well in germany internet outside of bigger citys is mostly a joke. we are #22 worldwide when it comes to downloadspeeds and thats mainly due to fibre in some few citys. our biggest isp tried to impose a "flatrate" on everyone that would slow down after some GB last year, at the same time advertising for its own cloud solutions and how its own services wont be counted for that low-down/upload-barrier (ohai fucked up company).
at the same time we have stupid things like 20:1 download to upload ratio, so even with a more costy contract you still wont be able to stream stuff whatsoever because of upspeeds.
oh and a government that told for the 3rd time right before election everybody that NOW they would invest into grid expansion.. to then forget about it again for 4 years.

They are different questions... the first is fairly smart and explained in my general post on netcode (but I have np re-explaining that) the 2nd is well..... imo deserving of my post.

The overall gameplay will be better because you reduce the unlagged part of QL.

(up to aproximately ping 70 the following holds):
You aim at the model where you see it on your screen. Where you see it on your screen is (on average) half of your ping + 25ms behind where he is on the server.
On registerring the hit the server looks back at where the opponent should've been on your screen.
So effectively you are aiming behind where the server thinks that the nmy model is at.
The current implementation of timenudge reduces the 25ms -> 5ms (on tn-20) autotimenudge should also reduce the "half of your ping" but the regular timenudge doesn't affect that.

This leads to you aiming at a place which is closer to where the server thinks you are -> better gameplay.
Ideally you want a game where the time at which you fire = time at which it will register and location where you fire at = location where the hit is at.
But due to lag both can differ quite significantly. Timenudge just reduces the difference by x ms (-20 = 20ms closer to "reality").

So this would lead to less of those "shots around corners" that people complain about.


Now for QL specifically the effect of the "looking back" part of the server is comepletely messed up for the use of LG. And that's just because it fires rapidly and has a knockback. And that's the only reason why +forward LG works like a magnet for wins online.

There is another more subtle difference which is more complex to explain which is due to your own view being "ahaid of the server" (aka you move instantaneous when you hit a button but the server obviously lags behind). However the server is the dominant force when you are being knocked back. Aka it can "overwrite" your possition when the speeds suddenly don't match anymore.
This is very clear if you do a rocketjump on a high ping. (Do the rj as if you're on lan -> it'll work -> but you get this badass teleport on your screen where half of the start of the jump is skipped instantly.

This is why +back with LG = insta loss online. And it also adds to the effect of +forward LG.

What you think and what is real are 2 very different things.

You base your "feeling" on the % you hit, which is higher when you're on tn 0 yet aiming as if it's lan. Other people base their "feeling" on the sound which is better on tn-20.

I always played for fun. The only thing I'm "bitter" about is that nowadays QL is not fun anymore because everyone does this braindead +forward lg while downloading porn. I like the "mindgames" of QL, trapping the opponent in situations he doesn't expect. Suprising him with strange moves and tempting him to go for bad moves.

Sure I dislike it that I didn't get invited to all tournaments while I felt like I could've done a good job there and have fun while doing so... but that's "sports", I don't stop playing tennis because I'm not Federer either.

Regardless of the time nudge value players don't warp more or less on my client... just use cl_autotimenudge 1, play, and be happy.

timenudge makes enemy model buffer earlier to it's true location. The problem is it makes the model jitter. And you guys keep asking 1000x what's the best timenudge. The best timenudge is what you can handle. No calculation can find that for you.

I wouldn't be too sure it changes pvs if the enemy is moving into yours. Did you ever experience the enemy teleporting around a corner?

I don't play for wins, I play for fun. I liked the game... I liked it a lot. And that I got to several semifinals / finals. Is just because I like competing in the game.
If I change my style to something which, in my eyes, is not quake... then it's not fun to compete.

I mean I played a few games as "an lg +forward monster on crap ping" and I won all of them with huge scores (even vs fairly good player) but I didn't enjoy any of those games.

Also I feel like if I would've changed my game that I would not be as good as I would be on lan. (talking about 2009 - 2011 where imo I was around top8 / top16 in the world (lan)... but never got invited to any lan because online I was top64... although in 2009 I probably was top16 online as well but well the q3 players all got invited over me for unclear reasons)

Just skipped through some of my screens of 2009... I was playing toe to toe (aka winning and losing matches) vs spartie, fazz, dem0n, czm, zamuz, garpy etc.
I only lost fairly consistent to fox and guard... (and I had only very few games vs some others which I did all lose, like vs bodzo (2 / 2 loss).
Strangely enough theres 1 screenshot of me vs zsx showing that I win a dm6 by 12 - 10. My first loss to zsx is may of 2010.

I don't mean to say that I was better than spartie / fazz / dem0n / czm / zamuz / garpy.... but we were around the same 'class' of player... and I guess that they all are in your top10 of 2009. So top16 for me would not be extremely far off.

Also funny is that I have like 25 screens of me beating rehepapp and just 5 where he beats me most of which by less than 3 frags.

What weird means is that you don't necessarily hit more with a higher ping but the +forward style with lg gets stronger at a certain ping range which is kinda true. You don't hit more but opponents hit less even tho the situation should let them hit more. Just listen to the latest fraze interview where he points out that online play differs from lan and how ping influences lg play.
I also hit better with a lower ping (except maybe crazy 50ms rails :P). Even if I didn't you, me and a lot of others will still prefer a lower ping because the gameplay/feeling gets a lot better.

If you wanna know for sure then just start a game halfway around the world and hit a rail on ping 300+ in warmup. These effects are very noticable ;)

exactly. Like when you hit rails, get hitbeep and mind thinks it's wrong, since model got corrected and lagged further ahead than it should have, if you actually hit. But that might be some other thing entirely.

Hitbeep is server side always has been since its inception, its always been there as absolute confirmation of a hit.

The damage reflecting beep option similarly requires the server to notify how much damage was actually done.

To me with LG they have always sounded a bit delayed at start and aren't frequent enough, like if the sound file had no noise at the beginning.

Only reason they are delayed is because theres no cg_predictLocalHitbeep (which imo shouldn't be there but if you want the netcode which QL has then it would be logical to write it).

As for them not being frequent enough.... I've sometimes had that feeling as well.... but when I "aim based on what I see" rather than how I "instictively aim" then I usually get the hitbeeps pretty consistent. So I would be inclined to say that this depends more on your aim-style not being "ql netcode proof" rather than it having to do with sounds dropping.
However.... on this last part I'm not entirely sure, it's just based on my own feeling rather than knowledge about code etc.
