How to prevent my guest from lagging me? (14 comments)
Posted by Arg @ 11:30 CDT, 15 September 2016 - iMsg
I own the house I live in as well as all the computers I am talking about. I pay the Internet bill.

My roommates are allowed to use the connection and the computer I set up for guests.

I want to prevent that computer from causing lag spikes as I am really fed of dying ingame because someone decided to wank that same time.

What I've done so far is setting up priority rules on the router (so called QoS rules)... my computer has the highest priority, all other devices the lowest. Quake Live still gets spikes sometimes.

Anything else I may try other than smashing the guest computer in pieces?

UPDATE 16/9/2016: I evaluated the possibility of opening a separate line. But then I realized it would be unnecessary and will carry its own downsides (roommates won't live here forever, and deactivating a line can be a pain in the ass where I live), plus 12Mbps are more than enough for QL + a limited media download...

I will opt for a new router as the current one allows QoS but not bandwith limiting by IP.
Temporary, partial solution will consist in installing a bandwith limiter on the guest computer and disabling wifi while I play.

Thank you for the suggestions, I will update the thread with the router I'll choose this weekend.

Sensi and Accel Pr0n - Post your own! (113 comments)
Posted by Arg @ 09:36 CDT, 8 September 2016 - iMsg
Hello everyone, I'm fiddling with my config and would like to know what you are currently using.

Here is my current configuration, you can copy it and use it as a model for your answer:

Mouse:
Razer Abyssus @ 1800dpi x 1000Hz

Cvars:
sensitivity: 2.25
m_pitch: 0.011
m_yaw: 0.011

QL Mouse accel driver settings (see here):
Sensitivity: 1
Acceleration: 0.0175
SensitivityCap: 1.62
Offset: 0
Power: 2
Post-ScaleX: 0.46
Post-ScaleY: 0.46

PS: Please post all the relevant vars for the sake of completeness... for example my sensi of 2.25 at 1800dpi would be meaningless without specifying I use halved pitch/yaw and driver post-scaling...

What do m_yaw and m_pitch really do? (21 comments)
Posted by Arg @ 05:53 CDT, 4 July 2016 - iMsg
Guides say m_yaw and m_pitch are multipliers to the sensitivity, both cvars defaults are 0.022.

According to what i found around the internets and some good sense, one could set these vars to different values in order to have different x and y sensitivities (essentially just changing the ratio between the two vars).

At the same time though, i found some pros using non-default values, but with both the cvars having the same non-default value like 0.014 or 0.011 for both m_yaw and m_pitch, thus mantaining the same default ratio of 1:1.

I was asking myself why didn't they just keep the defaults and pick a different sensitivity value.

This lead me to an hypothesis i'd like to discuss: what if m_pitch and m_yaw represent the least angular movement the model is able to move between one frame and another? Wouldn't it be good to set m_yaw and m_pitch to the lowest values possible and then raise the sensitivity to keep the same sens*yaw and sens*pitch values? This way the least angular movement my model would be able to do would be much smaller (thus precise) than 0.0022 and yet i'd have the same sensitivity I always used?

I tested it and, while the sensitivity has remained the same, I cannot notice any big difference in pointer precision, but it may be i'm just too noob to notice it. I also fear that by lowering values I may end up in more floating point approximation than before.

Pickup Timer Training Tool (9 comments)
Posted by Arg @ 17:08 CDT, 3 July 2016 - iMsg
I made this simple tool to train pickup timering and I'm sharing here in case somebody wants to give it a try.

All it does is showing you a randomized number between 0 and 59 representing your pickup time, and you have to calculate when the item will spawn again as quickly as possible. You can activate/deactivate solutions being shown and change a few parameters:
- Time allowed between questions;
- Custom respawn times (+25s, +35s, +whatever);

Hope somebody will find it helpful. If you want to try it, you can find it hosted here:https://www.googledrive.com/host/0B0iwTKxkjJPcS1ZBYzIwZ3hrejg

BANNED for the use of an ASCII character (38 comments)
Posted by Arg @ 07:36 CDT, 14 March 2016 - iMsg
I just got banned from a DOGs server for using an emote containing a pink svastika and the line "SHARE THE LOVE". It was obviously a joke and nonetheless i used ASCII characters and non offending language.

Is this allowed to ban a user for the use of an ambiguous ascii character? Or is it plain ok to ban people at the admin's will?

I feel this is a big misunderstanding but now i'm left with my elo 900 and the only playable server for me is off limits until the year 25000 (lol).

Thank you DOGs admin, whoever, wherever you are, i will start speccing you with fake accounts, recording demos and get you banned as soon as I catch you using cheats. Because i already know you do.
