There's no way any pro at Quake came, played a Quake with classes, timers, (and loadouts?) and gave them a thumbs up. They might've played some version of Quake Champions, but I bet at the time they didn't have the classes and other dumb shit in it yet.

The beauty of Quake is that it's up to the player to choose and develop their own style based on what he or she thinks their own strengths and weaknesses are. If someone wants to play super defensive one minute, then suddenly go super aggressive the next, they should be able to. As long as THEY have the ability to do that. Adding some convoluted restrictions within the game to a player's ability and calling it a good thing is a fucking joke.

And item timers, hehe. Item timers, in Quake, at a competitive level, lmao. And I thought watching Trump become president of the US was the craziest shit I'd ever see, [id] software once again out to prove me wrong.

As far as I know those who tested it were "good players", not pros. Pros apparently had good reactions when told about the concept of this game, but we don't know what they were told exactly.

But you really shouldn't expect every pro out there to share your opinion. I'm sure the opinions are mixed just like among us.

I think the humorous undercurrents here involve most devs developing and making changes to games based on feedback, while sync and sponge basically inherited QL and made changes based on how they think the game should be played.

I'm pretty sure no pros or good players tested it. I also don't believe they had a working alpha for longer then a few months and I don't believe Tim ever played it. I think they are heavily developing it and still don't have a full idea of how it will look. Tim is just flat out making stuff up and launching probes to see how people respond. You can see that by contradicting things he says and improper uses of terms like "strafing"(the fuck he beams by strafing).

i think he means that when you press A or D you dont turn around on the spot (like in wolfestein 3d), you actually walk to the side while maintaining your body looking in the same direction. Then, if im wrong, and he actually means something else by using the term strafing then you are right, he is making stuff up.

this pretty much works for many sports too... or any other activity/game that you have ever practiced or played. You are just sucking your own dick with that phrase as a quaker.

again, the beauty of quake is defrag, undeniable, the movement is what makes quake unique on top of everything else.


the rest of your points are valid tho... things like the item timers, the wallhack habilities, the aimbots, etc.... these are clearly dumbed down mechanics to target bigger audiences, that's all. No need for awareness like in CS or quake with these mechanics, it ruins a bit the brain play (even if you can always find a way around).

If you're a true Quake fan you'll buy the game anyway and find out if you like it, it's not like we're having a new quake game every week.
I don't need hype to buy it. I'd still prefer buying a not-so-good Quake game rather than the latest call of duty or battlefield.

but many of those hardcore quake pros are now willing to play overwatch class game, they run where supposedly is the new competition ... they are playing for the *competition* .... imho. the chance that these players are able to transition to an elite level in a different game concept is very small ... most likely they get pwned hard by those 16-22 year olds that are around now
