That beeing said, quake is quake and we do what we do.
Everything is cool imo, we have shitloads of tournaments and entertaining players to watch. If we had 1 million players, the game wouldn't be any better.

That's a fair point. Was thinking about it the other day (yep I thought about quake).

In the lolofficial forums people think QL's shortcomings are because of the apparent lack of players, but would the game improve at all if it had twice more? Also they fail to realize the game is much more popular than they think, because of the shitty server browser and that ESR is occult knowledge for them.

Well, having more players would really improve QL for everyone. The skillmatching would be better and it would be easier to play the less popular game types. It would also mean more content for players if we assume id's income increases.

Matchmaking wouldn't be better without doing extensive modifications to the system, such as adding more tiers. In QL's case having more players isn't an instant improvement on that matter, as we all saw when the game was more popular than it is right now (at the beginning) and when there are free premium weekends

Would it be? With the current match pairing system and server browser I'd say having twice more players does not equal twice more populated freezetag servers, because the servers will still be empty though there's people waiting for at least one to have players in them. If anything there would be vastly more people in lolca, a bit more in ffa and very few more in duel, tdm and ctf, most of which will be complete noobs (those are the three mods that matter to us and won't be improved at all).
Also, the server browser won't display twice more populated servers even if there's twice more people playing, because of the way the default settings work.
What would be more significant improvements on this regard are changing the business model (from the outside it looks like an annoying pay to play flash game) and stealing a page from CoD.

The third point is speculation. Syncerror could clarify on if adding content there was ever a lack of funds (first question) and if more money would equal more classic and new maps and content in general (second), though here is what we know:
- In the past and currently the biggest issue with classic maps was contacting the map maker, scancode for example, and about new maps there's not many people doing quality stuff for Q3 (most of the good ones are already in QL) or exclusively for QL. Talent left this game a long time ago so right now there's what, 5 good mappers?.
- As for mods, we know there are technical and legal reasons why ra3 and defrag aren't in QL, so money won't change that.
- As for content in general, this game has been in development for at least 6 years (most probably 7), plenty of time and resources to get things done and to improve/revamp others, that never happened. More money on the project could only improve QL if id focuses on this game instead of doom4, meaning that there's new workers involved in it instead of the ones that had 6 years of opportunities, and even that is speculating since id has been a quite mediocre studio since 1999 and right now is so bad Zenimax made it start doom4 from scratch due that their sole project was an awful game.

Out of the mentioned three points, I'd say only matchmaking is truly a major flaw -which isn't automatically fixed with more players-, then a big though not a crucial one is on the second paragraph, and I truly think this game has more than enough content, not being a flaw at all but just a missed opportunity, again due to id software instead of a lack of players or lack of funding. Sadly times and opportunities go by.

Finally, most of QL's major flaws would still be there without any improvement, including game design and conceptual issues, even if it had 5 times more players. The core issues will always be there unless there's a structure rework. Actually this very site would be the same, just with 5 times more cooloutacs and supermarios.
