My bro built me a PC out of old parts during lockdown, I bought a 240hz monitor to use with it. frames were like 150-180 in Quake so my bro gave me a GTX 1080, now frames are 160-200.
The PC as it stands is i5 2500K at 4.2Ghz, 8gb ram 1333Mhz along with the 1080. I don't want to go as far as upgrading the mother board and CPU and ram so these are my two options:-

1/ Upgrade the ram to 16Gb 2133Mhz and overclock the CPU further (it's liquid cooled and runs really cool).

or

2/ Upgrade the ram to 16Gb 2133Mhz and put in an i7 3770k (the fastest cpu my motherboard will take) and overclock that to mid 4Ghz?

The first option will cost about £60, the second option will cost £160.

I've currently got a Benq xl2720z which I fancy upgrading. I naturally looked at an xl2540 because I think my 27inch is a tad big and the xl2540 is 240hz. What are my best options at 25inch with super high refresh rate/response time and price?

I've downloaded Quake Champions and cannot for the life of me get it to run full screen. The game runs but the screen fades to black. I can press the windows key to minimize Quake and return to desktop, click quake (that's still running) to make it full screen again and I get to see everything running normally for about 2 - 3 seconds before it fades to black again. So Quake isn't crashing, it continues to run but the monitor just slowly fades out to black
I've done alot of googling and tried all sorts but I can't fix it. I can run QC in windowed mode but full screen just doesn't work.
I'd greatly appreciate any advice?

Just joined steam and bought the new QL, my config didn't save so I exec'd the relevant files whilst running the steam game. Everything seemed fine apart from the HUD but when I get shot my screen flashes like hell - it's annoying as hell. I've browsed through the options and I've fished for relevant commends in console but I've not managed to turn it off. I've set all the cg_screendamage options to 0 but it still flashes when I've hit. Can anyone help me out please?

I recently updated my graphics drivers which in tern recent all my old settings (3D settings in graphics card control panel) and now Quake Live doesn't seem to look as smooth. My PC is not the latest and greatest but it is very ample to achieve well over 120Fps constantly (2.4Ghz quad core intel, 5500Ti Geforce). I use an old 22" Mitsubishi CRT screen that puts out 120hz at 1078. All the usual, obvious settings seem fine - com_maxfps, r_dsiplayrefresh etc It doesn't seem to be a frame rate problem, more the textures and models aren't as solid as they used to be. I'm sure it'll be some setting in the 3D control panel. Can anyone poijnt me in the right direction?

I'm looking at using a projector in my basement as a home cinema. This is currently where my PC is to which I have a big ample sound system set up. I was going to run films off my PC and then through a projector as a home cinema. I have no clue about projectors so I was hoping some of you guys could help me out?
I really like the look of The Viewsonic PJD-7820HD but it's a tad pricey.

I've been a Virgin fibre (50mbs) user for over 4 years. Since last august, playing Quake Live at peak times has been pretty much impossible with lots of packet loss and fluctuating pings. Normally I would ping 17-21 to UK servers, at peak times this would be 32+ with spikes and packet loss.
I'm just in the process of switching to BT infinity (40mbs). Can any of the Virgin and Infinity fibre users let me know what you think to your service? Ping times etc. Cheers

Anyone know why I'm pinging 120+ to every server apart from Polish and Italian? I'm in the UK, usually have good pings to everywhere (within reason) - 17 to UK servers but today, all day I've had 120+ to everywhere (even UK) apart from Polish and Italian, to these two I've been pinging 50-60. Anyone else have this?

I've managed to get hold of another WMO after not using one for about 5 years or more. It's a second hand one that a friend got me for free from his offices. I've found that the left click seems to stick 'on' every ten mins or so just for a few seconds. Anyone got any advice as to how to rectify?
P.S. I've used Deathadder, Abyssus, Kana, Kinzu, Zowie EC2 Evo in the past 5 years and switching back to this WMO is sooo nice :) they're just so good! :)

The hide modes this monitor cannot display check box is unchecked and greyed out and I'm limited to a max refresh rate of 85hz on my Mitsubishi diamond plus 230 sb (CRT) which will refresh at upto 160hz at low res. I can't get it to do any thing above 85 - any help?

My old ATI 4670 1gb has just died, I want a geforce replacement for as cheap as possible - I'm talking around 30 quid if possible. Probably a high end version of an old series that'll out perform my old card. Suggestions please? Asap, I want to order tonight! I only play quake live. Thanks

I decided to try and make my graphics 'better' (more clear). I had a little mess around and ended up making them really dark and couldn't brighten things up with r_gamma (it woudn't work/make a difference). At the minute I have r_ignorehwgamma 0, with postprocessing on and color correction off and mapoverbrightbits 10. It looks 'ok' but I had it better than this earlier but can't remember how. At the minute the contrast seems abit crappy and although the enemy model is nice and bright, my crosshair seems to get washed out a little against the rest of the map (crosshairbrightness 0 - black). Any pointers anyone? p.s. I don't like ignorehwgamma 1 because rockets get fat and shaft looks brighter/fatter. Thanks

Does anyone have a recent Cypher config? The last one I saw was from much earlier in the year (spring) with fov 110, crosshair 7 at 33, slightly lower sens and accel to normal - like 40cm per 360 and 0.7 accel etc etc

I'm a big fan of a lot of the big Quake players - huge fan of Cooller and Cypher but I'm thinking that Strenx 'could' be the one to beat at the up coming Quakecon. He's got the experience now and he's proving he can beat the big boys time and time again. Doing it on LAN is a big ask but I think it's a realistic possibility this time round.

I'm wanting to buy another WMO having not used one for about 2 years (Abysuss, Kinzu back to Abysuss and now Kana). I've seen some for sale on ebay from China 'brand new', are these legit? Also, I've seen a guy selling some in gloss finish with the steel series logo on them, apparently also 'brad new' - what's the deal here?
And finaly, what's the best way to run a WMO on a modern PC (Win 7) - Hz edit? reg edit? etc?

Just built a new gaming PC out of 'hand me down' parts :) 3.1Ghz quad, 4Gb, Asus board etc but had to use my old ATI card (PCI express 4670 1Gb DDR3). I've got the latest 13.1 cataysts on and it seems to work fine apart from none of the 3D settings seem to take effect once selected. For example, I want to use a anti aliasing and no matter what setting I select, it doesn't take effect. I have the force settings for all applications set.
Can anyone help? Do I need an older driver?

I have a 20mb cable/fibre optic connection (Virgin). It's been perfect for the best part of 2 years - pings of 20 solid to UK servers, 30-40 to french, german and dutch servers and 50-60 to polish etc. Just recently (the last month) my ping has been higher and more unstable than usual and I've had lots of complaints about me warping. For example 40-70 on UK servers and 50-110 on euro servers with warping and ping spikes on all.
Any suggestions as to sorting this out? Thanks

I used a WMO for about 5 years, then switched to an Abyssus which I've been using for about 3 years. I liked both these mice but I'm not 100% pleased with either. I'm very interested in BST's new gaming mouse but I'm also liking the look of the Zowie EC1. I have large hands and a claw grip. Can anyone give me a run down of what I can expect from an EC1 and how it would differ from the WMO 1.1a and Abyssus?

I'm sure this has been done before but I've never seen it in any config I've used/downloaded. I thought it up yesterday and I've been testing it with pleasing results :) (I don't think this would be much good for low seners, I use around 3.9 at 450Dpi and m_pitch/yaw at 0.018. Also, if you use zoom this wouldn't work either without adding extra cmd's to your binds).

I'm sure you can work out from this little script that it would give you a lowered percentage of your original sensitivity for the MG, PG and LG 'only' when you are firing. I tried it at 0.75 to start with and found it to be too much of a difference from my standard sens. After a game or two of getting used to it I just hit a healthy 47% LG in a CA game which is on the higher side of things for me. I usualy hit about 34-42%. More importantly than the percentage hit, I felt more confident in LG fights and found a delt more damage than usual. Plasma also felt more effective :)

I've been switching between my Abysuss (3.5G) and Kinzuadder (3G) recently and I've noticed that the Kinzuadder with the old deathadder 3G sensor is tracking much more solidly than the abysuss. It feels more solid and never misses a beat even with the fastest of movements - which is to be expected. The abysuss just feels less solid and tends to error sometimes with fast movements. It miss tracks and leaves me looking vertically.
I actually prefer to use the abysuss because it's slightly lighter, has less friction and a better positioned sensor so I'm not too pleased about it letting me down. I use a alpha goliathus which is nice and clean. Is this something to expect of the abysuss after a certain period of use? I've only had it about 2 years, probably just less.
The kinzuadder tracks perfectly, I just find the sensors too far back for me and the mouse feels a little small.

I bought a 2233rz last year and although I quite like it, I fancy going back to a good CRT. Can anyone suggest a handful of 21inch screens to go for? And are there any good UK sites that sell reconditioned CRT's? If I can find one I'm going to sell my 2233rz. Thanks

My computer is no power house but it did what I wanted it to do perfectly this time last year. It ran Quakelive flawlessly 120fps+ constant. I moved house last november and didn't use my PC for a few days during the move (maybe a week). When I set it up at my new house it wouldn't boot. I used to be clued up on computers but I can't be assed with them anymore so I asked my brother to have a look at it. He said there was a ram problem straight away. I have 2 X 512Mb corsair 400hz. He got my PC to boot with just one stick of ram in it then tried the two sticks in different slots until he got it to boot.
Since then I've had performance issues where Quake live would chug a little from time to time. It seems to run fine and then chokes up and the FPS would drop noticeably. I couldn't be bothered to mess around so I put up with it.
Today my brother gave me a spare stick of 512mb 400hz ram to upgrade my weak ass PC :) I stuck the ram in a spare slot along with the other half gig sticks and it wouldn't boot. I took out the new ram and tried another slot and again it wouldnt boot. I took out the new ram altogether and it still wouldn't boot. I took out one of my old sticks just leaving half a gig in and it booted. Strange thing is, the clogging up of FPS seems to have improved, it still does it but not as bad as with matching pair of ram in.
Can anyone through me a bone? Idealy I'd like to get it running with the 3 half gig sticks and hopefully get it so it runs smoothly like it used to before I moved house.
Its a DFI lanparty NF4 AMD SLI board with a 2.4Ghz Athlon and an ATI 4670 1gig.

I'm abit of a quake veteran at the ripe old age of 28 having started playing way back in the early days of quake world. Being more and more hardcore throughout the following releases, however, taking a complete break during quake 4...;)
I've always had a slight mouse and config fetish which was very much a love hate relationship a lot of the time :) I've used quite a vast selection of mice over the years, most recently I did a 5 year stint on the landmark pointing device - the wheel mouse optical 1.1a. This was the longest period I'd ever stuck with a mouse. Out of boredom I tried out a deathadder 3.5G a while back which led to the purchase of an abyssus having loved the superior razor sensor over the old Microsoft but hated the heavy shape. I much preferred the abyssus over the deathadder but still the shape sucked donkey shlong.
When a caught wind of people making their own hybrid mice dubbed the kinzuadder I had to get hold of one. The shape and sensor seemed a dream combination for me. A very kind member of this site made me my very own kinzuadder and sent it out to me 2 weeks ago. The kinzuadder is 'the' best pointing device I've ever had :) it quite literally has no bad points and is pretty much perfect in every respect. The build quality is very solid yet light. It's the tried and tested shape of the 1.1a but with the best sensor to date (the 3G razor) but with improved lift off distance. I freakin' love this mouse! :)

I have a 4650 1Gb which has always been upto the job of running QL as well as I'd need it to until I upgraded my monitor at christmas to a 2233rz samsung (120hz). I had to upgrade the drivers to be able to run 120hz. Since then I've noticed a drop in performance. I'm using version 10.12.
Can anyone recommend me a better or more suitable version for my card that will still have no problems in running 120hz?

I'm getting serious FPS problems from time to time when I'm running things through Firefox. I can't watch high quality videos in Youtube at all (high quality/HD), dispite loading/streaming perfectly well, they play at extremely low FPS. My main concern is that I also get a similar thing with Quakelive. It appears worse when I'm shooting bots on DM17. It will run perfectly well for a few seconds and then really judder for a few seconds. It's less apparent on proper maps when I play on-line but it still happens from time to time. It's really annoying! :/ My PC isn't an up to date power house but it should run things like this perfeclty well. I use the latest version of firefox, ATI 4650 1Gb, 1Gb ram, samsung 2233 120hz, external USB Native Instruments sound card.
Would love to clear this up. My PC seemed to develop this problem around christmas time. Previous to that it was fine.

I'm getting an occasional jittering on my monitor screen when I play quake. It appears every 2 or 3 seconds for about a second. Its annoying as hell, it goes from solid smooth to laggy jittery for every few seconds. Anyone have any ideas? I'm running samsung 2233rz at 120hz res 800X600 4:3 ratio (black lines down the sides). Graphics cards an ATI 4600.
I've recently added an external usb sound card, could this have something to do with the problem? Also, I noticed when i play high quality youtube vids (HD) they run at a terribley low frame rate as well despite my internet connection being well over capable of streaming the clips. Any help much appreciated.

I'm not wanting to know how to use custom huds here - let me just sat that to start with :) I recently had alook at one of cyphers configs, it was from eswc 010 I 'think'. The whole config was in a zip named 'ui'. There was a file inside named Linkjn which appeared to have cmds about a crosshair/s. Cyphers ui files had a cmd to exec the Linkje hud file with these crosshair cmds. However, I was unable to get it to work. When I loaded Cyphers config it loaded with no visible crosshair and there were no crosshair cmds binded to the weapon keys.
Can anyone help me out here and tell me how I would get this crosshair file to work with the config?

Just unwrapped and setup my new 2233rz monitor. Seems to be working fine but I'm not sure if it's putting out 120hz in quakelive. To be honest, it doesn't look like it is. I've installed the drivers and the monitor is recognised properly etc. I've set 120hz with the r_displayrefresh setting but it looks hardly any different to 75hz (maybe no difference at all).
Can someone point me in the right direction? :)

I've got the abyssus with the 3.5G sensor. I have it set at 1800Dpi and 1000hz with the windows sens very low - about 1.5 - 2. In Quake I use sens 5 and accel 0.1 with m_pitch and m_yaw slightly lowered.
The thing is, the razer driver sensitivty slider only seems to stop at certain points of the sensitivity range dispite where you put it. i.e. it rounds its self up or down to a mile stone mark depending on where you place it on the slider. This is really annoying for me because the mile stone mark just below 1.5 is slightly too low and the next mile stone above is slightly too high. I want to keep my sens 5 and accel 0.1in Quakelive because I've used this ratio for a very long time now.
Anyone else have this problem? and is there a way around it?

I've used a 1.1a optical wheel mouse for years and out of bordedom I fancied a change so ordered a Death Adder 3500 the other night. I've just recieved it and got it set up.
I play Quakelive and used 5 sens, accel 0.1, m_pitch and yaw at 0.018 and default windows sens with the 1.1a. The Adder has the additional options like dpi and master sens and the rest of it... Can anyone offer abit of advice about setting this thing up for the best? Also I'd really like a similar sens and accel to that I had with the 1.1a so if there's any way to achieve this with the Adder I'd be interested to know? (without being sarcastic and saying switch back to the 1.1a please) :)
First impressions - it's a tad bigger than I expected, it's heavier than the 1.1a and although it's supposed to have minimal lift off sens detection, it's not as small as the 1.1a :/
I'm eager to have a good go with this mouse so I need to get it fine tuned. If I can't get on with it, I'll give it my brother and plug the 1.1a back in :)

I''ve used alsorts of mice in the past, I bought and changed them regularly until I realised that I loved the Optical wheel mouse 1.1a. I've used the Optical wheel mouse for some years now, maybe 5.
I'm maybe fancying a change with the mouse because this one is getting abit old and worn but still performs perfectly so I thought I'd consider my options having noticed theres lots more gaming focused mice available now. Also, my brothers bday's coming up and he's a gamer so I was thiking of ordering him one as well. I play QL and he plays WoW and QL so he needs more buttons than I do, I'm ok with just the two :)
So whats the way forward? Steel series? Razor? or stick with the MS? For me, tracking is crusial, being able to track big fast sweeps is a must. Also, I love the short sensor response of the 1.1a sensor - not having to pick the mouse up off the pad very high to stop it tracking. I also like the weight (being very light) and that its shape for grip. I think the 1.1a's going to be hard to replace for me :)

Just recently got a QCK heavy to replace my old small DKT pad. It has all the propertys I want from a pad, good size, good friction. "Seemed" to track perfectly well but after a few days of use I'm now begining to think it doesn't track as well as my old DKT pad. Does this sound normal for this combination? I use the MS drivers, 1000hz hack and play Quakelive. Low'ish sens, low-mid accel, m_filter 0.
Once or twice its totaly errored and I've ended up facing the cieling randomly and every now and then when I do a short, quick flick it seems to float a little extra in the same direction on screen if you can understand what I mean from that :)
I've used a DKT pad for many years without either of these issues.
Is this normal and something I have to live with?
I did want the Puretrack talent but went for this istead because it was much easier to get hold of.

Dispite knowing loads of the quake commands, having played the game since the early days I know nothing about hud setting. I've recently been trying out other peoples configs and found Dahang and Cyphers hud to be alot more desireable than standard to me. The problem is I have no idea how to set it my-self, can someone help me out please?
These must be some kind of standard hud settings because I havent downloaded any additional custom huds. Cyphers and Dahangs, on the configs I have, have a much bigger timer and health and armour and they're postioned better aswell.

Looking to replace my sont CRT monitor with a TFT. Play alot of QL so it needs to be gamer friendly :) I'm pretty clueless when it comes to TFT's other than they have two types of response time that are both important for games such as Quake.
I am considering that 120hz 22inch samsung screen but would prefer something cheaper maybe. If there isn't anything anywhere near as good then I'll just get one of those.
Are there any screens to look at with a low response time and say 100hz?

For a very long time now I've put up with this shabby connection to the internet. Its free orange broadband that my sister got with her mobile phone ;)
On a morning QL plays fine, after work around 6pm onwards its unplayable. Ping spikes and swings from 30 to 150, the lagometer looks like its having a party!
It looks as if congestion is my problem but doesn't a game connection only require something like 10kbs constant flow? surely any broad band connection can manage 'that'?
I'm sick of it and don't wanna start paying for a "better"/different connection if the problems going to re-occur because of my area or if the problem could possibley be something else?
Any help? and any good, super cheap UK ISP's?

Basicly, my ping sucks ass at 5pm+. On a weekend and through regular working hours I ping 30 to UK servers and 30-60 on euro servers depending on the server/server location. After working hours, during the early evening my ping is very unstable - 30 to 120, totaly unplayable.
Is this simply my ISP being conjested at these times? My ISP is orange 2mb, free with my sisters mobile phone :)
I think I'd rather pay and have a good, consistant ping rather than have this crappy connection for free.
I'm assuming that this is the problem.
Any input guys? or suggestion of a good, cheap UK ISP?

For some reason I can't get into any servers in Quake Live anymore. Everything loads fine and the server list appears etc. It just hangs on the "awaiting challenge" screen and counts forever. Thats what firefox. I cant get internet explorer 7 or 8 to work at the minute. The older internet explorer that "does" work is too old to run Quake Live.
Can anyone help me out?
I've tried changing to an older version of firefox and re-installing the plugin but the same problem is still present.

Having thrown out my dying 7950 and replaced it with a 4670 I've had a little play with the catalyst control center 3D options to make the QL graphics to my liking. I use picmip 5 at 640 res (prefer the crosshair like this and get 120hz refresh) with anti aliasing set quite high to make things nice a precise.
I've set the 3D options in the control center to one notch off "top quality". The graphics look amazingly clear and smooth with these settings but the shaft graphic I don't like. It appears to go on forever and the tip is extremly fine and small. I find it harder to aim like this.
I want to make the shaft back how it was - where the tip appears to cut off so the end of the shaft appears wider. However, I would prefer to keep the rest of my graphics as close as possible to how they currently are. Can anyone point me towards the "one" setting that will alter this?
I can simply set the graphics closer to "performance" to achieve this effect but at the expense of everything else becoming less clear including text and the crosshair.
Also, I don't suppose theres a way of using the old Quake 3 picmip 5 shaft is there?

Just bought me a new graphics card and ram upgrade for my aging PC. After fitting them both I had problems getting windows to boot. I've now found out that the new ram was the problem. The new graphics cards in and working but I've had to resort back to my old kingstone hyper-X 512mb DDR ram (matching pair 256mb x 2 DDR, very, very old).
The new stuff's crucial 2 x 512mb matching pair DDR 400. I replaced the ram like for like but it wouldn't boot into windows? it regeistered the 1gb ram on the initial post but just hung on the screen before Windows booted up.
What do you think guys?
The boards a DFI lan party sli, AMD 4000+ (old, old, old).

QL's got me back gaming after about 4 years away from the scene. Trouble is, my PC's like 4 years old now so I've just ordered me a new graphics card and some more ram (mainly because my graphics card was broken and holding on for dear life).
My monitors very old and I'd love something newer and flashier but having been away from the whole scene for years, I have no idea where to start looking. I'm currently on a 17" sony trinitron - don't laugh ;)
I'd like an upgrade guy's so was hoping that some of you in the know could point me in the right direction? Bang for buck is "very" important as I want to spend as little as possible without buying something not very good :)
Bascily something thats a nice upgrade from the 17" I have would be great. Either a 19" or 21" with good performance figures for the cash. Back when I was last clued up, TFT's were a no no - are they worth buying now days - the cheaper ones that is. I know the more expensive ones can live upto the analog monitors.

Hiya guys, I'm so massively out of touch with the hardware scene now days, its unreal. I haven't a clue about the latest stuff on the market. My PC's old and my graphics cards on its way out and I need to replace it. At the same time I thought I might as well stick some ram in as well. I want to spend as little as possible but don't wanna buy crap. I cant even remember what motherboard I have to help with this - its a DFI lan party with a AMD 4000+ CPU if that helps? the graphics card is a geforce 7900 "I think" (pci express).
I've only got half a gig of ram as well so I'll throw that out and stick some new in. Cheap as pos, don't wanna spend much. Any suggestions?
