IEM European Championship (87 comments)
Posted by Rondrian @ 09:59 CDT, 29 October 2009 - iMsg
The ESL just announced a change for the Intel Extreme Masters European Championship. They increased the number of participants from 16 to 32 players online and the top 16 will play in the offline finals instead of the top 8. That change also includes that now 12 players will meet in the World Championships in Hannover instead of 8.

That also means that the prize money for the European Championship is increased to $5,200 for the online group stage. The offline prize money stays at $8,000, that makes a total of $13,200 for the European Championship.

16 players will be invited directly, while another 16 players can qualify over four qualification cups. The top four of each qualification cup will join the Intel Extreme Masters European Championship.

The first five invites for the European Championship will be announced tomorrow.

Anton "Cooller" Singov at the GC Dubai (45 comments)
Posted by Nukm @ 09:03 CDT, 16 October 2009 - iMsg
Even though Russia Anton "Cooller" Singov didn't make an appearance in the Quake Live scene yet he still received an invite for the Global Challenge Dubai. fragster.de fragster analyse what can be expected from the mousesports player after his heyday and how he will continue after the Dubai tournament.
"We've motivated him a bit" says mousesports-Manager René "Rene" Lannte when fragster spoke with him; successfully as it seems. Cause if you look at the playing time of his Quake Live Account, it seems that Cooller is definitely taking the tournament in Dubai serious.

Edit: Taken from the mousesports-Twitter:

Visa issues fixed - Cooller will travel to Dubai tomorrow. Thanks to @ESLMichal for doing an AWESOME job in Dubai! ^RL

rapha: "[Cooller] could do it again" (58 comments)
Posted by Thorin @ 17:29 CDT, 15 October 2009 - iMsg
Quakecon and Gamescom champion United States of America Shane "rapha" Hendrixson has given an interview to SK-gaming prior to the Global Challenge Dubai, for which his first game is scheduled to be played on the 18th of October. rapha talks about the Dubai event, Q3 legend Cooller and his fellow Americans. Find out why he considers DaHanG "a force to be reckoned" or l1nkje someone who "can't be taken lightly". Here is a teaser:
SK-Gaming: Cooller has been at least half out of shape for the past couple of years and seemingly only capable of winning a great map here or there in comparison to his form of old. What is your take on the current iteration of Cooller? Is he ready to reclimb the mountain and become one of that very small but elite handful of players again do you think? Do you feel as though he is a player who could rediscover the drive which once made him close to unbeatable?
rapha: I think he just needs the right motivation again to start putting in the time and effort needed to be at the top , he just needs something to play for. Maybe it's more $, maybe it's something else. There's no doubt that he could do it again, it's just a matter of whether he be willing to do it :) because knowing him, he hates losing.
If that tickles your fancy, check SK-gaming to read the full interview.

EG.DaHanG: "I would like to have a turn" (80 comments)
Posted by dunnisdone @ 09:35 CDT, 15 October 2009 - iMsg
Kristina "Korini" Chin of myEG.net just sat down with United States of America Chance "Chance" Lacina and United States of America Tim "DaHanG" Fogarty of EG Evil Geniuses to talk before ESL Dubai. The interviews cover everything from the groups to their hopes for the Quake community, but you can check out a small sample below:

EG|Korini: How do you feel about the bracket stage's best of five format and the fact that players will not be able to drop maps because of it?
EG|Chance: I think it's awesome. The more maps we play the more likely it is for the better player to win. Who wouldn't want that? The only drawback could be that it takes longer to play matches, but personally this doesn't bother me and it's well worth the trade.

EG|Korini: What are your thoughts about the overall progression of QL as a competitive game? Does the current level of competition have any impact on the growth of the community?
EG|DaHanG: It's been cool to observe the styles evolve in Quake Live, especially on the new maps where it's so evident. There are certainly talented players willing to play, but I think some old school players coming back will help spur growth and interest. Cooller, for instance, has decided to come back and there are tons of comments on esreality.com supporting him. Hopefully more old players return and the scene is further revitalized!

Every second of Dubai... (329 comments)
Posted by Carmac @ 13:10 CDT, 9 October 2009 - iMsg
It is time to share thoughts as the first non-id Software QuakeLive LAN is getting closer.

Here's your mission for October 17-19. Get rid of your woman! Get your girl to visit her parents or get her some Ikea vouchers. Start hoarding snacks and beverages. Cancel all appointments, get a day off on Monday (Oct 19 - sorry for that, but we couldn't do anything about it.) Get yourselves acquainted with the schedule and make sure you convert the time.

Because you'll be watching the Global Challenge in Dubai.

I'm excited. Our friends at id Software have put everything aside for the Intel Extreme Masters Dubai Global Challenge event to make it possible for us to run the first ever non-id LAN. We will see sixteen of the world's best players compete at a game we all love.

What really gets me hard, though, is how we will be able to package the event and deliver to you. [Fingers crossed.] Unless we get unforeseen technical difficulties, we will see a competition close to the way it should be shown:

1) Every single match will be played on stage.
2) Every single match will be shown on ESL TV.
3) Unless you want to, you will not miss a single frag in the entire competition.

Just enough cake
As a spectator I always hated it how events had a million matches crammed up in one weekend. You were forced to miss a ton of action and even in key stages you were often forced to pick which match you wanted to watch.

I never saw the point. Why give people more cake than they can possibly eat?

The idea for Dubai is to give you an absolute feast. We planned the schedule such that every match will be played on stage and every match will be on stream. The only overlap you will get is for the last "playday" in each group - the games have to be played at the same time to ensure there's no match fixing.

We'll have 16 players in four groups played over the first two days. The third day will bring an eight-man single elimination playoff bracket. And that will be in a best of FIVE format. I expect the playoffs to be a battle of epic proportions.

24 best of 3's and 8 best of 5's. No overlap. Have as much of this cake as you like.

All 32 matches will be brought to you on a good (but not Premium) quality ESL TV stream which you will not have to pay for. The voices of the event will be James "2GD" Harding, Joe Milller and, most likely, some of the pro gamers who would be free to do it. Or maybe even me, if they have me.

See you in Dubai
I have no doubt that the lineup of players gathered in Dubai could not be improved (maybe except for k1llsen's absence). Unless you force Av3k to practice and bitchslap the oldschoolers out of retirement.

Thanks to the hard work of the guys over at id Software (thanks SyncError and TTimo!!!) and ESL we will be able to deliver one of the best spectator experiences in recent years. We're doing this for you.

And if that's enough to ask for something in return...
Follow the event.
Spread the word.
Play QuakeLive.
Get your friends to try it!

It's important. Go, now!

----

Seven important questions!!!
1) Will it be four in a row for rapha?
2) Cooller is practicing like crazy. How well will he do?
3) Will anyone dare play strenx on DM6?
4) Will he have a 100% win percentage on it?
5) Who will be the dark horse?
6) Who's going to be the most talked-about ragequit?
7) Will you spray cum all over the place?

oh yeah and follow me on Twitter
