agentsmith thinks everyone is hacking. He is fairly competent aimer. He can't understand how someone can have above a 35 LG. If you trace the hell out of him, it is evidence of more hacking rather than him considering he needs more work or his config is too fast/too slow and holding him back. A 35 LG is pretty average. That's a 'lowish' game acc for most high level players.

Tyryl was banned for "extreme harassment" in the words of SyncError, not cheating. But he's no longer banned, considering steam QL was a clean slate everyone.

As for warping, it's actually a pretty technical subject and anyone who wants to have an opinion on it needs to do some research first. Anyway, I'm not sure how you can play QL and not realize how intuitively 'wrong' so many of the things that happen are.

The issue with warp in QL is quite specific to the game, and it's a red herring to imply such things are inherent to online shooters. It's the netcode/antilag, and the way it interacts with the limitations of the game engine.

First of all, most modern game engines interpolate and extrapolate appropriately on the client and server so that unstable connections don't make people visibly stutter, skip, and teleport across the screen. Reflex, ut4, tf2, new cods, bf4, csgo, etc are all pretty much warp free. You might see some anomalies if people are on extremely awful connections, but it's not even remotely comparable to QL.

While it's possible in theory to implement changes to the old Q3 engine that would resolve the problem (see COD), it was never within the QL team's budget/expertise to re-engineer idtech3 to that extent. I could tolerate the stutter, and accept the game for what it is -- 17 year old technology -- if warp was just a visual anomaly or made some people a bit harder to hit. Unfortunately the problem doesn't stop there. The netcode (i.e. the unlagged backwards reconcilliation part of it) is what makes things really nasty, and this topic has been discussed to death on this forum by people who have spent a lot of time researching and talking about it.

In a nutshell, people can be on unstable connections, and suffer very little downside and plenty of upside due to the way the anti-lag system works. That's because while JohnnyWarper is teleporting around on your screen and you can barely hit him, he's moving relatively smoothly on his screen and shooting you the whole time. Those hits aren't counted immediately, but once all the packets make it to the server and the backwards reconcilliation does its job, suddenly you're fragged.

As for the instakill thing, it sounds like you've decided to assume some definition for the term rather than use critical thinking or inquire to find out what I meant. Instakill is something that happens with unlagged LG mostly. Basically all it means is, XxX_Random_Douche_xXx starts shooting me, but on my end there's no indication he's shooting me until I've already lost half my health or more. This happens all the time with bad warpers, but for whatever reason it also sometimes happens with people who aren't blatantly warping, and some servers are worse than others. I've never been instakilled by LG on Reflex, and people who have played on LANs say reasonable pings on reflex feel like lan.

I didn't say he was banned for cheating. I'm pretty sure I know why. He lost an FFA match and threatened to go to this persons house with a shotgun and blow their brains out. The mental gymnastics to rationalize this behavior are olympic level. It's inexcusable. This game doesn't need that crazy shit. Anyway I've only lost to warping once. 49-49 one frag left the only person near me is warping around. I try to LG him and he just warps away without dying. Shit happens. You either win or you lose whining isn't going to change anything. Pub FFA doesn't mean much. Quake in general doesn't mean much. It is, after all, a game that passes time. To the few who actually made a lot of money off of it (fatal1ty, rapha, etc.) they are few and far between. You should relax a little and stop blaming warping and instakilling for losing. The higher your game skill is the less that shit matters in the end.

The effect of netcode/hitreg related issues depends on play style, personal tolerances, etc. I find it annoying and discouraging. Anyhow, I don't really play the game anymore. I was supportive/optimistic leading up to the steam release but it has been a big let down. It's not fun anymore and fewer people play than ever before. Discussions like these are pretty much just out of intellectual interest.

this is something that does not happen on lan. i hope somebody who has played on lan will confirm this. the lg instakills are a result of backwards reconciliation buffering client states to determine hit registration.

your client state is mismatched with your opponent's. he has actually been lging you for the length of time that is required for his state to reach the server, for the server to produce a game state, for that determined state to reach your client, and for your client to respond, and for that response to reach your opponent.

an example scenario:

lg rate = 20c/s
lg damage = 6d/c
lg dps = 20c6d/sc = 20(6d)/s = 120d/s
your latency = 50ms
opponent latency = 50ms

time for yours & opponent's states to affect one another: 100ms
your biological response latency = 200ms (a practical assumption)

so at the minimum, assuming a slightly better than average biological response latency, you're looking at 300ms of free damage that cannot be responded to. assuming no forward momentum that must be acted on by floor friction so that a dodge pattern can begin, you're going to receive, at the least:

120d(300ms/1000ms) = 36 damage

if you're unlucky enough to have just initiated a jump when your opponent begins firing in his game state, then he is going to have an entire jump worth of +forward free lg damage + the safely assumed free damage from above.

this is a major contributing factor for dealing plasma damage at the lower ya teleporter exit on ztn, as well, though it isn't the only factor.

i am assuming that this is why a guy like weird claims that he doesn't want to play ql online, because it forces him to change his playstyle to adapt to mechanics that emerge from high latency communications being compensated for by backwards reconciliation (which might also be inadequately implemented).

i am also not very confident that the implementation of the 'unlagged' netcode was complete, nor that it was well tested, or that it could even be adequately addressed by the ql development team. as i recall, arqon was contracted to provide the networking updates for quake live, and might not have totally completed his work.

essentially, quake live netcode for high latency internet play (>40ms) is going to have some unpredictable inconsistencies. there are variables other than this that will contribute to the unpredictability, as well.

all that said, there are people who are sensitive to this, and there are not sensitive. there are people who are sensitive to this and aren't bothered by it, and there are people who are sensitive to this and are bothered by it.

i am a person who is bothered by it, and so i choose to not play. i question the sanity of anybody who is bothered by it, especially to the point of antisocial and intentionally offensive outbursts, and continues to play for years.

btw, there is a command to disable clientside interpolation that will help to understand this to some degree empirically. here is an interesting article about the subject that i've just bookmarked:

my guess is that the quake live backwards reconciliation code is not compensating properly for latency differences in players, i guess to reduce server overhead. i assume that this is why the cl_autotimenudge variable was introduced.

Well since "instakill" is not a real term and left to interpretation forgive my misunderstanding. It's safe to assume these players you are accusing of "instakilling" you are hitting 35% LG tops. Meanwhile good LGers on LAN probably hit ~50%. Would you complain if you died in 1-1.5 seconds? I have a feeling you would. It seems the common human response to something is "it's anything but my fault".

There are players whose lg feels that way at 35 acc, just as there are some whose lg feels that way at 45+. As for hitting high acc on lan, from what I've heard it's somewhat harder than under ideal conditions online because there's no delay between when you start shooting on your screen, and their reaction (i.e. starting to dodge or moving to a different position i.e. no unlagged instadeath).

A lot of interesting points. Your analysis of the minimum delay before someone can react to unlagged lg is useful, and I would add to it that, for whatever reason, sometimes the delay/instadmg effect feels much more substantial than it should be given the pings (like 600ms, 70 dmg or more), and that's when I find it intolerably annoying. I don't know why someone merely warping with 20 ms of jitter would result in this effect, but I've observed it with numerous players at different times. That leads me to your other point about the unlagged probably being inadequately implemented -- you're probably right and I have suspected the same thing. I have a hunch that even with the limitations of the Q3 engine, backwards reconciliation could be done better. Things like this are generally about finding the right balance among the trade-offs, and I don't think that was ever done right with this netcode.

client hit beeps are also determined by the server. you've likely already observed that on some servers your lg hit beeps have an unexpectedly long delay, and that sometimes on the same server against different players, the delay varies.

i have been on servers that i ping 50 to, and have had this odd delay in hit beeps, and on some servers with higher pings with less noticeable delay. this can also be demonstrated with no other players on the server by shooting at the wall with impact sparks on to hear the collision feedback of the beam & wall. another interesting experiment is to switch to lg while holding down +attack, then watch to see the delay between your lg beam appearing & your ammo count beginning to drop.

maybe these tests aren't 'valid', so using them to support the conclusion that there are unexpected inconsistencies in ql networking behavior is inappropriate. i don't have ql installed to test whether or not lg ammo counts down immediately on a listen server, or whether impact sparks sound immediately on a listen server.

Yeah, the hitbeep thing is really annoying. Hitbeep for LG can't be relied upon at all due to the points you mentioned. I believe Weird had suggested they should implement 'predictLocalHitBeeps' or something like that.

Impact sparks being client side can be quite misleading. When I used to have impact sparks on, I would often see sg blasts produce full sparks, with the opponent taking no damage. The prediction involved here is really bad.

There's something else really weird that can happen with the networking, which I call 'delay kills'. Occasionally I'll be shooting at someone with LG, and run out of ammo, and then perhaps 500ms later my opponent is fragged. This is with normal pings on both ends. When this has happened, I've been told by more than one friend I 'instakilled' them. It's all related, but I don't think we'll ever know conclusively what's actually going on.
