You know around 85% of cvars which means you are one of the few that could go through the config and do what you need to do but you still want someone else to do it. Lazy much lol.

try v5.1 but definitely keep backups, I think the last version I tried was v3 or so and it used to fail on things, it would also treat the newest cvars as bogus if it's not up to date.

Go through your config and when you encounter a cvar you don't know, just ctrl+f <cvar> at the console guide page and you immediately see what it does.
That shouldn't take too long.

does it work well ? doesn't it remove too much cvars even those that are still kind of useful ? Is it up to date ?

i see that even the default value for some cvars can be removed. So if i want a "clean" start i have to delete qzconfig repconfig etc from home/baseq3 and then probably even delete every settings from ingame quakelive and finally put my cleaned up cfg in baseq3, load the game again and everything should be fine, right ? :)

h8m3 did that tool some time ago (a bit over a year); I really don't know if he's keeping it updated. But for the most part it should work, only a few cvars were introduced meanwhile, so you should be able to add those afterwards, I guess.

Edit: You can always backup your current config and try it.

We're close to the steam release when there will be a bunch of new cvars I think, and some removed. Since I don't play the game really anymore I'm falling behind on what all has changed but I'll try to keep up.

I didn't look at the src too closely, but I was wondering how it's able to determine what variables are used for scripts.

The only difference I can think of is that such variables would appear in a bind, or would appear in a set that appears in a bind, but there are cases where they'd just be used as console commands. I guess you could just test for cvars appearing in the value a given cvar is set to? Is that what this is doing? It definitely has a scripts in use category. I'm just being lazy, asking instead of using my brain.

The method parameters are the collection of binds and the collection of variables categorized as invalid (those which do not appear in the default cvars from in-game cvarlist)

First, it goes through the binds values, checks if the regex for vstr returns any matches, if it does, add all matches to a queue. (line 30-32)

Then it processes the queue by removing the first element and looking it up in the invalid commands collection. (line 37-38)

If it's found in the invalid commands collection, add its details to the valid scripts collection, (line 39-40)

Remove the found vstr variable names from the invalid list (line 41)

Check if the vstr regex returns any matches on the new valid script's value, if any are found, add the matches to the queue, (line 42-43)

Then repeat this process until the queue is empty. (line 36)

Return both a collection of valid scripts and updated invalid commands collection. (line 47)

It's probably for the better. A lot of players with that old czm junk in their config not being used but have all the appearance of variables that one could just vstr in the console. So the current behavior would be desirable in more circumstances than not.

Just some rare cases where some user created console command script would be lost, but it would probably be for something stupid anyways like a say bind that execs a config to say it.
