Mate, how come that you lose to 1300 Elo? Looks like you make some silly mistakes which could be fixed easily. I manage to beat 1300 Elo though I never played this game a lot; I've got about 10 days of ingame time on the lifespan of 1.5 years. I don't have even 1/10th of your combat skills. So maybe you just rush to the enemy or dont control the items at all.

I'd like to play with you to see and tell you your mistakes, but I'm afraid I really have no time to play games now. Besides that, you must have 1000 more experienced duel opponents who can show you your missteps better than me.

Anyway, I never played duel a lot just like you. I just played CA and than I realised that duel can also be fun to play. So I immediately became a 1400-1500 duel player just using my CA experience, trying to ponder on opponent's behavior and timing items. Mind that I use laptop which tends to lag a lot. Once I used my friends' gear and managed to play three steps ahead of my previous perfomance. So in fact being a 1600-1700 duel player is not so hard at all.

playing duel is like.... you get stomped for first 100-200 games... then you get decent enough to play against lowest tier... then you have to play another 1000-2000 games to get a bit better...

Hey, I'd rather advice you to focus all the energy and determination you claim to have on something worth it. Quake is a nice game but it's just a game and nobody, frankly speaking, gives a shit about it. You can't learn money or become history by playing quake (well, you can, but the possibility is tiny).

so wrong. When I play 2on2 on this map i get a different position than if i were playing it in 1v1.
Not to mention those people who like to play +back mode inside the 'tunnel'. For exemple, when i played vs fire_bot, he tried to play around the tunnel, especially with rail and defensive rockets. But still, i won.
And i'm not even mentioning those who like to change positions at start when they feel like they are losing. For exemple, some weeks ago, i played against one of the best french CA player, aka lap1n (back in the day in ra3 he had probably the best LG in france, even better than strenx's), at first we started playing at standard positions, but when he started losing most of the rounds (with score like 11-5 for me, max 20 rounds), he decided to change his position at start, and basically we ended up at the other portion of the map. He even tried to +back with defensive lg in the 'tunnel', quite similar playstyle than fire_bot. But still, i won.

Actually, there ARE geometric irregularities at thunderstruck. When someone falls down or decides to play a more defensive game, you end up playing a very different game than if you were playing LG only on flat surfaces. Not to mention hellsgateredux, which is a map with lots of irregularities, and i play this map quite a lot too, and i actually like it.

If you want a map with 0 irregularities, go play EyeToEye, this is what i call a real flat map, unlike thunderstruck or hellsgate. But still, i like eyetoeye too, it's a pretty good map actually. And eyetoeye IS quake.

If there were a tournament with prize money, i would practice even more than i do atm. atm i play like let's say 2-3 hours a day, everyday, and i'm playing since 2004 (not only quake tho, starcraft and warcraft aswell), so let's say that i practiced enough to be more than decent at it. Actually i have A LOT of time spent playing thunderstruck. So even if there were a tournament, with more people practicing to be the best, i would still be part of the best thunderstruck players ever. So yes, i would still be in top8. More people doesn't mean more skilled people.

I'm already in a 4v4 clan. HWG (HeatWaveGaming). With people like yrx, gohan, rmx, szr, who are basically part of the best CA players in EU.
You don't need balls to join #tdmpickup. Actually i know a lot of people who are only decent (at best) at tdm but still they are playing pickups and enjoying it. What i mean is that #tdmpickup isn't elitist by any mean.

An eventual 1v1ca cup won't feature just one map because that's not how tournaments work. Actually it would be weird having thunderstruck in the map pool, as even lolca people consider it to be the spacectf ca map.

i played like 25-30 games on bloodrun, which is very few ammount of time played.
1300 elo players beat me as well as i beat them. I don't ALWAYS lose vs them, so let's say it's 50/50, so yeah, i'm a 1300elo duel player. Means that i'm not really good at duel i have to admit.

But i'm still the best at thunderstruck.

Nearly 6000 hours (roughly 8 months) of gameplay during the 8 years should mean that at least you have the combat skills (if not else) to stomp 1300 elo players.

I started with Quake Live with no Q1, Q2, Q3 or similar experience. I play only CA, but at some point I wanted to try duel because I enjoy watching tournament streams of duel. I played about 100-200 games total (in duel) and reached 1600 elo. However I quickly stopped playing duel again, because I simply cant be arsed to put much effort into. And simply put, I just enjoy playing CA more than duel.

in the sparse time i can invest playing quake i'd like to improve my duel skills because ca really bores me at the moment. i get spanked a lot by 1300+ elo players. my elo is around 1300-1400, over the last two weeks it dropped from 1500. maybe we can improve together.

here is the thing. you need to play 5 duels a day for the next 2 months. Thats about 300 duels. And stick to 1-2 maps. Set yourself VERY easy goals. E.g. strategy

only attack if you got ALL three major weapons and a stack of at least 100-100



these rules are very basic and do not apply to all situations, but in over 80pct they should be good rules. and they are easy to accomplish. Then after those 300 games, these three rules should be known by heart. Add new rules and keep it VERY simple. I mean VEEEEEEERY simple.
Not like, if a does c, i do x, but if he does b, then i do z, and if he does a, i do v. Thats not good, especially not in the beginning, when you are overwhelmed by all the stuff you should think of.


EDIT: and if you have problems keeping timings just say them over and over again LOUD. Like ... MEGA 25 MEGA 25 MEGA 25 MEGA 25 MEGA 25 MEGA 25 MEGA 25 MEGA 25

Duel is objectively the hardest gamemode. Obviously you are not going to win shit if you only play CA.

you always have good players cross between modes, and have the ability to, if they invest enough time, master a certain mode. be it top duelers, tdmers, ctfers. So this complete line of comparison is mute.
You listed people that don't actively play duels in all honesty.

Spartie and Avek played a lot of TDM and all the games I saw on LevelUpTV they were carrying their teams. They were fed items and they did the heavy damage. Much like Zyrinx.
With k1llsen, it's the same. Never seen him play TDM before Adroits, but he really did rock, and carried a rather weak German team.

Meanwhile, some of those players I listed played a fair amount of duels. Fearzzz over 400, Latrommi over 500, tony more than 900.

Even if you don't consider Avek and Spartie top players in TDM, they are still pretty good. Fearzzz and Latrommi both has around 1900 elo in duel. They are nowhere near top.

I love TDM. I am a TDM player as well. But I just think duel is harder as a gametype.

spartie: 46,4 frags, 6,7 net, 8101 dmg

Do you see a big difference? I only see a big difference in net, and that is because of krysa's superb dm20 vs. le. If you discard that one map, then in the remaining 6 maps Spartie was actually better overall.

Trust me they aren't that much of a big deal ... players like deus, krysa, zyrinx can really break a tdm game with how good they play.

Anyways if you look at pavels example you'll find that there is not that much to bridge between TDM and duel. So when we are talking about these guys you can safely say that if they would put their mind into it they all could be top notch duelers, CTFers, TDMers. It boils down to what they prefer and how much time they have to invest into improving their game.

by playing 500 duels latrommi still has something like 2500 to catch up to av3k on the other hand av3k would catch up with latrommi by playing 700 more tdms. Number here mean nothing since they both have really good aim and know this game inside out meaning if they like to they could own in any mode.

You statement about fearz, latrommi, kinko not being good in duel stands, and by the same principle the statement about duel players being bad in tdm stands, there are exceptions which can cover both modes.
So as far as I'm concerned you should be playing more to really notice the subtle differences between players like av3k/spart1e/cypher/killsen/rapha and players like purri/pavel/krysa/ikkeds/prodx/kinko/noctis

There's plenty of reasons why I believe he's wrong and one is the thing that you need a good team to win, as an individual you can be a noob if your team carries you. You can't win games in duel if you suck, in tdm you can.

they aren't talking about the end result (win or loss), they are talking about how hard the gametype is to master for the individual. currently, duel has a larger playerbase and is more competitive (statistically "harder" for an individual to reach the top tier), but tdm is harder to master as a gametype

Can there be any other measurement of your skill than winning and losing? I'd like to go into theoretical analysis thinking how much you need to put into it to become perfect but that's just dumb imo. Obviously a team of 4 to function perfectly needs more than just yourself to function perfectly, but then again which is harder to master perfectly, tdm or duel, cba going to theoretical analysis of that either because that doesn't really make sense to me (nobody's perfect anyway, let's just take the skill-level of 2010/2011 from both duel and tdm and compare those =p

Well, I think you're both right and wrong. Idealized speaking I think TDM is the more difficult/complexer game mode. Atleast you can make a good case for it, given the amount of information that is potentially to be processed and could be used. On the other hand it is questionable whether humans are really fit to do that, meaning utilize TDM properly or whether they just kind of get along, discariding a lot of that information and molding their behavior into some kind of role. And that's, I guess, where your argument hits, coming from a kind of practical/economic perspective. I guess it is much more costly to do that in duel, than in TDM.

Anway, it's a slightly pointless question anyway.

About accuracy: You cant compare the accuracy of you with evil or cypher, they play against players with much better dodging. They would hit 40%+ vs 1300 elo players.

i hit 45%+ LG vs 1300elo players at 1v1 CA on thunderstruck :D

but in duel it's different, because you have to learn the positioning first, to get a good lg lock. And i don't have it, i mean, i just rush randomly with lg, whatever my position, that's why i fail at it :)

but once you learn the position right, and once you know where and when to set up a trap, hitting 40% LG on 1300elo players isn't that hard, even me could do that. But like i said, considering the fact that i'm pretty noob at duel, i don't set traps properly, and my position is almost always bad/bad weapon choice.

i presume that you learn that only after like 150+ duels on 1 specific map, and i have only maybe 25-30 games on let's say bloodrun.

You've mistaken LG for the end-all of winning, but it's merely one weapon in your arsenal. They all piece together like an intricate puzzle. In theory accurate rockets will defeat accurate lightning always. If your idea of winning is randomly rushing people with it then you're doing it wrong. You're doing a disservice to the weapon you supposedly care so much about.

to be fair, this comes from month of ingame time at thunderstuck CA where it's a reasonable usage of LG.

from what i have witnessed with his duelling is, that he just lacks the experience on the maps which have to be played one situation after the other, were most situations are only valid for that very map.

I posted this in another thread, but it's pretty relevant here:

"Bear in mind, that other people that hover around 1200 elo still may be hugely more experienced than you are... this is assuming we're talking entirely about duel.
If you're just starting out in duel, and are serious about playing everyone you need to learn, you'll wind up dropping to around 900 or so, then slowly working your way back up. So if someone has, say, 1290 elo. They could have already been through that and now be on the upswing.
At lower levels, the QL skillmatching will be more accurate than elo. It's only when you start to get around 1400 elo, or hit the lower end of tier4 that elo starts to become more accurate for picking partners.

The best advice I can give for people starting out in duel, and I give it again and again and again. Is to find someone better than you, but not so much better than you that they don't have to try, and play them a bunch of times. Try and take note of patterns, ways you die, things they repeatedly do... don't try and think about things you're doing right. Once you've isolated a few of their tactics. ( asking also helps I guess ), find someone at your level to test them on. You won't learn much unless you have the chance to test tactics in a low stress environment and see if/how/why they succeed.
Oh and, you gotta have a concept of all the fundamentals too. Timing/Positioning/Aim.
Spend as much time working exclusively on your combat skills as you can, before taking duelling seriously. You'll find it a lot more fruitful, and less frustrating."

As for specific tips about duelling...
I thought that timing items would be forever beyond me, I just thought that my brain couldn't do that kind of thing... How I started out timing was just timing one item... then once that was comfortable for me, I started keeping track of whether RA came up before or after mega. ( Helps also keeping your thinking in terms of positions being more important than timing. )... Then once that was easy to do, I just started timing RA+Mega then thinking of sequences. It is just practice! As hard as it might seem right now, you're just creating new neural pathways! In time and with practice it'll be almost subconscious.

The unfortunate thing for you Heartless is that the community here is just waiting for you to give up or fail. Keep on ignoring them, keep your chin up and just put in the hours practicing!
