Out of interest when you interview Quake players and you go in deep, like no other interviewer ever does, do you research the history of the game beforehand or is it all done from memory?

I do the Quake interviews from memory, I don't usually have time to do research for them, being as my work is in other games. The fact I've watched all the major tournaments allows me to remember quite a lot though.

Thorin is the only person I've seen who can actually be termed an e-sport 'journalist'. No one else brings this area of reporting the to critical, dare I say academic level he does. I can only compare him to 2GD, who was also excellent, but only in commentary and probably only in Quake. I like the iceberg theory. Congrats on your achievements and good luck for the future.

Seconded. In the English speaking arena, he's the only one I know who doesn't come across as a juvenile trying to have some fun while spouting lame jokes (anybody remembers how Slasher asked cooller if he "lost his mojo (giggle giggle)"? arrrgghh).

His sober and analytic style is testament to a genuinely professional approach. E-sports for the grown-ups, so to speak. Grateful he's around.

Edit: although, thinking about it, carmac was pretty good either when he was around. Did a lot for the game.

carmac had many facetts over the years. clown videos for SK and hard criticsm that was needed to that time.

Just remember strenx's legendary couch time with cooller. "Choosing situations when to be aggressive". That was under carmac's moderation.

He's done such a lot for the game, really. Organized major LANs. Walked around on site with camera, explaining stuff. Interviewed players in a reasonable manner. And, as you said, he did not shy away from expressing a strong opinion where applicable. All that's not forgotten, for sure.

i never did an interview nor live interview. it is a skill for sure which grows with experience and own concept. the czm interview not long ago just blow me away. thorin did know so many details about past games. was unbelievable.

about video interviews. i think the internet has the rule of keep it short. i watch long things, but im not sure most ppl do. on the other side, your interview style goes deep so i understand you need more time. your the master!

Thorin, sick! These people probably don't realize that you are active in 1.6, cs:go scene as well, if they are amazed how you do stuff in ql so how about doing even more stuff in cs:go?! Big respect.

A few suggestions for Thorin:

I've said something like this before elsewhere but figure it's more likely to be seen here. I'm not a fan, but given that you conduct a lot of interviews that I want to watch, it's in my interest to offer some constructive criticism.

1. Most importantly, when you conduct interviews you give way too much detail in the questions. Often there's nothing more for the interviewee to say than "um, yeah".

2. You also tend to feed people a particular point of view or a simple dichotomy. They might agree with you in the moment, but because they clearly haven't given it much thought we don't know what they really believe. Remember that it's much easier to just agree with something that sounds superficially plausible if you're in a pressure situation (which interviews are). Rather try to keep things more open-ended.

3. Be careful about ending every sentence with a rising intonation, as if you're asking a question - it can really annoy people who are not Australian (no offense to Australians).

4. Your biases are obvious, but from what I've seen you mostly try to present yourself as neutral. I don't mind a biased commentator as long as they're honest about it.
