The beggars in London confused me, considering you could just go on the dole, but still it's not any worse than any other major city I've been to, probably better. On that point, beggars and the homeless have always targeted more wealthy areas, it's not a new thing. Anyway, I think you overestimate just how much of a collapse is required in order to have a true state of chaos, in SA we have 35% unemployment, half the population live in shacks and we currently have rolling blackouts, but life just keeps on moving. No way any sort of "chaos" will be hitting London any time soon.

£600 for a double room in a house share is pretty average in London these days.

I pay £1400 for a 2 bedroom flat, nice kitchen, lounge and dining area and a courtyard. Can't do house shares anymore. For my area this is also pretty average.

But for some perspective, in South Africa I could get a 3 bedroom house with a garden, garage, swimming pool, spacious etc right by the beach for about R10 000 - R12 000, which about £500 - £600pm.

That's insanely good, I was paying £500pm 5 years ago. (Zone 2 Putney)
