Why not? Saying it is not newbie friendly and old people will rape and blablabla is missed cumshot. Newer players won't even lick older's ballz and people will play good maps.

We're not going to in-force our players to make original maps only, they can create anything they want which is what i love about having a map editor.

You're making a mistake allowing it as a possibility. I won't bother playing if maps from other games find a way into the mainstream pool.

He never said that those maps would make it into the official mappool (official as in the way SCII handles mappools).

He never said they wouldn't, hence the declaration that I won't bother if it happens. It makes no sense to include Quake maps in a new game, anyway. Time to move forward.

That's exactly my thinking, but if you make a game with a level-editor that is accessible to everybody you simply can't force the people who use it into not building certain types of maps in it.

The only thing they can enforce is what maps make it into the official ranked mappool and I am pretty sure they won't include ztn and other "classics" into it. To be honest I don't think ztn or any classic quake map would fit the movement system they want to have in place.

That's the major issue, I believe in the community we're building and that they enjoy fresh maps over remakes for competitive play. Higher ranked players might get a more meaningful vote in our map pools. :)

1. We're using steam features involving friendlists & playing non-random ranked.

We're still banging away at our F2P model, but essentially there are cosmetics people buy and alternative player models based on our story line, of course these cosmetics won't be uber flashy or do game breaking things like larger/smaller heads. lol

We plan to put all the power in the hands of the map makers, but we can't go to extremes TBH we're still trying to figure this out.

We're going with the portal method of training new players. Before playing ranked games players might need to que up for a training game, where they get matched up with another player and both enjoy our intuitive scrub training process. :) we will figure it out

Programmers alone, we're at 3 including myself and a dedicated netcode programmer.

Thanks for reply. By teammodes I mean, which modes do you intend to incorporate (tdm, ctf, anything else) and whether you intend to add any new concepts to them.

By "How customizable will the game be" I meant similar to how quake pretty much allows the game to look and feel how the player wants, such as the player's ability to change picmip, fov, enemymodels... gib colour, weapon XYZ position, breast size, and have custom scripts in the config for volume control, chat binds, different settings per weapon, etc...

TDM and CTF are the backbone, we've got tons of creative new ideas for team game modes but they all need to-be tested, once we get play tests going there will be more information on that.

We've already decided not to have picmip, I suggested some maps might have picmip depending on the map creator. FOV Of course, sadly no stands on opponent models, lots of these need to-be talked about in great detail, but they are all things we add on request in beta.

Balance is another word for uninteresting! Don't fall into the trap of "balanced" gameplay.

Hurry up and explain/show how this "power" is going to work. Every thread on here/video says something along the lines of..

"we have energy, armor, weapon and movement will revolve around this"

You have to address this - it is a key function of your game but we don't know anything about it.

So please, show us how it works. Does it regen, is it a pickup, do you get it when you kill a player? How?

If there is one energy pickup on a map and you can use it as either armor or ammo or to bh, that sounds crap. I am sure thats not how its going to work (maybe?) but we need to know. :)

Make a functional map so we can understand.

Can you give some description of the types of weapons we'll see in PNex?

What is the Shield Gun? Does it absorb damage or deflect? Can you kill someone with it?
What will melee be like?
Will there be a gun similar to the LG for aimwhores to play with?

Since you talk about having a duel mode, how will it be different from quake duel? (other than the obvious energy stuff)

Weapons are a complicated subject, Part 2-3 of episode 1 talk about it in greater detail, including starting weapon information. We have a lightning gun concept that's being textured right now.

If I have 4x time-played with fps games, should I still listen to you and your opinions? How about 20x? Are you going to recoup this deficit in play-testing? Over the course of how many months? It sounds like the game isn't working yet, how long is that going to take? Why don't you feature some of your fine maps instead of trying to incite arguments about game mechanics? Why don't you release the map editor? Good maps are easily 99% of what makes a shooter game anyway. I know you like chatting about games whose differences were very relevant 16 years ago, but have you tried anything more recent? It seems like you have completely neglected ET-like games, or the most relevant part of UT, which was Assault mode, have you even played these? How about HL2DM, or PK? Nexuiz (pre-retail), Xonotic, and Warsow are also sharing original ideas, and also for free (mostly). How are you going to differentiate PNex from these games, when they were made by larger teams with more combined experience, and also released completely for free?

Why is the machine gun in Quake bad exactly? You said having people shoot at each other at the start of the match is bad but you never gave reasons. Like these starting weapons don't deal that much damage so you have enough time to stay or fight in the initial engagements.

I don't think it's bad, it punishes players early game for not knowing how the gun is used. I'm looking to solve that early game issue with the combat shotgun, at the same time avoid damaging mid/end game. Again this is something we will learn more about when we reach alpha, it's hard to fully gauge if an idea works until people are doing it. :) thank you

well what is good about mg? tracing some1 with ur aim can be fun, but that's about it. quake mg is among the most useless weapons of fps history. i like the idea of having a starting weap u can do sth with. but maybe that's just me, a guy who doesn t like games just being about controle.

mg can deal some serious damage lol what are you on about, not to mention it's the perfect weapon (and most of the time the only weapon) you can use to finish someone off long range

there's nothing quite as satisfying as being able to get shit done in tdm with just pummel, mg and sg. feel like bear grylls

someone made a FFA-mod without mg and i works perfectly fine (u start with gauntlet). mg-sound sux and the weapon is very irritating for newbs also.

ffa can work with any modification, but I agree that the mg sound could be improved

mg forces u to aim all the time, directly after respawn. its actually better without this. either saw an enemy to get a weapon or pic one up. spawning with sg could work similar.

i disagree on any modification. there is this server where u spawn with 5 weapons. its horrble.

sg is waaaay to powerful to spawn with. it's like the 4th strongest weapon in tdm.

tdm without MG would be pretty stupid. because a lot of time you have to rush certain areas and when the first wave is dead most of the second wave don't have weapons but can finish off opponents with MG because health respawn is 35 seconds and they did enough damage before.

in duel it's different. there we could kick out MG no problem whatsoever. but in TDM it would make map locks even harder to break.

q1 sg starting weapon is the best starting weapon ever imo, don't know if you just forgot about it on purpose but I hope you implement something similar.

With the shield, does it only protect you from the front? like if someone throws grenades behind you or some other explosions go off behind, to the sides or above you will you still take damage?

Well the shield gun isn't intended to protect all directions, grenades that are thrown behind the player will do immense damage.

I think shield gun is a bad idea.
It was very unpopular in ut2 and also dropped in ut3 as far as I know.

it wasn't a loved weapon indeed, but I promise you there is potential in it as a fun weapon, we're willing to put the extra time into making it work. :)

Shield gun in UT and their shield gun are very different based on what I can read from this.

It blocks damage. Sounds about the same as the 2k3 one. With some whacky alt fire with really clunkily worded text, that also blocks damage.. and reflects it.

Also the second video is confusing because they talk about energy (the stuff that powers player suits, is used as ammo? also used for movement?) but it is difficult to tell if they mean energy specific to the weapon OR some overall energy pool OR something else entirely limited to the weapon itself.

I like these vlog things. The problem is you are not 100% sure what you want to do yet. I want to know what you are planning on implementing, not "we could do all these THOUSANDS of different things!". Not interesting at all. imo work out the framework of weapons is and then tell us about them.

I have most of my faith in 2GD, If his game gets finished the way he wants it to, I think it will be the one that gets most attention and will probably be the best arena FPS game. Because he knows what the game needs to be a good esport game, and also knows how important the feel of the game is. But the question is if it gets finished, it sure feels like forever.

Reborn is at the bottom of my list of games I'm expecting. no hate on the guy, I like him for being outspoken and he has that DGAF attitude

but in terms of making a game, he's given me the smallest amount of hope. Cliffy B is making a new game, I give that 100x more weight than 2GD has, even though 2GD loves quake and strafing and all that. Cliffy has people, experience, resources, money, and connections.

It's unfair to compare 2GD to cliffy, but it's fair to compare him to Nex, and Nex is doing a lot. They show progress, they take input, they basically show that there's a group of people who care about making a new, good arena fps game

all I've seen from 2GD is him streaming Diablo and that's it. seriously other than the two times he's done something on stream, he's shown/told very little. I get it, you gotta be secretive, sure.

You mentioned alt-fire on the shield gun.

Will alt-fire be a thing on all/majority/minority of weapons? I felt that some of the weapons in the UT series felt somewhat gimicky with the alt fire. I guess I am curious of what you are going to do with weapons overall because you mentioned that weapons will be the corner stone of the game?

I for once am a little skeptical of alt fire weapons. I prefer weapons that have single fire mode but are designed to have multi-purpose:

Example: Rockets allow you to play defensively by backing up and spamming the space between you and your opponent, yet hitting a strong first rocket and/or bouncing your opponent can turn the RL in a very strong offensive weapon. Also Lightning gun in quake could be usually considered an aggressive weapon for killing your opponent, yet in situations where your opponent needs to drop from above or come up a jump pad to get to you, it becomes a very strong defensive weapon. Single fire mode but the design allows for different uses of the same thing.

I guess my point is that I prefer complexity that arises from simple, smart design over convoluted design with too many options.
