They won't be, I grabbed the leak off piratebay about a week ago. It's XP fast, with Vista eyecandy. Would run fine with 512mb of ram, compared to Vista needing at least 2gb to function properly.

It's a massive difference from Vista. It's got the Vista eye candy, while being faster, and having a smaller memory footprint than XP.

No, Win Me + Win 2k were completely different OS's, not just different versions of the same one - NT (O/S 2 -> Windows NT 3.1 -> NT 3.5 -> NT4 -> Win2k -> XP -> Vista -> Win7) was developed independently from the 9x kernel (dos -> win 3.1 -> 95 -> 98 -> Me).

No matter how bad Vista feels, its nothing in comparison to the shitness of the 9x kernel. I can certainly imagine that it'd only take some tweaks + focused optimisation to make Vista feel better than XP.

I work for an MS only consulting company so I'm no fundie, although I do use Linux a lot in my spare time. Just keep in mind the Vista betas had better performance than the final product.

Seven pre-beta and beta are promising though, but don't pay the ferry man until he gets you to the other side.

the vista beta's i remember had memory leaks galore. must've been a different set, it was still shit, but it wasn't as shit as in the betas that i fooled around with.

yep, more RAM to deal with the added complexity this OS offers. new functions -> more resources

then you'll have to learn to configure a few functions. basically just turn superfetch off and configure a few network settings. maybe turn off the shitty sidebar and you're there

unfortunately, microsoft decided with vista to enable a few functions per default that arent exactly productive for the average users. people just couldnt deal with that and called it a crap OS
i cant figure it out honestly, because people do seem to be able to figure out how to use sixth gear and set up the climatronic if they buy a new car. but obviously, in the software world, RTFM does not apply anymore

no one's reading manuals, I agree. but people will probably never change in that regard, so screw it. and microsoft should use some common sense and ship it with a good configuration. :p

win vista specs however are just way over the top, it just has to be a shit piece of code. or can you name a single feature that is not present in say mac os 10 or current linux distros and that is worth the consumption of resources? this is not supposed to be a windows vs mac/linux post, but obviously microsoft does something wrong when others can achieve even more impressive stuff with (wild guess) a fourth the hardware requirements.

some features: ipv6 (whole new tcpip stack in general), lots of new client policies, new NTFS, new indexing, readyboost & superfetch, network access protection (NAP), user account control, the integrated spyware program named windows defender, the whole entertainment stuff like media center, text to speech/speech to text, ..

could go on there; and if windows 7 does the whole shebang on considerably less resources, i'd be really surprised

yeah they should have configured it for the average guy out of the box, definitely. they obviously went overconfident there, and now all of us who spend their time with microsoft OS have to suffer for it
i really appreciate the both longhorn OSes vista/server08 though for all the new technology they offer; especially on a admin point of view - really a new world of possibilities there

and yes, Windows 7 is correctly optimized, a whole new build. Vista was XP with a bunch of stuff stacked on top of it.

Oh, so because I can't use Cubase SX3 on Vista, I'm a dummy? :) How the f*ck am I supposed to compose music then? Buy Cubase 4 for a couple of hundred bucks, which is money that I don't have? Nice argument, placing everyone who doesn't use Vista in the same boat. XP works fine, and I can compose, record, mix and master music without any problems with Cubase SX3 on XP with 4 gb ram (3 gm available of course). Why the f*ck would I want to upgrade to Cubase 4 and Vista then huh? It would cost a LOT of money (or at least it's alot of money to me, since I don't have much left when I have paid all my bills and set aside money for food and hygiene products).
