I play online poker for many years now and theres basicly two different types of strategy thinking from top players.

The ones who try to exploit their opponent as much as they can.
Punish what they view as weaknesses from their opponents. Play mindgames and try to surprise and out level their opponents in different situations.
It can get really tricky when youre playing very tough players and they can obviously try to do the same to you. So basicly you need to be alot better than your opponent at this exploit game to have a big edge on him (also when you try to exploit someone, you often open a door for counter exploit).
If the opponent really has big easy to exploit weaknesses, then exploiting them hard is the best strategy in my opinion. Its just that if many of the top quake players have those things, which they could easily have, it just means the skill level of the game is not all that high.

So mainly because of this, the last years theres more and more people that try to play a less exploitive game. They focus on not being exploited them selves and making the most sound decisions regarding "game theory". We could call it playing very solid and avoiding mistakes.
Even when you dont try to exploit the opponent, when does something silly he will get punished for it most of the time. So in other words, his weaknesses will often time still hurt him, even without you actively exploiting them, just not as much!
I can see how it would work similar in quake, although the games are fundamentally different.

Its just funny to think all this.
I just watched strenxes interview and he couldnt understand how rapha is doing so good.
I dont mean rapha is not trying to exploit his opponents at all, but probably way less than some other players like cypher or av3k or evil.
Alot of the times people view the guys who are big in exploiting their opponents clearly the best. Their game looks more impressive for sure to a guy like me. Its just that theres alot of benefits of playing "boring" and its not easy for sure, but I can see how it can look like that.

You said that there are two types of players in the quake: the "explorer", one that is bold, hunting for their opponents weaknesses or force them to make mistakes. And the other player, so I understood, is a "defensive", player booked that demand little mistakes and attacking more by opportunism when your opponents make mistakes.

Players explorers abuse their blazing skills to overcome his opponents, expose themselves by attacking more and so their style d game is beautiful and exciting, but really need to be much higher skillfully than your opponents. Already the defensive play more calculative and safe, but his playing style is more boring for the spectators.

So you think you're having a dominating defensive players in the quake, as well as in other sports such as MMA, boxing and football? Because of this style, Rapha was successful. But Evil is only one guy who ventures too when he sees an opportunity to frag their opponents, so sometimes he is fragged recklessly. But generally Evil is usually a bit more defensive than aggressive, imo. Am I wrong, dude?

It's good to have emotions but at the same time, it's pretty sad if they take the better of you in the negative way. People should learn to behave at least to the point where they would expect (and appriciate) others behaving the same way towards themselves.
