If I had fun,played a good game and have respect for my opponent I usually say GG. If not what's the point. Last time I checked a video game is not a sport anyway so what has sportsmanship to do with it.

I am just generally repulsed by such conventions that require you to do and say certain things without any logical basis. I wouldn't want quake to become sterile and stuck up like starcraft. Where if you say a thing during a game or don't say GG people will make walls of posts on teamliquid saying how bad mannered you are and how you are not worthy of playing the fine ESPORT(tm)(c) that starcraft is. It sickens me.

Selfrighteously I must admit I neglect saying gl/hf and gg to a person who never does it with me either. My excuse is I treat idiots like idiots.

Also, not turning up for a scheduled cup, saying you have computer problems, then playing on your fake account while the cup is going on - for at least 2 hours no less - and then denying it the day after, while also acting like a complete douche in the very game you delayed makes you look like a complete fag.

sportsmanship is far more than those plain flowers of speech. sportsmanship means to play like a true sportsman. I had a nice talk about that with toni and I think I do him justice by quoting his wise words.

It`s not an exact quote it`s been too long but the essence is spot on!

I`ve talked to some other nobos like me who have played cypher in a tournament. He doesn`t rape you just because he can, he let`s you do your thing and it feels very nice to play him (absurdly at some point you feel like you have a chance) and I respect him very much for that.

On the other hand I played people in tournaments who absolutely showed no respect to my game (rushing my zone with a significantly lower stack even though I`m in control) and simply analfisted me to show who`s boss

Also when I play a noob I never insult or rape, I try to give feedback at the end of the game. Sure I punish mistakes but I don`t try to humiliate. respect their game bitches!

This is an attitude worth to play for, I think at least.

ps: that`s why I absolutely dislike strenx, flaming people in order to annoy them, always seeking fault in equipment or others or refusing to shake hands (with stermy e.g.) is the douchebag attitude that makes it hard for beginners to stay in the game.

Sportsmanship in Quake is saying GLHF, before a game. If you are a obviously a better player letting up after making the game completely out of reach for your opponent. When getting the kill not gaunting your opponents dead body. Not constantly using a bind when you frag your opponent. Always saying GG after the match is finished.

The sportsmanship works both ways though. An opponent who is loosing badly has two choices keep playing unless being treated like shit by the obviously better player in order to try and learn something more from the match against a much better skilled player or to gracefully forfeit the match and say GG. If you are being abused ingame/verbally, remember in order to be a good sport just don't bother playing that player anymore. There is a lot of really good players out there that have great sportsmanship but be prepared to loose a ton against them before you start to gain enough knowledge to win a few.

I myself play only players who are higher skilled then myself mostly due to the fact that there is no one in my tier that I can beat due to my skill rating being inflated from my years of playing the game. Also the fact that I know my learning curve is actually a lot faster due to the mistakes I make being so blatantly obvious against a much better player who makes a ton less mistakes.

Esportsmanship is completely different.

I think what mouse says about raping or not is not so relevant here, it's about your state of mind and how all players respond to situations in game. Diddy K wrote about this in his champions mindset column.

Cypher doesnt need to be thinking 'rape' when he rapes you, he's probably chilling out trying some funny rockets or whatever. Meanwhile, you might feel you are getting it badly and that your opponent is a mean sadist. Now you have the wrong attitude yourself. Even if your opponent wants to crush you thats perfectly reasonable because the object of the game is to win. If he wants to give you some room, thats cool but it can't be expected.

I think rapha has said a great deal on the subject as well. Thinking 'aww that lucky punk' is fine, as long as you can laugh about it. If you start reciting these raging mantras in all seriousness you're wasting a lot of energy.
