As part of our QuakeLive public beta launch coverage,
QuakeUnity brings you an interview with id Software's
John Carmack and
Marty Stratton. John and Marty discuss the QuakeLive backend infrastructure, their work with mod authors to bring additional features to the game, and the hiring of developers from inside the Quake community. Additionally, the duo weigh in about the complexities of the technology behind QuakeLive, the possibility of licensing the system, their commitment to stop cheating, and the marketing strategy behind the game.
Although id Software has no plans to allow user-made modifications to be incorporated into QuakeLive, they have gone out of their way to hire one of the most successful Quake III mod authors to help them with their project. id revealed to QuakeUnity that Kevin "arQon" Blenkinsopp, author of the popular mod Challenge ProMode Arena (CPMA), has been hired as a contractor on QuakeLive. If you're not familiar with CPMA, it is the premiere mod of choice for Quake III tournaments. It includes competitive features such as modified gameplay physics, multi-view demos, and highly customizable HUDs.

Sometime in February,
subz' decided that he'll make a Q3 movie, because Q3 is so awesome to work it, and he was sort of getting into CPMA with #cpmpickup and so on. So he asked for a few demos, and he got a little bit, then a little bit more, and then fei from Shaolinproductions dumped the gq4 demos over his head, so all of a sudden he had this epic amount of very nice footage, and realized that this will have to be something more.
He has been sorting demos since then, thinking up scenes, and whatnot, and actually started working on it only in June. Thanks are mentioned in the movie, some in the readme, but some extra special thanks to wIz4 for his advice on quality encoding. More technical stuff about the movie you can find out in #unpredictables on irc.quakenet.org. Two audio streams are available for the video. The first track has VQ3 hit sounds while the second has CPM sounds.
Movie starring: funnyb, ahxnxa, beng, oblivion, griffin, bud, luke, mov9k, nekon, 2b, reptile, 5cared, amph, anima, ddk, dmlzr, fiend, gouki, krysa, liam, mantra, n0rz, ovo, ph1l, raziel, vamp1re, breeze, subz.

QuakeUnity.com
has a write up on the id Software press conference and John Carmack keynote. A much smaller than usual crowd was on hand to listen to id Software's press conference followed by John Carmack's keynote here at QuakeCon 2008.
The main highlights of the press conference were the official DOOM4 announcement and the announcement of Wolfenstien RPG and Doom II RPG from id Mobile, the cell phone gaming division of the company. Very little new information was given about id's upcoming ti
tle Rage. Compared to last year's very exciting announcements of Quake Live and the Wolfenstein movie, this year was fairly uneventful.
I'll be working on getting the video up sometime tomorrow. Technical difficulties relating to being rushed to setup and not being able to properly test our equipment before are the reasons for the delay. :(

A new version of the
Seismovision demo pla
yer has been released. This release adds support for Tremulous, Warsow, Quake4 1.42 along with a bunch of fixes.
An important feature had to be added to this release to play back Quake 4 demos prior to v1.42. Since v1.42 the Quake 4 CD-Key is encrypted, this poses a problem to the versions prior v1.42 as they cannot read the encrypted key and would ask it for prohibiting demo play. To play back demos for older versions, Seismovision needs to have the Quake 4 CD-Key. This can be entered in the Quake 4 Options, CD-Key.
- added: Warsow (wd7 (v0.12), wd8 (v0.21) and wd9 (v0.31)) demo support. Extended support for play lists and demo controls.
- added: Tremulous (dm_69) demo support.
- added: Day of Defeat: Source (Steam) (dem), Half-Life Deathmatch: Source (Steam) (dem) and Opposing Force (Steam) (dem) demo support.
- added: Quake 4 v1.42 AVA for .netdemo (v1.04, v1.10, v1.20, v1.30, v1.41 and v1.42) and .demo (v1.04, v1.10, v1.20, v1.30, v1.41) and ndmo85 (v1.42)
- added: Quake 4 key input to make demo play back of demos prior v1.42 possible.
- added: Quake 4 demo scanner for identifying files required for demo play (right-click on demo to access)
- added: Smart mod detection for multiple versioned installations for .netdemo's (Check Seismovision's Quake 4 documentation)
- added: Simplified-Chinese language (Thanks to Si 'FiO' Wei)
- added: Call of Duty 2 iwd scanner to easily manage non-standard .iwd that may cause demo playback malfunctions. Automatically saves selections.
- fixed: Enemy Territory demos not playing in a play list.
- fixed: America's Army demos not playing at all.
- fixed: Playback options not saving correctly.
- fixed: Miss detection on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault demos.
- fixed: Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory play lists not working and also fixed screen saver
Seismovision is a very versatile demo player which makes it very easy to play back demos on your computer. Simply double-click on a demo to play it, whether it is from a compressed archive, over a network or right of your desktop. Even create demo play lists with the Seismovision Play list editor. Configure all your games easily and choose from a collection of configuration files to suit your needs. Seismovision also offers demo controls for many of its games. With the ability to downgrade games to play older demo types makes Seismovision the all-in-one demo player!

Some team tricking aspects were pioneered here, such as linear vector rocket propulsion. Long time it's been, eh? Team iT has been dead for about a year now, but the project needed completion!

In early July, PlanetQuake4.net had the opportunity to preview the Quake4 1.3 Point Release at id Software's offices in Texas. At the time, I was on assignment in Texas for the WVSG Summer Championships. The timing couldn't have been better. At this time, id wasn't exactly sure when the patch would be released, but we knew it would be fairly soon. While previewing such anticipated patch to my favorite series of video games was an amazing opportunity, PQ4 happened to be the first and only organization to get the sneak peak of the 1.3 update.
Before departing, I asked if it would be fine to shoot some random video around their offices for all the id fans around the world. For security purposes, we were limited to general areas of the offices, but those are the most interesting. The hallway which you must walk through to reach all the employee offices is filled with magazines and posters from id titles ranging from Doom to RTCW. The video first starts off in a closet in the back of the offices which houses unopened copies of id and partner company titles. It then proceeds to the previously mentioned hallway and then to the main lobby and conference room. These rooms hold many id awards and memorabilia. You'll see original Doom models, the models used on the Team Arena box, and much more . The video runs almost 7 minutes and is presented in 1280x720 High Definition video.

I arrived here in Texas a few hours ago. Still waiting for UltimateP to arrive with all the desktops and other equipment. I did get a chance to go down to the event and walk around a bit. While it's much smaller than the GAYlord, it's a very good sized room.
The tourney area looks practically setup and the volunteers are putting the finishing touches on the BYOC. I didn't feel like getting yelled at for taking pics inside the event area, especially since I don't have a press badge yet and lots of the organizers here don't play q3 or q4 and have no idea who i am. I have 2 pics from an early setup from inside the hotel room. Currently, I have have my 2 laptops setup, but later today, the room will have a total of 7 computers.
Hopefully I'll get the chance later tonight to work the registration line which is always fun. (plus it means no waiting in line for me. ;)...

The event doesn't start to Thursday, but we'll have some sort of content available tomarrow. Can't wait to see how the room looks with our 7 computers setup!

A High Definition (1280x720) video showing many of the exhibits featured at E3 2006. Pictures can only do so much justice to an event this large and exciting.
You will see many things including: the Nintendo, Sony, and Activision booths, 'Prey' being featured at the Fatal1ty booth, BF 1942, the NCSOFT show that was fined $5,000 for being too noisy, the AGEIA physics card, the beautiful Nokia booth, the Quake 4 themed Intel booth, Dilbert, the Powerpuff girls, and much more! Also included with the video is a bit of ET:QuakeWars footage that wasn't included in the first video. The video runs almost 8 minutes and will try and capture the feeling of what it was like at the event.

Video of a shootout from the Fatal1ty booth at E3 2006. The Fatal1ty booth at the video game industry tradeshow was on par with major corporations occupying a fairly large area in the far right corner of the south hall.
I happened to pick an interesting shootout to film. Fata1lty's challenger which was chosen from audience requested that they play "Over the Edge" instead of "The Longest Day" which was the default map being played. Fatal1ty was hesitant to agree to the map change even after he was taunted by his challenger who requested "Over the Edge" since that was the map he was most familiar with. Fatal1ty finally agreed, but only if his opponent first played "The Longest Day" and kept a positive score. In the end, his opponent ended up with a negative score, but Fatal1ty agreed to play the second map anyway. Commentary of the two matches is provided by
Radio iTG's Tosspot who was on hand to provide commentary for the large crowd watching the match. The video runs 12 minutes. * Upcoming videos include: Booth Babes! and an interview with the Girlz of Destruction.

I didn't think it was going to happen, but I finalized my E3 travel plans last week. I will be attending the event along with
Prognar, who lots of you know from his QuakeCon 2005 Fatal1ty Interview. He also traveled to Activision's headquarters to preview ET: QuakeWars for PlanetQuake4.net a few months ago.
Unlike most websites which will be covering E3, we won't be focusing on console related items, but instead computer related stuff. On my list so far of things to cover is the Enemy Territory: QuakeWars LAN being held at the event, the GGL VSports All Star Game, the VIA booth w/ the g0d girls, the Fata1lty booth, and ofcourse BOOTH BABES. I'm sure other things will catch my eye, but those are on the agenda for sure.
I'm asking for your input on other things at the event that you might be interested in or how you think the items I mentioned above should be covered. The QuakeWars LAN is the thing I've been giving the most thought to. I plan on getting video, pictures, and writing my thoughts about the game along with mini interviews with attendees and Activision (maybe id and/or SplashDamage also) reps. Our main source of coverage will be pictures and video.

Last weekend it was decided that myself and fellow PQ3/PQ4 staff member
UltimateP would travel to New York City this weekend to cover the Trans-Atlantic Showdown. At the time we made all our reservations, we weren't sure if we would be able to film everything inside the event, but since then we have been granted unrestricted access to film. As we did for Winter CPL, we'll offer High Defintion 1280x720 video along with a much much lower resolution version for those on modems and people don't don't like downloading large files.
Our current plan is to film the players and the event in general along with player interviews. I also have gotten confirmation from my friend "bilz" who made the popular QuakeCon movie from this past year that he would put together a overview video soon after the event's conclusion.
PlanetQuake4.net has undergone a minor template redesign along with a newly laid out index and download page. The download page now features a nice comment system for users to post their feedback on files. There are still a few problems with the code (the tables going off the screen in IE) which I have to fix, but overall I'm happy with it. PQ3 and PQ4 specialize on file hosting so allowing users to post their thoughts on files using a nice comment system was something that was long overdue.

I've been busy with school, but I have a few cool items up my sleeve which everyone should be interested in. First, I am going to be putting together a piece called "Inside id", which will include pictures and text talking about id's offices.
Second, a few weeks ago, Activision, id Software's publisher e-mailed me about going to Los Angles to preview Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. I couldn't make the trip, but my friend Prognar went in my place. The QW preview was held yesterday and Prognar is already back and working hard on his article.
I'm also working on updated versions of the videos UltimateP and I shot at the winter CPL event. I had just bought the camera I used less than a week before the event, and wasn't completely familiar with ripping and rendering the HD videos at the right resolution. So I should be re-releasing the major videos like the Fatal1ty and Tourney videos again in their proper resolution....
Also, I have been thinking about releasing some videos I took over the years but never put up for download. Examples would be video of Raven's Rick Johnson at QuakeCon 2003 talking about Quake4 (never put up because of the bad audio) and video of the combined PunkBuster & Urban Terror workshop held at QuakeCon 03 also (the audio on this isn't as bad, but still not that great).

In a few hours, I will be boarding a plane heading to what will be my fourth QuakeCon event. While I'm really excited about going, I always feel a little nervous. In my mind before the event I always have grand ideas of filming everything in sight, taking tons of pictures, meeting certain people, etc. But you never know till you get to the event and the times comes if you are able to do what you had planned.
I make the journey to QuakeCon for a few different reasons. One of them would be covering the event for the many people around the world who are unable to attend. Of course the other reason is to have fun. But because of the first reason I gave for going to QuakeCon, it can a bit stressful. My goal from my first year attending QuakeCon was to cover the happenings of the event that I would be interested in seeing covered myself. The quality of the reporters at QuakeCon varies tremendously. At the high end, you organizations such as Radio iTG who are excellent in what they do. On the low end you have reporters from more main stream media organizations such as G4 (TechTV) that have no clue about anything. I have to admit, I had a hard time determining if the the reporter G4 sent last year was male or female. He just looked so weird walking around in his robe.
This last year, I think did a good job coverage wise with pictures and videos. This year I want to focus more on written material such as this blog I'm writing here on ESR and various articles describing the happenings at the event. The key with any QuakeCon coverage is to be the first person to get it ready for viewing. This shouldn't be a problem.
Once I get to QuakeCon around 11:30 Eastern tomorrow, I'll be sure to have some pictures of the four computer setup in my hotel room. Stay tuned!!

This is video from the QuakeCon 2004 Q3 1vs1 and Doom3 1vs1 Grand Final matches. The movie includes video of ZeRo4 & czm being announced to the crowd, playing part of their matches, and video of when czm defeated ZeRo4 to take home $25,000. For the Doom3 Grand Finals, video is included of Fatal1ty & Daler being introduced to the crowd, playing part of their matches, and video of when Fatal1ty defeated Daler. Video of parts of the award ceremony is also included.
The video should give people who weren't at the event a feel of the excitement of the people in the room. During the Quake3 1vs1 finals, the crowd was a bit more excited then during the Doom3 finals. The reason was that during the Doom3 finals, the crowd couldn't hear the in-game sounds and the projectors showing the match flickered every few seconds. Overall both tourneys were exciting to watch, and it looks like Doom3 has secured its spot as a game for tournaments in the future.
