AR3NA is a 35-minute experimental visual study of over 200 Quake III maps, created by Netherlands Jordy Veenstra (A Pixelated Point of View).

As described by the author:

AR3NA is a experimental visual study about Quake III Arena; its environments and its textures. AR3NA is antimatter. AR3NA is rejection. Of skill and traditional means of gameplay. No power-ups, weapons and/or players are found. It is you, your inner thoughts and the arena, inside a world that is empty, inside a universe that is limitless. The rest is up to you.

Enjoy.

OK my dudes time to resurface some amazing movies, this time defrag. Aside from MrHollyDriv3r's legendary [df.] series I really love the vibes of this:

I kinda find myself valuing beautiful maps and mesmerizing music more than the actual runs themselves.

What are your go-to defrag movies?

I just happened to scroll down to the bottom of one of the absolute cripple fight cesspits of terminal cancer that ESR has recently succumbed to, and was somehow able to decipher, amidst the monotonous wastes and endless plains of mental problems and decrepitude, that drejk actually beat sanchez, fairly convincingly, in a Q4 match on phrantic:

congratulations now can you two dummies fuck off log off and go outside for cryin' out loud. thanks! there is no doubt in my mind that this is definitely the last we will ever hear of this circus.

ps: goddamn Q4 is ugly as fuck, why would someone choose to play that over Q3

probably more enjoyable if you get high

I think there are some nice wallpaper opportunities in there, or someone may find something useful in there for some project at some point. As things seem to be trending ever more towards a cartoony, family-friendly, unoffensive look, I feel like there will never again be something so fluid, primitive, popular and enjoyable yet at the same time also so visceral, gritty, sinister and darkly beautiful as Q1 and Q3.

Help Quake is Potat donate to esports professionals (22 comments)
Posted by melechesh @ 09:39 CDT, 6 July 2018 - iMsg
Hey guys,

As I'm sure you know, Quakecon 2018 is just around the corner. As a long time Quake Champions player and devoted supporter of the game myself, it would bring me great happiness and joy to see some of my favourite athletes from the world of professional digital gymnastics to attend this amazing event. I'm sure you understand.

Unfortunately, there are a fair amount of players I would like to support financially to help pay for their travel and quality of life expenses, which would leave me at a somewhat uncomfortable status economically in these hard times. Just like my heros, I also cannot afford to find employment as this would interfere with the hours I dedicate towards my career in professional virtual athletics.

I think we can all agree that professional gaming and employment simply are not compatible, and until society adapts to recognize this, we must do what we can to help eachother out. I'm sure you understand.

Because of this situation, I have set up a gofundme page so that you can donate to me, and this way I can achieve my dream of donating to my e-olympics heros. I have set a modest goal of €4,560 and I promise full transparency, so here is a breakdown of the expenses:

- €200 to each of the 10 professional digital cyberathletes that I want to support. I'm sure you understand.

- €340 for a new keyboard and mouse to ensure that the donations are performed optimally. My current keyboard and mouse are beginning to show signs of wear and tear. I'm sure you understand.

- €700 to pay the rent during which the donations will happen. I'm sure you understand.

- €72 to pay for the electricity for the month during which the donations will happen. I'm sure you understand.

- €49 to pay for the the internet for the month during which the donations will happen. I'm sure you understand.

- €1,400 to pay for food and drink for the month during which the donations will happen. Unfortunately in my current status of aspiring professional digital electronic athletics competitor, I cannot find enough free time in my tough practice schedule to make trips to the supermarket, so I must unfortunately eat every day at the restaurant of the hotel across the street. Remember what Fatal1ty said, "practice, practice, practice!".

I'm sure you understand.

QL map custom texture packs (2 comments)
Posted by melechesh @ 05:03 CST, 2 January 2018 - iMsg
What are the go-to websites these days for finding custom texture packs (.pk3) for QL maps? I remember seeing a couple of movies where for example dm20 was re-textured.

Specifically I'm looking for texture packs for QL TDM maps like Purgatory, Limbus, Dreadful Place, etc...

- - -

Otherwise, is there any tutorial for doing this myself? Or is it fairly straightforward? I've done it with weapon and player models before but something tells me re-texturing a map is a little more complex since it's not just one texture anymore, and these maps get their textures from different base pk3 files.

Cheap 'n' Good Phones? (67 comments)
Posted by melechesh @ 09:42 CDT, 28 March 2017 - iMsg
I need to upgrade my 7 year old phone, I'm looking for something in the 100-200 € price range, something straightforward and reliable. I want a phone for making calls, sending texts, taking the random photo and sporadic app usage, with decent battery. Nothing too fancy, but also something that I won't need to upgrade for 5 years.

I'm clueless however, as to which brands/models are good these days. So far I've heard bad things about HTC, Huawei and Samsung, and good things about Motorola and Sony.

Any specific model recommendations, or even brand recommendations from u guise?

Book thread - 2016 edition (112 comments)
Posted by melechesh @ 19:42 CDT, 22 July 2016 - iMsg
You know those square flappy things made out of trees. Well I've been reading a lot of them over the last 12+ months. Mostly sci-fi, but also some 20th century classics, and the odd autobiography / non-fiction work.

I used to only read while travelling or visiting my parents' house but for some time now I've got into the routine of reading before bed, during work breaks, and also reading outside if it's sunny, which is great.

Some people will pick up books at random and see how it goes, but I always try to aim for books which I know I'm going to enjoy, either because I'm familiar with the author, or because the book itself is just one of those which you keep on seeing mentioned here and there. Also, there are few books I acquired because the book earned some prestigious awards, or in some cases simply because the combination of the title and cover art convinced me that it would be a good read. When possible, I try to avoid even reading the blurb on the back. The less I know about the contents, the better.

Out of the lot, there have only been a couple of books which I had high hopes for but which ultimately disappointed me terribly, the first one being Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash", which I picked up because I wanted to check Neal Stephenson out and because there is an ESR user who adopted "Snow Crash" for his/her nick.

I forced myself to finish it, and then just put in on the table and frowned at it for a minute. Then I noticed the front cover's promotional critic quote... "Fast-forward free-style mall mythology for the twenty-first century". Yeah, that's an accurate description all right :/ Still, I have Anathem and Cryptonomicon on my shelf, and having checked the first few pages of both it seems that Neal Stephenson is actually really good, and I'm definitely looking forward to reading both of them.

The other disappointment was Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" which I found to be rather indigestible... but still worth reading once, and thankfully not very long.

As for the rest, they were all either great reads, or fantastic reads. Out of these great books, there have been a handful which, shortly after reading them, gave me the urge to start this year's ESR book thread, and with all the nonsense going on I finally thought it would make a bit of a refreshing change. Innit.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the following:

"Ilium" / "Olympos" by Dan Simmons - Only a god-tier sci-fi writer like Simmons, who is perhaps better known for his Hyperion trilogy, could pull something like this off. All 1461 pages of it.

"Matter", "Use of Weapons", "Surface Detail" and "Inversions" by Iain M. Banks - Banks is possibly my favourite sci-fi author, his universes feel so enormous and original, and his story-telling is so detailed. I've devoured all his sci-fi novels in a semi-random order, casually leaving "Inversions" for last. Not only did I leave it for last (you must), but I also dedicated an entire weekend to immersing myself in it completely and reading it from front to back in 2 days... what a fucking experience that was.

I love all his books, but "Use of Weapons", "Surface Detail" and especially "Matter" are worth mentioning in this journal as they impacted me marginally more than his other works, and I'd recommend checking out "Matter" as a starting point if you're new to Banks (or you can start with "Consider Phlebas" and read them chronologically, which is probably better in the long run amirite).

"Ringworld" by Larry Niven - Really good sci-fi, wish it was 5 times longer.

"The Gods Themselves" by Isaac Asimov - I've never read anything quite like this.

"Martian Time-Slip" by Philip K. Dick - Powerful drama in a sci-fi world.

"Ancillary Justice" by Ann Leckie - Fresh sci-fi. Some critic said she's the new Banks. Well, I wouldn't say that just yet, but this is a damn fine story for a debut novel and the sequel "Ancillary Sword" is the next book I intend to read.

"Lord of the Flies" by William Golding - One of the classics, brutal, must be absorbed.

"Catch-22" by Joseph Heller - Yes, that famous one all the pseudo-intellectuals ramble on about... well I can assure you it lives up to, and surpasses, all the hype. Hands down one of the most entertaining books I ever read.

Short stories by H.P. Lovecraft - I'd known about Lovecraft since I can first remember, as he is a household name which everyone is familiar with, and who's influence has reached every corner of modern fiction (music, games, films, books, you name it), but only recently did I actually start reading his works after deciding to buy a very nice three-volume collection of his shorty stories published by Wordsworth.

Holy shit... the guy's sheer dominance of the English language, how he conveys his characters' feelings and surroundings... it's fucking amazing. I always had an aversion to short stories in general, considering that they just didn't feel conclusive or immersive enough... but I've come to realize short stories are perfect for taking a lunch-break from work. Especially Lovecraft.

I guess I'll stop now.

tl;dr - u guise read anything decent this year?

#capickup resurrected within #tdmpickup (52 comments)

Attention CA Players!

You may have noticed that the bot in #capickup went offline some time ago due to the bot's creator being absent. As a solution, Lebanon un4x and United Kingdom Drayan have kindly offered to adapt #tdmpickup to also host 4v4 Clan Arena pickups in addition to the existing 4v4 TDM and 2v2 TDM gamemodes.

Each pickup game consists of 2 maps played, each with a roundlimit of 10, with one map picker on each team. The bot gets player's TDM and CA ratings directly from QLStats.net, and the new CA servers are already online. All you need to do is join #tdmpickup, and type:

!a ca

See you there!

tl;dr: Do you play QL frequently, but not #tdmpickup? If so, why not?

Hello beautiful people, and landwhales too. Europe #tdmpickup has always had the potential for having a larger number of active players, but it has come to my attention that channel activity is dwindling in recent times. This thread has two purposes:

1. To preemptively answer some questions players may have regarding #tdmpickup and promote it a bit:

2. To find out the main reasons that are holding active QL players back from playing in #tdmpickup.

To be honest every reason will be of interest because it's reached a point where every single player counts, so please go ahead and tell us why you don't play #tdmpickup, or why you think other people don't.

Obscene language is welcome if it helps you express yourself.

Player models lurching at low timescales (11 comments)
Posted by melechesh @ 05:22 CST, 20 November 2015 - iMsg
When I am playing demos in wolfcam the player models are actually "lurching" or jerking forwards when moving instead of moving or accelerating/decelerating steadily. You don't really notice this at timescale 1 but as soon as you start using lower timescales it becomes noticeable and pretty annoying.

Check the ragnarok scene:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksAFccuQRao

All my wolfcam cg_demosmooth options appear to be enabled and com_maxfps is 125 (not sure if that's relevant here). Upgraded wolfcam from 11.03 to 11.11, no difference.

I've seen some movies where low-timescale scenes are completely smooth.

How can I fix this?

I'm currently playing QL on 1024x768 (r_mode 12) on my 1366x768 resolution laptop. I set it up like this when I started using the laptop because I've always played on 4:3 so it felt right, however now I'm beginning to feel I could make it a bit wider. 1366 would be too wide, so I want a custom value of something in between, i.e 1150 / 1200.

The only problem is, when using r_customwidth 1150, it just shows it distorted, aligned to the left side with a fucked up view of the desktop on the remaining space on the right side.

tl;dr How do you use r_customWidth properly?

After seeing this thread I thought it would be nice to have a kind of blacklist with all known war criminals politicians jehova's witnesses quake players who are toxic to the game. This is to raise awareness about people who repeatedly abort / kick / harass other players and ruin perfectly good games as a result, (this thread is not for one-time / sporadic offenders, or people who just rage in a hilarious manner like our beloved impjeee).

If the thread catches on and gets good feedback with multiple people confirming a player's behaviour I'll try to keep it updated into a nice organized list, otherwise I'll just let it crash 'n' burn burn burn.

Hey guys. I've always wanted to make a fragmovie, so I actually made one. I present King of Fire, with frags by myself from the last few months. The first half is TDM, the second half is Duel and a bit of CA. I didn't have a lot of material to work with (or any previous video-editing experience for that matter), but it turned out almost exactly how I envisioned it and I'm really satisfied with the results.

Thanks to DDK for streaming it earlier and Maverick for the hosting!

Feedback is welcome, although somewhat futile, as I do not intend to make another movie. Movie-making is exciting and feels very rewarding, however it is also an incredibly demanding, exhausting and time-consuming experience. It also uses up an insane amount of HD space.

I am absolutely digging the fuck out of stoner/doom/psychedelic/occult rock with female vocals. Can't get enough of this shit:

Jex Thoth's voice is fucking amazing, the SubRosa album is probably the best thing I've heard in recent memory, and every The Devil's Blood album is also The Shit (sadly the composer killed himself recently, putting an end to the band). Unfortunately these 5 bands are all I have at the moment. Do you have any further recommendations other than these? I know some of you here know your shit. I bet brandan can come up with a few gems.

(Of course, feel free to post anything in this style that you would rate 10/10, not necessarily with female vocals. Until recently my experience with this stuff had basically been limited to Electric Wizard and Orange Goblin. Other bands I have been digging the fuck out of: All Them Witches, Black Pyramid, Bongripper, Bongzilla, Conan, Earthless, Goatsnake, Purple Hill Witch, Samsara Blues Experiment, The Sword, Ufomammut, Witch and Wo Fat)

QuakeLive Minor Improvements (132 comments)
Posted by melechesh @ 03:20 CDT, 31 May 2014 - iMsg
The idea of this thread is to propose minor improvements for QuakeLive and to bring bugs to the attention of SinkError, as by nature they should not require a lot of work to implement or fix. Large scale changes or new features that would require a substantial amount of work are not what this thread is about.

I'll get the ball a-rollin', feel free to contribute and I'll update OP accordingly, and scratch off the ones that get fixed / implemented.

Commands / Console / Chat

- Remove obsolete cvars

- The console should be enabled by default.

- The "/timeout", "/timein" and "/pause" commands should be recognizable and autocompletable in the console.

- An "/invite" command would be welcome to invite players directly from the console, who aren't necessarily on your friendlist.

- A "/ping" command would be welcome to show the current pings for all server locations.

- Add an option to disable in-game messages that are sent by friends from the browser chat,

- "Disconnected: 17 ConnUserDisconnected", what does this mean?

- Add an option to disable the in-game "friend is online/offline" notification messages.

- Show the location of the server you are connecting to in the actual connection screen.

- Make black font consistent across all the QL platform.

- Console messages such as "invalid password" and "waiting for authentication" should be added each time to a new console line instead of being stringed together without any spaces.

- The console history should go back a lot further. Currently, with all the system log messages when switching to another map, most (if not all) of the previous map's console log is lost. This can provide vital information such as map-picks and much needed drama. There could be an option to filter out everything except for chat messages and the output from one's own commands. An additional feature could be an option to autosave all console logs in text file format.

- Take advantage of the /players command to display more details

Map Bugs

- There are many instances on almost every map of Simple Items that feature an incorrect z-index, meaning that more distant items can sometimes overlap less distant ones (Image).

- On Blood Run, there is a clipping issue in the lower YA room, on the ledge above the advert billboard. (Image)

- On Sinister, there is a section of wall in the RA room that does not register any hitmarks. This includes the upper floor, lower floor, and the stairs too. (Image)

- On Silence, there is a small gap between the grid-wall in the RA room. You can shoot through this gap. (Image)

- On Retribution, in the RL room, the pillars' "hitboxes" are way larger than they should be. (Image)

- On Dreadful Place, there is a clipping issue at one of the doorways between the LG and the YA. (Image)

Voting / Spectating / Readyup

- Show when server owner overrides a vote.

- Allow a spectator to call a vote if nobody else is on the server.

- Spectators cannot switch POVs during a timeout.

- Disable voting menu option if voting isn't available yet (first few seconds after map change).

- The ability to callvote fraglimit and timelimit.

- Allow Duel spectators to join the queue during the game-finished period.

- Perhaps certain votes should be allowed even if voting is disabled on a server (such as shuffle, or kick)

- In Duel, if you are readied up but your opponent then disconnects, it should auto-unready yourself. Currently if a new opponent connects and joins, you will still be ready.

- Ability to vote a map Abort / Restart

- On pro-spawned free servers, the unavailable maps should not appear in the vote menu.

- Instead of simply saying "X called a vote" in chat/console, it could specify what type of vote was called, for reference.

- Implement a queue system for spectators in team games. At present you need to manually keep track of the order in which players connect to determine who is first in line, and people skip in line.

- Sometimes when joining an empty server, you cannot call a vote through the UI because it says there is already a vote in progress. Using callvote in the console overrides this, so it's a UI issue.

- The Shuffle function can sometimes be very stubborn and maintain the exact same teams despite players repeatedly requesting a shuffle. Regardless of whether the system thinks this is the best shuffle, if the players repeatedly vote a shuffle, a shuffle should happen.

- When in queue on a Duel server, you are forced to re-join the queue after performing a vid_restart (potentially losing your position in the queue), because this prompts the server menu. Ideally a vid_restart should not prompt this menu.

- After attempting to vote a map during the period when voting isn't actually allowed, when trying to call the same vote again, even though the previously voted map still appears as selected on the map list, the actual map that is selected is the first one in the list (Aerowalk I believe).

- In Duel, players who want to be annoying by not readying up can still hit F3 and then join spectators during the countdown, rarely giving enough time to /callvote kick.

Gameplay / Rulesets / Server settings

- Give pro users the ability to spawn CTF servers with different overtime settings.

- Give pro users the ability to choose a MinimumSkillRating and MaximumSkillRating when spawning a server.

- Give pro users the ability to change CA round countdown length when spawning a server..

- Players can drop due to inactivity during mid-game timeouts / pauses.

- Add a server setting which auto-pauses the match if a player 999's for more than X seconds, and if possible preserve the game-state if the player actually times out so that the match can resume without any issues when they reconnect.

Front End / Browser / Website

- Implement the item and power-up pickups for match summaries.

- Show individual player's number of Humiliation awards for each match together with Excellent and Impressive awards.

- The friend list could benefit from a search function, alphabetical order by default, and possibly other filter options.

- Add a list of available QL streams, much like ESR's current stream box.

- Make sure "Featured Profile" only includes players that are actually worth mentioning, and not accounts with 0 matches played.

- A server's skill rating also appears to take into account players that are spectating, which can be confusing. It should probably take into account only players in-game and in-queue, or ideally show an individual skill rating icon next to each player's name.

- The server preview popup window should disappear if interacting with the Server filters.

- Implement an option to disable the browser chat beep.

- When looking at the Live Game Info for a duel by hovering over the server, it can sometimes give confusing feedback regarding who is actually playing and what the scores are, depending on whether any of your friends are in the server, and also depending on who is queued up to play and who is just spec. For example it will show a "0" score for someone who is queued up. It should show "SPEC (x)" with X being their position in the queue.

- With the current server browser default settings which hides certain servers that do not meet the criteria, many world regions will show very few or no available servers to play. Further info here.

- Allow a way to view messages from players who go offline before you are able to read them.

System / Server Issues

- Flood protection is causing several issues as described here.

- /devmap doesn't work anymore when you're already connected to a server (Gets stuck on "awaiting gamestate...").

- Fix server lag when a player connects to the server.

- Ignore timenudge settings on LAN servers.

- You have to restart the client when your IP changes.

- The QL engine classifies all CPUs superior or equivalent to Pentium III as a Pentium III. (Example).

- I've noticed that having Photoshop open in the background prevents me from bringing up the in-game menu in QL (both full screen and windowed mode). In other words, pressing ESC does nothing. I'm not sure what the exact cause of this, whether other people have detected the same issue, or even whether anything can be done about it on QL's end, but it's worth mentioning. (In this case, Adobe Photoshop CS2, Windows 8, Intel HD Graphics 4000).

- When leaving QL open in windowed mode and causing the QL window to lose focus (usually by alt+tabbing between other applications), sometimes the QL window just "greys out", forcing one to restart QL. Again, I'm not sure if there is anything that can be done about this on QL's end, but it's worth mentioning. (In this case, Windows 8, Intel HD Graphics 4000). (Example). Current workaround: User input still works, so you can "blindly" bring down the console and vid_restart to solve the issue.

HUD

- When accessing the Friend List menu from in-game, the intuitive thing to do is click the red button in the lower left corner to return to the match, however that button is located elsewhere and is less visible. Ideally the Friend List menu UI could be given a decent visual upgrade.

- Adapt the spectator HUD so that in Duel it shows both player's health and armor.

- When spectating team modes, show blue/red "markers" for each player, similar to the yellow triangles that appear for team-mates when you're playing in-game.

- Make .menu crosshairs compatible with cg_crosshairhitstyle

- Implement advanced weapon stats, similar to OSP +wstats (Example). Initially discussed here.

Sounds

- Some sounds appear to have substantial delays, for example, the time between the moment a flag is captured to the time you hear the soundfile, or the time between getting the first frag in a Duel and hearing the "you have taken the lead" announcement can be of several seconds delay.

- Sounds that are emitted by a player can sometimes be heard on the teleport exit even though the trigger for the sound happened before the player entered the teleport. For example, on Blood Run you hear the lower YA armor pickup sound instead of the teleport sound (?) when the enemy exits the teleport. Possibly dependent on connection.

- Setting s_volume to values higher that 1 causes distortion issues.

Scoreboard

- Show server host in the scoreboard itself

- The Premium scoreboard does not currently show how long a player has been connected to the server.

- In Duel, if two players have the same accuracy for a weapon, instead of greying both accuracies out on the scoreboard, it could highlight them both in white.

- Many times upon finishing a match, the pings in the scoreboard are not accurate at all. I'm not sure whether this is the average ping the player had over the duration of the match, or whether the server just gets lagged while processing the pings in the last frames of the match, but either way it should be a more accurate representation of each player's pings. If a player 999s for 5 seconds it's going to distort the average a lot.

- The end-of-game scoreboard should preserve all data regardless of whether players disconnect or not. Currently, when a player forfeits or disconnects, the three awards (most accurate, most damage, best item control) are all attributed to the next best player on the server. Also, in Duel it will replace the winner with a spectator if the winner quits, and sometimes the winner's player model will show the current enemymodel instead of the real model used by the winner. It would be quite useful to keep all 8 players names and stats visible on the scoreboard at the end of team games too.

- I'm not sure what the purpose of removing one frag from your score is if you forfeit a match is, but if it's a bug it should be fixed. Likewise, I don't see the point of -999 for quitting a match.

Administration

- New QL accounts should require e-mail validation. It looks like id software are convinced this isn't necessary so I would love to know the reasons behind this decision, just out of curiosity.

For Funsies

Every time. Every single time without fail. It is so disheartening I feel compelled to write a journal entry about it, for the future entertainment of search engine crawlers.

Every time a song comes on during a QL stream break... I think "Hey, this song is great, I've never really heard anything quite like this before, so atmospheric, so emotional, so well composed and thought out. This caster has good taste". I instantly check the twitch chat to search for people asking for the song name, and other peoples subsequent responses (and yes, I do still giggle at the sandstorms). If nobody requests or mentions it, I make a mental note to seek out the streamer later on IRC to ask them.

Then, after 30 seconds, out of fucking nowhere, no matter what style or genre, no matter how amazing the atmospheric buildup was, the masterpiece is ruined in an instant.

WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB

What's wrong with these twats? Can't they even realize that their composition is brilliant before the meaningless wubs start? They are literally meaningless.

Gets me every time.

Every. Fucking. Time.

Just to be clear here, I'm not lashing out directly at dubstep. I'm aware people like that type of music, whatevers. What rustles my jimmies is specifically the musical equivalent of painting something like this and then doing this to it. I can't comprehend how they would consciously be willing to sacrifice true beauty just for the sake of being labelled within the latest trend. Probably to sell more? What a waste.

QL issue on startup (9 comments)
Posted by melechesh @ 18:42 CDT, 11 April 2014 - iMsg
I start up QL, initial splashscreen with server-status, latest news, k1llsen jumping around Repent and the Play button load fine as usual, but when clicking play it stays on this screen forever.

Bringing down the console doesn't show any issues, and by trying /map bloodrun I can load a practice map without any problems, however when I rightclick the QL taskbar icon and click QL again it brings up the q3 blue-style console, which shows the following log:

Quake Live  0.1.0.851 win-x86 Mar  3 2014 15:57:56
----- FS_Startup -----
Current search path:
C:\Windows/baseq3

----------------------
0 files in pk3 files
----- CL_Shutdown -----
-----------------------
Couldn't load default.cfg

I tried copying my qzconfig.cfg as a default.cfg but the issue persists. Nothing has changed, other than the fact that I switched my router on and off some hours earlier.

I'm guessing "Current search path: C:\Windows/baseq3" is the cause of the issue here, but I have no idea why it's looking for baseq3 in there, or how to fix it, or even why it would let me load a practice map in the first place.

Anyone else experienced same issue?

Always been a big fan of At The Gates and was lucky enough to see them live in 2008 during their reunion tour. Best motherfucking concert ever.

Hopefully they don't do what Immortal did with All Shall Fall and churn out something slightly disappointing and anticlimatic... and to be honest Slaughter Of The Soul is going to be fuckin hard to beat.

Good / Cheap Laptop brands (12 comments)

I'm seeking to buy a new laptop for under 500 €. I'm looking for a general-purpose laptop, not a gaming-specific laptop, although ability to run QL would be a bonus (my current shitty laptop can run QL so I assume there's no problem there). It doesn't need a nice video card, I would appreciate extra performance instead.

I will not be travelling with the laptop, and as for screensize I would like 15.6 (or more), So size and weight are not an issue.

I'll decide the exact model myself based on the specs, but I'm looking for a trustworthy brand.

Name a brand!

I also intend to eventually get round to reading "A Game Of Thrones" and hope I don't accidentally see or hear any spoilers before doing so. Also lined up are "The Engines Of God" by Jack McDevitt and "At Home" by Bill Bryson.

... direct invites to password-secure servers didn't request the password?

The password isn't really necessary for someone who has already been given permission to join the server anyway, and if they aren't made aware of the password, they can't send it to all their buddies.

Might require allowing pro accounts to invite more than 3 players for this method to work properly, but for now 2 players and 1 streamer can be invited with 100% guarantee that no random specs will join.

Any thoughts?

Not much drama going on guise, and that premium acc thread turned into an eastern european trainwreck, so let's pretend luppi's identity is important and throw around some shitty rumours to keep ourselves entertained.

Here's what we've (I've) got to work on so far:

- Syncerror said he's a "known semi-pro" who has "attended LANs", I'm guessing he's matched IP addresses. This means Luppi has played QL before, otherwise Sync wouldn't have an IP address to match him with. Then again, sync might be making this shit up, just as much in dire need of drama as some of us are (I am).

- If Sync's sussed him out, I doubt he's cheating... ALTHOUGH IT WOULDN'T BE THE FIRST TIME SYNC ALLOWS A CHEATER BACK INTO QL OLOLOLO AMIRITE GUISE¿!!?!!

- Anyone observed what ping has he got on each server? This would help track down his approximate location with some 1337 CSI triangulation.

- What top players HASN'T he played against yet? If he's a "semi-pro" he'll be 2000+ elo 4 realz, and provided his original account is on QLranks, the more duels he plays the more it will narrow it down, although its up to sirax/szr to analyze the data because afaik public only has access to top 5 defeated opponents

- movement isn't his strong point

IRC channel matchmaking (18 comments)
Posted by melechesh @ 15:18 CST, 12 December 2012 - iMsg
In the absence of a built-in duel detective, I propose using IRC as a means to rapidly find equally skilled duel partners, by having one channel represent each skill level.

The channels could be named in the following manner, or similar:

#1200elo
#1300elo
#1400elo
etc...

So players can idle in the channel(s) they feel they will most likely find worthy opponents and use said channels to request duels by simply stating their preferred locations, "duel de fr uk". Two players in the same channel looking for a decent duel should take a matter of seconds to find eachother.

The idea originally came to me for TDM after seeing many people spam "4v4 high pm" or whatever in a variety of channels. If we had the following channels:

#tdm4v4high
#tdm4v4mid
#tdm4v4low

... and every clan officer joined the channel corresponding to their preferred skill, clan wars could be set up with increased frequency and reduced delay, me thinks. Same could apply to practically every gametype.

Maybe this has been tried before and failed, or maybe specific channels exist for this that I'm not aware of. I apologize in advance if I've just wasted everyone's time.

Whatcha thinks?

December Map Rotation (24 comments)
Posted by melechesh @ 09:13 CST, 3 December 2012 - iMsg
The December 2012 Standard arena rotation is now online. As always, on the first Monday of each month, id software will be cycling the Standard arena pool. Rather than only having access to the same standard arenas day in and day out, each month they will now feature 21 arenas selected as playable for Standard-level matches.

Newly released arenas will remain exclusive for at least three months, but every other arena is eligible to be included in the cycle.

Av3k Appreciation Thread (185 comments)
Posted by melechesh @ 17:56 CST, 23 November 2012 - iMsg
In the 11 years I have followed Q3 and QL, tonight was the saddest "e-sports moment" I have ever experienced. Yes, I'm a Cooller fanboy, and his retirement was "sad", so to say, but Av3k's brief speech was several magnitudes harder to swallow than Cooller's long-since-expected translated announcement.

Well of course it fucking was! Not only was it completely unexpected, but Av3k is, for me, and I dare say 99% of the Quake community, the most heartwarming guy to have ever graced the world of Quake since the early days, with a positive attitude, charisma and friendly character only rivalled by Cypher himself. His actual Quake skills do not even need to be mentioned here, everyone knows that the name Av3k is synonymous with aggressive and intelligent pure Quake skill.

To see this grown man who we have all supported without exception over the years, announce a sudden and solemn retirement from Quake out of the blue, motivated primarily by his unsatisfaction with his own performance just hours earlier, is a truly heartwrenching sight. The amount of love for Av3k pouring out of the stream chat at that moment was a monument to this. If you disagree, this thread isn't for you, and I truly hope you die in a fire.

He was on the verge of tears, and anyone who has Quake running through their veins who witnessed that speech no doubt was too. Not tears of weakness, but tears of nostalgia, heroism and above all appreciation for him consistently being not only a magnificent Quaker but also a great human being. Don't deny it, faggots.

Even when he was playing against each of our own personal favourite Quakers, we never felt bad if he won, not a single thought of hate towards Av3k ever crossed our minds, and even after he stated his dislike for the average ESR user mentality and thread content, we somehow never took offense. How can you take offense to such an awesome dude?

He was right after all, which made the part where he apologized for his famous comments even sadder. He didn't need to apologize! We ARE a bunch of dicks. For fucks sake he was the only one , as far as I know, with enough balls to come out and say it how it is.

One small thing that stuck with me more than anything else is how he suggested that he didn't have much of a life because all he has ever done was Quake. Well let's let him know that he was more than just a Quaker, he was one of the most inspiring and talented players of the greatest multiplayer game ever invented by humanity, and that is quite an achievement, and even if due to stereotypes and general uneducation our society is currently too retarded to recognize this fact as common knowledge, at least we recognize it as a community, and we are many.

THANK YOU MACIEJ, FOR BEING WHO YOU ARE

Needless to say, we all wish Av3k the best in his future.

I've lost track of where I was going with this but my original intentions were just to make an Av3k Appreciation Thread where we can all show that the community loves him like a true broheim, and will do forever, so feel free to let your feelings run free while you show Av3k that his pain is understood by every true Quaker out there. Post pics & fragmovies too! And someone make Av3k the greatest motherfucking fragmovie ever made!!!

No homo.

His official account just shows one match played in the last 2 months, does anybody have any information about his training? Has he even been training at all? Has he been undergoing nanobiological enhancements at a top secret underground facility in central Siberia? What's going on!?

In a hollywood movie he would make the most epic comeback ever, take 1st prize and retire liek a baws... but for this to happen he would indeed have to have been training intensely for months... so someone *must* know what kind of shape he is in.

Do tell!

tl;dr - how is cooller preparing for DHS?

For all you web developers out there, what is your preferred web hosting + domain registrar company? I'm currently using OVH, and I'm pretty satisfied with them, although I'm sure there are better alternatives to be found.

So, based on recent happenings (big update on the horizon, big LAN in Eindhoven, DH still supporting QL, trillions of community guides, zotac still going strong, 2gd's show, etc...), I'm under the impression QL is slowly recovering from it's terminal disease.

They will have to add anticheat and fix the whole subscription system for it to be finally discharged from hospital, but progress is visible, amirite?

Remembering the good old days, a gem popped into my neural cortex! CPM1a! Okay so I only used to play it with bots on VQ3 physics but... what fun it was.

Does the community generally dislike this map? I don't recall seeing anyone mention it once since I started playing QL :/

It would be nice if the ESR Virtual Betting box were not so big, just have all 10 users with the minimized list style, and move it to the last position. Schedule and Coverage should be first.

Arenas Season 2 Cancelled (3 comments)
Posted by melechesh @ 16:12 CST, 21 November 2011 - iMsg
Arenas is a fan-made series of CGI episodes related to the Doom and Quake series, and Season 2 was in production up until the 18th of November when Joe Goss posted this on the official website @ http://www.quake-rebellion.com/ :

[...] Unfortunately, the budget could not be realized, and we've had to close down work on Season 2 indefinitely. We're still very proud to have Season 1 complete, and hope the fans look at our project as complete over time. Thanks to everyone, we're still around. We'll still be making some shorts for the channel, but don't look forward to Season 2.

Definition of "Group of Death" (32 comments)

I don't quite understand the meaning of Group Of Death. What exactly makes one group "of death" and the others "not of death"?

Specific examples are welcome :D
