tl:dr but I think the best solution is to use elo 2.0, which would be (Avg. Win Opponent Elo + Avg. Loss Opponent Elo) / 2

and either way the system is highly open to abuse so forget about it

averages are highly effected by outliers (which in this case could be represented by fake accounts)

The biggest modifier of real skill to the elo from qlranks is the map and non-qlranks-ranked games (be it duel or otherwise) imho.

An unbeaten aerowalk only player will have a huge elo but might still lose to a 1950 elo player on that map - why - because the 1900 elo player is possibly losing lots of matches on dm6 or w/e.

This theory proposes that elo is not as truthful as it sold to us.

I put random players in tiers.
The factors I calculate with when meeting a new player on a pub duel server come from quakelive.com and qlranks.com.

First I look at the elo, then at the win rate - if it's low elo and low win rate I know it might be an underrated player, but he's still low-ish.

If it's good elo (1700-1800) I look at the number of duels on qlranks and win rate. Very possibly a fake account with below 400 games, but also possibly a decent teammode player (aimer) or both of those.

If it's decent elo (1800-1950) and a good number of games (>2000 overall) I look at the maps played - possibly a one map wonder and very beatable or a one map wonder and hard to beat on that map.

What that means to me is that after a decent number of duels and on a map that's not an outlier in terms of play-time or skill to either of the players, qlranks elo is very telling of the outcome.




Other stats that are meaningless (don't tell us about the outcome of a future match):
avg. opponent win elo - why - because how does it matter that killsen just plays 1600 elo nabs, he's still raping 2200 elo players, and one loss (be it abort/kick/999) would put him down a lot anyway.
accuracies - people who spam a lot (cooller) and just play differently have advantages somewhere else.
ping - is already integrated in previous game outcomes
