Over at Cadred, Richard Lewis reviews the South Korean Starcraft betting scandal that has rocked e-sports. The article is a highly researched and brilliantly written piece for those of us in the West who know a little about Starcraft, but may not be aware of the betting scandal which has hit Korean esports recently.
Obligatory excerpt:
"At a little before two o’clock in the afternoon the site news.naver.com broke a story that would send shockwaves not only round the country, but around the world. It alleged that it had uncovered details of an illegal gambling ring that was fixing the outcome of high profile Starcraft matches to buck the odds and earn significant profits. It also alleged that unnamed notable players had been involved with the scam, as well as key members of their organisations."

It was only recently that esports saw one of its busiest weekends as events across all of Europe took place at the same time. As esports continues to expand it can be hard to keep track of what is happening when, even for the most well informed of enthusiasts.
With this in mind Heaven Media have launched Esports Calendar, a website dedicated to keeping track of all the events taking place across the globe, from when and where right down to the details such as prize money and where to sign-up.
The idea behind the site is simple - provide a means for esports enthusiasts and tournament organisers to be able to see what events are happening and at what dates and times. We hope that this is something the wider community will be able to use effectively and will help improve the understanding and communication within the esports scene.
The site comes with a filter facility so users can quickly search for events and tournaments relating to specific games. There is also a user submissions option enabling everyone to draw attention to events happening in their part of the world that might otherwise have been missed.
Heaven Media are committed to getting the best out of the site's functionality and content. For that we will need feedback from the users and wider community. If you can think of any improvements that can be made then simply leave your thoughts as comments to this announcement.
To see the site for yourself first hand head over to

A few days ago, I finally completed a book writing project that had been in the works for over a year. The book is entitled "
So you want to be a shoutcaster?" and covers most aspects of commentating on videogames, from setting up at home and casting on audio, right through to the more complicated stuff which happens at lan events.
With the recent activity in the shoutcasting world being a little flat and not many new faces coming through, now seemed to be the perfect time to try and help people do something they may have thought about, but feared to try. Hopefully the mini book can help people get on the right road to getting quality shoutcasting out there from more people. After all, its a very small world.
The book goes through a wide range of things to consider, including advice, suggestions and practical solutions to some problems. It covers many aspects that perhaps are a little more subtle but equally important too.
Ok, so you made it this far, you are intrigued or mad or both at the thought of shouting down a microphone and being able to be heard by potentially millions of people. Ok, so perhaps not millions, at least not right away, but you have an idea that you might be pretty good at this shoutcasting thing. After all, you can talk a donkey to death and you love your game, but what next?
You can view the book in its entirety on
theshoutcaster.co.uk and a full downloadable PDF version should be ready before Christmas.

UKeSA, launched in late 2008 with the goal of unifying the UK esports scene in multiple games and platforms and offering up prize money via their official leagues, announced over 20 games for their first season yesterday.
The glaring omission was a duelling game, but luckily UKeSA have offered the community a chance to prove that they should add one. Ideally they will add a version of Quake 3, until Quake Live is ready to go and you can help ensure that Quake and a dueller has a chance to be part of the first season.
Cadred.org has an official poll on the site here :
http://www.cadred.org/Forums/Poll/48756/
Simply sign up to the site (sorry, its the only way you can vote) and cast your vote in a positive light. We will be passing the results to UKeSA over the weekend.

If I held a tournament in Europe for Quake Live in around 3 months from now, what kind of prize money would it need to attract the top 32 players in the world?
Also, can you, between you list the top 32 players playing quake live right now in this thread?

No, thats not a misprint, we at Cadred.org really did review what some are claiming to be the first ever piece of hardware that can control your game without using a mouse or keyboard and just using neural impulses.
The Neural Impulse Actuator has been released by OCZ, the same people who for many years have made great memory, but now they have turned their creative hands to something a little stranger and slightly more ambitious.
Obligatory cut piece from said review follows...
"The instructions tell me that despite my apprehension of sticking these things on my forehead I wont need to shave any hair in order for the contact points to be good, though it does recommend using some of my “favourite lotion” as this sometimes improves signal conductivity greatly. After applying a large scotch to my forehead, I realised the lotion it talked about was possibly not of the alcoholic kind and more likely some form of skin cream."

A fair few pictures from the shgOpen 2007 in Copenhagen this previous weekend just gone. I took a few pics and although there were no 1v1 tournies of any note, I have posted the pics here anyway.
The pics are mainly of CS 1.6, Cod2 and ET teams with the odd shot of the event itself.
Havent had time to go through them and comment them all, but I will try and find some time later.
