Rapha makes his own luck. He practices luck for hours each day to ensure he can be consistently lucky. Over the years he has honed his luck so that he seems just naturally lucky, but it's not luck that he's lucky, it's all that luck practice he does to be lucky when luck really matters.

you guys have to realize that raphas aim still isn't the best around, there are plenty of better aimers than him out there(inb4 the meaningless CA victory).
rapha wins by map control/out stacking his opponents and forcing people into bad situations.
rapha isn't losing until someone can match his mind games.
evil is the closest to him and will be raphas successsor if he keeps playing(evil getting a better mouse will help evil's chances as well)

Being good at quake doesn't make you smart...
It means you're good at quake, that's it.

What the fuck do you talk about? Smart =/= skilled. He's damn smart, just listen to his ESL dm6 gameplay analysis vs cooller. I bet 90% of the people couldn't even express their thoughts as he can.
Being smart and able to understand how things work, concepts if you will, finding the smallest nuances of skill/routine/game etc. is what differs such people. I bet if he was into math and spend the time he spend on Quake on studying it, he'd be if not one of the best, but at the top (for his age). I know that assumption is totally made up, but well.

Seriously? Fat was smart enough to start his own brand while retiring from gaming. Thresh co-founded xfire and sold it for over 100mill. Went on to create raptr and sold that for 40+ mill too. Lakerman I'm not too sure....

He's dedicated and has been taught by some of the best. Harbouring some obvious natural talent and making the most of the opportunity he has it's not hard to see where his "luck" comes from. If you analyze his playstyle, he's just super super solid in all areas, aim, movement, decision making.

Guys. Rapha always gets lucky. Other players don't. I think it's the power of prayers. Rapha is the proof that God exist. Evil only won last DH because Satan liked his nick so he gave him superhuman fighting abilities. It almost worked on Qcon too, but God was more powerful this time.

If you carry out the same experiment a large number of times, you will get a good approximation of the likelihood of him being more skilled than his opponent and the error gets smaller and smaller with increasing number of experiments. So even if a particular situation looks like luck, for rapha, it quite probably isn't.

Cypher is the king when it comes to escaping situations with less than 15hp. Nevertheless rapha seems to do similar things in the most extreme and intense scenarios.

nope, abusing netcode is not luck it's a "skill".... which I disagree on as being as skill. But in quake it's (nowadays) a skill to know how to play on crap connection.... I warned people before it got this far though...

First of all, that rocket on dm13 was everything but lucky.
Prior to that rocket rapha missed another important one, and he was shooting to a damn door, there wasn't much more where he should have shooted at!
And guess who was standing on the door? Evil, and why? Because he was trying to lg the most damage possible to win the mega fight, what an unusual move...
One does not simply stand on a door expecting not to be rocketed, expecially considering that Rapha had already fired 2 or 3 other rockets.
And rockets has that amusing ability of bouncing opponents off since... let me think... must be around 1997 or so.
Not exactly surprising.
So i wonder where peoples sees luck in that shot.
More an Evil fail, since those weren't even particularly bright shots, and they could have been dodged, surely that last one.
And prior to that fight, i don't exactly remember the time, Evil managed to escape a fight with just 5 hp left, one single more lg cell connected and he would have died earlier.
Now, this is luck.
Finally, Rapha isn't that lucky or even that strong, at all.
He just can adapt and correct his own mistakes, that did repeatedly even in that tournament, among the other ones; but his gameplay is definitely not perfect or flawless.

It's just a part of being good at something. Good players, quite literally, make their own luck by picking engagements with favourable odds. It's a very instinctive thing and you HAVE to be good at something to be able to formulate a tactical plan and execute it based on the limited amount of information available to you - if you think about it, there are so many factors involved in every situation, that a certain amount of luck factoring in is unavoidable. However, if you really know your shit, you will know how that factor could affect the outcome of the situation and base your decisions off of that.

When people are saying that Rapha is lucky, what they are really doing is complimenting his deep understanding of how Quake works.

When I was 13 I came home at 4:00 am after spending the night in a bar hugging the toilet for several hours. that was luck, rapha`s decisions are so rational that they just pay off often. About the aim, well sometimes the border between luckshot and genious is very thin.

To round things up, k1llsen-rapha 2010 intel extreme masters at cebit. k1llsen earned it and rightfully defeated rapha but on ztn rapha had terrible luck with spawns.

Any body who disputes that Rapha isint arguably the best quake live player we have seen are simply deluded. There is no other player who can compete at such a high level with pretty average accuracies, so many players are so reliant on aim that when they play Rapha their tiny brains simply cannot comprehend his style. If we are talking about the player who has the best understanding and execution of quake then is has to be Rapha. If you drop say tox's acc to what Rapha's is would he even be able to compete at 2400+?, if Rapha's aim was that of his peers he would be undeniably the best quake live player we have seen. Also he is clearly an intelligent man, he won't be registering for Mensa anytime soon but he is certainly not far from the brightest bulb in the box.

Arena shooters, especially Quake, are supposed to be able to be played with numerous different styles and matches can be won by people with different strengths. That has always been a big part of why Quake is an interesting game.

We need to see more duelers adapt Raphas mentality in terms of really playing the opponent instead of the duel. We saw it in a couple duels and Rapha even said it was his most intense lost world game he has ever played because of this. I think this duel series with Rapha will catapult evils game. I really wish the format would have allowed for more games between the different countries because Style diversity really strengthens everyone. Kind of a shame this con felt dull because of it

i think lg nerf really benefits rapha's game. His previous big losses were to tox, who was hitting unbelievable lg in 2014, and to cypher 2013. Rapha said there was nothing he could do because of cyphers lg.
My guess is that with 7lg, it was too easy for rapha to fuck up. It was a very punishing weapon, and even close range if you missed the first rocket that could be it.

I think evil didn't set enough traps for rapha.
Cypher does good against rapha because he sets traps in weird places.
Cyphers traps don't work so well against evil because of evils combat skills, cypher doesn't take into account items in his traps.
Rapha's traps work against evil because rapha's takes into account items. So he always has an item to fall back on after/during the fight

I thought lg damage was 7 at qcon 2014. I dont get ur point because the lg 6 update post is dated after qcon 2014. Nor can i find any references to the lg damage being 6 before august 2014. So if the nerf was in august it must have come after qcon? And therefore the lg damage was 7?

Only in 1on 1 lg fight. Vs other weaps it's worse as dps is lower compared to the same dps of rockets/rail. It sounds like a small diff from 7 to 6, but it isn't. I was hitting 40+ lg(close range 50+) constantly before the update and after it was owned by rockets like total noob forcing me to up my fov and tune my setup for better rockets to compensate and not be owned that bad. Yes, I have poor rockets so I was nerfed so to be said. :)
This goes for everyone who was around 40% dmg/use via lg and only 20-25 with rl.

Well yes, that applies to you. But judging by what u said, u used LG in situations where good weapon-selection would suggest another weapon. Im talking about these ppl that dont just rely on LG to win every fight. Evil has godlike rockets and uses them plenty, and even tox with his "good" rockets doesnt use LG when its not favourable

Yes, true, but evil used the lg way more when it wasn't nerfed and with good success too. That goes to most of the players. After the balance switch most of the players started to use the rl way more and the good rl aimers have better odds to win over the good hitscan aimers than before the nerf.

I think it's kind of funny people still say Rapha has bad aim relative to anyone.

I like watching rapha. He's a solid player in every way but he's style goes way way deep. You could watch the games he played against evil and analyze them for a long time, and he's doing all that thinking in real time.

I think rapha could have handled an even stronger evil. The games were close but Rapha was always stronger looking IMO.

People talk about his relatively bad aim but pffft. In duel aiming speed is more important than accuracy. No one ever even seems to consider aim speed as a factor. Probably because there's no easy way to measure it as a percentage.

As well like most players when you make a nice shot they are like that was bullshit how did you manage that? But they never even try to hit the difficult shots (it would ruin their accuracy percentages) so they just sit there zoomed in till you walk into their crosshairs. Then still miss. Assholes.
