Announcing the 2020 QuakeWorld AllStars (11 comments)
Posted by hemostick @ 18:15 CDT, 30 September 2020 - iMsg
(Ho-hum. Is this thing on?)
Lately, you may have had more time to get to the choppah get your old .cfg off those dusty floppies in the attic and join a Quake server of your preferred iteration. Maybe even QuakeWorld!
At any rate, many have come back during QWarantine, and that influx of players has given us great activity in the form of the QuakeCon At Home duel tournament, the newly-started GetQuad! Nations cup, second season of HammerTime 2v2, fourteenth season of Thunderdome...

After a two year hiatus, it seemed like a good time to have ourselves a good ol' showmatch again : thus cometh QuakeWorld AllStars, 2020 edition.

First, there will be a draft show where two TDM luminaries will draft their teams from a pool of returning and active stars, such as Sweden Xantom, PolandInsane, SwedenGrisling, FinlandMilton, Sweden Bps, Canada Blood_Dog, United States of America BogoJoker, United Kingdom HangTime, Russia gLAd, Russia Bulat, Netherlands Blixem ... (more TBD).
Second - these teams will duke it out in a show match comprising at least the classic TB3 maps for our greatest enjoyment, live on SuddendeathTV.

So far, the ETA is sometime in october-november while we iron out the details and finalize the player list.
Until then, if you are, or know oldschool TDM players who could be interested in playing, get in touch with Ocoini on the QuakeWorld Discord, or drop us a DM on FB or Twitter to get involved!
More info on Quakeworld.nu and here as the story develops.

120hz lcd (vx2268 and others) over VGA (23 comments)
Posted by hemostick @ 08:38 CDT, 15 May 2010 - iMsg
So now the dust has settled and it appears the Samsung 2233rz and Viewsonic vx2268 are the top dogs when it comes to 22" 120hz LCDs at the moment. However the Viewsonic is the only one with a VGA connector.
See - the GF6600Gt in my shuttle XPC has both DVI and VGA, but its DVI is most likely not the right type for 120hz action at this kind of resolution.
My laptop, which is my main machine(9600M GT), has an HDMI out I know for sure can't do 120hz, which leaves its VGA out as the only option.

I would expect to be able to get that monitor to run at 120hz over a direct VGA connection, but apparently you HAVE to use a dual-link DVI interface to get that kind of refresh rate out of these screeens, and the VX doesn't easily do that refresh rate at lower resolutions...

Anyone tried it? Outlook not so good ... might have to stick to a really snappy 60hz panel :/

(edit: shuttle is on xp sp3, lappy on vista sp2)

Q4Max 0.82 released (130 comments)
Posted by hemostick @ 14:29 CDT, 12 June 2008 - iMsg
Q4Max 0.82 is now available for download. There are 3 significant changes in this release:

Tutorbot. The tutorbot allows you to record and playback snippets which you can share with other players, or use for practicing yourself. For more details, see the page in the wiki.

cg_unsmoothclients. This new cvar (defaulted to the preferred value of 2), makes the prediction of the other players' positions more accurate, and so makes the game much more playable at higher pings at the cost of some smoothness.

The Domination gametype ("callvote mode dom"). This is a team-game where you gain points for your team by capturing points throughout the level.

Of course, there are also the usual assorted other tweaks and updates : extra SuperHud options, infinite ammo votes, and fixes for some invisible projectiles coming from nowhere, a gui bug leaking large amounts of memory on dedicated servers, and "the headless quaker" bug.
For full details, see the changelog.

Note to Mac users : Q4Max still runs on OS X. The Mac-specific package of this release might come at a later time. At the moment, just unzip the new file from above into your .81 install.

How to play back Q4 demos

WSVG London Grand Final.
Map 1 : swq4dm1 (Phrantic)
Map 2 : l4dm1_1 (Galang)
Map 3 : l4dm2_1 (Monsoon)

Due to a rare server setup specificity, playing these demos through the demo menu will give an error.
Use playnetdemo "filename" in the console instead.

I check planet quake/doom/unreal once in a while (old habit from before the gamespy days) and these days, they have random ads picked in a common base from other websites from the planet*** network...

Sometimes, you get that kind of contradiction =)
