I have had a few responses back and forth with MH2 on this now, so I apologise for the long reply as it's a summary.

He says that we have shared passwords with desertsands.

She has been our sitter on several occasions and we hers. We (Andrew and Eerik, I am his double) have never logged in to her account otherwise.

It's possible that she has our password. However, she wouldn't have logged in with it recently (post rw/tullia banning) and I would be amazed if she's done it even once since the eerik account was banned in June. We learnt our lesson then and have not done it since.

DS is from the UK and Eerik + I are in Estonia. There's no way that DS has logged in from this country, I'm sure a whois lookup on the IP will show that.

Can you tell me when that happened? I am 99% sure that it was BEFORE we were banned in June for this. Once we were banned then, we stopped. I am sure that we have not logged into anyone elses since that time.

If their logins were before our earlier ban, then I believe we've already server our punishment. If the logins were after that, all I can offer in our defence is that we didn't do anything ourselves. If someone else had our password we cannot control if they logged in to our account. We have been acting in good faith.

I don't dispute that you have more information on this than us. I'm not arguing, but I simply don't see how this happened. I have never logged into DS account, and neither has eerik.

The only times we've been on it are when we've been set as sitter, which has happened multiple times. DS says that nobody even has her password.

I worked for the security department at PokerStars (the world's largest online poker site), and I know you have a lot of data on us. I also know that people who lie to security are always obvious. I am being completely honest with you in my replies. I have never logged into DS account, and neither has Eerik.

I do not have DS' password. Eerik does not have DS' password. DS does not have our password (she says, though I don't trust her as I do Eerik).

The system should show us logging in to DS account as sitter. If the system is showing us logging in to DS account without being a sitter, then your system has to have a bug in it. We have added and removed sitters dozens of times in the last week, perhaps this causes a problem? Some are suggesting in our IRC channel that it may be a bug related to same computer usage?

That's all I can say on this I guess. I hope that you look again at the data and look again at your system. I find it hard to believe your system DOES have such a bug as it's been going for so long.

I am a sensible man, I do not have a problem admitting guilt if I am guilty. My word means a lot to me though, and I did not break the rules as you are stating.

Somebody else may have logged into our account, but we have not logged in to anyone elses since we were banned in June.

I've just been on the phone to my double. He says it's possible DS has our password from ages ago. We were banned for pw sharing in early June, and have not done it since.

I would not be surprised to hear that she logged into our account before that time. However, since we were banned for it before, we haven't done anything like it since.

It seems to me that we've been banned for something we've already been punished for. I trust this fits in with the data on your side? I cannot think of another reason why it would show up otherwise.

I have not as far as I remebmer(and this is a good 2 months at least) logged in as desertsands(a she, from the uk) using her password, infact, i might have never done this, even when we were banned for password sharing in june.
Weve had desertsands as our sitter many times, we change them regularly and only have 2 for the night even tho its WW time. Our members are staying up countless hours in the middle of the night just to not break the password sharing rule.

So I had a good start to June. WSOP numbers: 6350 or so. My savings account: Happier with me. My desire to play poker: Sorely lacking.

Quite often when I put in a lot of hands one month, I lose all desire to play the next. I think I have an inbuilt function to only be able to play 25000 hands per month, if I ever put in anymore, it comes out of next month's total.

This doesn't stop me from still wanting to make some money on the side though, so I turned to blackjack. Many winning poker players have serious "leaks" - ways they consistently lose money. Blackjack is one of them. A friend of mine wagered over $1m in May, when his sallary is only a couple percent of that (he won, swore off blackjack, but was last seen playing $100/hand in Vegas...)

I've never indulged, and infact the reason I win at poker is because of that disicpline. So when I took up blackjack for the month, I had good reason.

There are hundreds or perhaps even thousands of online casinos out there. The differences are really pretty small - who cares if you're playing on 888 or BetFred just so long as they actually pay out. You're inevitably going to lose your money, and you probably aren't going to spend much time on these sites. So, they need to have good ways to attract players - bonusses.

There are many sites around that will offer you 100% up to your deposit amount, typically with a Ł100 or $100 ceiling. You then have to wager a certain amount, and the money is yours. Let's say I make a Ł100 deposit, with 100% bonus. I have to wager a total of Ł5,000, and the Ł100 is mine.

Blackjack is typically the game with the smallest house edge. The house has a 0.5% edge over the player, so effectively, if you bet Ł200, the house keeps Ł1 in the long run. If you bet Ł5,000 the house takes 0.5% on average, Ł25.

They don't just hand you Ł75 though, there is variance to contend with. Sometimes you'll cash out nothing, sometimes you'll cash out a lot more. It's only on average that it's worth Ł75. If you play Ł1 hands of blackjack (yawn), you're more likely to get a number closer to Ł75, but Ł75 is still the number. If you play Ł100 hands of blackjack, it's overwhelmingly likely that you'll go broke, but sometimes you'll cash out a LOT. On average, Ł75.

I calculate my "money making time" to be worth at least Ł20/hour. I don't spend time on anything less, because that's pretty much what I'd get at work doing overtime, and that's a guaranteed amount that probably has benefits outside itself (i.e, they like me more). I've no interest in playing 5k hands of Ł1 blackjack over 10 hours to get Ł7.50 per hour. I therefore compromise and play Ł5/hand. That's about two hours of blackjack for an average of Ł75, a perfectly respectable return.

My variance is higher: I have a decent chance of going broke, and a decent chance of cashing a good total out, but my expectation is good. So this is how I spent my July so far:



That's a total of Ł1055 in, Ł2024 out. It's probably about Ł50k playthrough, so 10k hands of blackjack played, which is about 20 hours, for ~Ł50/hour. I probably ran a little bit above expectation, but even so, I would quite like to put in one more casino to try to hit Ł1k for the month from blackjack....

The thing is that blackjack is a pretty boring game. You play the perfect strategy and it's quite entertaining while you learn it, then that's it, it's tedious. You get annoyed at the variance and you can't justify it like you can in poker, because in poker you know you're making positive expectation bets where the long run is infinite. For blackjack bonusses, there's a horizon, there's a wall stopping you from reaching the long run - unless you want to play negative expectation blackjack, in which case you're gambling, not trying to make money.

So now it's back to poker for a while. I'm going to learn a little bit of Omaha, and put in a couple of hours at $200 NL, but nothing special. It's a bit easier to motivate myself when I'm running good though, which seems to be the theme of the month...

Now I can retire young

I managed to finish my 40,000 hands, though the results weren't exactly impressive:



So, I managed to play for 68 hours and win a total of $698.95, for $10.24 per hour. Now, considering in October I played a similiar amount of time and won well over $200 per hour, this isn't a brilliant result. I can do overtime and get paid four times this much.

On the plus side, I get 27% of that rake paid back, so +$921.01. Then I can add the prop bets, for +$700. Therefore, poker in June made me $2319.96, which is a much more respectable figure. That's $34.11 per hour, which is close to what I could get at work if I did that much overtime.

So, the moral to the story? Don't make prop bets about how many hands you'll play that month. Often in poker things go badly for you. It's extraordinarily difficult to continue playing a good game when this happens: You call too often perhaps, or raise when you shouldn't. To combat this, I normally take time off the game. When I have to average 1300 hands per day, I cannot do this, and the results speak for themselves. Breaking even over 26k hands at $100 NL is not a good thing, I know I can beat games four or six times as big.

Many poker players know that it's a game of psychology, but perhaps a lot of them are not aware that it's largely a matter of your OWN psychology. Keeping your head in the right place and always playing your best game or something close is the only way to profit.

So anyway, I said I'd talk a bit about some of the other bets I've made this month. This is an unusual month - I don't know if ones in the future will go this way or not, but I've placed a lot more bets in June than I have before.

The biggest one is on Betfair. This is a betting service where you bet against other punters - someone is putting the money up for the other side of the bet. Therefore, to win you have to know more about the bet than the others. You also have to know sufficiently more to beat the rake. I cannot say that about any sport, so I do not play the game.

However, they have a market on the World Series of Poker. I know a lot about poker - I've played it for a living in the past, and now I work for the biggest online poker site.. I know more than most punters. The bet that stood out for me was the market in the field sizes. In 1971, 6 people entered the $10,000 event. In 1981, 75. In 1991, 215. 2001 - 613. Then things REALLY took off. In 2006, 8773 people took part.

This information isn't exactly secret. Most people will be betting the trend. They will be expecting nine or ten thousand entrants, but I thought otherwise.

Since 2006, something has happened that made me want to lay these bets (i.e, be the sportsbook on this bet - letting people bet on 9,000+). Senator Frist managed to attach the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act to a port security bill on the last day of congress. The port bill had to pass, and many of the house were unaware the UIGEA was even attached. The aim of this act was to make getting money to and from online gaming sites illegal.

Fortunately for those of us who believe in civil liberties, the bill had several huge flaws. But, it meant that Party Poker's stock tanked - from in the hundreds to down to 30p/share. They went from being a five billion dollar company to being removed from the FTSE 100, as they decided they had to withdraw from the US market for legal reasons, losing 75% of their playerbase in one stroke. It made poker harder to play in the US, the home of the WSOP. Most of the big sites started turning their attention to Europe for their new players.

Therefore, I expect there to be many fewer entrants to the WSOP. The poker boom already showed signs of finishing in the US before the UIGEA, and now many people have stopped playing because they (wrongly) think it makes poker illegal. It also makes it a lot harder for them to play in the online satellites - last year, PokerStars sent 1600 of the 8900 players through its satellites.

Europeans just don't care about the WSOP as much as Americans. There'll still be satellites, but fewer people will be qualified this year compared to last.

More importantly, the sites that still deal with US players are not able to send wire transfers to Harrah's (the WSOP organisers). The big sites that deal with US players still - PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker - instead credited their players with the $10,000 buyin and told them to do with it as they please. Therefore, I predict that of the (smaller number of) people who qualify online, fewer will turn up - perhaps 1 in 4 or even less.

The market on Betfair was listing 9,000+ entrants at 2.98, when I thought it was really more like 6 or 7. I bought all the action, and then I bought some more at 3 and 3.1. In total, I have about Ł1500 on this bet. If I win, I get about Ł2250. If I lose, I lose Ł1500.

This is quite a lot of money, particularly for my first ever "sports" bet. I have no sports betting bankroll (whilst I have one specifically for poker), so this really is jumping in at the deep end. I feel no need to bet on anything else, and I picked this bet purely because the value was so good.

Of course, I am not assured of the money. I think the real odds are 5 or 6:1, and sometimes I will lose. The fact that early numbers from preliminary events are good (some up on last year, some about the same) makes me pretty nervous. However, these events do not have online qualifiers, and so the largest part of why I think this is a good bet has not yet come into play.

I consider that Ł1500 money now spent. I can afford to lose, though obviously it'll annoy me. I think it's a wise investment, and I think that if I see bets that good again, I will take them. However, I will not place bets without this kind of edge. I know a lot of people doubt this kind of statement, but I have successfully played more than a million hands of online poker, and I have never done any of the compulsive things that gamblers do: Play blackjack, play much higher than their bankroll dictates, or play under severely suboptimal conditions (e.g, drunk).

So, roll on the weekend... You will find me in the pub on Friday, whether to celebrate or drown my sorrows!

As of late, I have become something of a degenerate. I used to never bet on anything outside of poker, no matter what it was. Ok, so sometimes I did Ł5 bets with friends, but that was it. Recently, I am betting a LOT more...

My biggest bet of the month was for $1,000. It's a slightly strange bet because we both have the same one - if one of us fails to play 40,000 (poker) hands this month, we have to pay the other $1,000. Please note: I have a fulltime job.

I ran really really bad at the start of the month, so took a week off. By the 18th I had played 20500 hands.. And so made a similiar bet with another player that we could do 20,000 hands by the end of the month, this time for $200.

The $1,000 player messaged me on 2 + 2 yesterday saying that he had gone crosseyed from too much poker. He was on 30,000 hands and whilst he could play another 10,000 by the end of the month (he had 2 and a half days), he would hate to do so. He offered to buy himself out for $500. We both lose if he plays it out, so I took the money. I probably should have asked for $6-$700, but I didn't want to press my point...

The guy I had the $200 bet with was 3,000 hands short when he sent me a message this morning saying that he isn't going to make it as he has to move house. He didn't offer to buy himself out, and in that case I suppose I would have had to say no: He would have no chance of playing it out, so I lose if I let him get out. I am sure he knew that too.

Of course, I still have to play my 40,500 hands by the end of the month, and I still have 3075 to go... If I lose, it's going to cost me $500 rather than $1200, but I think that's still motivation enough to spend my Saturday eight tabling!

This isn't actually the biggest bet that I have going right now, perhaps I'll explain that one next time...

If I want to aquire HD DVD/Blu Ray movies and play them on my HD TV, what do I need in terms of PC? I have no idea how these things work.

It's kind of annoying to spend Ł250 or whatever it was on an HD DVD player when there're a load of films that are out as blu-ray only...

This replay is buggy for me, but it shows the first half of how to beat the Brutal balanced AI. As I am clearing my original start Tiberium field, when I replay this it doesn't have me selecting half my forces, so it all goes wrong from then on. If anyone gets it working all the way through, this is me beating the Brutal Balanced AI in 18 minutes 30 or so.

To load the replay watcher, use the -spectator switch, for example:

There don't appear to be fast forward, pause or rewind buttons though, but hopefully that'll be in the final version.... It's a bit boring watching me build a crane, moving my MCV and so on.

People will argue that the competitive Real Time Strategy game was born with Warcraft 2. The argument is similar to that which says FPS competitive gaming originated in BBS board Doom matches: A small number of people were able to play over often unreliable specialised services that nobody else knew much about.

Quake was the real birth of competitive FPS gaming – the Internet was just starting to hit critical mass, millions of people knew what the game was, matches could be found in a matter of seconds, and the game didn’t break. Similarly, the birth of competitive strategy games came for me with Red Alert. As the widely anticipated sequel to Command & Conquer, the magazines were full of nothing else, there was a free, dedicated server run by the developers that everyone had access to, and the game (mostly) actually worked. Thousands played.

Since then we’ve had a couple of insipid sequels, the developers were bought out, and the world discovered Starcraft. RTS games haven’t advanced since then – they’ve regressed to pointless 3d interfaces, gotten bogged down in the most boring parts of the game, and have just not been much fun.

As you can probably tell, I am thinking of Command & Conquer 3 when I write this column. Yes, the last few C&C games were a bit boring. Yes, the RTS games from EA LA haven’t exactly been brilliant. Yes, it’s ten years since the last great game. But I don’t care! C&C3 looks like it might actually have what it takes to work.

Firstly, the developers are talking about immediacy. When you click on a unit, it actually does something, it doesn’t pause for a bit, decide whether it likes you or not, and begin to trundle over. It just goes. And all of the units go – a priority of the design of the engine is that everything runs.

Just as exciting for the competitively inclined, C&C3 looks like it’ll probably be one of the few games that has us in mind. The services that we are used to – sites like ours, where you can download the latest demos, ranking services, commentating setups – these are built into the game. I don’t think that these details are final yet, but the idea is that all games played on the ladder are uploaded to the C&C3 service. Players with reputations for being good find their replays in more prominent positions. The most viewed replays stay for longer on the site, whilst ignored ones disappear. You can rate how good your opponent was after the game finishes (though I assume that’ll run on some kind of bias system depending on how well you’ve been rated yourself, which should help remove players with bad reputations). You can schedule games with opponents too, so that when you go to the site, you can look at past games and check the listings for upcoming games to watch live. You can also find which games are running right now, jump in, and watch those as they happen.

There will be a free, stand alone observer client which will let you watch games without actually needing to own a copy – what a great idea as a marketing tool, let alone the uses in a competitive environment. You can have a caster of the game, who can provide commentary, control the camera and draw on the screen to highlight parts of the match. The reputation points also apply to these commentators, so that you can tell who is worth watching in that regard too.

Then you have the standard ladders, matchmaking services and so on that we are used to with these games. What more could a competitive gamer want? It’d be trivial to create a tournament, and the system seems to fit perfectly with what the big organisers like the WCG are looking for in their competitions.

Starcraft purists deride Red Alert for being a one unit game. Whilst this is slightly unfair, the emphasis is on slightly. Games are decided in a dance of little red and blue tanks, with only the occasional Tesla coil, engineer, grenadier or rocket troop seeing the light of day.

If EA LA manage to create some semblance of balance in the game and give players a chance to win in more than just one way, the future of competitive RTS gaming is looking bright.

I just thought I'd mark the moment that I'd been online for ten years.

For my 17th birthday (actually, a bit before), I persuaded my parents that they should get me a modem and a phone line, on the grounds that I had money due to christmas just passing, and that I had two paper rounds.

I then proceeded to run up Ł100 monthly phone bills for the next 3 years courtesy of Red Alert, Quakeworld and Starcraft. Hurrah!

Actually, a better heading would be "Poker Boast".

PartyPoker have a VIP club whose main/only benefit is that every couple of months they run a bonus that's dependent on how many PartyPoints you earn. They started one on the 27th of April, and I've just finished it, for almost +10% profits.

I have done something sociable twice since the 27th (once to play in a home game...), and have otherwise spent spare time on cards. I'm also likely to play again on the 10th when the promotion ends, as you get +10% for every 10% you exceed the bonus. Even better, tomorrow I am going to a media tournament courtesy of PokerStars, which involves members of the media, guests, and the last three WSOP champions playing in Sit & Go freerolls. And by no means least, a free bar.

In essence, it's been all poker for me the last two weeks. And I'm not even burnt out. This is quite probably because I'm winning quite a lot, and at a form of the game I'm new to - 6 max. I'm actually winning more per hour than I did when I played for a living, though that choice of career was not my proudest moment.

Oh yeh, and after mentioning that I was reading (the pretty interesting) "The Poker Face of Wallstreet", the author Aaron Brown mailed to say thanks for the mention, which was somewhat surprising. I was drunken at the time, so I doubt any other poker authors are going to be emailing me any time soon, especially if I tell Chris Moneymaker what I thought of his book when I meet him tomorrow...

“The Fantom” is fermenting war between the nations with his advanced weaponry and devious cunning – we need you and a selection of fellows to confront this madman, halt his nefarious plan and save the world! This band will be called… The League of Extraordinary Gentlewomen!

Actually, we just want to run an online girl's Counter-Strike tournament, and aNouC liked the name. So calling all European girl's CS teams! We are creating a ‘for fun’ online tournament to be run over the next couple of months, as a more competitive way to practice for the ESWC.

Firstly this competition is for girl’s teams only! We intend this to be an online warm-up event before the ESWC, so that teams can see where they are against many that they may not have had the chance to play against before.

We would like sixteen European teams to compete in this tournament, which will run on Saturday and Sunday afternoons every weekend from April 17th and 18th, until the finals on May 15th and 16th. The teams will be split into two groups of eight, who will play in a round-robin format, with the top two from each going to the semi finals. These two groupings will be split according to geographical location where possible, so as to ensure the pings are as fair as can be.

Each team will play twice per weekend, so we will need quite a few admins to help out – both in IRC and in the games. We are therefore asking for experienced volunteers to lend a hand, perhaps for a game a weekend, or more if they wish. Volunteers coming from teams already entered in the competition will be allowed, but will only help out in games from the other group.

The full rules, schedule and map lists will be available once we have a good idea of how many teams will be registering.
