to be slightly better in average and on the top. Men graph ends at 2840 elo and women at 2680 and most of the space above 2500 is empty or below estimated gauss prediction line. So there's not many woman at the very top level compared to man.

There's not much to discuss about here, because these are just statistical facts. I want to ask general question if is there anyone having dump of database stats from QLRanks to plot such graphs for QL players population? I think it may be interesting, not for comparing man and woman but just itself since sex of players are unknown.

Also does anyone remember what was the max ELO ever achieved in QL? Was it rapha or evil?

QL future in community's hands (26 comments)
Posted by aiken @ 07:11 CDT, 29 October 2015 - iMsg
I had no time to install steam version yet but from what I read it seems that the game environment is simplified. I think it is a moment in QL lifetime when community shall takeover responsibility of keeping game in good shape.

We did it already in the past by providing solutions like QLRanks, Extra QL, userscripts, config/HUD editors. Now when all stats and whole web interface are gone most of the stuff won't work.

However it doesn't mean it's not possible to restore the same level of experience. If we organize we can make connected cloud of dedicated servers and implement stats collecting utility. When it's done and we can some solve variable in-game nick issue we will be able to track stats for every player and bring QLRanks back.

After that it's just one step to introduce matchmaking system on our own.

I opened the topic to open the discussion and gather ideas that I'm sure most of the QL related tools developers have. I want this thread to help us gather and cooperate to make QL better and live game we all love.

Be woman in the next life (75 comments)
Posted by aiken @ 08:39 CDT, 18 March 2014 - iMsg
Question A) If you had a chance to have another life, would you decide to change your gender?

Question B) For those who answer for A is negative. If you had a change to have another life as woman would you take it or die for ever?

I know it may be hard to say yes because at the moment you are man and having in mind that you gonna be fucked by other man feels gay. However you will be a girl with girl's mentality and other stuff so your thinking will be different. Also touching your tits won't make you happy. Take also in account that now you are probably young and you are not bored of your life, but this decision will be taken at age of 80-90 when your current life will be completed.

When you play single player game and decide to play it again you most likely pick different character (if there are any other). How does this apply to real life opportunity?

I'm also curious about female users opinion in other direction of change :).

Hall of shame (67 comments)
Posted by aiken @ 11:39 CST, 14 January 2014 - iMsg
I realized that there are players in our community that are so concerned about their stats so they abort the match if they start losing too much or if a result is bad for them in the last seconds.

It may happen only on private servers where the owner thinks that he's the boss and can do anything. In my opinion it is pure abuse and it needs to be punished publicly. This behavior shows no respect for opponents and it may bring unnecessary bad emotions when someone denies all the effort you put into game by a single command.

TLDR: whoever abort the match instead of forfeiting gets listed in this thread

Hall of Shame:
Greece hadrian - abort 2 times in a row (1st after ~3min, 2nd around ~8min) - I used to like playing with him, because we usually had very close and intense games.
France bd7 - abort around 5 seconds before the end

I'm curious if you experienced similar situations or other disrespect of your opponents. Feel free to extend the list with clarifications, so we can know who to watch out for.

Best Frag Contest - Idea (12 comments)
Posted by aiken @ 11:25 CDT, 25 October 2013 - iMsg
I have an idea to organize monthly Best Frag Contest.

How does it look?
1) every player can send one demo with time of an action/frag
2) the demo needs to be recored in the month of contest edition
- any gametype applies
- any type of action: frag, blooper, flag run
3) judges watch all submitted demos and pick up to 10 or 20 actions
4) these actions are taken into a short movie that is released after the submission period
5) the movie has advertisement of sponsors
6) now community voting begins
7) the best action is rewarded with prize money
- rewarding top3 frags may be considered
- rewarding random voter has also sense to get more attention of viewers

What's good about that idea?
- everyone has his moments in Quake Live, so for a tones of players it is the only chance to win something
- afaik it wasn't done yet in this community

What we need:
- movie maker to prepare frag video every month
- jury of 5 known people
- sponsor to get advertised and spent some cash (it doesn't need to be much, even 50$ for a winner may run the contest)

What do you think?

This movie features frags by clan Poland Tier ThirteeN, one of most active polish Quake 3 teams since the beginning of 2008. It consists of an intro, 4 different parts and an outro :
Part. 1 - Team DeathMatch : most frags made in official clan games
Part. 2 - Duel : frags made in duel games
Part. 3 - Moments : some funny and interesting moments we experienced during the game
Part. 4 - Mix : both duel and TDM frags including pickups

The three main soundtracks used are songs of Lamb of God, Soilwork and Korn. We hope that you will find it interesting to watch our movie. Enjoy!
