QCLauncher: Run QC Without Bethesda Launcher (20 comments)
Posted by syncore @ 19:46 CDT, 23 June 2017 - iMsg
Hello, everyone. A few weeks ago I made a small utility (QCLauncher) to quickly launch Quake Champions. I finally got around to uploading it yesterday. A few people on Discord tried it and were happy with it, so I decided to post it here. I mainly created it as a learning exercise, but perhaps it will be useful to someone:

Carmack sues ZeniMax for $22.5 million (2 comments)
Posted by syncore @ 23:12 CST, 9 March 2017 - iMsg
The feud between Oculus and ZeniMax Media is opening back up once again, this time with the CTO of Oculus, John Carmack, suing his former employer for earnings that he claims are still owed to him.

The suit is largely unrelated to the $6 billion trade secrets suit which ended last month with a $500 million judgment against Oculus. Instead Carmack is suing Zenimax Media for $22.5 million that he says has not been paid to him for the 2009 sale of his game studio, id Software, known for such pioneering video game classics as Doom and Quake.

The lawsuit reveals that ZeniMax Media paid $150 million for the game studio behind such pioneering video gaming classics as Doom and Quake.

The document details that Carmack was set to earn $45 million from the id acquisition. In 2011, Carmack converted half of that note into a half-million shares of ZeniMax common stock, but has yet to receive the other half of his earnings in cash or common stock from the company, despite formal requests being made.

Carmack stayed on at ZeniMax Media, a game publisher behind such titles as Skyrim, until late 2013 when his contract expired, at which point he joined Oculus VR as its CTO.

In the suit, reported first by Dallas News, Carmack claims ZeniMax Media has not paid the remaining sum due to, what the suit calls, “a series of allegations regarding claimed violations of Mr. Carmack’s Employment Agreement,” this assumedly relating to ZeniMax’s suit against Oculus regarding the theft of trade secrets.

ZeniMax, however, never brought charges of breach of contract against Carmack in that lawsuit, and Oculus was not found guilty for stealing trade secrets. The judgment was instead levied against Oculus and two of its founders for copyright infringement, false designation and the violation of Palmer Luckey’s NDA.

Carmack’s suit claims “sour grapes” on ZeniMax’s part in not paying back the money he says he is owed, something that has caused Carmack “serious injury” to the tune of more than $22.5 million.

Posted by syncore @ 22:47 CDT, 7 May 2016 - iMsg
Hello everyone. I made this site in order to view QL servers from the web for those times when you don't have access to Predath0r's Steam Server Browser or the in-game server browser. Hopefully it will be useful to someone:

Update QLRanks Elo from Quake Live (61 comments)
Posted by syncore @ 19:50 CDT, 29 March 2013 - iMsg
You can now update your QLRanks elo from Quake Live using the QLM bot, if you do not want to join #QLRanks and use !update on IRC or if the [QLRANKS] irc bot is offline.

Step 1: Add the player "QLM" to your QL friends list. The friend request will be accepted automatically.

Step 2: Send the message .update or .update PlayerName to QLM on Quake Live. You can use the chat box on the QL site or the console, or you can bind to a key. (The bind would be: bind x tell_buddy QLM .update)

Auto updates:
The QLM bot can also update your Elo when the map changes or when you disconnect from a duel, CTF, CA, TDM, or FFA server. To use this, send the message .autoupdate on to the QLM bot.

Hopefully this is helpful.

Update (September 28, 2014): Re-enabled .update and .autoupdate on the QLM bot.

Update (July 13, 2013): One-click elo updating for QLPrism users. See screenshot above.

Update (June 19, 2013): QLM bot can now auto-update FFA games

Update (Apr 10, 2013): QLM bot can now update/auto-update CTF games and for auto-update should no longer double update on map change and disconnect

QLM: Quake Live Messenger Bot (12 comments)
Posted by syncore @ 01:43 CST, 27 January 2013 - iMsg
tl;dr:
Message relay bot, can advertise duels, can send messages from in-game to IRC (automatically includes server info & elo) and IRC to in-game, you need to add the account QLM to your QL friends list, http://qlm.syncore.org - #qlmsg on irc.quakenet.org

I've been idling in a couple of Quakeworld channels on Quakenet (and occasionally playing QW) and I noticed that the QW community has a cool communications system known as ServeMe/QWNet ( link1 / link 2 / link 3 ). I'm sure some of you are familiar with it, but if not, basically what it does is relay messages between QW community IRC channels and to QW servers. QL is limited in its abilities compared to QW, but still I thought that it would be cool if Quake Live had something similar, so in my spare time over the past few days I put together a message relay system known as Quake Live Messenger (QLM). It was originally based on a half-assed version I did for the US pickup channel, but this one is better with fewer bugs.

Purpose: The purpose of the QLM bot is to make QL-related announcements, find players, request duels, organize games, send short messages. It is not to be used for spam; to reduce spam, players can currently only send 1 message every X minutes (currently 2 mins), and players may be banned by admins for abuse, etc.

In short, here's what it can do:

-- Advertise that you're looking for a duel (sends message with address of your current server & ELO information to all IRC channels and online bot users) (list of players is also on website here)

-- Send messages from QL website (chatbox) OR more importantly, from in-game (/tell_buddy) to multiple IRC channels or to a single channel as well as all other users who use the bot

-- Send messages from IRC to in-game players who also use the bot

-- Send a message from one IRC channel to all other channels that the bot is in

How to use:
Add the QL name QLM to your QL friends list. If the bot is online then your friend request will be accepted instantly. Visit the website to learn how to use (its super easy, I promise). Also, you can download a QL cfg that binds the commands to keys, which is easier than doing /tell_buddy QLM blah blah blah.

I added this bot to a few channels so far (we still have room for 17 more channels, so if you want the bot in your chan, let me know)

QLPrism: QL Launcher AUG 02, 2013 UPDATE (359 comments)
Posted by syncore @ 11:27 CDT, 13 August 2011 - iMsg
Hey guys, I put this package called QLPrism together for people who have been wanting to try out Mozilla's Prism and Quake Live but were unsure how to configure it, etc. This basically bundles Prism and QuakeLive with a few extra goodies in an all-in-one package. After installation, simply double click the icon on your desktop to play.

This could definitely be useful if you've been having problems with a browser like Chrome recently and/or you're too lazy to setup Prism. Or if you just want to try something different. It's a lot smoother on my system than Chrome or regular Firefox ever was. A lot of you guys on ESR probably already use Prism to play QL, so I suppose this was designed more with the newbies in mind. Available for Windows and Linux.

Latest version : v4.40 (August 02, 2013)

Official site, documentation, and download: http://www.qlprism.us/

QLPrism Screenshots can be seen at http://www.qlprism.us/

HELP! QLPrism crashes after every second game! -- To fix:

If you have an Nvidia graphics card, and you have this specific problem (able to load the game once, then when you quit, Prism crashes if you try to load the game again, so you must restart) try this:

Go to :

Nvidia control pannel ->
Manage 3d settings ->
Program Settings ->

And add an exception for quakelive.exe file in your "QLPrism\xul" folder

"Threaded Optimization" to OFF

This should solve the problem and does not negatively effect QuakeLive's 3d performance.

Brink as a QuakeCon game (52 comments)
Posted by syncore @ 15:30 CDT, 2 July 2011 - iMsg
As everyone knows by now, Brink will be at QuakeCon. This is a timeline for the month of June/early July of Brink's player base in image form collected from some posts on the Splash Damage Brink forums. Brink peaked at ~17,000 when it was released in the second week of May (not pictured). Now, you can see the results. Has anyone seen a game die so fast? This is pretty incredible.
