I'm not sure about this whole deal. If some established people like Mori would collect the money, sure. But right now, okay, we had a message from tox and strenx but they can't lose any money over this, so of course they would trust anyone who promised them the goodies. Strenx was also collecting donations sometime back, which he gave to tournaments. So if he was able to set all that stuff up alone, why does he need the middle man now? Just seems fishy.
Personally I'm not interested in humouring any paranoia about things being fraudulent. Having had extensive experience with fraudulent sales in the past, with transactions via paypal, I am 100% certain that paypal always strongly favour the buyer in any appeal, so I can't lose my money in the medium term.
I would consider if there was a trusted person like memento, and if the players pay back the money if they win more at the tournament than they got from the donations (like evil did to winz last year)
Also it's a bit difficult to decide who to donate for at the moment.
It would be good if all donations went to a single pool, then there is an open tournament and the winner gets the Quakecon travel as price. People who are already sponsored shouldn't be allowed to enter.
It's really hard to give back to each individual doner once they've already donated... lol.
Imagine if the last DHW prize had to be paid back to the doners who donated. There were at least 50 people who donated. Also, I think that defeats the purpose of donating. You donate to see a cause turn into an actual thing. You don't say, "Hey once you've cured cancer, can I have all my money back from the patients who'll pay you for the cure?"
Anyways, I think I already stated my view on this in the other thread. It's fine as long as it doesn't become a regular thing where pros start asking around for people to sponsor them. But then again, as much as the pros say they want to win, if we sponsor all 3 who posted... only one of them will/can win :P
I'm not donating because I think they will win, I'm donating because the tournament will be better with tox, strenx and avek there than it would be without them.
We're the Quake community.
If they can't do it for themselves, we may just lend a hand.
Though i do understand the suspicions of losing your donations based on trust, but it would be nice (as smari mentioned) to have a single pool for donations - for the sake of simplicity... all we need is the median-man to guarantee the process will be executed.
First time in years I probably won't watch it live. Gimme dota \o/
Like navi vs eg/dk in the final.
On topic. Maybe those players should play for more than 15 days a year and compete in 125fps/faceit. There is enough competition and it doesn't require much time.
Well free holiday GIMME GIMME
The compendium is such a joke. Valve gets tens of millions for hours of work, and only 25% goes to where it matters. And they can't fix the prizepool distribution too, or make a legit league like in LoL, no, too lazy for that.
dont see the problem imo. the more players at quakecon the better the tournament will be. if everyone donates some pocket change we can send multiple players. whats wrong with that? :D
so far the people handling the donations seem legit, lets hope it stays that way.
One thing i'd like to point out: why does everybody have to go withh the most impersonal, boring option for crowdfounding? And by that i mean paypal donations.
I would like to see some effort from these players asking for money, a good start would be setting up a page on indiegogo/kickstarter/ulule/whatever crowdfounding site. They would have to put some work in a presentation video where they give some good motivation for donating to them and they could probably set up a reward system for donators (i'm not asking for anything extra fancy, just maybe handshake at next lan + signed mousepad or something). Instead these players think their name will suffice to get enough money, they are coming out as lazy if you ask me.
And, I will type it again, I would much prefer sending to quakecon some young new talent (eg sev3n or ash) who actually contributes in keeping the scene alive instead of some oldschool lazy pro that didn't even bother signing up for the last sunday cup.
I considered your idea at first, but it would only serve to create more drama and cost a lot more to do. Also obviously requires a couple of weeks planning and a couple of weeks more to leave it up. It's not good for the player to be unsure whether he'd go until the last moment.
Perhaps if we made a collective fund for top players, but a lot earlier in time it could have worked. But there's still the heavy commission fees and heavy management to solve.
Are the players actually putting up ANY of the money themselves? I understand it's expensive to travel to Texas but I hope they are atleast making an effort to cover some of the costs themselves (like 50%)
I'd personally prefer to see all this money going towards the Prague LAN TDM prize pool...
Relax skint, quakers are pretty succesful people, unless youre hitsu ofc. That perfectionist mindset that the game programs in our brains make us successful people. We can donate so euros go to qcon, donate for prague prizepool, and keep donating. Because this is what we love, and if you love something, money becomes irrelevant. Love me some quakecons with euros and drama.
I wouldn't want to give to a player who is only active around tournament time. As much as I'd like to watch the old pros I'd much rather donate towards those who have a passion for the game and community and continues to play even during the quiet times. Gotta give something back too you know.
This is so shitty. All three of them made us smile, rage, enjoy the game that we so much love and now you are shitting on them .Sad.
If there were still gaming 24/7 they would be either virgins or blind. U want people to play only quake and do nothing else. Pathetic. Make them those eshirt or smth and let me enjoy the show .....
In some countries the lowest salaries can be from 2000-1500 euros (see swiss, ger, nor, lux....etc) but at other countries the lowest salaries is less than 500 euros (pol, port, balkan countries...).
So, yes its easier you go to QC if you have a job and live in Ger than when you have a job and live at Pol.
So for all you hard-workers kids, the donations its not about job, but supporting the game and gamers that you like and enjoy so see them play.
Also dont forget that at our local football/baskeball team when we are supporting them we always donate even the players are being paid.
I think the biggest mistake is that we debating on issue.
yeah debating issues are always bad. (ROFL)
Lets all be conformist who never challenges anything.
I think you should move to North Korea. Same mindset.
If its that simple teen, then don't start up wall of text bs argumentation.
and that its a mistake discussing the issue.
(still baffled anyone could state that)
As donations are good system to see even more quality matches on the event i am pondering.
Some of the guyz asking for donations did win events with prize money, how come they didnt do the smart thing and think to put away an amount of money for the next event they feel they would like to go?
I mean being economical about it is a good thing, rite?
Anyway i belive that if the donor wins, he should then give a portion of the money correlating to the sum he was donated to an online tourney prize pool. I think thats the correct way to handle this.
i wonder that that aren't that much games as an e-sport. i consider quake as the same mindset of starcraft and so on, i wished there were more sponsorship around the world to the supporters to play in a high level of gaming.
Me personally i'd send money for an entertaining player; why not, its no different from paying to see a movie.
But i do not really approve all this begging,i'm more in favour of a perform in the previous tourney then ask for money rather than this plz donate so i can go kinda feel.
The fact is, there ain't enough money in Quake these days and some of the players deserve more and I'd gladly donate to see more of them so if that's the way it is then that's the way it's gotto be.
I would say the money should be used for the basics, that means travel, food, drink accommodation and it should be a % of the total cost of the trip, as I am not a fan of paying for everything as it might demotivate a player, and some might even use it as a free holiday when they don't really want to go.
Every player that wants in should submit a proposed cost sheet of the travel cost as that is the main killer for a lot of people.
The rest of the payments should be standardised and very simple.
£50 dollars a night for accommodation.
£20 dollars a day for food and drink.
ADD TRAVEL BREAKDOWN COSTS HERE
Example
I want to go to quakecon from london. Cheapest options of course.
Home to London Airport x 2= £40 (actual cost)
Accommodation x3 nights = £150 (maximum allocated amount. I would have to double that for my own room or sleep somewhere cheaper)
Food+drink for 3 nights = £60 (maximum allocated amount)
Dallas Airport to Quakecon x2 = £30 (actual cost)
Air Fare £500 (actual cost)
So I would rather use the money to make it easier for MORE players to get to events so right there, it would be like they win no matter what.
Need a nice website, or section on ESR with established names who have done this before and it should be open to readers as they are the one's who would fund most of it.
Not sure you should be able to support only one player, money should go into a pot and distributed by appropriate people who recognise the costs involved in relation to the participant.
There should be no shame in applying, we all know it generally does not pay financially to play quake (only a few players make a profit-even really good players are running at a loss in the long tun) and good games give viewers something they enjoy so they are getting something for their money.
You could also setup a page on here which asks what users how much would they donate on an annual basis, you would then get some kind of gauge for what sort of money you might raise and what % of funds you can offer players off their trip.
There should also be something to encourage new players, so if an unknown is getting some good results and is not a complete troll or obvious cheat, maybe they could get in on it.
But me for the point of this should be to offer a BIG REDUCTION IN COSTS for potential players to get to these events as I have always felt that was the biggest hurdle. If the funds cover that and there is money left, then boost the purse.
Yeah donate.
What next, donate to them for just coming online?
Dont tell me that good QL pro players dont have the money to go to TX. They have sponsors, game gear deals, etc, dont they?
Man, I would be so ashamed to ask for donations or accept them. I'd rather work 24/7 to get the money myself and go there like a proper man.
Why not?
Is QL community really so abandoned by sponsors and gaming/event companies that they need to beg for money?
Is it really that bad?
No offense, I dont look into other people's money or say what they should do with it, just curious.
