Conan the Barbarian OST (26 comments)
Posted by KitesAreFun @ 00:07 CDT, 10 October 2014 - iMsg
I submit that Conan the Barbarian has possibly the greatest soundtrack to a movie ever.

Anybody else?

Funeral Pyre is void of a theme, but its texture... like the soundtrack... is sublime. Btw, did I ever mention the word "sublime" is faggotry manifested? Well it is... but moving forward...

Yeah... it's sublime. The whole fucking goddamned soundtrack... chex it!

Perhaps a dumb question, but that is how I see a LoL vs a Quakeworld type of argument.

Just a few quick comments on my music purchases. On avg I buy about one CD a week.

Best CD for 2013 (released in 2012 ) is probably Parallax 2: Future Sequence, recorded by Between the Buried and Me. Mostly referred to as BTBAM.

Haken takes the best prog CD of 2013 with ease. The Mountain is incredible, if not difficult. Difficult in that the singer is so weird at first one is convinced Haken must suck. They don't. Give it time brahs.

From here on out... unless you know math and economics, your politics - such as Global Warming - are about as meaningless as the size or your cock!

But seriously. I love David. He is an incredible thinker. Check him out!

Prediction Markets to balance games? (No comments)

Has anybody read that in a particular case a Prediction Market has been implemented in a company to actually balance a multiplayer game such as HOTS?

If so, please point me to that article.

Prediction Markets could also be implemented in a game mod which is struggling with in-game balance.

Meshuggah, drums, and your Mom (bitches) (85 comments)
Posted by KitesAreFun @ 04:19 CDT, 1 September 2012 - iMsg
What's up you hapless noobs?!

My earlier - and private - post sums up my drunken thoughts perfectly:

Thinking on it, you can't play drums from a rhythmical perspective once the beat gets too complicated (see above). Every 16th note onwards is like a new movie, and the part should be - and almost needs to be - memorized, tit for tat, as if it was a movie. Troy Wright is like a drumming God, and I suspect he tackled this song as most drummers do. Then he failed. The mind, by default, can't grasp what needs to be done. So for me, what's cool about the 2:40 part is that a guitar player might be more apt to play it, than a drummer. By the way 2:40 is easy, it's when you add in the cymbal splashes, then it gets almost impossible.

Listen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQtzzlB849c

Further, I was thinking... first we have Misha, and I said....
When your guitar player can do this on drums (Periphery):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRUSFGw9gIk

Then you know the fucker lives, breathes and sleeps music.

"Here i am behind the kit, yes i know im not very good, but thats why i play guitar in the band haha! Regardless i still absolutely love playing, and Matt is nice enough to let me jam on his kit (or else he's fired of course!)"

I had a point to this post; then I forgot. Clever assholes will claim this is an excuse. Wiser people will know that shit happens.

Love this song:

Championship Bloodlines (20 comments)
Posted by KitesAreFun @ 04:02 CDT, 5 July 2011 - iMsg
I haven't been around for awhile, and the search function isn't quite working, so... here goes...

So I've been kind of interested in the shit genre that is arena-based PVP. A technical name exists for this genre but that name escapes me for the moment.

I'm been getting older. I play about six games of SC2 a week if I'm lucky. So I was looking for something intuitive. Something, easy to pick up and play, yet hard to master.

So I've been toying with the idea of trying LoL, HoN or DotA. Something happened during my studies!

I researched all said games. I have watched VODs of high-level matches. Almost immediately I was turned off by the length of any one match: 40 min and longer. Even LoL - the supposed "n00b" game had 40 min matches in the final of Dreamhack.

Who the hell has time to watch porn, and play 40min matches? Not me.

It just so happened that I ran across a little game called: Championship Bloodlines. A commentator on a Gamasutra opinion piece was pimping this game as a superior alternative to LoL.

I just tried it. One word captures my thoughts: Perfect. Just what I need. The controls are basically Quake. WASD, with skills being activated by RMB, LMB, Q, E, R and F (as defaults). Nice!

Likewise, matches are fast, short and to the point. There are a few game modes but the bulk of the game was designed for 3v3 TDM. You kill. If you kill faster than your opponent, you win. An entire match (best of ten?) lasts maybe ten minutes. This may suit others just as well as it suits me.

So I go on youtube to check some matches out and I was almost LoLing when I hear 2GD was doing the commentary. What? That dude is at some level involved in the development of this game? Hmmm interesting and amusing.

As of now, I can't really comment as to the competitiveness of the game seeing as how I'm so new. I can attest I'm skeptical of the entire genre, but most criticism (as usual) should and probably can be discarded outright. I just wanted to give a heads up to those who want to try a new arena-based PVP game without all the ball scratching that usually goes along with it. As a long time Quake player, I felt others may enjoy this game for its intuitiveness and simplicity. My fear is that this game could get old pretty fast. Players, on avg, like leveling or progression of some kind. Does Bloodlines have any of that going on? I don't know. But they should, n00bs love that shit.

I bought the $30 dollar package. Unfortunately the game has micro-transactions. I can't attest to what you get "for free" after you initially install the game.

In short: I really want that community to grow. It's in my nature to "pimp" games here from time to time. Whether they are $1 dollar indie games, or $30 dollar PVP games.

Anybody play Record of Lodoss War for the Dreamcast? Amazing fucking game. God I love that game.

So here's what I dig and maybe someone can suggest a few free titles:

Here are some games I like:

Diablo 2 is good, but as as good as Sacred.
Titan Quest was decent, but not as good as Diablo 2.

I love the feeling of item whoring and/or getting better. Finding swords. Getting uniques, whatever. Story is not so important. Tons of weapons and customization is the important part. I like to solo and do not like being required to GROUP with more than a few peeps.

So I've stumbled upon a couple options:

Download:

Runescape
Mythos
Perfect World

BUY:

The entire Guild Wars series
or
Sacred 2

I'd suggest you all go check it out. James Cameron does make do on a "leap" in CGI here. The scope of the movie, and the World that is created is something to see.

Political nuts will get emotional and be turned off. The movie is seasoned in a "going green" and a humanities message.

Be that as it may, and despite my own personal small quibbles... this movie is pure ambition - ambition realized to technical perfection.

It sets a new bar, that's for sure.

SC and DM Duel > All sports (131 comments)

I know it's easy to joke about Esports. But for me personally... it's some of the best shit to watch for me, and this includes ALL Sports.

If things go my way down the road, and I have a few extra dollars sitting around, I'll be starting a new World Series, but don't quote me. Having lost my mind last weekend, I think that's a good thing, raging on Chance. It means I'm excited, emotionally invested, and a little nuts :)

Like I said, don't quote me. But if I had to pick some games, here would be the obvious ones:

- CPM
- Starcraft or Starcraft 2
- Quake Live or CQ3 (CQ3 would be the obvious choice for now)

A pay structure would have to be greater. The two big games would look like this (Total 50,000):

1st: 8,000
2nd: 6,500
3rd: 5,000
4th: 3,000
5th: 1,500
6th: 1,000

The third game would be 1/2 of the above 25,000, roughly 12,500 to work with (50,000 + 12,500 = 62,500).

Add in a shit ton of administrative details, and there ya go :)

I'm just curious how many Esreality forum readers feel the same way? Some of these Games can equal (if not better) all the sports one finds in Highschool: Baseball, Wrestling, Soccer, Football, Basketball etc.

So we'll see. How would the rest of you do this, if you had the power? I'm omitting a lot of other ideas, because nothing is set, and won't be for a few years, but I plan on using CPM (if such there be) and SC for sure.

I may take out Cq3 for SFHD.

Now granted I am a HUGE fan of Boxing and the UFC. Those come a little closer (live) but they are not as consistently good.

First, the link:

http://www.youtube.com/user/XonaGames#p/a/u/0/XqcrKunPKFs

It's not Ikaruga (what is?) but I've been buying Indie like a madman. I love to support the Indie market, especially when the developer actually has put in the time and effort to make the game great, but lacking in "art" and/or "graphics".

"Snake360" is a good example of what I'm talking about. The looks are pretty 1980s but the developer put in the time and tweaking where it counts: gameplay. Automatic buy in my book.

On to Duality. Check it out. If you've got a 360, just buy the damn thing. Support these fuckers - well, if you like the game.

I've been annoyed about a few great games going indie, with no love from the majority whatsoever. But then some worthless pile-o-shit comes down the pipes, and the idiots go bonkers and buy thousands of copies. Grrrr Halfbrick Rocket Racing being a perfect example of a fine game selling like dogshit:

Anyways, just my opinion. I'm pimping Duality, and doing so proudly!!!

I've run out of room and patience just bitching at the absolutely horrendous XNA Review websites.

How to better a the Quake Bible (11 comments)
Posted by KitesAreFun @ 13:43 CDT, 12 October 2009 - iMsg
This is for players contemplating creating some kind of tutorial in how to play some mode in Quake Live. I've seen various tutorials on movement etc. But nothing that really breaks down the mentality of a duel, to give one example.

Forget the words. Create a youtube vid with one lone demo. Talk the new player through every single moment, pausing as long as necessary for the explanation.

For example: The first spawn. Talk about spawns. Where you spawned. Where he might have spawned. What you're thinking. The importance of spawns. How they can dictate a match.

What's your motivation? Where are you going? Why? Where is the enemey? Why is the enemy there? etc. etc. etc.

The thing could be damn well 45 minutes, but I think it's better than a bunch of words.

In some sense, I think TooGood already does this in a much less informative way, during one of his streams.

Hold a map contest for Duel Maps (which has been suggested earlier in some forum update or something). Let the community map for ID Software. Unless there is some technical detail which makes things of this sort difficult (besides the web contracts which would be required before the contest), you'll have five new maps in three months, easy.

This should have been done ages ago. Now we're on the heels of a new Quake Live Europe and NA tournament, and nobody will want to learn new maps. We'll push the new maps for the next time then.

Throw some good money out there, and they will come. What is the hold up?

Looking for more types of game in this genre. One perfect example of this type of game is Laser Squad Nemesis:

This is a different execution of the turn based formula. Where each player actually has a real turn, does there actions watches them, and then it's the next players turn.

WC3 vs ALL minus Starcraft (86 comments)
Posted by KitesAreFun @ 03:33 CDT, 11 July 2009 - iMsg
I'll make this simple. Since we know Starcraft IS the greatest RTS (don't we?!) I'd like to hear opinions on WC3. How does it fare vs other RTS games as a competitive platform? Let me break down an introductory list:

Dawn of War 1 or 2?
Company of Heroes?
Supreme Commander?
Kohan 2?
Rise of Legends?
Command and Conquer?
Armies of Exigo?
Age of Empires III?

Armies of Exigo was an utterly fantastic game in my opinion and TOTALLY over-looked. Nothing original, but just a strong RTS product with wonderful gameplay.

We all know the criticisms of WC3. Big lumps of players just going from place to place with little macro. Stupid concepts like "upkeep" and POP limits that even make palsied tards LOL. The bad concept of heroes. The list goes on and on...

But, despite all that... it's still here. People are still playing the game, and a lot of them. Why? Is it just because it's a Blizzard game that was slapped together with at least some semblance of game play? Or maybe it's something else?

How does it compare and why does it still bare?

TDM vs CTF (183 comments)

I'm posting this in QL because I'm currently playing QL (coming from WSW and CPMA). <----- I know, I blame the divorce (joke)

CTF or TDM

Which is the "deeper" game, and why? Having little experience in one, and zero in the other... I'd like to see a few opinions.

My question is in general. Take VQ3 if you have to. Change spawn times around - whatever it takes to qualify YOUR personal idealization of the mode(s).

Ideally what is the superior competitive game type?

Three Cheers for Quake Live!!! (25 comments)
Posted by KitesAreFun @ 15:25 CDT, 28 April 2009 - iMsg
Something has puzzled me since I've returned to this site from a long lay-off. It seems to me there is a negative bias looming in the background when it comes to anything Quake Live. Why?

The package of Quake Live is about as good as a solution for the Quake community as I can possibly imagine. The developers have a certain degree of freedom which allows "listening" and "testing" from some of the best players in the community. This is key. That they contracted arQon is just another example that they are really willing to try. What are the fruits of this labor?

I can't be exactly sure, and I'm omitting many things but in short: they're balancing the game "properly." Specifics? I can't be exactly sure but it seems the Railgun is now at 80, the LG is now toned back a bit (5,6,7?) and the movement is a bit faster (at least initially), as well as the shotty having a bit more power.

(Please inform me if I am misinformed)

In my opinion BECAUSE of those little balance tweaks, the game already has a better foundation than VQuake 3. Where is the hate coming from? Seriously? You get an ENTIRE FREE GAME AND COMMUNITY for nothing. An improvement. The foundations of VQ3 have been improved upon in the balancing areas. The things that FINALLY got changed - in retrospect - are the hardest to change.

Auto-updating in-your-browser playing is on display, so that any n00b can jump on board. An entire community awaits thousands of players.

Now my guess is that most of the hate might be coming from the lack of competitive features. Am I right? I will vehemently defend the balance changes, so we are left with fickle little ho's, yapping and crying about one specific competitive feature set or another, and almost bringing down the game - in their own eyes - because of this.

Aren't these features coming? Yes, I believe they are. At a price? I think so. So what? The singular point of control is with ID but it just makes things so much easier for everybody else.

No game is perfect, but in my opinion you'd have to be one depressed, angry and non-sexed bastard to start bitching about this wonderful product that is Quake Live.

No game is beyond criticism, but GIVE criticism. "THIS GAME IS THE SUCKS... CAN'T START MY OWN SERVER..." To the people that talk like this, I say: I did your GF last night. You like them apples?

Quake Live is a wonderful solution for a resurgence of Quake play and a correction of the flaws from the past. The competitive features are coming, and in my estimation the core gameplay of THIS version of Quake, is by far the best that has come from ID.

I'm glad some of the U.S players seem to like Quake Live. Chance and Rapha are chief among them (I think).

Three Cheers for Quake Live. And for those thinking I'm trolling read this for any comments:

Zach being accused of trolling:

I don't know what you mean by "trolling."

Having a sense of humor by no means excludes the fact that I've perceived a negative bias (which may be incorrect) of Quake Live, and I'm dumbfounded at the perceived hate, when VQ3 is shaft and rail broken.

There is also a question of consensus. What is it here? I want to know. I want to know why. THAT is a conversation to have. That is the conversation I want to have with ALL people that call this a troll job.

Tell me what you think of Quake Live. Shift the focus.

As for this post, it's a balancing act. With so much "bad" stuff, I figured I'd throw in my two cents (with attempts at humor), and so I did. Trolling? When does something seize becoming a troll job, and START becoming an actual opinion?

I was intellectually honest, and I gave my opinion. If this is a troll job, so be it.

Everybody should give this game a go. The game is simplicity itself. Three buttons: "left", "right" and "jump".

It's a platformer with speed as the goal. Check it out.

(if this has already been mentioned, my apologies)

Edit: (funny walk-through of a level)
