Diabotical Kickstarter successful (83 comments)
Posted by earth @ 10:45 CDT, 1 September 2016 - iMsg
Today the Diabotical (formerly Reborn) Kickstarter campaign reached the end of its one month public fundraising period.

The project, initiated by The GD Studio and fronted by James "2GD" Harding, raised a total of £168,314 from 6,951 backers.

Having surpassed the £110,000 baseline amount to fund the game's development after just 4 days, the Kickstarter went on to fund both the developers stretch goals; Co-op Race and Co-op Survival.

Diabotical, a project that began formally in mid 2012, will now continue development, with beta release projected for June 2017. After initial rumours and hype surrounding the game, fans became frustrated by an apparent lack of progress on the game, however the recent Kickstarter release and trailer seems to have convinced or at least excited many in the hardcore AFPS playerbase about the game's future.

Once released, Diabotical will be competing with other titles to revive and modernise the AFPS genre.

As of 30th August, Diabotical developers 2GD and FireFrog are running an AMA for the game (Ask Me Anything) over on Reddit.

Players who missed out on the Kickstarter campaign can still make paypal donations to receive beta access on the Kickstarter page until 5th September.

Xbox play anywhere (5 comments)
Posted by earth @ 05:15 CDT, 5 July 2016 - iMsg
Microsoft have announced a service called Play Anywhere that allows you to play a purchased title on both xbox one and pc, syncing saves and achievements.
Now when you own an Xbox Play Anywhere digital title, it’s yours to play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC.
Pick up where you left off on another Xbox One or Windows 10 PC, bringing all your saves, game add-ons, and achievements with you

I'm no big console player so this doesn't affect me at all, but I'm interested to hear other views on this model.

Just loaded elder and I can see the edges of the fog. I'm using high-picmip, but I could never see this before. Something to do with the latest update?

HAMMER UK duel servers - Invalid pk3 (10 comments)
Posted by earth @ 07:35 CDT, 10 April 2016 - iMsg
I can't join them - ever. I'm always kicked for invalid pk3 files, but not from any other server. I have some custom maps in my baseq3, but that shouldn't cause a kick.

If any admins see this, or anyone who knows them does, perhaps this thread will be of use. Ta

GTKRadiant - spinning 3D view (4 comments)
Posted by earth @ 16:01 CST, 5 November 2015 - iMsg
Dear regarded mapping community (inb4 reflex sniggers),

When I right click in the 3D view window of Radiant, in the x-y plane the view rotates like crazy. Oddly it's just fine in the other two planes.

I have tried 2x 100% fresh installs to check I didn't mess something up.

Looks like I'm not alone, either.

here someone posted a fix but the link is dead and the page is archived.
here nobody found a fix

Will have to use arrow keys for now :(

Does anyone have any ideas to fix this?

Posted by earth @ 16:59 CDT, 21 April 2015 - iMsg
QUAKE LIVE Update #23 brings four new arenas, two new announcers (plus other miscellaneous VO tweaks) and five new medals to the game. Much discussed changes are also featured such as single weapon loadouts and the option to use autohop in all gamemodes (toggled with cg_autohop), as well as an admin/OP UI for server management.

Windows 10 (60 comments)
Posted by earth @ 16:49 CDT, 17 March 2015 - iMsg
So, it looks like windows 10 is on its way fairly soon - microsoft felt the need to email me a link to what is possibly the most annoying/vague/bullshit advertising video I've ever watched to stir up some hype. Anyway, it's free so I'm not massively bothered at this point in time.

Has anyone installed the trial or have opinions on win10 to share?

Mouse skipping problem (22 comments)
Posted by earth @ 18:46 CDT, 13 March 2015 - iMsg
Essentially, my mouse has started skipping occasionally. Yes, it's wireless but this never used to happen; the mouse is just over a year old and has led a very sheltered life. I'm using a sharkoon mousepad, tried different surfaces which made no difference. Using windows 8.1 with logitech setpoint software. I tried powering the mouse up fully, which made no difference. I also tried cleaning the sensor.

I wonder if any of the kind and knowledgeable citizens of esr could cast their opinion on the problem (and recommend me a proper gaming mouse while they're at it).

Any help is much appreciated :)

Is video gaming a spectator sport? - BBC (11 comments)
Posted by earth @ 17:50 CDT, 25 August 2014 - iMsg
Just seen this video on the BBC website. I felt like sharing it because it makes watching gaming sound new/unusual/minority. Key quotes:

"Sitting in front of a computer all day playing computer games is one thing, but sitting watching other people play video games, all day; really!?"

"There are even commentators!"

Someone really didn't do his research. Talking gaming in general, PewDiePie is the most subscribed youtube channel. Minecraft videos get millions of views. Amazon bought twitch for $1bn just today.

Obviously I'm exactly one of the esport spectators that the reporter talks about, so I was a bit taken aback. Wonder what others think of this 'report'.

Quake isn't a shooter (41 comments)
Posted by earth @ 05:27 CDT, 8 July 2014 - iMsg
Ok, what this guy says should be no shock, but he does bring up an interesting point.

Is quake a shooter? The fundamental objective is to frag your opponent, and that's realistically only going to happen if you shoot them...

I'd actually looked for a video like this so I can convince people quake is far more than simply shooting people.

Discuss

(posted in GG because it's relevant to all quakes, and it might be interesting to have some non-quaker's opinions)

EDIT: author of the video responded to my comment here and says that he coached "aAa" for 5 years and got to WCG Korea 3 times (UT) before bowing to the king, quake. His inactive esr account is here.

While a watched kettle never boils, fortunately a watched frag movie does render, and United Kingdom earth_quake proudly presents the members of Paradox Clan in their namesake frag movie. Sit back, crank the volume up and enjoy a year's worth of frags!

Please note that the YouTube quality is not optimal (and the video is blocked in Germany), so for the best experience please download the video. The 'teaser' is intended to persuade you to download the video, rather than streaming it.

WolfcamQL Complete Tutorial (24 comments)
Posted by earth @ 05:42 CST, 7 December 2013 - iMsg
Hi all!

For prospective or current users of WolfcamQL (full thread here, unofficial website here), I've written a 20 page tutorial which covers pretty much all of wolfcam (apart from motion blurring, advanced freecamming and there's very little on recording/advanced config settings). I really hope people find this useful, I've been meaning to write it for a long time.

Contents are as follows:

Document - Download (WolfcamQL tutorial.docx) (dropbox.com) 66.6kB

Document - Download (WolfcamQL tutorial.pdf) (dropbox.com) 587kB

Please distribute as much as possible, but credit me (United Kingdomearth_quake). I've written some sections entirely, others are compiled and re-written from different sources.

I hope this is helpful! :)

all QL textures compilation for Wolfcam (13 comments)
Posted by earth @ 16:41 CDT, 14 August 2013 - iMsg
A while ago I compiled all (or pretty damn near) of the files found inside the .pk3 files. The result is an incredibly useful tool for movie makers, or indeed anyone who wants to modify the appearence of maps, players and objects while watching back demos.

I could be wrong, but I don't think this idea has been exploited to its full potential by movie makers. Though I appreciate that non-default textures in movies may be off-putting for the hardcore quaker, movie makers tend to exploit any other option for visual customisation but leave textures alone.

How it works:
When wolfcam runs, it constantly calls upon the files that "skin" maps, weapons, ammo etc. These files are mainly located in the pakXX.pk3 files, but some are strewn around in random map files (hence why my compilation may not be quite complete). By de-crypting the pk3 files and copying the relevent contents into "wolfcamQL/wolfcam-ql" wolfcam instead looks to those files (instead of in "wolfcamQL/baseq3"), meaning you have easy access to the files that decorate quake live's interior!

1. Download the .zip file:

Mirror - Auri
Mirror - uZu

(cheers to auri and uZu for hosting and mirroring my file)

2. Unzip. You will notice loose in the initial structure a .jpeg called "howto" (Clickme). Nope, this does not come with quake, I put it there! Folders with a red dot are the ones that you have just downloaded, and this is where you need to put them! As you can see I'm using wolfwhisperer, but this doesn't effect anything. If you already have some of these folders, you can just merge them.

3. Now if you see a texture in wolfcam that you dislike or want to brighten etc you can do something about it! You need to locate the relevent file (try searching keywords, and most map textures are in textures/[base_wall,base_floor,gothic_block]). Worst case senario you have to type /shaderlist in the map, which outputs a whole list of all the shaders. Not fun.

After browsing for a while you will get the idea. Load the image into photoshop and edit away!

Useful locations:
"textures/ad_content" - Yup easiest way to override ingame ads ever. Simples.
"icons" and "menu/icons" - you might want to edit the weapon and item icons
"menu/medals" - can change impressive, excellent etc
"models/ammo" - edit grenade and rocket! Hint: cpma grenade...wink wink...(http://gfx.quakeworld.nu/details/289/cpma-grenade/)
"models/weaphits" - get really good and edit the rocket explosion. You'll want to know about the fx file first.
"models/weapons2" - make a skin for weapons...

If you're getting too far into this you will want to download a software such as blender that allows you to edit skins by projecting the skin onto the model (.md3 file).

Maybe this helps anyone looking to take movie making a step further; the secret is out now, it's up to you! I hope this instigates/facilitates more customized quake movies. If people like this post I may write one on fx scripting as well (although I am by no means a master).

Any questions I'm more than happy to answer!
