El Risitas meme featuring SyncError and Sponge: Where is it? (3 comments)
Posted by Brainie @ 01:10 CDT, 11 July 2024 - iMsg
I'm desperately trying to find a video where somebody put subtitles on the El Risitas interview to describe a meeting between SyncError and Sponge when they launched a new version of Quake Live.

It was one of the best and top posts on this website back in the days. Does anyone know if it still exists somewhere?

edit: omg i found it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJWBm6rJE6Q

Frozen Sand releases Urban Terror 4.3 (No comments)
Posted by Brainie @ 09:26 CDT, 2 October 2016 - iMsg
Frozen Sand released this September 30th their last version of Urban Terror using the Quake 3 engine.

The latest update of the original Quake 3 mod, called UrbanTerror: "Still Dying", in reference to the radical down peak of its player base following the releases of their 4.2 versions, features today a very long changelog including new weapons, remodeled maps, new gametypes, and an improved HUD.

Download Link

This new update features the addition of new game modes such as Gun Game (as seen on Counter-Strike) and InstaGib using a newly added weapon, the TOD50. They have updated the percentages of damages dealt with a few weapons on the characters' groin and butt. A few maps have been improved, fixed, or remodeled such as ut4_kingdom, ut4_paris, which became officially endorsed by the game, and ut4_mykonos. Last but not least, the Updater, the software with which you can download the game, finally supports Mac OSX (even though the game has always been playable on Mac computers).

Urban Terror first started off as a mod for the game Quake 3 released in 1998. The mod was among the firsts of its kind - along with Action Quake II and Unreal Tournament - to feature realistic as well as militaristic environments within Quake 3's physics and realm of possibilities. Since the beginning of its development, the game has been known to the Quake communities for its essential features such as floor sliding, wall jumping and stamina as well as its CS-like look, all of which provide the players with a unique experience distinguishable from all other Quake-based games. Finally, this new update of the game, the last one using the ioQuake3 engine, is a fresh breath to its community as it provides a stable game that lives up to its initial charms and characteristics, and leaves behind the years of the controversial UrT 4.2 versions.

According to reliable sources (n.b: myself reading their article on their official website), the development team is already working on the next Urban Terror game which will be using the Unreal Engine this time. New improved graphics and availability on Steam are to be expected as well.

Thanks to the development team, especially Barbatos, Raider, BladeKiller, and FrankieV, among with all the other contributors, who managed to make this game one of the oldest Quake 3 mods still alive and enjoyable.

Is this build ok? (50 comments)
Posted by Brainie @ 07:21 CDT, 25 September 2015 - iMsg
I don't have a huge budget (about 600$ without the monitor included). I'm poor. Such is life. Gimme monnies.

Anyway I found this build: http://www.dantech.ca/?q=14--77

Could you tell me if it's good enough for video games? I'm not a huge gamer. Basically I would play QuakeLive, UrbanTerror and CounterStrike on it, and Reflex maybe (I don't know if they optimized it since then).

I also do text publishing so I'll be using Office, LaTeX and Scribus. Those don't take much CPU. I do a bit of web development but not much.

So yeah I don't really know what to expect from this computer, I just want something that's not too powerful (because of my budget and because I'm not a l33t 24/7 gamer) but enough to run the games I like. I don't know the specs of these games.

Any advice? Thanks.

EDIT: Some of you might laugh at me because Quake is supposed to run on a potato PC. Well believe me or not I have a potato PC that doesn't even sync videos on youtube with sound in fullscreen and Quake couldn't run on it. I just want to be careful with where my money goes. I don't want to buy a new one in two / three years.

Last time I played was in January. I had to stop because my computer crashed down (fucking dell laptop, anyone buying one should watch out because they are scams) and I changed for a cheaper one that my school gave me. This laptop is so bad I can't run quakelive on it :/ . So no decent computer that can run it, no headphones anymore, my mouse becomes outdated...

I MISS QUAKE LIVE ;__;

It pisses me off. I want to play it so much now... I miss ztn, I miss getting raped by ZorakWar, I miss campgrounds, CA, CTF, all that stuff...

STFU ABOUT MY LAGS (119 comments)
Posted by Brainie @ 16:31 CST, 12 December 2014 - iMsg
Seriously, I'm sick of being kicked because apparently I'm warping or lagging.

IT'S FUCKING ALRIGHT ON MY SCREEN. Yes, sometimes it's not as good as it should be, but on my side my screen is smooth and the game flows fucking well.

For fucks sake I'm tired of these fat kids who expect their games to be full of luxury: they kick someone when it's 5v4 or so or they kick you because they missed their shot on you because apprently you "warped". Bitch, it's not as if I was literally teleporting and having 999s every two seconds.

How can I fix that? I don't give a fuck about how people see me playing as long as my game quality is good at home. I've been playing 7 years on a game with pure lags and a shitty computers and now that I'm playing QuakeLive with no lags on my side I'm not going to give a fucking care about what people complain about and I'm not going back into the abbyss of the CFG CVARS world.

THE ART OF QUAKE (5 comments)
Posted by Brainie @ 10:26 CST, 15 November 2014 - iMsg
Was a text written by suntzu in the VI century B.C (Before Cooller). It explains the principles of Quakeness and how to win a war. Let me show you some of its principles.

1. “Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak.”

2. “The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy by IRC without fighting.”

3. “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

4. “Supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's stack without fighting.”

5. “Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a Cypher.”

6. “Victorious duelers win first and then go to war, while defeated duelers go to war first and then seek to win”

7. “All dueling is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem lagging; when using our forces, we must appear AFK; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are camping far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are tracking him.”

8. “The art of dueling is of vital importance to the dueler. It is a matter of life and respawn, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected.”

9. “There is no instance of a dueler benefitting from prolonged duel.”

10. “In the midst of rapha, there is also opportunity”

11. “Treat your items as you would your own beloved sons. And they will respawn for you into the deepest valley.”

12. “who wishes to fight must first count the item”

13. “The wise warrior avoids the preshoots.”

14. “Great results, can be achieved with small plasma cells.”

15. “mystify, mislead, and surprise the evil”

That is it for now. May your wisdom guide you into the glorious camp grounds.

Amen.

Duel problems (88 comments)
Posted by Brainie @ 22:09 CDT, 4 October 2014 - iMsg
I don't get it. I can easily beat noobs 20 to -4 on Areowalk or Bloodrun. And what I mean by noobs is not the guy who just came in and doesn't know what to do. I can easily beat someone who's not new but who hardly gets control over the items (probably because I get the control of the items before him).

I don't pretend to be a pro but I know the basics for sure (items, counting, etc). My aim average is about 20-21 % which I know could be better...

BUT, when it comes to duelling someone better than the ones I beat it's a total chaos. I don't understand how and why. More importantly, I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I very often get a good start. I have this reflex that as soon as the game starts I get to the closest item (RA or MH). I usually manage to have a very good stack.

But then I somehow always lose my first fight with the opponent. This is due to some shitty rockets that splash to me or what else...

Can anyone help me? I'll try to upload a demo of a game on which I get destroyed. Is there anyone who would like to add me and give me some tips this week-end? I live in Canada but I don't mind the ping. My nickname on QL is BRRRAAAAIIINNie .

The Extra Life Marathon on October 25th (7 comments)
Posted by Brainie @ 18:28 CDT, 26 August 2014 - iMsg
Some of you might have done an activity through fund-raising. Simply look out for sponsors such as parents, family, friends, and make a marathon such as biking, running, or anything else for a good cause, a cause that you think is good.

... What if you could fight for a good cause from your computer ? Funded in 2008, Extra Life Marathon is a gaming marathon that aims to collect money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals located in USA as well as in Canada. These children suffer from various diseases from cancer to injuries from accidents.

The idea is simple: you find sponsors (parents, family, friends, and so on) who are ready to pay you to play video games for 24 hours and you give back the money to Extra Life who will distribute it to the hospital of your choice (that belongs to CMN). This gaming marathon is starting on October 25th at 8:00 am . Of course you do not need to play 24 hours in a row. You can make a team and make some blocked hours, take breaks, and so on. In other words, you have to play a total of 24 hours to complete this marathon.

So, are you ready to play some Quake, Counter Strike or anything else for a good cause? ;)

I want to play some good CTF (32 comments)
Posted by Brainie @ 16:02 CDT, 17 August 2014 - iMsg
Ohai,

I'm tired of servers with shitty admins, people who are just items grabbers and don't play with their team or simple noob starters.

So that's why I'm going to spawn a CTF server on the east coast from 6 pm (available on week-ends during school time). It's CTF with decent maps, 5vs5. The goal is to gather people in a match who want to play as a team and seriously well. It's like a serious pick-up game. And if people are interested maybe I'll set up a pick-up on IRC and provide a teamspeak for it.

I also made a team for that: AESIR. It gathers people who want to play this game type with smartness as well as for fun! We will do our best to play private clan wars as well as leagues if any of them happen.

Do you want to be part of it? Great, just add me on QL ( BRRRAAAAIIINNie ) and I'll send you an invite :) .

Location: North America (but Europeans are welcome as long as they hit :D )
Tag: aesir. Nickname
TeamSpeak server: Private.
IRC: #aesir.ql

Name of the CTF server: TRUE CTF

Cheers!

Video Games Want You To Cheat (129 comments)
Posted by Brainie @ 11:20 CDT, 17 June 2014 - iMsg
This article aims to describe from a sociological point of view the phenomenon of cheating. It does not attempt to release any kind of debate about cheaters and cheating.

Reminder from the author: I am not a psychologist nor a sociologist. I just enjoy to read and think about video game psychology. The resources I use are retrieved from my university course notes. Keep in mind I am an amateur although I use true concepts and existing ideas from the sociological and psychological field.

Woah, this guy is good! Damn he beat me again... I wish I could know how he did that! How did he know I was there? If only I could see what's going on in his mind I could probably be better... Maybe I could just go watch him play against someone else or ask for his demo? But that won't change the way I'm doing right now...

Like a complex puzzle or an impossible maths problem, we always wonder what is the answer. We ask for clues, we want to know what is happening on the other side of our screen. What is the only and simplest way to know in real time what the opponent is doing in order to become better than him? What if... we could see through walls? Oh but that's not fair right? But if it's not fair, why are there cheats? Why does our game have cheats if we cannot use them?

Video game conditioning (13 comments)
Posted by Brainie @ 19:25 CDT, 11 June 2014 - iMsg
The attempt of this article is to suggest an hypothesis to describe the influence of a video game such as Quake on the player's play style in other video games.

Please note that I do not have straight answers and I do not pretend to have the absolute truth in this topic. I am just passionate about video game psychology and psychology itself. However, the concepts and my experience in psychology are based on the courses I have followed as a university student. Therefore this content has to be considered as a suggestion or a hypothesis based on true concepts in psychology.

NBR: I will often use the term "Quake" as a reference to any type of Quake game so this will include Quake Live, Quake 3, and so on, as I consider these games to be very close and similar in terms of philosophy and environment.

Let me introduce you to Urban Terror... (45 comments)
Posted by Brainie @ 20:46 CST, 11 December 2013 - iMsg
Hello everyone,

First of all, I just want to precise I am not willing to make any sort of advertising for this game. I'm simply a regular player and I'm not part of the development staff. I just want to present you this game and to ask your thoughts about its actual situation because sometimes an outside eye would be better than one from the community itself.

Urban Terror used to be a mod of Quake3 but nowadays it's a standalone game. It's based on the IdTech engine.
Urban Terror's concept is very simple: it is a free personal shooter involving the player into a real life background. It is a great mix of Quake's speed, physics and ambiance, with the inspiration of Counter Strike's graphics and mental game play.

You can play many game types: Bomb&Defuse (equivalent of the bomb mode of CS), Team Deathmatch, Team Survivor (equivalent of Quake's Clan Arena), Capture the Flag, and some other game types less known and less played but as much fun and interesting if not more.
Just like in Quake, UrT (short way to write it) has its own mod to work on the movement skills which is called Jump Mode (equivalent of DeFraG). In Urban, you can strafe, slide on the floor and jump on the walls.

Just to sum up quickly the history of the game, we have been playing on the 4.1 version for around 10 years. Then one year ago the game developers released the 4.2 version. Next version is going to be called Urban Terror HD but that's a very vague project they keep in boxes.

If I'm here introducing you to this game you might already know, it is because I want you to give a try to this new 4.2 version. Many bugs, many glitches and many horrible things happened during the first year of this version. However, it is stable and playable now. The actual version shows up very well the potential of the game. Among the numerous features:
- Anti Cheat. Frozen Sand (the name of the people who make it) releases a ban list from time to time.
- New weapons. Some people think it's still a work in progress, some don't think so, let the good people (you) judge.
- More characters and skins. Males and females as well, all sorts of colours, in other words you don't get bored with the simple Red / Blue skins anymore.
- More maps. Urban Terror has actually a mapping community. You can play on a lot of maps (only a few are used in competitions though), a jumping community and also an anticheat community. Quake maps are playable as well.
- Sound, mouse and graphic improvements.

I would like to also put the emphasis on these beneficial points of this game:
- There is an active group of people making it. Not only there are people developing this game, but there is also people around it: shoutcasters, fragmovie makers, leagues, and so on.
- We are a small community. Almost everyone know each other.
- We have people from all over the world. French community, German, Polish, American, Canadian, Asian, and Australian. They even have their national teams (UrT was part of the Nations Cup of ClanBase).

As for me, I find this game fantastic because of its concept. As I've said, it's a mix of Quake and Counterstrike (unreal movements made on realistic maps).

Because a picture is worth a thousand words, let me give you some links to see what it consists of:
- One fragmovie among the myriads from the French player HeMP. He is in the top 5 (if not the best) best players. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxReroHb4NY

- Grand Final Nations Cup France vs Germany (4.1 version though but it's just to show you that it has a good coverage): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhKcz4UfFP0

- http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x16w6ei (good fragmovie maker)

-----
If I'm here in front of you with this thread, it is also to get your advice on the statement of this game. Most of you should probably be aware that ClanBase.ggl.com suddenly disappeared from day to night (because of financial problems they said).
The problem with Urban Terror is that it's very small. By that, I mean that almost everyone know each other, there are more servers than players (you cannot find a good public server or a good private clan war around 20:00 if you live in North America), we only have 2 to 3 leagues (we had ClanBase and a North American league but the first one shut down and the second one died but will come back next year according to the admins). A lot of people quit when 4.2 went out. According to some statistics (http://www.urtstats.net/players.php?duration=3months), we only turn around 600 - 700 people playing (for more than 90000 accounts created on the website).

The thing is, a lot of people play competitions and a lot of us wish that we could bring this game on the eSport scene. Some teams started to have sponsors and we had our first participation to the EuroCup of ClanBase (with cash prize included). Unfortunately ClanBase is down and everything got cancelled. Some people are looking for a try-out with ESL.

So the advice I'm asking you is, how would you manage to promote a game like Urban Terror (which is very old btw, 14+ years old) for everyone and to the eSport environment?

Although it's a fabulous game, there is always the same players, same level, same way of thinking, and so on. How can we improve this?

So yeah, I come up here to ask you to give it a second try because now this game got a real good face and feel free to give your advice on its actual situation. There are tons of debates on the official forums about the statement of the game. The game developers think it's going fine, league admins think it's black or white, and so on. But what do the real people who tried it think about Urban Terror? That's my question.

Thanks for reading and I'm glad I discovered ESR because it provides good content.

Cheers and I wish you the best for 2014,

Brainie

If some of you want, you can try this game with me and it would be a pleasure for me to have a talk with you on teamspeak 3. There's also the official IRC channel on Quakenet on which there will always be people to help you if you have issues: #urbanterror .
