...ruined due to those GOD DAMN VUVUZELAS, you heard it here first. I seriously don't know why they were embraced as the symbol of football in south africa... sigh.

But other than that - took a drive through cape town last night, LOVE the atmosphere and the way the whole country has come together to try and pull this off for the next month... I haven't felt this sort of unity as a nation since '94. But I know in a month's time when everyone leaves we'll all just go straight back to hating each other.

Part 2:

Watched the opening game for SA in a pub, atmosphere was really amazing... Even today, everywhere you go, you hear a vuvuzela, and tbh I really don't mind those ones, it's a constant reminder of the world cup and it'll only be for the next month. I even heard from friends who went to see a game that it's not that bad inside the stadium.. It's just the constant droning that really pisses me off on TV. But oh well.

Liked SA's game, think we showed some potential, loved the goal, though i guess mexico was the better side. Looking forward to Mexico vs France. ATM I'm trying to find tickets wherever I can so I'm probably going to pay a scalper... oh well.

Kind of cheesy electro vibe. not sure which genre exactly it fits into.
more to come, quite likely. Thus named because the main theme started out as a ripoff of Electric Wizard's dunwich.

Testing netcode (56 comments)

I was going to write an article about how to use perpendicular planes and simple distance algebra to implement perfect cylindrical hitboxes... but I was pre-empted by the quakelive team implementing it... damn

Instead, here is a perfect way to test how accurate the netcode/hitboxes are for railguns:
bind mouse1 "+attack;screenshotjpeg"

This actually causes another screenshot to be taken when you release m1, through which you can tell if the shot was a hit or not (crosshairpulse and the like)

Next week: How the "backwards reconciliation" netcode strategy ruins nuance by keeping client worlds out of sync.

South Africa gets Quake Live servers (27 comments)
Posted by raithza @ 07:14 CST, 2 November 2009 - iMsg
This morning, South African Quake Live servers went online after an effort was made by the community to find a host. This comes in time for South Africa Shase to get some practice in before he goes to compete at Dreamhack at the end of November.

Special thanks goes to South Africa Kradenko and IS Gaming for hosting the servers, and of course to id for making the game, and ttimo for his kind&speedy co-operation in getting servers up.

Quake 3 vs Quake Live, Dota vs HoN (46 comments)
Posted by raithza @ 02:18 CDT, 9 October 2009 - iMsg
I think we can all recall the excitement when John made the initial announcement for what was then called Quake Zero. A free, browser based, updated version of Q3? What could be better! Much time has passed since, Quake Zero got renamed to Quake Live, closed beta came and went and we have Quake Live in as 'stable' a state as we can expect to see it for the foreseeable future of the project, minus minor tweaks and fixes.

As this happened, a company called S2 announced a similar venture: they will be creating an updated version of the other game I play, Dota, called Heroes of Newerth. HoN attempts to improve on pretty much all the same facets of dota as QL is attempting to improve on Q3: an easier and improved way of joining games, a cloud-based approach to replace the private server based approach of the previous generation, stats tracking, and matchmaking (although this has not been implemented in HoN to the same extent as in QuakeLive).

Despite the similar goals of the two projects, they do differ in a few important aspects: HoN is a complete standalone executable, compared to QuakeLive's browser based approach, HoN is not made by the original developers of either warcraft 3 or Dota, and HoN is not free. The largest difference between the two seems to be that HoN has received overall positive reviews from Dota players, and has already seen a large part of dota's massive playerbase migrate over willingly, whereas the Quake 3 playerbase has been more-or-less forced to migrate over, and has done so with the standard amount of quake-player whine.

I find it perplexing that the response to the two games have been so different when the end net result for both have been (at least to me, perceivably) the same. I have since begun to take a closer look at both games, to determine what the major factors were that seperated HoN's good reception from QL's mediocre one.

The first, and IMO largest difference between the two is HoN's standalone approach compared to Quake Live's browser based approach. I work as a developer myself, in a largely data-driven business environment, working with standalone legacy Delphi applications. About two years ago, we hired a 'web guru' who took a look at our system, made a quick demo in a week or two's time, showed it to our CEO and said that our entire legacy system can be replaced by a web-driven interface in 6 months to a year.

Naturally, our upper-level management was enthralled by this idea - the basic demo had been done in no time at all, the new interface would be slick, easily updatable, and easily accessible. To cut a long story short, two years have gone by. The web system has gone from being 90% to 92% complete the past year. Our 'web guru' himself decided that it was not a good idea in the first place, and is now campaigning for a .net-based standalone application approach to resolve the same problem as the web-based approach.

I think the same thing happened at id: someone managed to wrap quake3.exe in a browser plugin ("there are one or two small issues, but this is a brilliant proof of concept and I'm sure we'll be able to iron out those without any trouble"), showed it to the bosses who loved the idea, and id went the browser based route. However, developing and maintaining a complex web application is tiring, gruesome development work. The common 90/10 project paradox is exaggerated for web based work, and besides that it is horrible work that few like to do. I think id grossly underestimated the amount of work the web and data portion of the project would entail, and I believe this is responsible for the slow progress and sparse updates we have had as of yet.

Compare this to S2's approach: they have complete control over their interface. The initial bit was more work, I'm sure, but since then any change or minor tweak has been much easier, compared to having to hack every single change to work on what amounts to 3 different virtual machines for the web-based approach. The experience of using the interface is smoother as well. You can access the same stats views, buddy lists, irc-style chats and all the rest in game, in the same format as you would between games. All this adds to a very smooth game experience, rather than the slightly-disjointed QL experience. I think this was a mistake on iD's part, and one that they will correct if there ever is a Quake 5.

Another key difference is how faithful either game is to their predecessor: HoN, while being extremely similar gameplay wise, differs greatly in look and feel. I think the greater the difference between a game and the followup, the better. When a game is as similar as Quake Live is to Quake 3 (or CSS is to 1.6, or Q4 is to Q3...) the experienced fans tend to focus on the small things that are lacking from the update rather than the limited amount of new features. HoN has this 'wow, new game!' factor which keeps it interesting and exciting enough while the dev's iron over the small bits of trouble that Icefrog and Blizzard have had years to take care of. On the other hand, when you started up quakelive for the first time, you saw quake 3, except without brighskins, timeouts, locking teams, and all the other missing features. This has made the community focus on the negative alot more than the positive for Quake Live.

On the community front, S2 has been alot more open and communicative with the HoN community than iD has been with the Quake Live community. However, due to the nature of Dota and it's players it is easier to communicate with them. You can let a bunch of Dota forum regulars loose on /b/ and they will organize themselves into different sections, with mods and everything, within weeks. Quake forum regulars would have the opposite effect on an organized forum (cough esr cough). Still, there is no sense of abandonment on the HoN forums which you can sometimes find on ESR or the QL forums - the community is always informed on what S2 are working on, what bugs they are aware of, and any controversial thread will have a few in-depth replies by a S2 developer. I do not mean to deride Sync for the job that he has been doing, however S2 have been a lot more motivated and active than iD have been in this regard.

The last big difference is the frequency and size of updates on either side. S2 have been releasing massive patches just about every 2 weeks, almost always improving on the data structure, interface, gameplay/balance and content of the game. iD have been releasing sparse, scant updates, and although they have implemented 95% of the things the community has been bitching and moaning about, all updates seem to have been met by a sense of "is that all?". Here again, S2 have the advantage of not having to deal with pedantic web development, and I believe they have a larger, more motivated team due to having a set income from people pre-ordering the game, rather than a risky ad-based revenue stream.

In the end I have a lot of respect for what both projects have done. Co-ordinating a cloud based system with a master server as seamlessly as either have done it is not as easy as all the players seem to take for granted. Have id failed with quakelive? I don't think so. The product as it is today is very good. It is unfair to compare their progress with S2's larger team, who seem to have gone all-in on the HoN project. I do think there are a lot of lessons for id to learn from this project, and I just hope they can carry them forward to the next Quake, for the true revival of deathmatch.

Icefrog to lead dev team at Valve (24 comments)
Posted by raithza @ 02:58 CDT, 6 October 2009 - iMsg
From Icefrog's blog:

I have some really awesome news I'd like to share with you guys. I am now leading a team at Valve! I finally have all the resources needed to do some very exciting stuff that you guys will love. I look forward to revealing more specific details when the time is right.

My goal and top priority in the future is to solve the surrounding issues that affect the DotA experience in order to allow it to reach new heights. Addressing these issues will enable us to further enjoy aspects of DotA such as the gameplay, mechanics, and in-game feel that currently work well and ought to be maintained. As I've said many times in the past and especially after today's developments, I am very excited about DotA's future!

Woah.... big news for anyone who plays dota. First of all it's nice to see another modder get a job for his efforts. Secondly, lol@anyone who's prepurchased hon :P Where Icefrog goes, the dota community follows.

Discuss

(also, i'm planning to write an article on dota/hon vs q3/ql... soon as we get some serv0rs down here so i can do an actual comparison...)

Politics... (8 comments)
Posted by raithza @ 08:38 CDT, 20 May 2009 - iMsg
Crash course in SA politics:

The country is governed almost exclusively by the ANC (Nelson Mandela's party, now controlled by Jacob Zuma) except for the Western Cape (where I live), which was won by the DA, whose leader is a white woman called Helen Zille. The ANC is not quite happy with this and have attacked her at every available opportunity - most (i think almost all?) of her cabinet are males - the ANC has responded by calling her chauvinist, and saying that her cabinet are her "boyfriends and concubines" with whom she sleeps around.

(at this point this link may be interesting: http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&c...899C435756 )

Obviously there has been some backlash, you can't just go claiming that a public person is having sex with everyone. The ANC has changed their statement to saying that 'sleeping around does not imply having sex' - or something to that effect. A radio presenter has contacted a spokesperson for the ANC (might be ANCYL, the 'youth league') to ask for further definition of their term "sleeping around". Comedy gold ensues:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBbmd1EcnmQ

Further interesting note: Zille commented (after being accused of this the first time) that Zuma is endangering his wives (he has 3 of them iirc) by having unprotected sex with people he KNOWS to be infected with HIV (this is a well admitted fact: he was accused of rape by one of these women, he admitted to having sex with the woman, and said he took a shower after so that he would not be infected, hence the millions of 'showers cure aids' jokes). The ANCYL responded by threating Zille with militant action and threatning to render the western cape 'ungovernable'.

Moral of the story? HOW THE FUCK ARE SOUTH AFRICANS SUPPOSED TO DEAL WITH THIS CRAP WITHOUT EVEN A QL SERVER. QL SERVERS IN SA, NOW. PLEASE. FUCK.

Because Quake Live has no servers near where I live, I haven't downloaded it yet (I get one gig of international bandwidth a month and I'm not using up half of that to watch demos and play with 300 ping), and I only watch the odd video of it, but I'm curious about the state of the game - how is it panning out? Is skill matching working now more or less? Is the netcode playable? How is the weapon balance working out? Are any of the new maps playable? What about the web interface, is it better or at least as useable as the Q3-style server browser interface (probably not)? what about duel detective, is it working? and how is the training&placement match now? What about the general feel of the game, is it more like VQ3 or CQ3? What about server activity, are there any new players or just the same players as Q3? I'm sure most of ESR will be in the higher tiers, but are there any noobs playing the game, and has QL managed to get some old OSP era players to return? I have high hopes for QL but the only barometers I have are the idiots on the QL forums and the whine threads on ESR.

I wish we could get some SA servers but it seems unlikely. Maybe after poland, russia, the other 40 US states, the UK, antarctica, ethiopia, south america and the moon we have a chance but no SA quakers are playing QL, for the same reasons I'm not so ID won't be seeing a demand :< you spoiled foreign bastards...

Razer's response to FD 'mishap' (15 comments)
Posted by raithza @ 02:17 CST, 26 February 2009 - iMsg
Like many of you, I also decided to troll Razer re the walter/kgb FD incident. I got this reply today:

We appreciate your feedback in regards to the Frag Dominant Q3 tournament. While Razer is the title sponsor for this event, we are not the decision makers in regards to match rulings. Instead, these decisions are made by members of the Frag Dominant Quake 3 Cup Staff appointed by Frag Dominant and the tournament organizers. At the time of the vote for disqualification of team DaFoneMen (a vote that passed 4 to 2), one of the six admin seats was held by a Razer employee, Evan “Razer|Nomadic” Bradshaw. Mr. Bradshaw also participated in the tournament as a competitor.

We understand that Mr. Bradshaw’s participation in the tournament could be viewed as a conflict of interest with the voting process we will support any decision the Frag Dominant Quake 3 Cup Staff comes to regarding the disqualification of DaFoneMen and Mr. Bradshaw’s vote in this matter. All final game rulings are left up to the discretion of the Frag Dominant Quake 3 Cup Staff and tournament administrators without any recommendations or input from Razer.

We are proud to be a part of this tournament and have the utmost faith that that Frag Dominant Quake 3 Cup Staff will continue to run a well organized, fair, and professional event. Any further questions about the decisions in the tournament should be directed towards the Frag Dominant Tournament Staff.

SAN FRANCISCO--In his keynote session for the Casual Games Summit 2008, PlayFirst CEO John Welch talked about "The Promise of Casual Games"--the "promise" being that the once scoffed-at genre will soon eclipse hard-core gaming as nongamers flock to it.

I think yes, but not for the main gaming demographic (i.e. 'us').

This has probably been thought of before, but wouldn't it be nice if you could have a built in item timer when watching a game? There was a lot of talk about making quake more spectator friendly a while a go (the infamous 'clap' button), but something as simple as this would help a lot.

Progaming going mainstream (25 comments)
Posted by raithza @ 18:38 CST, 13 January 2007 - iMsg
The whole severity issue got me thinking about how being a fan of gaming would change if it become more popular and mainstream. And the more I think about it the more I think it wouldn't neccessarily be good for us, the 'first' fans.

I mean, look at what we have at the moment: I doubt whether the level of play would go up spectacularly if the player pool increased, the best pro's are already doing it near full time anyway. At best the number of top players would increase.

We get to watch the matches we want, when we want, with shoutcast commentary (mostly), for free. If we have a suggestion, we can make a nice post on promode.org (sometimes), and get whatever we want fixed, if He agrees with it. Hell, every now and then you even get a pro player to respond to a question, directly, or someone like Angel from cpl, if you post very nicely on cpl's forums.

I just don't see how that would be possible if the fanbase was about (say) 10 times bigger than it is now. Every possible channel or forum would be flooded with people that, in general know a lot less than the average troll on ESReality. We'd probably have to start listening to commercials on shoutcasts, a lot, and have our GTV obscured by them as well. MNaybe even start with Pay Per View's, or something like that.

Thoughts?

Make your girlfriend play quake (52 comments)
Posted by raithza @ 08:03 CST, 26 November 2006 - iMsg
This made me lol a lot, so I thought I'd put it up, being the [+]whore that i am. All credit is due to Whitecloud though.

If it works lemme know.

How to Get Your Girlfriend to Play Quake 3

It’s what every gamer wants to know. Instead of having to take your headphones off constantly to hear her nagging, you could have a built in training dummy. Besides it’s much easier to get her to give you head while you play Quake if she doesn’t despise the game.

Ok enough joking! I’m completely serious about this. Totally unprovoked, say this to her: “I know I play this game a lot, and I was wondering if maybe I could get you to play. That way we could do something together, and I could talk with you about what I see going on during the games. It would be a great way to get some interactive quality time in. We’d be like a pilot and co-pilot kind of team.”  Then tell her it’s not like any other game there is. Then tell her why you enjoy playing it and how you have so much control over the game with the mouse. And go on from there.

Start her playing against bots only for at least a few weeks. Internet lag and players who dominate can make games against people unenjoyable.

Constantly let her know how much you like just watching her play. It really is fun to watch.

Remember: Any good boyfriend times two or three items for her while she plays. You get practice too.

Turn the graphics and sound details up a little bit. And make her a .cfg file that has the detail up.

Bind a few funny chat keys for her. People will start to reply back to her. All ladies love to chat.

Give her a woman’s alias so people will talk to her.

Bind a key to toggle her alias. In case she gets harassed she can change her name to a manly name like Sepultura or something.

It helps a lot if you take turns with her every five or ten minutes. It keeps it exciting, doesn’t tire her out, and doesn’t make her bored if you want to play.

How to cure her motion sickness
• Get her warmed up before she gets in front of the computer. Some physical activity helps. If she’s been up and around recently it shouldn’t overwhelm her. Also, she needs to be a little bit motivated to get frags or else, on a deep mental level, she won’t want to accept all the visuals. They will be too much for her eyes to keep up with, and this is what causes most of the sickness. She kind of has to be a little bit eager to see around each next corner.
• Make sure she doesn’t try to play cold after not playing for a few days.
• Show her that it doesn’t matter if she can perceive the screen in three dimensions. And move the mouse around carelessly after you say that. Thinking of it two dimensionally is just fine.
• Make sure the sensitivity is very low.
• Make sure you set these settings for her (and for you too):
cg_bobroll 0
cg_bobpitch 0
cg_bobup 0
cg_runroll 0
cg_runpitch 0
They steady the screen.
• Have her play the same maps a lot. Familiar maps don’t cause nearly as much sickness. Give her map walk-throughs before she plays a new map. Move the mouse slowly and steadily when you do.
• It’s easier on her dizziness if she plays in games with only a few people.
• Get her to stop playing before she shows any signs of eye strain or frustration.

DM's unpopularity (16 comments)
Posted by raithza @ 07:03 CST, 19 November 2006 - iMsg
I used to play alot of CS back in the day. DM, clangames, pickups everything. I wasn't the best but i wasn't too bad either, until the guy on the floor above me challenged me to a game of quake. I thought I was quite allright at quake, I can remember we played a 1v1 on DM17 (the only map I knew lol) and he completely raped me.

This intrigued me. Although he wasa quite noob by my standards today, I couldn't believe that someone could be that skilled. So I started playing Q3. I still play the occasional CS game, even a pickup once in a while, but for the most part I'm over it. I just figured tat people who play it, and are skilled at it, like the teamplay aspect of it.

Untill the other day I discovered ET. Wow, that game rocks. It's like Quake and CS mixed with some objectives thrown in, and a lot of fun soon as you get the hang of it. It just got me thinking, why would anybody still want to play CS? I can understand that DM gaming isn't for anybody, but I mean really, name one thing CS has over ET?

After thinking over it for a while, I reached my conclusion. A games popularity hasn't got to do with how much fun it is or anything, it's 90% how easy it is to pick up. Look at CS, any monkey that can hold a mouse and a keyboard can score a couple of kills on their first day playing CS. Even with ET you can get lucky, although you have to figure out stuff like 'classes' and revives and objectives which just seems to me to be too much for the average CS player (at least those playing on our uni's servers).

Even though CS has more to offer than just randomly running around shooting people (i.e. deathmatch), those deathmatch games give the complete noob a chance to learn the game, learn the maps, weapons, and basic combat tactics of the game, before that person moves on, to pickups or whatever. ET does this as well, but because the first day's learning curve is steeper, people lose interested. Quake (whether it's vq3, cpm, qw or warsow) is at the far end of the spectrum. I mean try playing with the default config. It's impossible. Even the 'noobier' modes of play (whether it be a random CTF, FFA or CA) are not only hard to find, but real hard, because people are good at it. There is no RNG that will give you kills, no teammates to revive you (50 times) if you keep dying.

So what's my point? If DM games are to survive, the people who make (and play) them will have to figure out a way to make it more accessible. Most people do not even want to read a help file or two, let alone a how-to guide on playing the game, so that's out. We need to make it easy for fresh blood to get going. I dont know what or how, but for warsow for example, a ready made config, with a half life 1 hazard course style tutorial on movement, weapon basics (i.e. remember to switch weapons often etc) may help. If we can get new players to at least stick for a week or two, and get used to the game before going back to a random noob campfest, we'll see growth.

what do you think?

Life is boring (67 comments)

Sigh... why is everything so repetitive... Getting tired of everything, go to see a movie, no matter what I've seen it 100 times before (same predictable plot every time), actors and setting is just different. Meet new people and they're just the same as people I know, or just a mixture of some stereotypes of seen a million times before, just different names/faces. Play a new game, it's still me with a gun, the gun is tracking or projectile or melee or hitscan, sigh, smoke new pot, same high as always, get drunk same feeling as always, listen to new music, same riffs and melodies and bridges and movements just in different orders. See new places, same buildings just in different places.

Everything is just a permutation of the same elements that make up everything else. Yawn.

Mouseaccel or no mouseaccel? (88 comments)
Posted by raithza @ 03:38 CDT, 29 September 2006 - iMsg
Hmm... I've been experimenting with different sensitivities recently, and what's interesting to me is people's different philosophies on how much maccel/sens to use. just about everybody plays with low sens, how low differs from person to person, but watch some vq3 demo's and you can clearly see the accel there, watch cpm and accel's almost always missing. Don't really know about CS/warsow players.

What do you guys play with? and why use accel/no accel? I'm using very little (0.1) accel, just to ease movement and 180 turns (i play both vq3 and cpm, but mostly cpm)

The difference between VQ3 and CPM (214 comments)
Posted by raithza @ 05:35 CDT, 9 September 2006 - iMsg
Well, cpl chose vq3, nobody was really surprised but a lot of people were dissapointed, including me. In the ensuing flamewars a lot has been said either way for which gameplay mode is better, or which should (have) been accepted for profesional play. I just thought I'd like to give my 2 cents on the subject as well :). I'm no pro, I used to play a bit of OSP but never really got too good at it when I discovered old promode in osp, and then later I heard of CPMA's bots, which actually got me to download the mod, and I was completely sold 5 minutes later.

The first thing that attracted me was the speed: instant weapon switching and faster movement. But as I got to know the mod a bit better I started liking the subtle changes in tactics and strategy even more.

Most vq3 players say that cpm is all aim and movement, no strategy and no tactics, but I believe this is mostly due to not knowing cpm well, and not being used to the speed of it. Remember, no tactical element is present in VQ3 and missing in cpm - in fact I believe more are added due to varying armor protection rates, less ammo, and map layouts, generally. The reason people believe CPM is less tactical is because the player has significantly less time to make a decision - if he takes too long, his opponent may have an opportunity to bunny away, maybe get a teleporter, or find some health, more so than tends to be the case with VQ3. Go watch a CPM demo and play it back at 0.75 timescale - it's actually amazing how much it resembles VQ3 then, it gives you some time to figure out what the player is thinking.

CPM also has a better game flow to me - the initial jousting for dominance, followed by the dominant (or 'up') player hunting the down player. How well you are able to predict your opponent's actions, and aim, determines how much you score while you are dominant. How well you time items and avoid damage determines how long you have control over the map. The down player always has to do something great to wrest control of the map from his opponent, usually by out-ninja'ing an item from him, or scoring a couple of good hits, forcing him to settle for weaker items to recuperate. CPM is only a spawnrapefest if the one player is much better than the other, and in fact the better I get at CPM the more interesting I'm finding being down in a match, it really tests your ingenuity and creativity to take control back. Being up is of course brilliant, my favourite is scoring a frag, standing dead still and waiting for the spawn sound, then trying to figure out where he is, where he's going, where is the best spot to intercept and what is the fastest/best way to get there, preferably with an item en route.

VQ3 players are rarely forced to actively hunt down their opponent, unless they are behind by a significant margin. VQ3 strategy usually solely revolves around items - just tank yourself, maybe hit a rail here or there to get a frag, and then avoid your enemy. The maps are large enough, and your opponent is slow enough that you can avoid him completely for minutes. While it's sometimes interesting to watch someone trying to outwit a hiding opponent, I dislike the hit-and-run-and-hide circle that play tends to get stuck in. Vq3 also tends to have an dominant player/underdog situation sometimes, but due to the size of the maps, the down player can usually avoid the other long enough to find weapons/armor, and then the game boils down again to who gets the next lucky rail combo.

I never felt that the weapons in VQ3 were unbalanced, until I really got into CPM gameplay. Rocket prediction is one of my favourite aspects of quake, but to me the hitscan weapons in VQ3 are just way overpowered. it's really hard to survive two straight rails. If he sees you first, and is able to just get some LG on you, there is really nothing you can do. From what I've seen it's just too hard to counter a person with exceptionally strong LG/Rail. While strong LG/rail will enable you to be a top player in CPM, you wont be the best (sorry LuGia), I've seen players with 50+- LG and rail acc be outsmarted, outmoved and outplayed. Weapon switch delays also take away an element - I know it's quite tactical to choose beforehand what weapon you should take into a fight, but due to the size of the maps and sound occlusion in VQ3, you're rarely sure exactly from where your opponent will come, until it's too late, and then you're stuck with what weapon you started with. It also limits your choices for weapon combos, a skilled cpm player will be able to do a three weapon rocket-LG-rail combo where in vq3 there is only time for rocket-rail. It just seems limiting, it feels like playing with a handicap.

This is also especially the case with movement - It's amazing to me that OSP players complain that they feel 'sluggish' in CPMA/VQ3. Imagine then going from cpm to vq3! The aircontrol movement adds a whole new dimension to the game, a whole new element of skill. It can always give you an advantage in a match, but again, this alone won't win games. I believe this is another reason for the smaller maps being popular - games shouldn't be movement only (try playing cpm on dm6).

Don't get me wrong, VQ3 definitely has its moments, and I enjoy a game once in a while - hell I'll even play osp sometimes - there just is no comparison to CPM as far as skill depth, speed and overall FUN goes, especially for duelling. VQ3 was designed to be fun on a saturday afternoon with 5 players on dm17, not for competitive duelling, as is the case with cpm. The only reason I can imagine for people trying it out and not liking it is that either they were completely raped by a better player, or they just don't like change, even if it's for the better.

glhf :)
