Monitor recommendations (63 comments)
Posted by MarzenGold @ 14:23 CDT, 29 August 2020 - iMsg
Yo peeps.

My 17 CRT died a few years ago and I'm jamming on a 60hz IPS.

Do the new 240hz TN's offer nice performance, or are we in the 'considering the shitty monitors' era forever?
How do they compete with CRT's in terms of ghosting/smoothness. Or should I continue my search for a 19inch CRT?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Replacement for MX310 (17 comments)
Posted by MarzenGold @ 06:32 CST, 18 November 2013 - iMsg
So I am retiring my 310 to my office PC and need a new gaming mouse.
I am still totally in love with the 310 shape after all these years, so I want something similar in shape/weight.

So far I am linking what I am seeing with the Steelseries mice in terms of shape/price. The Sensei and the Kana. But I am hesitant with the gloss and rubberised finishes. My MS office mouse has these gloss/rubber finishes and the gloss gets grimy and dirt sticks to the rubber which also tends to deteriorate over time. The finish also feel horrible in the sweaty South African summers.

So has anyone have any experience with some of the Sensei and Kana mice? Or recommend alternatives without these issues?

Recommend me a book #2 (118 comments)
Posted by MarzenGold @ 15:12 CDT, 26 September 2010 - iMsg
Alright. I seem to have enough non fiction books for now.

Need some recommendations for science fiction books. Looking for something in the line of the Mass Effect games, which I enjoyed and triggered me to get some new reading material, and is the best reference I can give, since I am new to this. Don't know what you call this genre specifically, but 'space opera', 'hard sci fi' or?

Don't mind a vast series. But if you say "Isaac Asimov, read them all", just please explain where to start or in what order I would enjoy reading xyz author's books. I am also not looking for comedy type book, like Hitchhikers guide. I want to get lost in outer space yo. :P

That is it.

Thanks <3

Update: Ordered the following:

Consider Phlebas - Ian Banks
Ordered Revelation Space - Alastair Reynolds
The Engines of God - Jack McDevitt

Added several others to wish list, which is now at over 70 books :(

Replacement for mx310? (18 comments)
Posted by MarzenGold @ 16:17 CDT, 5 October 2009 - iMsg
My mx310 seems to be dying on me :( I have had this mouse since it's been released and served me well until now(lost one feet and right button is starting to give problems).

I want mouse with similar shape/weight, a hassle free mouse(just want to plug the thing in and play). I don't give a shit about fancy drivers and configureability as long as it works.
I also use mouse4(one at thumb) quite a lot(+back for browsing).
I also hate ufo mice, those with retarded glowing lights and stuff.

Any suggestions?

Thanks <3

Popular Science books (45 comments)
Posted by MarzenGold @ 08:29 CST, 4 January 2009 - iMsg
OH HARO

Ive just finished my Second Popular Science book, The Blind Watchmaker - Dawkins, I have also read A Briefer History of Time - Hawking, a month or two ago. And I have received Climbing Mount Improbable - Dawkins for Christmas, which I am reading now, and bought The Ancestors Tale also by Dawkins. I don't think I would want to immediately go into the Ancestors Tale after Climbing Mount Improbable, because although fascinating I would like to read a bit broader, so to speak.

So far I have been recommended these books:

How The Mind Works - Steven Pinker
Genome - Matt Ridley
The Trouble With Physics - Smolin(iirc)

So any thoughts on these recommendations? Which popular science books that you would recommend?

This is a journal journal. For the 0.0001% that care :P

I just finished with uni, wrote my last exam paper 40mins ago. I can't believe I just registered an account at esr a couple of months after I have started at uni, it feels like yesterday!

Anyway, I have also found work a couple of months ago at university I am at, I am head web and webct admin for a department. Further I am starting with the final editing work on my book(A Basic Computer Education for Community Health Students and Practitioners), that will be published February next year in Nigeria.

Anyway I would also take this opportunity to introduce to you guys DJ Enferno to those who have not heard of him. He manages to remix raw tracks live while juggle over ten layers of effects, loops etc. Very impressive, my hero etc ;)

Going to EU, tips, recommendations (147 comments)
Posted by MarzenGold @ 06:22 CDT, 22 September 2008 - iMsg
Me and parents are planning a trip for about 3-4 weeks next year(end March).
My mother has some family in Holland which she would want to go visit for about a week.
The rest of the trip we are planning to visit the neighboring countries; Germany, Czech, Austria(maybe some more east), Switzerland, France, Belgium. Ideally we would want to finish the trip in .nl.

So if anyone can recommend what to do/see in these countries, what is cool, what is overrated etc, what beer/wine to drink/taste, tradition food and events, nightlife to experience. Ofc we have a much weaker currency than EU, so I don't want to waste all my money on one expensive night out :P

Thanks <3

Cant wait for the weekend! Going to be some awesome rugby. Australia vs England, New Zealand vs France, Scotland vs Argentina, SA vs Fiji. Its going to be insane good games all round.

Besides that I have made a map, 3 years ago when I just got UT2k3, so I made a map that I just played vs the bots(did not have adsl back then). It was my first and only shot at making a map, being a q3 fan I remade ztn3t1. Dunno if it has been done, dont know if I am allowed to do it? But I thought I would share it anyway. Its got a nice flow to it i think, but dont expect it to be anywhere near as good as the q3 version :) but i enjoyed it.

Just came back from the last night out with my brother for some time to come. It was rather short lived and we enjoyed the company of a crazy dutchman and a ruski. I have to get back to studying and he has to do his last packing before he moves to the other side of the country tomorrow. I have to admit I am rather emotional atm, reflecting on the things we did all these years together, be it sports, going out, enjoying a movie, fighting, getting stupidly drunk, supporting each other through tough times I probably could not have a better brother. The sudden change happened all to soon, even doing all those things together it was simply not enough. I know he won't disappear of the planet, but I will miss just walking through our house punching him just randomly on his shoulder or tackling him onto the couch just for no apparent reason, small things like that.

I wish him all the luck with his new job and that he will drive safely on his new VFR 800 and bring some good biltong and boerewors back home.

Sigh it just sucks getting older :( Wish i could redo the last 6 years of my life even if its all the same over again.

Thats me! :(

My 2 year contract expired at the largest gym in the Southern hemisphere. My job was to make sure everything goes according to plan at the aerobics classes. Make sure the music is pumping, the aerobic mic's at the right level, help the injured, open and close the halls and equipment etc etc.

What it really came down to is 'helping' 100's of the hottest girls you'll ever see. Some even offered to pay me, to do my job for me. :P

Worked there every week day for 1.5 - 3.75 hours a day, some early morning shifts to late Friday night shits, which where ftl.
Earned R25/per hour, its about 1.7 pounds a hour, might not be much in your country, but I can buy a six pack of beer with R25-30 and a large country breakfast for R15 or a bottle of whine. In other words, more than enough for a student here to live from.

Now it's all on the studies, still have 2-4 years to go. So now I have less cash to spend on the ladies and partying ("90% of my money I spend on women and drink, the rest I waste") and more time to study.

Bleh I feel a bit shit atm, ill just let the reality sink into me while I finish a beer or two and listen to some chilled isicathamiya.

Vensters `07 (8 comments)
Posted by MarzenGold @ 09:17 CST, 2 February 2007 - iMsg
Ah finally my home town(Stellenbosch_ZA) is back to normal. Students have returned and make up about 25% of our towns population of ~100k. Every year we have a week of madness before classes start. This includes a trolley race(the supermarket kind), "Vensters" and "Vlotte".

Vensters last night is with vlotte the most popular with visitors coming in from every corner of the country for this one mega party that stretches for 3 days.

Vensters is a night of shows that involves all first year students living in a res or privately. One male and one female res or private residential area team up the week to compete for the jool trophy.

Each year they have the same main theme(buddy) with different sub themes. And all money collected from sponsors, food/drink sales are put back into community development projects.

Anyway what it really comes down to, is a massive party for a good cause. All 15 local clubs where stacked and queues started forming before 10pm. Music played in the parking lots, thousands marched through the streets cheering, chanting, dancing, drinking.

I tried to not to consume much and stay in mid town till late, cause I had to work 5:40 am this morning and register at 8am. But with a blink of the eye my watched jumped to 3:00am and it was time to head home. Waking up like usual when things go this way was hard as hell. I set my cellphone alarm to play The Doors - Riders on the storm at full volume to wake me up, but instead I waked up, thought "man who is playing this cool music?" and rolled on to my other side only to wake up with a bang to the buzzer on my alarm clock.

Bleh I feel tired now, but the bank still needs to phone me, cause there is a big chance I will not get a student loan, which will mean gg studies :( .

Well here are a few pics of the shows themselves, if I manage to correctly upload them that is :P

riders on the storm... =P

I am back and still in one peace. Luckily no sharkie attacks this year! Well it was awesome being away on holiday again.
The park we stayed in was in a awesome condition, considering they had to remove 30 tons of sand and fix a lot of things in a short period of time.

After packing all my stuff, last minute as usual we set out with two cars, just as the sun was coming in over the Stellenbosch mountains. Driving through some of the most beautiful places in South Africa made me realize again how damn lucky I am to be in the position I am.
If anyone of you ever intend to visit South Africa, hire a car and drive the cape garden route. The South to east coast Knysna area is absolutely awesome. Beautiful scenery, perfect roads endless beaches.
Small pic out of car, on our way to Glentana

After setting up it was finally time to relax...
A quick visit to a local shopping mall, me and my bro got ourselves some el`cheapo fishing rods, bait etc. Now we where set. We paid a quick visit to the beach to test out our new equipment and with my very first cast I landed about a 80cm Sand Shark. My luck was depleted thereafter. After losing countless sinkers, and people around me pulling out some big ones I gave up and turned to body surfing.
Probably the most unpredictable beach ive been to. One day you can walk in on a sandbank for a hundred meters, the next you will struggle to get past 10 meters of water.
While not really a surfing/bodyboarding spot, the waves are excellent for body surfing even tho it can be scary taking a 10ft dumper :P
Being a bit concerned about sharks before leaving, as soon as my toes touched the water all fears where forgotten and focus was on catching the next best wave. The beach was only closed 3 times, due to the sharks getting to close to the swimming area. Helicopters make a pass over the beaches about once every hour or two to check for sharks and people that could be in trouble at unwatched areas. From what ive heard, sharks are in huge numbers behind the last set waves at any given time at that area. Its only when they breach that area, the lifeguards on the beach is signaled to call everyone out and close it till further notice.

Anyway me and my bro managed to spend a bit of much needed time together.

Take a long holiday... (10 comments)

Let you children play... :D

Well I am leaving till dec 29. Gonna be without a pc for some time ftw. I am going on a holiday for a few weeks. Staying at Glentana(check flickr) on the east coast of South Africa(near George where the Sevens rugby is played atm). Ive spoken to some marine biologist, some consider it to be the most dangerous beach in South Africa, due to the strong currents and the presence of the white sharks. The strong currents is the main culprit here, if you cant swim you cant risk going beyond waist height, even if you are a good swimmer you still at a risk when you go beyond. I have provincial colours for swimming and ive had about three times where I was on the brink of giving up, trying to get out. I was saved all three times by a turn in current and not by the lifesavers, cause of my ego. *meh*

Ill will be camping there with the parents and my bro. I hope to catch some quality time with my older brother(24), since he got engaged we never hung out anymore(about a year ago), which I miss alot. He helped me alot to where I am today and we always did sports(swimming/biathlon/cricket), 'kuiering' (hangin out + chilling + drinking + talking shit until the wii hours of the morning), work, etc together.

Anyway looks like heavy rain is coming in until Monday at least.
Glentana has been under heavy floods in winter(june july) and the only cafe(just finished) was washed away. Hopefully the steep cliffs are stable. :P

I am gonna do alot of fishing from the shore and, bodyboard/surf during they day, also play some touch rugby and cricket on the wide open beach. Just relax, have a braai (bbq) in the evenings and play some poker with matches as 'money'. :P

Well I wanted to write a lot better journal, but ive just come back from a local pub, when I kuiered for the last time with my friends before ill see them again just before new years.
"im deunk" springs to the mind here. :P

Well its been a good year. Not as good as last year tho and now im gonna miss the cpl finale'. Ive made some awesome friends tho even one or two through irc, (you know who you are).

Well a big thank to the esr staff, eg 240! And to some of the users for making me laugh even after I know ive failed a test :P And offcourse FU Lobster and all that shit :D, its been great.

Just wanna say FU smurfs on the mweb q3 servers. Yes you fucken maggots :D

Also thanks for all the supporters of wAr and my fellow clan members. You guys rock, even tho you can talk more rubbish than I can :D, even when 'im deunk'.
Other than that, shouts to plut(your sets rock dude), Lavazza, voidzilla, my dutch bitch, the HSG and afm clans(ure the best, and coollest dudes online!) my fellow team mates, the ever fighting horse loving girls in #war@shadowfire (love you both <3 :D) and all the other peeps I forgot to mention :((. That includes my friends not bothered with irc etc.

See you all in 2007, maybe ill upload a few pics our awesome beaches. But until then enjoy the hollies every one. Go easy, have fun and live life to the fullest!
