Help with PC build (15 comments)
Posted by qr @ 16:44 CDT, 27 March 2016 - iMsg
I do okay with Gaming builds, but my old man needs a decent build for graphic and video editing.

He needs to be able to run Illustrator, Photoshop, Vegas/Premier and some other misc programs at the same time while dealing with 50-100gig image files. No gaming will be done.

Target budget is about $800, especially considering he's using a BestBuy $500 laptop from a year or two ago, anything is basically an improvement. SSD for programs would be cool with HDD for storage. And I've got a Hyper 212 EVO Cooler Master laying around unopened, but I doubt it fits in a mini tower?

And he likes the idea of a mini tower for easy mobility, unless there's a decent laptop on the market. He has peripherals, and it doesn't need to look nice.

Have at it!

The movie thread reminded me of this.

My buddy sent me a scratch track him and his guitarist recorded. I decided to watch a video while listening. Of the 400+ videos I've got, I decided to watch Mercurial. Half way through the video and song, this happened:

Even the last few seconds are great.

Illuminati must be real.

Guide to make good Arena FPS and $$$ (21 comments)

Step 1: Release crummy CoD/CS clone that everyone plays (but better in the sense that it attracts more idiots)
Step 2: Wait for player-base to build.
Step 3: Series of patches over the course of 1-2 years:
3a - Customizable content/HUD, noob friendly drag/drop widget style like android phone
3b - Add cheesy UT movement perks like the new CoD or Titanfall or whatever
3c - Introduce health/armor items in map
3d - Add weapons to map
3e - Upgrade UT movement to strafejumping
.... eventually you will just have Quake again.
Step 4: Watch hundreds of thousands of people unwittingly play Quake.

It's so easy even I could think of it.

Monitors, again... (85 comments)
Posted by qr @ 19:35 CDT, 29 June 2014 - iMsg
I've been diggin' around. I built a new comp (not ordered yet) and I'm wondering if monitors are REALLY starting to compete with CRT's. Mine is starting to go out (although I think something is just loose or a bad connection somewhere). I figure if I'm spending the money on a comp, I'll just throw in a monitor with it...

Blurbusters Lightboost:
Supported Monitors: ASUS: VG248QE, ASUS VG278H, ASUS VG278HE,
BENQ XL2411T, BENQ XL2420T (Euro), BENQ XL2420TE (US/CAN), BENQ XL2720T

The only people I know with 120hz monitors have the BENQ XL2420TE, they're pretty happy with it, but they aren't as nitpicky as some of us CRT users. I was going to go with it, but it appears to be somewhat out of date (and out of stock) compared to the BENQ XL2420Z v2 Firmware?

I just want to know if any of these really perform better than CRT, or if they beat CRT in certain regards, but not others. Is the BENQ XL2420Z really worth $100 more than the TE or the ASUS VG248QE? Price isn't too much of an issue, but I'm conscientious about it.

Mouse accel predicament (27 comments)
Posted by qr @ 22:51 CDT, 24 March 2013 - iMsg
For 11 years I've played with 25 sensitivity, and XP sensitivity at 8/11. The mouse I use is years older than XP itself. **

I never got rid of mouse accel, I didn't even know about it until 5-6 years into serious gaming. Now I'm quite comfortable with it.

My problem is that I recently lowered my sensitivity from 25 to 10 in CS:S to play surf maps, and raised my accel from 1.05 to 1.1 so my quick flicks/strafing felt the same instinctually.

Now that I'm craving to go back and play some Quake/TFC, I'd like to match my new sensitivity in XP itself. I've read through the MarkC guides and checked a few other threads/options out, but I don't really have DPI(?)

Is there an easy way to just mimic the curve knowing my before and after sensitivities?

That's right, it has a ball.
I've played on several high-end 'gaming' mice and they all feel cheap. Like Fast-n-Furious vs a Steamroller. This guy still has another solid 20 years in it!

Thanks for any help!
