This post is in response to many of the questions I have been getting since deciding to step away from the
North American Duel Cup. If you have no clue what I'm talking about you can catch up on the latest DraNA (lol thanks twitch chat)
here and
here
I am not abandoning everything, but I have a bunch of bitter sweet emotions and feelings towards the organization and events currently. Combine the previously mentioned feeling about Quake with high stress life situations and you've got a wonderful recipe for disaster. I have no desire or intention to share the details of these "life situations" but I will say that I don't want to ruin the joy that quake brings me by self destructing and taking the NA Duel Cup down with me. So let's skip to the the more important (quake related) details. This community of ours is a bunch of noobs, drama queens, dreamers, hipsters, snobs, friends, try-hards, etc. etc. etc. This is the current state of the Quake community and this community still exists because of how passionate the members of this community are about their Quake.
"So Quake players are passionate. What the **** is your point failr?"
This passion is why I am also having a difficult time letting go. Part of me wants to say "screw it" and stream this upcoming Sunday like normal. Fortunately there is a far louder and more rational voice in my head telling me to "back off" and chill out. I think a good stream is about providing good entertainment. For me it doesn't matter if that entertainment comes from eye opening expert casting or if that entertainment comes from dank memes and fresh satire. The level of entertainment that I have been providing is not up to my personal standards, however I'm not concerned about damaging my ego in this situation. I have a terrible feeling that if I continue trying to force myself to manage all of this alone that I'll end up destroying myself mentally and taking the North American Duel Cup with me. The longer I try to accomplish my goals alone the heavier the bar gets and the farther away I fall from it. This was definitely a cry for help that was unfortunately delivered poorly and in combination with some serious life stress. Hopefully this helps those who are confused at this sudden announcement to understand why I have decided to do this. I actually think that this will help to strengthen and grow the NADC as a static organization within this bitter sweet community of ours.
I have no exact date or time frames, but I do hope to come back again someday soon
Thank You For Quakeing

If you hate Flash (and you should) but you like Twitch (and you should) you're probably wondering when html5 will be implemented. Some people have resorted to using applications such as livestreamer + VLC, but there are other people out there who can't be bothered downloading these applications and as a result don't watch live streams. I found a nice trick that lets you use the upcoming html5 player in your browser without downloading anything. Simply replace CHANNELNAME with the channel you want to watch.
beta html5 player url:
http://player.twitch.tv/?channel=CHANNELNAME&html5
[/q]It is important to note that this is still in beta, will not work with VODs, and chat does not load in the sidebar. Chat not supported. If you enjoy spamming dank memes and copy pastas on twitch you will need to load chat in a different tab/window (i.e.
http://www.twitch.tv/CHANNELNAME/chat?popout= ) or use an IRC client. The source link below also contains information on how to get chat working with the beta html5 player, but a lot of people report errors so I have not bothered trying it yet.

Are you getting the most out of your COX? My internet provider (COX Communications) actually used to use that as their slogan some years back. With a slogan like that it's no wonder that their service loves to troll it's customers. I am soooo salty right now about the state my COX has degraded to. COX has never been known for being the best out there, but since my only other option is very unstable DSL I'm stuck with them.
I thought COX were for sucking, but my COX sucks.

Reflex player and tournament host
tehace recently announced that his European Duel Cup #2 event finally has a new date! Due to a scheduling conflict with the recent North American BOXR Reflex duel cup this event had to be postponed temporarily, but the wait is over! Reflex fans and players will want to clear their Saturday schedule. The event will take place
10:00 CDT, 3 October 2015 . Several players have already registered, so make sure you
sign-up and support the event!
This will be a double elimination tournament. The Upper bracket starts off with a best of one in the first round, and then switches to a best of three format. The lower bracket games will be played out using a best of one format except the Lower Bracket Final which is a best of three. Upper bracket final and grand final are best of five.
Map selection begins with a coin toss and will use a pick pick format. The best of five matches use a "loser picks" format. Basically after each map the player who lost will choose the next arena.

Double Elimination Drop-Drop
Upper-Bracket matches are Best of One until Semi finals. Remaining matches are played as a Best of Three.
Lower-Bracket matches are all Best of One until the lower-bracket finals. LB Finals is a Best of Three.
• The opening Upper-Bracket games are Best of ONE matches. This changes when the tournament progresses into the Semi-Finals and beyond. The Semi-Finals is a Best of Three
• Games from the Lower-Brpacket games are all Best of ONE until the very end. The Lower-Bracket Finals is a Best of Three (this is done because the game determines who gets 3rd place and who moves on to the grand finals.
• The Grand Finals are unique. The lower bracket finalist must win two best of three sets to take first place. The upper bracket finalist is assumed to have proven themselves by not dropping a set throughout the tournament and so they must only win one best of three set to take first place.
• In a "Drop-Drop" tournament the map in a Best of One is decided by the players dropping maps until 1 map remains and is played. In a Best of Three players will drop maps until three remain. Players will each pick one of the three maps and the map remaining will serve as a tie breaker.
BO1: drop, drop, drop, drop, drop, drop > Last Map is Played

This Sunday at 16:00 CST you're invited to the 10th North American Duel Cup! The NA.DuelCup will remain a seven map event and I have decided to permanently change the map selection process to Drop-Drop. For single day cups like this Drop-Drop makes more sense to me, but public feedback is always welcome. This month our June 21st map pool will be composed of aerowalk and hektik in addition to the QuakeCon 2015 duel maps. Sign ups are open now, but you must still check in on the same day as usual, and please make sure you are signed up before 15:50 CST to avoid being locked out of the brackets!

There have been a lot of familiar faces popping up in North America. With all the QuakeCon hype filling the air it was bound happen! However we've still got a few months before the big LAN so there is still time to squeeze in a North American Duel Cup or two. On Sunday April 19th at 16:00 CST it doesn't matter if you're a familiar face, an unknown, or an infamous rival or the former. You are all invited to the eighth installment of the NA DuelCup.
In the interest of time there will be a slight change to our format. The lower bracket will continue to be Best-of-One matches. The lower bracket finals (last game of the lower bracket) will be a Best-of-Three. The big change comes in the upper bracket. The first two rounds of the event will be Best-of-One. It is not until the
third round that Best-of-Three is to be used. Good Luck and thank you for Quaking.
64 Player Double Elimination. Map selection for Best of Three is pick/pick and best of one is (obviously) drop/drop.
IMPORTANT FORMAT CHANGE FROM LAST MONTH
In the interest of time there will be a slight change to our format.
The lower bracket will continue to be Best-of-One matches.
The lower bracket finals (last game of the lower bracket) will be a Best-of-Three.
The big change comes in the upper bracket. The first two rounds of the event will be Best-of-One.
The third round that Best-of-Three is to be used.
Common topics Relating to rules and guidelines are below and full details are here.
1.) Occasionally someone will ask "I don't have 3 days and 300 duels played! Can I still play?" and the answer is: "probably, but you should get in touch with me first". This rule exists to deter aliasing so the tournaments can be seeded properly.
2.) In a "Pick-Pick" tournament the players each pick a map from the pool, and then drop maps until one remains. The map that remains will server as a tie breaker. Best of One sets still decide maps by dropping until there is a single map left to play.
3.) Type "cv cointoss" following by "heads" or "tails" into the console to see who picks/drops first. The winner of the coin toss may pass the first map drop/pick to their opponent or take it for themselves.
4.) Upper Bracket games are Best of Three sets: DROP, drop, drop, drop, pick, pick, decider
5.) Lower Bracket games are Best of One sets: DROP, drop, drop drop, drop drop, last is played
6.) Grand Finals is a Best of Seven with a one map advantage for the upper bracket finalist (this means first to four wins with the upper bracket player starting 1:0 in map score). First map pick us decided by a coin-toss, and the player who wins the coin-toss can pass the choice to their opponent. No further action is required until the first map is played as a "loser picks" format means subsequent maps are always chosen by the player coming off of the loss.
6.) Duel servers (unlike classic TDM and CTF) require no modification to the server settings and can simple be made. can be copied from below to make a server with password: duel
IMPORTANT: The only values you can modify are the maps, server name, server password, and server location. There is no point ro make premium servers as it only forces some players to need invites for a server they were going to join anyway. If you simply use a password and provide the information in #duelcup irc on quakenet no one will bother you except the streamer. On that note please remember to always provide an admin a link to your game and the password BEFORE you ready up. Server information can be put into the #duelcup chat or given to admin or streamer using the "/msg" command in IRC. Anything sent to flair in IRC is safe from the stream. note: Anything sent to flair in game is subject to show up on stream so please use IRC!

We had to turn away some good players last month, and I hope the same is not true this month. Please realize this 10 minute window allows administration to create brackets and get everything rolling with minimal delay. Aside from having to turn away some players it worked beautifully last time and we will continue to use this "buffer". Since the brackets are opened no more than 12 hours early I understand some players may be unable to get to their computers and sign up in time, and that some of you are often walking in the door as the event starts. If you are unable to sign up during the standard time frame but know that you will be ready to play when the "official" event time rolls around you can request to be manually added. Manual additions are approved on a case by case basis and may never be requested for a period of a more than 24 hours ahead of schedule. Also please keep in mind the rules regarding forfeits as well.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the #tdmpickup draft series
broadcast and subsequent
videos so much. 100 youtube subscribers seems like small potat in the grand scheme of things. You have to realize that life has changed a **** load in the last month for me, and the fact that people are enjoying the "new" approach I have towards casting is extremely welcoming. Thank you to Lam for being the first event organizer who asked me to cover an event. It means a lot! even if I was your second pick! :)~
I know that some people never give things a second chance, but to those who have I am happy you liked what you saw

The Duel Cup brings you the first of two duel cups this March and sign ups are open for the first of these! Important announcement post cup as well just to address the future cups.
64 Player Double Elimination. Map selection for Best of Three (upper bracket) is pick/pick and best of one (lower bracket) is obviously drop/drop. Common topics Relating to rules and guidelines are below and full details are here.
1.) Occasionally someone will ask "I don't have 3 days and 300 duels played! Can I still play?" and the answer is: "get in touch with admins". This rule exists to deter aliasing so the tournaments can be seeded properly.

4.) Upper Bracket games are Best of Three sets: PICK PICK, drop drop, drop drop, tie-breaker
5.) Lower Bracket games are Best of One sets: drop drop, drop drop, drop drop, play last
6.) Grand Finals is a Best of Five/Seven (please read for further clarification)
The upper bracket finalist is assumed to have proven themselves by not dropping a set throughout the tournament, and therefore if they take 3 map wins before their opponent they win the grand finals. However if the player from the lower bracket takes 3 map wins first then the best of five becomes a best of seven. Map selection remains the same starting with a coin-toss. Player who wins the coin-toss may pick the first map or pass the choice to their opponent. Subsequent picks are then chosen the loser of the most recent map.
6.) Server settings can be copied from below to make a Texas server with password: duel
No additional modifications are allowed. The only values you may change are the maps, server name, server password, and server location. Do not make premium servers. There is no point and it only causes issues with players needing invites. If you simply use a password and provide the information in #duelcup irc on quakenet I assure you no one will bother you. Due to the fact we did not get the funds that we were told would be provided there will not be a prize for this cup (unless someone wants to give $200 bucks tonight on stream hehe). DarwinsGate will be putting their donation towards the "regularly scheduled" Duel Cup on March 21st. Thank you Darwin =)
Important: Until we setup stripe for CC donations (very soon just waiting on bank to approve) donations can be made with paypal on the new account we have created. I say all this because last month paypal kind of screwed up and the player's money has sat frozen. After a week with little help from customer support. I have requested the account be closed and a check mailed out. Details of the whole fiasco can be read in this thread. I have been told the check will come in 7 to 21 days. This was sent to me on March Third. Fingers cross you guys :( I feel like **** for this but I don't know what else to do.

Channel DuelCup is Changing on Twitch to twitch.tv/flairtv
When I started the N.A. Duelcup I took up streaming to ensure that the games would always be covered. I did not realize just how much I would enjoy casting/streaming events and even my own games. Because the channel is expanding to cover more than just the NA DuelCup and I can see myself doing this for quite a while I am re-branding the channel. The new channel
FlairTV will hopefully allow me to expand to other game modes with a higher success rate. Additionally there are many games coming out soon. While I do not see the QuakeLive community moving else where anytime soon the new channel name
FlairTV is not game specific so potential viewers will be easier to obtain (in theory).
The
#duelcup irc and
duelcup.com will remain. They are for the tournament anyway, not the stream.
For now
http://youtube.com/duelcup will continue to be used, but this may change in the future as well. I am much less concerned about this since most people who watch the VODs are twitch followers who missed the live broadcast and would like to watch in 60 fps.
If you are currently following
http://twitch.tv/duelcup and are enjoying the content please continue to do so on
http://twitch.tv/flairtv !! This is not going to be the funnest move in the world since I am sure to lose some of you, but I strongly feel this will help the channel grow long term. What I will be doing is going live on DuelCup using my second computer, and then going into /host mode so that anyone viewing DuelCup will see
FlairTV. This will continue for a month, and hopefully the "damage" will be minimal.
Thanks for Quaking
~Flair

Details for the sixth North American DuelCup have been confirmed. There are a few changes suggested by pla
yers that we will be adopting since this cup is for the community after all! Current and future events will be played Saturdays at 19:00 CST. This change is for pla
yers in the Pacific time zone who have expressed concern about the cups being too early. Additionally the Grand Finals has been reverted to its original format to reward the upper bracket finalist. Thank you for the suggestions and Thank you for Quaking!
Watch the Results in 60fps on Youtube
The format for February remains largely the same except for a few tweaks including a change to the grand finals, max 64 players cap (cause why not?) and the sign ups closing 15 minutes before the start. Map selection will remain pick/pick with Best of Three upper and best of one lower. We have been doing pick/pick since December and the games have been much better! I know some of you don't like it. Tough. The full rules & guidelines can be read at DuelCup.com but here is a quick summary containing some of the most common topics that I am asked.
1.) Occasionally someone will ask "I don't have 3 days and 300 duels played! Can I still play?" and the answer is: "get in touch with admins". This rule exists to deter aliasing so the tournaments can be seeded properly.
6.) Server settings can be copied from below (makes a Texas server).
No additional modifications are allowed. The only values you may change are the maps, server name, server password, and server location. Do not make premium servers. There is no point and it only causes issues with players needing invites. If you simply use a password and provide the information in #duelcup irc on quakenet I assure you no one will bother you. Always provide an admin a link to your game and the password BEFORE you ready up. We can avoid having to ask you mid game accidentally. Admin names on irc flair, SG|shun, SG|Rob. Alternatively you can put the info into the #duelcup chat. Anything sent to flair in IRC is safe from the stream. Anything sent to flair in game is subject to show up on stream!

This morning in IRC I was being random and i was using haiku poems to answer and comment. Why? I don't know ... moving on! At some point the poems began to take on a Quake theme, and this little gem was discovered.
All times aggressive
You must choose situations
I am talking it
Before I am called out on it I admit that the original quote used for the middle line should contain "have to" instead of "must"... and if you have a problem with it all I have to say is:
You cannot resist
Determined to reply first
Unproductive troll
Thank you for making my day cooller =)
(For those who may not know a haiku is a Japanese poem consisting of three lines. The first and last lines have five syllables and the middle has seven)

I am actively looking for people who want to cast the North American Duel Cups. I have been fortunate enough to have players like Rey & Davis help out when they can. Unfortunately they are regular players in the duelcup.com events so they are not always going to be available, and I need some help. I don't care if you're a 3000 elo dueler or if you have never casted before. That said you should meet the following criteria...
#1) You WANT to cast quake! This sounds redundant but I cannot stress this one enough. You should be excited to do this! If you're offering to cast simply to help then I urge you to reconsider before continuing. Please have a strong desire to cast quake! Thank you.
#2) You can read, write, and speak English fluently and are not afraid to do so for an audience. This may be the North American Duel Cup but I don't care where you or your accent are from.
#3) Have a decent microphone. No distortion or feedback. I don't care if its a $10 P.O.S. if you come through clearly.
#4) Be passionate! Similar to the first requirement but more of a personality thing. You don't need to be smiles and rainbows 24/7 or anything crazy, but no one wants to hear someone who obviously doesn't care about what they are doing.
Interested? Let me know!

The first
N.A. Duel Cup of 2015 is here! The first four events were well received, and community support has been awesome. The internet has come a long way but due to ping restrictions most players from North America still cannot compete in the main QuakeLive events such as the 125 FPS League. The N.A. DuelCup fills a small yet vital role in providing players from this region a stage to compete on. If you missed any of the events or would like to relive them the VODs are available.
The N.A. DuelCup welcomes
donations towards current or future prize pools. Please specify if you would like to remain anonymous. Total donations in 2014: $216.00 USD. Thank you everyone!
32 Player double elimination bracket.
i. Upper Bracket games are Best of Three (Bo3)
ii. Lower Bracket games are Best of One (Bo1)
iii. Type "cv cointoss" following by "heads" or "tails" into the console to see who picks/drops first. The winner of the coin toss may pass the first map drop/pick to their opponent or take it for themselves.
iv. In a "Drop-Drop" tournament the players drop maps until there are 1, 3, or 5 maps left depending on the kind of match (best of 1, 3, and 5) they are playing. Best of one drops until 1 map left, best of three until 3 maps left, and so on. If playing anything except a best of One players now pick maps until one map remains as the tie breaker.
v. Grand Finals: Best of Seven (Bo7)
No coin-toss. First map pick is awarded to the upper bracket player. Remaining maps are chosen by the player who just lost the last map (in otherwords... the Grand Finals is a Bo7 with Loser's Pick)

I am starting this thread to find out if N.A. players would be interested in something similar to the
EU ffa pickup channel and tournament. I always enjoyed FFA under the classic rule set and I know I'm not alone. For those of you unfamiliar with what I am referring to here is the original "Classic FFA Pickup" thread by Yakumo:

If you are interested please take a moment to vote in the poll and/or reply.

So I am able to stream at 1080 res 60 fps without a problem. I don't even drop a single frame at 250 com_maxfps and picmip 8-16
(woot, ok now the whining)
However if I try to put my picmip to 0 (for the "standard" in stream configurations) I get a ton of pixelation on the stream. Unless of course I jack up my bitrate to 10k .... but that is just silly, creates other problems, and I know other streamers don't do that. Now to clarify the stream doesn't lag at picmip 0, but the pixelation that is created (i assume by the fast motion + more visuals) makes the video very unpleasant.
Now I realize I should be happy with the fact I can run a 1080 res 60 fps stream period. My OCD over this OBS is driving me nuts though. Anyone have any tips or tweaks I might not be aware of so I can get a proper picmip 0 stream. Or is this simply coming down to the fact that I am not a twitch partner and therefore cannot get that lovely "source" quality. I wouldn't really understand why it would be the later since even the recorded video on my PC is pixelated if i run "acceptable" bitrates of 3500 or less.
Please Halp :(

I know there is a fix for this but my google skills are unable to find it. Anyone? s_MuteWhenUnfocused is only for q3/wolfcam ... I assume I have to do more than just adding a cvar, but what is this magical fix? >_>

It is my pleasure to present the December 2014
NA.DuelCup. The double elimination format is here to stay, but there is a slight change this month. The "drop-drop" map selection process is considered a standard these days, but during the month of December players will select maps using "Pick-Pick" instead. I hope this will encourage players with severe map-phobia to sign-up. Don't try and hide I see you spectating!

Since our double elimination bracket is limited to 32 available sign ups any players past 32 will be on a waiting list that will be called upon on a first come first served basis. Should any byes are required due to uneven bracket numbers the players with the highest seeding will take priority.
Upper Bracket (including the first round) are a best of 3.
Lower Bracket is entirely best of 1 games.
Map selection for all rounds is carried out using "drop-drop". Coin-toss decides first drop and the players will drop maps until X remain; where X equals the "Best-of-Number" for the set. For example in a best of three each player drops two maps so that three remain, and then they pick until a single map is left to act as the tie breaker. The only exception is the Grand Finals. Since the grand finals is a best of seven no drops are required. First pick in the finals is decided by coin-toss and subsequent picks are chosen as the maps are played by the losing player.

I am currently collecting demos from all the players for rendering. There are a lot of games we didn't get to stream that deserve coverage. That process will take a bit of time, but for now I have exported highlights from the twitch VOD and uploaded them onto youtube. Every game that got streamed is sorted by "Player vs Player" for ease of browsing. You can still see the uncut version on twitch if you prefer however.

Greets. For the small group of us in North America that play TDM (real TDM) still on #NATDM.QL I have a question for the European TDM players. As I am sure you have all noticed to make the game mode work correctly you have to do quite a bit more than just click classic. Infact ... it requires a TON of cvars to be changed

Do you all also change machine gun damage back to 4? It was 4 dmg in TDM before 2.0. We already change starting ammo from 50 to 100, but I just noticed the other day that MG is REALLY strong in tdm and its because the previous damage of 4 is now 5. Do you change this? Could someone who spawns EU TDM pickups or official games please post your cvars for me? Thanks
PS: ID this sucks. Can you please just change it so we can select classic TDM and be done with it:? thanks.

Overall it went quite smooth... aside from the fact that group A and E had to be merged, and that no one knew group F only had 3 players show up (lol you guys). There is a Group X that has been created from the 3rd place winners of the brackets to get the last two additions to the Round of 16 bracket. The bracket will be played out in best of three map sets and includes a bronze match to decide third and fourth. Grand Finals will follow as a best of five. Good Luck to the players and Have Fun everyone.
HUGE Thank you to Jehar from tastyspleen.tv for casting the event.

Don't you just love ordering a new part for your PC? Especially when the particular part is one you can't find locally, and is part of your new machine you were making to stream your upcoming tournament. The only thing that's better than that is when that particular part keeps coming to you D.O.A. and you get send it back with R.M.A. ... twice. Oh man I absolutely "love" when this happens! So..
Anyone want to help stream the N.A. Duelcup event? No casting required.
I am being told my part will be here on Friday (just in time) but I do not want to risk it. I'm looking for someone with a good rig that can stream Quakelive at 60fps(preferred not required) that I can give server information and passwords to. You would be labeled as the official streamer (label is so people don't /kick you). No need to get on camera or say a single word. Since I have been unable to find a caster for three months now my back up plan was to have the stream up on one PC and admin from another. So don't feel like you need to be a personality or announce anything while streaming. Its purely for the game footage =)
Please get in touch on the forum, in game, or irc #duelcup
if you can help me out. Thank you!

Don't you think it is about time that North America had a proper online series? I am pleased to announce that is precisely what is being created! North American Quakelive players can register for the new online series today. Our first event starts this month and the details are below. Thank you and good luck! ~
DuelCup.com
• Group Stage: Best of 1
• Single Elim bracket: Best of 3
• If time becomes an issue the bracket will be finished on Day 2. Since this is our first cup the total number players per group will be dependent upon how many players check in on event day. While it would be fantastic if everyone who registers also checks in I realize this is not a major event yet and some players will simply not make it. In the future the tournament structure will be more static and these kind of issues "should" be of no concern.
• Semi Finals: Best of 3
• Bronze Finals: Best of 3
• Grand Finals: Best of 5

Important Notes:
In the future I hope to adopt a similar schedule to that of 125 fps so that the event isn't trying to cram everything into a single weekend. Saturday and Sunday were picked on this occasion since I have seen online N.A. tournaments struggle with multi-day-schedules, and (at the time) the days did not overlap with other QL events.
