If you agree that criminalization is not an effective deterrent then your whole argument that legalization will turn the nation into potheads falls flat. Yes, people who spend all day smoking weed are quite useless, but not even all of them (I know a few TOP software developers who smoke weed like cigarettes and are still more productive than most others).

But saying that casual use is harmless enough (which it is, compared to just about any other recreational activity) and that the main reason for criminalization is those who become complete potheads is a stupid argument. By that logic video games, fast food, television, fuckit, EVERYTHING should be illegal.

I think fewer people smoke weed in countries where it is legal anyway. By making it disallowed it enhances the 'cool' factor which imo encourages a lot of rebellious teens to start smoking, and by grouping it with hardcore drugs that do pose a significant danger to individuals and society, it exacerbates the 'gateway' effect. I can't speak for other people but I know for me at least, I'd been smoking weed for a while and I figured, this is harmless enough, so I guess other drugs are equally harmless.
