After being a stealth addition to the previous FoM LAN, Quake Live will be represented in full force starting 11/09 through to 13/09 .
Frag-o-matic is one, if not the last remaining large LAN in Belgium, hosting up to one thousand seats and hosting two annual events. In recent years the presence of MOBAs and ‘the other shooter’ has seen the decline of any Arena FPS presence. A long time ago Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament could have been deemed the lifeblood of the LAN scene, but as participants grew older and sponsorship became an ever pressing affair we found ourselves in a Quakeless reality.
It is for that reason that I started my lobbying, infiltrating the unsuspecting crew as a lowly Starcraft 2 caster and slowly spreading my Arena FPS rhetoric. Quake Live was back on the list, and to my shock almost nobody had ever played it. We
persisted, and with a small pool of players we had ourselves a tournament. It was truly a sight to behold.
The experiment was deemed a success (good enough for Kotaku to spoof the article *cough*) and so the time has come to expand the competition and take all of this seriously.
Part of being serious means there will also be a substantial prize pool which is currently at € 1,000 and likely to rise, some parts cash and some parts hardware, perhaps this will make it worthy of some attention?
Beyond regular duel we’ll look into getting some TDM and perhaps CA going – depending on the interest. Some side events and ‘funcompos’ will certainly be looked into as well – we can set up whatever we want.
The event will hopefully be streamed to some extent, and will be commentated on to the best of the local caster’s ability, whose expertise will slowly fade with the rise of the level of play. Details on the coverage are certainly to follow.
Caution however! To anyone lingering about in close enough proximity to FoM’s location at the Oktoberhallen or anyone wanting to chance the trip to bust some newbs (and get caught by better players doing the same thing – by all means) the seats are filling up fast – only 300 remaining at the time of writing. So hurry and register! if you want to be an active participant in the Arena Scene Renaissance!
FoM is of course not the only event out there. But the idea is to expose a large number of active competitive gamers to what came before and explain the idea that games don’t have to get old. That the standards set a decade ago can still thrive. That right now, is the most effective marketing we can think of. A very simple first step indeed.
