Frazer "Fraze" Hockley has passed away (25 comments)
Posted by diegowar @ 21:19 CST, 22 November 2024 - iMsg
Repost from the announcement in the Kuachi Cups discord:

In Memory of Frazer "Fraze" Hockley

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend and esteemed community member, Frazer "Fraze" Hockley. As one of the longest-standing members of our Australian Quake community, Fraze's impact was felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him or watching him play.

Fraze began his competitive journey in Quake Live, quickly rising through the ranks with his exceptional skill and unwavering determination, side by side with his brother and sparring partner, Camma. His passion for the game took him across the globe to Europe, where he held his own against and defeated some of the world's best players. His performances were nothing short of inspiring, showcasing not only his personal talent but also elevating the profile of Australian players on the international stage.

Beyond his competitive achievements, Fraze was a generous mentor and entertainer. Through his tutorials and streams, he taught countless players the intricacies of the game in an entertaining and easy to understand manner, always eager to share his knowledge and help others improve. His ability to talk while playing a the highest level was extremely unique and this made him maybe the most entertaining quake streamer ever. His contributions have also been instrumental to the community in nurturing new talent and brought us together with entertainment and highlights. His streams were more than just gameplay; they were a reflection of his love for the game and passing on that passion to others who shared it.

In Diabotical, Fraze was part of some of the game's most unforgettable moments, whether it was his streams, his tournament matches, or his interviews. His gameplay was a perfect blend of high-level competition and entertainment. Similarly, in Quake Champions, he remained an absolute beast, quickly improving with his grit and grind approach and then consistently defeating top-tier players, and ultimately coming in 1st place in AQL4.

On a personal note, every time I faced Fraze in a match, you could feel his determination in game. Yet, no matter how intense the competition, he always took the time afterward to share some words about what he enjoyed about the game and have a laugh. His grit and relentless pursuit of excellence were qualities I think we all admired.

Fraze's legacy goes beyond his accolades and achievements. I think I speak for all of the community when I say he was a beacon of inspiration, a mentor, and a friend to many. His contributions have left an ever-lasting mark on our community, and his absence will be deeply felt.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Fraze. Thank you for the memories, you will be missed, but never forgotten.

When: October 29-30, 2022
Where: Barcelona, Spain

I had been so busy at the end of October I missed out on watching this live, but having just watched the VODs, I wanted to at least make a post about this nice Quake Champions LAN (maybe the last big one before a while), for those who didn't know about it.

It features some big names from the QPL : Australia Zenaku, Argentina Maxter, United States of America Dramis, Hungary Raisy, Estonia Cnz, and Canada Cha1n. Tons of locals were also there to enjoy the rare occasion, including many old school players, such as Spain Akiles or Spain Sombr4.

You can watch the VODs here :
- day 1
- day 2
(or on Twitch while they're still available)

If you are short on time, I would say the best matches are the winner bracket final, loser bracket final, and grand final.

For those who haven't followed Quake Champions since the last tournament, one of the most important change that happened was the fact that this QPL season, instead of having the regular matches only being used for rankings, they also decided prize ($150 for each map win, $50 for each map loss), making every match and map count even during regular season. See here for the official news.

As for the Stage Finals, as you can see in the brackets, this time even though still online, the tournament bracket will mix players from both regions right from the start, like I think we all wanted to see.

Here is the prize money for the Stage 1 Final ($100,000 total) :
21st - 24th - $1,000

Once again, because of ping differences, the tournament will first be split into two regional double-elim brackets (NA / EU). The top 3 from each will advance to the final double-elim bracket (played on Sunday - 16:00 CDT, 9 August 2020).

Stage 2 of the league is coming to an end, and players will once again face off at LAN, and the best of them will have their name on the belt.

The format has changed since Lucca :
- The tournament is now a double elim bracket (everything bo3, except WB SF / WB F / LB F which are bo5, and the grand final which is bo7 with a 1 map advantage to the player coming from the winner bracket)
- Instead of 4 players getting 2 BYE rounds based on rankings, it's now 8 players who get 1 BYE round (and they also chose their first round opponent).

Once again, 2 challengers from each league will have their shot at entering the tournament and the league, through a single elimination match against an opponent from the bottom two of their respective league. But this time, the challenger matches are counted as a round 1 in the bracket instead of having their own round.
The challengers are : Latvia bukster, Sweden Spart1e, United States of America sib and Australia ZenAku.

And from the league...
Top 1-8 : United States of America rapha, Germany k1llsen, Hungary Raisy, United States of America DaHanG, Italy vengeurR, Russia Cooller, Sweden toxjq, United States of America psygib
Not seeded : Belarus cYpheR, Russia baSe, Canada cha1n, Brazil nosfa, Poland Av3k, United States of America dramiS, United States of America dooi, United States of America Effortless
Facing the challengers : Ukraine Xron, Estonia cnz, United States of America whaz, Canada GNiK

After 10 Sundays of online Quake Pro League, the pros will once again face-off at LAN.

But before the 20 players single-elim bracket can truly begin, an initial round will be played where challengers (coming from the challenger league) will have a chance to steal the spot of a regular of the QPL.

Belarus cYpheR and Estonia cnz will be the challengers from EU (note : for a while Serbia Serious was in a good spot to be a challenger, but later dropped due to personal reasons).
United States of America dooi and Canada GNiK will be the challengers from NA.
Each challenger will face one of the bottom 2 players from their respective league.

The entire bracket can be followed here : Liquipedia
(note : the top 4 players from the world rankings are seeded two rounds ahead of everyone else, directly in the quarter finals)

Relegation, Quarters, Semis & Final are bo5, while Round of 20 and Round of 12 are bo3.

QuakeCon 2019 - Final Day (163 comments)
Posted by diegowar @ 05:42 CDT, 28 July 2019 - iMsg
Day 3, the last day of the round robin, was once again super tense.

As time went on, all eyes turned to Russia Cooller and Germany K1llsen, to see if they would be able to do it, and keep their top 2 placings.

After losing to Ukraine Xron in round 16, Germany K1llsen couldn't afford any more match losses, and the suspense kept rising up until the very last minute of the very last map of the very last match against Canada Cha1n.

But there was also some confusion, a lot of people didn't know how the players were ranked in the round robin, and I think there are still people who don't know. So here is how it works. It was a point system, where you got:

2.25 points for a 2-0 win
2 points for a 2-1 win
1 point for a 1-2 loss
0 point for a 0-2 loss

It was definitely a very tight fight for that n°2 spot. In the final rankings, Germany K1llsen has 37 points, United States of America Rapha is just behind at 36.5 points, and Hungary Raisy has 36.25 points.

But let's not forget about the real man of the day, Russia Cooller. He scored an impressive 38.5 points, out of a maximum 42.75 possible!, simply amazing from the man who already reached the QuakeCon Final in 2006 and 2010. Is the third time going to be the charm?

Only time will tell, but we will first be treated to a series of prize matches with casters. They promise to be close and entertaining. See liquipedia.net/quake for more details. Prizes will probably be announced during the broadcast.

The show starts at 07:00 CST on twitch.tv/quake (Grand Final at 14:00 CST).

QuakeCon 2019 - Standings after the first 2 days (138 comments)
Posted by diegowar @ 05:32 CDT, 27 July 2019 - iMsg
Day 2 of the 2019 QuakeCon Duel Tournament saw a little bit of chaos, with freezes, some maps had to be restarted, servers had to be reboot ... but out of it still came an incredible day full of tense matches, upsets, comebacks, etc ...

This possibility of showing all matches from all POVs has only just arrived, that it will already be sorely missed if it's absent from future tournaments.

What contributes to the excitement, is of course the format. A round robin with 10 matches happening at the same time, and all of them being of great importance. They are what determine what your ranking in the tournament will be, give or take 1 place, as Sunday matches will not be a bracket, but prize matches.

Unlike normal group stages, players here can't afford to lose matches and hope to peak later, they need to be at 100% all the time. And the tension is palpable.

After two long days, and a total of 13 matches played for each player, the standings are:

What becomes apparent from these standings, is that unless things go wrong, six players will be battling for the well coveted top 2 spots of the round robin, giving access to the Grand Final and a shot at being the QuakeCon 2019 champion :

Russia Cooller will be playing against Xron, Nosfa, Whaz, Cha1n, Br1ck and Dramis
Ukraine Xron will be playing against Cooller, Av3k, K1llsen, Dahang, Spart1e and Vengeur
Germany K1llsen will be playing against Base, Garpy, Xron, Nosfa, Whaz and Cha1n
United States of America Rapha will be playing against Nosfa, Whaz, Cha1n, Br1ck, Dramis, Effortless
Italy Vengeur will be playing against Raisy, Toxjq, Psygib, Base, Garpy and Xron
Hungary Raisy will be playing against Vengeur, Sib, Toxjq, Psygib, Base and Garpy

We can predict that United States of America Rapha will be a heavy favorite for all his matches, but he stands 1 win behind Cooller/Xron/K1llsen, so he must hope that at least two of them will lose one match. It is a guarantee that at least 1 of them will lose a match, as Cooller and Xron will face off, as well as K1llsen and Xron. It also means that Cooller, Xron and K1llsen have their fate in their hands, each of them can try to win all their matches and will be guaranteed to reach the final.

Other than Russia Cooller vs Ukraine Xron (09:00 CST) and Germany K1llsen vs Ukraine Xron (12:00 CST), another match to look forward to is Hungary Raisy vs Italy Vengeur (09:00 CST), who right off the bat will face off to determine which of them will stay on track and keep their chances to reach the top 2. There are many more matches that will be interesting, too many to mention them all.

Played a couple of games with Major on Nightmare, as usual trying to win by 40 frags difference for fun, and because I hit a couple mid-airs, I decided to go through the demos and try to make something with that, just to see what it would look like. Well here it is.

How bad is it ?

This is a speed-run of Quake 3 Arena single player in Nightmare difficulty.

I made a small intro which looked silly on paper and looks even stupider now. But I decided to leave it :)

This is the last run I will ever make of this game, it took way too much time and effort, and I'm not even satisfied with the results.

Also : Don't expect pro-player aim here, I'm just a random guy. But this is the world record as far as I know.
