QuakeLive Training Map (1 comment)

Obviously not everyone will read the official ql forum, so for those that don't - mrks and myself have recently been working on a b0_beta6 inspired training map for ql, it's still a bit of a rough beta but response has been pretty positive so far. Currently there are only strafe sections (using gaps from actual ql maps), a strafe pad room and a puzzle room, but I will be adding weapon sections in the future.

Any feedback's appreciated, you can read more info here: http://www.quakelive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18447

For people that can't be bothered with that - place the pk3 in your baseq3 folder with the other pk3's, set it to read only (or ql will delete it), then run from console. To play the puzzle room start a ctf game with 1 bot, join the red team and ready up - you will need r_fullbright 1 for the puzzle room as I forgot to add lights.

Mouse Recommendations? (36 comments)

Hey, wondering if anyone can help me out with finding a decent mouse.

I was using a copperhead for a while and it was great, really love the feel of that mouse - I feel like I can control it perfectly and it actualy aims exactly where I move it. Anyway, that then broke after about a year thanks to the copperheads less than perfect build quality, and I got a lachesis as its replacement. I didn't get to try one out before hand but it seemed to me like an upgraded copperhead with a slightly different body.

That purchase was a big mistake. The shape is awful - razer seem to think they've invented a mouse here that works with both finger and palm grippers, though as a finger gripper I just couldn't get comftable with it, I actualy feel like I have to use my palm on the mouse, and then I have to drop my sensitivity about 30% just to get the same aim I got from the copperhead.

Anyway, I put up with this for about 8 months thinking "I'll get used to it eventualy", but I just can't, it's awful and clearly isn't for me. So I got myself another copperhead. Now I should explain at this point I mainly play defrag, so highish sensitivity isn't much of a problem (was playing with a 10cm turning circle), however I've been playing a lot more osp and ql recently so I dropped my sens to about a 15cm turning circle, which helps my aim a lot. This is where the copperheads obvious flaw comes out - it cuts out EVERYTIME I try and 180, I have to do 180's slowley on purpose just so my mouse doesn't die. This was obviosuly unplayable unless I wanted to up my sens again, which makes my aim much worse... so I'm back to using the lachesis now.

Now as I said before, I need to lower my sens with the lachesis just to get the same control with it as I have with the copperhead, thanks to its sux shape. So I'm now playing with a 20cm turning circle, and guess what? Yup, the lachesis starts having massive problems with negative acceleration and sometimes cuts out when I turn fast. In short, the lesson I've taken away from this is; LASER MICE SUCK - but anyway, on to what I need from a mouse.

First of all I grip my mouse like claw grip though with my fingers flat, so I guess half way between claw and palm - my palm never actualy touches the mouse with the copperhead anyway. I need the area of my hand from thumb to little finger touching the mouse mat anyway (forming a U shape). I also need two easy to reach thumb buttons (not out the way like on some logitech mice), preferably so my thumb actualy rests on top of them but I guess I could learn to live with them just off. Finally the mouse needs to be able to cope with a 20cm sens (which really doesn't seem that much), I guess I probably never go over 2m/s with my mouse movement.

I don't care what make or how much (within reason) the mouse is if it works well and meets my requirements. I have looked at the diamondback as a possibility though I'm not overly keen on the thumb button placement and they don't state its polling rate on the razer site which sounds pretty fail to me. The 2007 boomslang looks like a possibility also, although it only has one thumb button (not sure if hitting the right hand side button is feasible in-game) and I hear mixed things about its shape so maybe I could get some feedback on that? The low profile does appeal to me though. I guess another possibility is the deathadder - while this is obviously made for palmers, if I can make a U shape on the mousemat from my thumb to little finger (without the back of my hand being lifted off) I should be happy with the control I can get from it, and at least I know this mouse would work at any speed I can move it. I guess in a perfect world I'd just buy a deathadder, open it up and put the sensor in a copperhead body and have a mouse I know I'm going to love, though I would probably just ruin two perfectly good mice if I actualy tried that. =)

Anyway, hopefuly I can get some good suggestions here, suggesting any mouse is welcome, the mice I mentioned above are just ones I've looked in to and seem like they might fit the bill.
